Book Blurbs: What They Are and How to Write One A book blurb appears on the back of a book to get us to read the book! To write a book blurb, write a well-developed paragraph that includes: 1. Situation: main character(s), setting 2. Conflict: but don’t give away what happens! 3. Make the reader feel the mood and bring them

into the world of the book!) Give enough details but not too many.)

4. Name of book and author (Name of book is italicized. Ex. The Hunger Games)

5. Illustrate your blurb by drawing or finding an image!

6. Read aloud -- Revise and edit! Here is a student model from this year:

Keeper of the Lost Cities Sophie Foster is a twelve-year old child prodigy who lives in San Diego, California. She is a senior in high school and has a photographic memory. But this is not what makes Sophie special or an outcast; it’s her ability to read the mind of everyone around her. After bumping her head when she was five, she has had this power and has kept it a secret from everyone. When she meets Fitz another telepath, her world is turned upside down. After being forced to leave her world behind to go to his, where she won’t be such an outcast. She learns that she might be special after all, and the extent people are willing to go just to retrieve secrets from her head. Keeper of the Lost Cities is a thrilling fantasy novel by Shanon Messenger. It has many twists and turns with complicated characters and a hint of romance. — Kaia Chatterjee
