Hello Students!

Please find activities for Social Studies, Math, ELA and Science provided in the following booklet. While we are sure you’ll have lots of interesting things to do at home, we wanted to give you some activities to help keep you busy while classes are suspended.

A copy of this booklet will be placed in TEAMS, as well as any support documents necessary to guide you through your learning.

To access TEAMS from a home computer, follow the steps below:1. Go to retsd.mb.ca2. Click on “Office365” on the top menu bar3. Login with school credentials (If you forget your password you

will need to email your teacher and they will email you back with a new password)

4. Click on the “TEAMS” icon5. Select the subject you wish to access6. Most teachers will have the content you need in the “Files” or

the “Notebook” section. You can find these options on the top menu bar.

If you have any questions at any point in time, your teachers are here for you! The best way to get a hold of us is through email or the chat function on Teams. We will be checking both of these platforms many times throughout the school day. Feel free to pop into chat and send us a message, too- we’ll miss seeing you everyday!

Please, do NOT feel stressed about the work you are seeing in this booklet. We hope that, outside of these activities, you will also take time to visit with your family, relax, and even find time to spend OUTDOORS and ACTIVE when possible during this break. Build a puzzle, make a new recipe…you have so much time to try new things! How cool is that?

From,

Your Grade 8 Teachers

Social StudiesPart 1:Mr. Roger’s (a famous television show host from when us teachers were little) said:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my Mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers, you will always find people who are

helping’. To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still

so many helpers- so many caring people in this world”

No matter how tough times may be, people are always showing kindness towards each other. Your job is to find three positive news stories surrounding the Corona Virus/ COVID-19 outbreak. Is there a story highlighting health care professional’s continued efforts? Did someone ‘pay it forward’? Post the story (OR video) into your Social Studies chat on TEAMS. Your job is to:

1. Summarize the story.2. Identify who was affected by the act of kindness.3. Share your thoughts/emotions/reaction to the story.

In addition to posting your own articles, you are asked to engage with THREE other people’s posts. Read their articles, and write a quick response, sharing your reaction to the story, a connection you made to something else you’ve read or seen, etc. Let’s get some great conversation going, and share some positivity while we learn!

Part 2:Research the term “Social Distancing” and make a Public Service Announcement explaining its importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Your video must include:

- Why do health care professionals need us to practice social distancing? What do they mean by ‘flattening the curve’?

- What are we able to do during social distancing? What should we not do?

- Its effectiveness in slowing down contagious viruses- How the idea of social distancing links to the idea of social

responsibilityo Why is it our responsibility to practice social distancing?

- 5 ideas of activities that teens can do, from home, to keep them busy while ensuring themselves (and others!) are safe

Create a video on Sway or presentation on Powerpoint to share the information from above, and post it in the chat in teams to help teach others the importance of isolation during this time. Knowledge is power!

Math: Mogul Mathematicians: A Percent ProjectFor your math assignment, you will be creating your own business! Step 1: Decide what type of business you would like to start. You have to sell something (at least 10 different items or services) at your business. Is it a coffee shop? A restaurant? A hair salon? A sports equipment store? You choose! Create a list of 10 items, lettered a) through j). Don’t forget to come up with a name!

a) Make a list of 10 items or services available for purchase at your business. The items must be realistically priced.

b) Write a receipt for a customer who buys items/services a, c, e, g and i. Find the total cost, including 5% GST and 8% PST. An example receipt is provided for reference.

c) Write a receipt for a customer who buys items/services b, d, f, h and j. Find the total cost, including 5% GST and 8% PST.

d) Ask someone in your household to choose some items to buy (no limit!). Find the total cost, including 5% GST and 8% PST.

e) A customer comes to your store with a “30% off your entire purchase!” coupon that you put in a local newspaper. They buy items/services a, f and g. Find their total cost, including GST & PST.

f) A customer comes to your store and demands a refund for the items/services you provided. They were not satisfied with items/services b, e, h, and j. After a long discussion, you agree that a 45% discount is warranted. How much money will you be returning to the customer?

g) To celebrate your business’ first birthday, you are holding a special sale! You are deciding what sale would be better for you as a business owner: a 50% off sale, or

a 40% + an extra 10% sale. Which option would be better for you, as a business owner. Prove your answer using the most expensive item/service you sell.

h) A customer comes into your store and spends $149. At the counter, they realize they only have $120 cash on them. You decide to pay it forward, and decide to give them a special discount, taking just the $120 in cash. Estimate the percent discount you gave to them. How do you know?

i) Create a catalogue for your store! All 10 items must be included in your catalogue, labeled with the regular price, and illustrations of what they are (or cut and paste pictures from an actual catalogue!). Give 5 items a % discount. Indicate the % discount and SALE price!

ELA: Comic Book Plot Analysis and Journal EntriesJust like at school, we encourage you to READ, READ, READ while spending this time at home! After you have completed a book (novel, graphic novel, storybook- whatever you’re inspired to read) create a comic to recreate the plot of the story. Hey, if you feel inspired, create a comic chronicling your time at home. How cool would it be to turn your days at home into a fictional, imaginative scenario…have fun with it!Instructions:

1) Fill in a comic book to best represent the story you are re-telling. Students are encouraged to use a variety of texts, images and design elements to make it unique to their style. Below is an example of a constructed comic for the story “alien invaders”

2) Students will be asked to also create a storyboard for their respective comic book, highlighting what part of the story each box is saying and why the author chose this scene specifically.

Page 5: Grade 8 Team Home Learning Package 1 · Web viewHello Students! Please find activities for Social Studies, Math, ELA and Science provided in the following booklet. While we are sure

3) Create speech to tell the story. Use different speech and thought bubbles to add different dimensions.

Materials:1) Students must provide their own books. 2) Blank templates are available in Teams under files in ELA ; If you

do not have a printer at home, simply copy the template onto a piece of paper!

Journal Writing PromptsOver your break, we ask that you also take time to complete some journal writing. What did you do each day? What are your feelings about this experience? Interview your family members and share/compare their feelings with your own. Complete a phone call interview with an older family member (like a grandparent) and ask them if this experience has them making connections to another experience in their life. Here are other prompts you could use for your journaling:

1. Persuade someone to visit a place in the world that you would like to visit.

2. Write about why you should be hired for your dream job.3. Weigh the pros and cons of owning a pet. (any animal you want)4. Why should people be kind to others?5. How important do you think sports are in school? And Why?6. Are field trips important to a school experience?7. Does music help people study or distract them? Does it depend on the

type of music or the person?8. Convince someone to give money to a charity. Each journal entry should be a minimum of 1 paragraph. It can be written on paper OR entered in Teams to share with your teachers! Feel free to add pictures in, too!

ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY WAVE RESEARCHAs we’ve started learning about light, we have come to realize that light is a form of energy. We have also started to realize that visible light is only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. For your inquiry research project, students are being asked to select a specific type of electromagnetic energy and research types of tools, machines and workplaces that use them.

Instruction: 1. Students will select one of the following electromagnetic energy

A) Gamma Rays  C) Ultraviolet Rays E) MicrowavesB) X-Rays  D) Infrared Rays F) Radio

Waves2. Students will gather information from credible sources and reference

them in their final product. Students will present the information in their own words to the best of their ability and use strategies to appeal to the audience.

A) Identify and explain the selected electromagnetic radiation B) Identify and explain the type of technology that uses the

selected electromagnetic radiation C) Students will critically think and describe the positive and

negative aspects of their selected type of technology and their selected electromagnetic radiation.

Presentation: Students will have free reign on how they would like to create a digital or hard copy presentation. If students do not have the ability to come up with an idea on their own, we suggest using PowerPoint or Sway as all students have access to this though their Microsoft Office account via the school division.

Assessment: Here are the skills you are practicing while completing this inquiry assignment:

Art:

Continue to practice drawing and developing skills on things we have covered in Art.

1. Zentangles: Zen “It is a state of mind where the mind is not fixed on or occupied by any thought”.

Make a shape/drawing and fill with a variety of zentangle patterns.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXjiThF1LXU

2. Sketchbook: Work on drawings of your choice for your sketchbook/blank paper. Look around your room/house for objects to draw. Apply one or more: line, texture, value, colour.

If you have access to the internet, look for art tutorials to help you draw, for new ideas or just to learn. Everyone knows Bob Ross and his “Happy Trees” check out one if his videos. We will be doing a paint unit in art.
