PART ONE: Whole Class:

Students play “Quiz-Quiz Trade”. Teacher has sets of index cards (students can make their own or teacher can print the provided ones).

Each student has an “only words” card in their language of instruction. They get in pairs and quiz each other on the type of Texas symbol being named. Student A reads their word to student B. Student B tells student A the Texas symbol in the card. After a discussion and agreement they trade the word cards and move on to a new partner. (Adapted from materials received from the Austin ISD Office of Academics)

Now that they have reviewed their Texas symbols, students will make up symbols for their school, using categories of their choice from those they used for the Texas symbols exercise.

Students can have discussions on how a symbol is chosen. Is it because it’s our favorite? Is it something that represents us because it somehow looks like us? Or is it something that there’s a lot of?

For example, the School Bird could be the blue jay (students get really excited whenever they see one), the grackle (there are so many of them) or the eagle (many students live in awe of these birds).

Once students have determined what the symbols for their school would be, then they create a flipbook. (Have a model flip book available so that students understand how to put one together.)
