Basketball Unit Grade 9 1 Grade 9 Sample Block Plan The following is sample block plan developed for a final teaching block in physical education. The lessons included in the unit are designed to be implemented over 4 weeks as required. The pace and order of the lessons will be adjusted as the unit is implemented. Expanded formal lesson plans would also be required for key lessons in the unit. Daily revisions and adjustments will be reflected in the daily working plans that the TC would create for each day of the block as the implementation of the unit progresses. Grade 9 Sample Block Plan

The following is sample block plan developed for a final teaching block in physical education.

The lessons included in the unit are designed to be implemented over 4 weeks as required. The pace and order of the lessons will be adjusted as the unit is implemented.

Expanded formal lesson plans would also be required for key lessons in the unit.

SUBJECT/STRAND

Physical Education - Basketball

CONTEXT

The unit will begin by having the students learn the basic rules of basketball, and the benefits of participating in sports such as basketball. These rules will be reinforced while the students are participating in various activities over successive days.

This unit will be implemented over a month. As implementation progresses, lessons will be revised to accommodate student needs and the time available.

OVERALL EXPECTATIONS

• demonstrate personal competence in applying movement skills and principles; • demonstrate knowledge of guidelines and strategies that enhance participation in recreation and sport activities.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Hoops maybe lowered or students may move closer to the hoop. Students can be excused from complicated drills to participate in basic partner drills. Students can progress at own pace. Written test will be administered one on one as required with more time provided for completion.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on participation and skill proficiency. Participation: Every day each student is expected to participate in all activities played. This includes trying the activities. Each activity covered in class will be observed and opportunities for each student to demonstrate the skill will be provided. Progress will be tracked using checklists.

Evaluation

In-class Skill Tests (dribbling and shooting) A written test on the rules of the game will be given at the end of the unit.

Station #1 Dribbling

Task: Dribble the basketball while weaving

through the cones. Complete the task 6 times -

3 with your left hand and 3 with your right. Remember:

Use your finger pads while dribbling.

Challenge: Use the stopwatch provided and see

how fast you can dribble through the cones.

Station #2 Dribbling

Task: Dribble through the zigzag pattern at least 3 times.

Each time use a different move, crossover, between the legs, or behind the back. Remember:

All- plant with the outside foot and keep the ball moving in

the direction of the next cone.

Crossover- Keep the ball low and explosive.

Between the legs- Wide step with leg.

Behind the back- Elbow up, go around your waist, and

contact your opposite hip.

Challenge: Using your partner as a defender, use the

different dribbles to get around them, you get 5 tries.

Station #3 Passing

Task: Stand outside the lane of cones with one partner on

each side. While running down the lane pass the ball back and forth using the different passes. Remember:

Chest- thumbs down and fingers out.

Bounce- in front of the receiver and ¾ the distance

between you and receiver.

Overhead- extend hands and follow through.

Challenge: Pair with another group and take turns trying to

intercept the passes. Use each of the passes to trick your

defender. Try to run the length of the cones, if the ball is intercepted stop and start again from the same place.

Task: Using the hoop practice both your left and

right lay-ups. Complete at least 10 with each hand. Remember:

Same knee up as arm shooting.

Challenge: See how many you can make in a row,

alternating left and right.

Task: Practice shooting using proper form. Try

at least one shot from each spot. Remember:

balance, elbow, eyes, and follow through.

Challenge: See how many points you can get.

You get one chance from each spot. Furthest spots away 5pts, middle 3pts, and closest 1pt.

Task: Practice your free throws using proper

form. Make at least 10 attempts. Remember:

balance, elbow, eyes, and follow through.

Challenge: See how many you can make in 30

seconds. Use your partner as a rebounder.

STUDENTS

Poor Demonstrates a total lack of ability when playing basketball. Has little or no understanding of the rules or strategies. Does not give effort to change their performance.

Fair Demonstrates difficulty in executing basic skills, which results in many unforced errors. Has very little understanding for the rules and strategies of basketball, which causes inconsistent performances.

Satisfactory

Demonstrates a basic understanding for the game of basketball and it's rules and strategies. Is able to perform the basic fundamentals involved with basketball. Performance is usually inconsistent, which results in many errors and turnovers.

Good Demonstrates the ability to perform the basics of basketball without making many mistakes. Chooses the appropriate strategy for certain situations, and displays consistency and a well-rounded ability during games. Understands all the rules of basketball

Excellent Demonstrates accelerated basketball skills and knowledge. Is able to consistently execute in all aspects of the game of basketball, rarely making a mistake. Anticipates the opposition's moves, and has excellent strategies for the specific situation.
