— Marilyn McGrath Lewis, Director of Undergraduate Admission, Harvard University

“Send us prepared students a la IB…It is the “best” high school prep curriculum an American school can offer.”

— Marilee Jones, Former Director of Undergraduate Admission, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

So how are we doing at ISM?So how are we doing at ISM?During the 2009/2010 school year, we had 164

seniors in the high school.Of those 164 seniors, 108 (66%) were awarded

the full IB Diploma (out of 109 diploma candidates) while another 56 were awarded IB certificates.

The average subject score was 5.410% of the IB Diploma candidates scored 40 or

above. The top score was 43 (out of a possible 45).The average diploma score was 34.

IB CertificatesIB CertificatesSome students might not need or want to do the

full IB DiplomaIt is possible for students to study one or more IB

subjects (with the rest of their subjects chosen from ISM non-IB offerings)

All IB subjects are studied for 2 yearsAn IB certificate is awarded for each IB subject

completed successfully (you must complete all internal and external requirements)

An IB certificate student does not have to comply with the ‘hexagon’ rules

Choose one or more subjects from any group, and study it/them at any level

Page 14: Grade 9 to10 courseselection 20102011

Why do IB certificates? Why do IB certificates?Exposure to the challenging and rigorous IB

curriculum (in that subject)Colleges will look favorably to any IB

certificates you take/achieveYou will be more prepared for your university

level coursesA good result in an IB subject will often result

in you receiving advanced placement (in that subject)

ISM HS DiplomaISM HS DiplomaThe ISM HS Diploma is a widely recognized HS

DiplomaYou would NOT be able to take any IB classes (If

you take an IB course, you are registered with the IB and MUST take the IB Exam in your senior year)

Not many Non-IB courses at ISM (Gr. 11/12)The number of students only taking the ISM

Diploma is quite smallWhile it is not the most rigorous program we have

at ISM, it is appropriate for university/college placement in the U.S.

What should I know now? What should I know now?It is quite possible a grade 9 student has no idea

(yet) what they want to take in Grade 11 and 12Some decisions students make now can impact

future options (IB choices/Post-secondary)Many IB subjects have pre-requisitesCertain subjects (as a result of their strict pre-

requisites) require some special care & attention by students/parents during the course selection process

Other Advice?Other Advice?PE BlockLifetime Activities: are various sports and activities from

around the world.  Many of them are individual sports but there are occasional team games.  More for those who prefer individual activities and less high pressure competitive situations (Pickleball, Aquatics, Archery, BirdiBall (type of golf), Tennis, Badminton, Frisbee and more)

Even MORE Advice?Even MORE Advice?“* another science class”If you are planning to do TWO sciences in

Grade 11 (let’s say IB Biology and IB Chemistry) in grade 11, we recommend that you take the related two full year sciences in grade 10 (Biology and Chemistry).

It would be your BEST preparation for IBOne of the two Grade 10 science classes

would be your science choice, the other would be your elective choice.

What colleges want to see? What colleges want to see? They want to see that you are challenging

yourself to the best of your ability with the courses you select.

They want to see the best possible grades you are capable of achieving.

This allows them to “predict” how successful you could be at their college.

They want to see a well rounded individual that contributes to their high school and community.
