I Found: Tom Finder

5The Eye

All of the sudden, in one flash, he forgot who he was. This fifteen year old found himself covered in stains on the streets of Calgary. Tom found a notebook and a pen, which he writes what he finds or write what he wants. He prays he would find Dan-iel Wolflegs, for a worried father, through the long journey of actually discovering himself. He was named a Finder, who was believed to have a finder in him. Later on in the year, he will reach his goal and discover who he is after he buys himself a billboard.

Mozart brings in interesting music to many people, but why are you interested in Mozart and in particular the CD The Magic Flute?I love to listen to the latest Mozart’s CD The Magic Flute. It was very soothing and famil-iar as I listened to it but I took it off to find more clues about my life. Mozart is a very familiar name and I think it will help me uncover who I really am. Recently, Samuel Wolflegs called you a finder. What is a Finder and do you believe Sam is right?

A Finder is a person who finds things that might be needed or helps out others who can’t find what the finder can. I found a notebook, a pen, a blanket and other. I believed him because I started to find stuff that I believed I could find. I find stuff that was useful and helped me on the way. Then I started to believe Sam.

You have lots of mysterious things going on right now, but what is really important for you right now?

I believe that finding Daniel was more ef-ficient and right because I’m a finder. It’s my job to find and help those who can’t find things they need or want to see. Sam is very worried and he won’t eat if Daniel is not eating. “Daniel is not eating tonight,” he would gravely say after we get something to eat and he would moan and mourn because he misses his son. Sam kicked Daniel out of his house because he wouldn’t agree to house rules, but Sam now regrets about what he did back then.

What’s your idea about your life right now, do you think you’re on the right track after discovering some things about yourself? For example, finding out you were a fighter. I think I am on the right track, even though the police won’t help me find my identity because I don’t know my last name. I just need to find Daniel, who’s dad might be so happy when I find his lost son. Then that Agent guy I talked to might get me a corner since he thinks I got guts and I’m a great poet. I think finding out my strengths was what I really know right now. God is very important to many people, and you suggested to yourself to go find God. Do you think god will help you uncover who you really are? I think that believing in god, God is the only person to rely on because a man at a church told me that God doesn’t forget his people. He’s the only one who knows me and I believe that he can uncover the truth or leave clues for me to discover myself.

If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea,I’ll sail the world to find youIf you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can’t see,I’ll be the light to guide you

Find out what we’re made ofWhen we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like 1 2 3I’ll be thereAnd I know when I need it I can count on you like 4 3 2And you’ll be thereCause that’s what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

Wooooh, Woooohyeah Yeah

If you toss and you turn and you just can’t fall asleepI’ll sing a songbeside youAnd if you ever forget how much you really mean to meEveryday I willremind you

OhhFind out what we’re made ofWhen we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like 1 2 3I’ll be thereAnd I know when I need it I can count on you like 4 3 2You’ll be thereCause that’s what friends are supposed to do, oh yeahWooooh, WoooohYeah YeahW

You’ll always have my shoulder when you cryI’ll never let goNever say goodbye

You can count on me like 1 2 3I’ll be thereAnd I know when I need it I can count on you like 4 3 2You’ll be thereCause that’s what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

Wooooh, Woooohyou can count on me cos’ I can count on you

Count On MeBy: Bruno Mars

In the chorus, lies a very elegant phrase, “You can Count On Me like 1 2 3, I’ll be there, cause that’s what friends are supposed to do...” What do you think this song means?

Could this song be based on a true story Bruno Mars went through? I believe theme of this song is that you can rely on your friends and they can rely on you. Some quotes from the song include: “When we are called to help our friends in

need” and “I’ll be the light to guide you”. These two parts of the song say that when you have friends, they are there for you when you feel immovable or dis-oriented. So no

matter what, true friends would help each other and stay loyal.

Three Figurative Language“I’ll Sail the World to find you” - An exaggeration“I’ll be the light to guide to you” - Personification

“Everyday I will remind you” - Also an exaggerationI think these poetic devices help the song and make it better by helping to exaggerate the song and how much the person could really care. “I’ll sail the world to find you” helps make the song better because it means that this person really cares about that

person he/she wants to find. That’s the same thing for “Everyday I will remind you” but I’ll be the light to guide you can be a personification. It’s a personification because this

person wants to be a light, which the light can guide someone.

Book RelationThis song relates to my book because Count On Me is all about friendship and relying on that one friend when you feel sad. Similarly, Tom Finder is also about finding needs that some want. In the story, some people trusted Tom because he was a nice person,

always there to lend a hand. Tom finds people they adored and to do favors for people. What they have in common is that both of these main characters are very lavish and

they will do anything for the friends they care about. Tom made friends, the Count On

My Character has friends, and they all help each other. Another similarity that occurs is that both of the main characters from the song and

the book both believe. According to the song, the main character won’t sojourn or rest until he/she found what they’ve been looking for. “If you ever find yourself stuck in the

middle of the sea, I’ll sail the world, to find you” is an example of what I am saying. In the book, Tom Finder is shown that he believed he could rent a billboard to com-

municate and ask anyone if they lost a son. He also believed he was a good speller and spelt Pterodactyl.

8 The Eye

I’m from gloomy-dusty spaces,Where crickets chirp to the muted

grace.I am from a place of suppressed se-

crets,With too much concealed in open

spaces.From the stunning dawn rays,

Where the shine brings out my deep-ened soul.

From the who-cares,And abruptly bolting off to a new

blissful home.

I am from the solemn forgotten parks,Where we’re strays, doing some per-

iled stunts To get to possessions we need.

From the freezing rain of despair,Where soul-shuddering tears escape

from my resisting eyes. From the lavish feelings for hollow-

grave societies,In great deep troubles,

Where I care for deprived,With Scrumptious Scorching Soup.My fist of courage will punch a hole,Through the darkening-haunted sky.

I am a dusky-undetectable chameleon,Camouflaged in great disarray,

Where I forgot whom I am, my lovely melodious memory,

Where I found myself, bloody and tangled with life,

On haunting streets inhabited shad-owy figures.

I am from unpleasant-cruel names,Where a stony-blinding force,

Struck my oblivious head,Erasing my fleeting hopes and dreams.

In a sinister place,Where I found my buried treasure of

wants and desires.A person I loved,

Who deceived my dirty-melancholy eyes.

Now I finWd myself,Deserted on a broken road,

Where I construct my ferocity and screech,

And felt a harsh pound in my heart.I now know what I can find,

My burdened soul,Inside of me.

Where I Find Hope Martine Leavitt, author of Tom Finder, claims, “Every boy has to find out who he really is. This book tells those boys, and girls, that they can create their own identity – they

don’t have to let critical voices determine who they are.” The Calgary based novel, Tom Finder is full of haunting mysteries and filled with imagination, exploring a young boy

who awakes in dark-miserable, lonesome Calgary Park, not knowing who or where he is. Should Tom Finder be included in the Grade Eight Curriculum? I believe that Tom finder should be included in the Grade Eight curriculum and should be recommended for a va-riety of ages. Tom Finder should be included in the curriculum as it shows how this book connects to things that happen to real life of a homeless person. It is very suspenseful as there are cryptic twists and turns. With a very good flow, it engages the readers, as they

would understand the lives of homeless people.

10 The Eye

I believe that this book should be included in the Great Eight curriculum because it relates to our real lives as we say homeless people on the streets. If others read this book, they

would realize how a person with amnesia felt, someone who didn’t have a place to live in felt. This book is as Martine quoted, “This book tells those boys, and girls, that they can create their own identity.” We don’t know how people feel. We aren’t psychic, but a novel like this can help us sense the true feelings of someone who’s lost. You might be like Tom

Finder, as someone might abandon you. In the book, Samuel Wolflegs states, “Where is home for you?” This connects to many

people who walk on the streets and sleep in boxes. “I will stay by the river, praying, until you find him” is what Sam also says as what a apprehensive parent would say when their

kid is lost like his.

As readers flip the page and onto the next, they can’t help their-selves, as they want to know what happens, what ominous feeling you will get when you want to know if Tom Finder finds himself. You can’t put down the book because of the many characters Tom meets, and will Tom find his true self. There are numerous favors right behind his very back, groaning to find his/her significant person/object. You want to know Tom Finder,

who is a very nice and brave boy, fighting his way through the dark. In the book, you want to know who Pepsi actually is. His cruel looked like he was almost killed. “Peter died after

a long struggle with substance abuse. He is survived by his loving parents….” As Tom reads out this very grave anecdote, it reveals the identity of someone you are dyeing to

learn about.

11The Eye

The book has a very good flow, with the thought from Tom of being invisible. Tom feels like a chameleon, where you can imagine because of the great story. This story charges up the reader, widening the eyes of the reader. This engages many people, to find that a boy would risk himself for people he helps. This book could start some-one’s day and makes him or her realize the true feelings of being homeless and for-

gotten. He wants help, but many believed they tried. In the book, Sam thinks Tom is a finder as he argues when Tom believes he is talking non-sense. “You can repay me. I prayed for a finder, and you found me.” Readers just want to know what it’s about,

and it works perfectly with the enigmatic story.Written by an award winning author of the Marmawell Trilogy, this book is yet too

earn many readers because others will learn the true story of a homeless person. This book should be included in the curriculum, because of my reasons and arguments.

Others will get to learn what it would be like to be alone, without anyone car-ing about you. The book would make you look up in the sky, asking: “I wonder what a homeless person is doing

right now?” This is why I want this book to be in the Grade Eight

Curriculum.
