What is Service Learning?? Any ideas??

Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Service Learning is based upon the idea the students will learn about the needs in the world, our country, province, city and community and determine how we can specifically help. We need to learn about the issues, problems and concerns before we can do something about the issue. We then need to have a plan in place and organize ourselves before carrying out our final goal. After, we will need to be reflect and analyze what we have done, how we have helped others and determine if there are next steps to complete our project. It’s not an easy venture, but remember we are going to help others and make a difference.

Our goal in Service Leaning is how we can made a difference in our school community, local community, across the province, the country and the world. We are going to look at the needs of people on many levels, from the issues of poverty in the core of Winnipeg, how we can help people around the world from natural disasters such as earthquakes, tropical storms and limited clean water access. We will also be looking at SMS and how we can continue to improve and build SMS into a respectful building with active citizens and students who can support, encourage, and assist others.

What are characteristics of Service Learning??

-Helping others in positive, real and meaningful ways.-Working as a team towards the same goal.-Using and solving real life problems.-Actively contributing as citizens and community members

There are so many ways we can help, support and make a difference in the world.

In pairs or trios, spend a few minutes gathering some ideas on how we as a class can make a difference on both a local and global scale. Can we help a particular group or organization? Are we helping with service, or financials??

Answer these questions as you are working and be prepared to share your information with your classmates.1) What specific can be done to help others?2) What materials or assistance are we able to provide?3) Is this a local or global issue or crisis?
