QUESTION 2: INVESTIGATION [23]

The Gr 7B class designed the following experiment to compare the best insulator. They measured the temperature decrease of hot water in each container after every 2 minutes and the following results were obtained. They put the same volume of water in each container and also measured the initial temperature of water in all the 5 containers.

The following temperature results were obtained and recorded after 10minutes.

1.2 The Grade 7s planted bean plants using the following method.

Method:

Place two been seedlings in each container. Make sure they are evenly spaced. Container A, B and C must be watered everyday with the same amount of water.

Place Container A in a sunny place, such as on a window sill.

Place Container B in a sunny area, but place the large beaker over the container, so that the seedling’s fresh air supply is blocked.

Place Container C in a dark area. Use the cereal box to make a light shield for the seedling. Cut some windows into the bottom of the cardboard box so that the plant can get air, but very little light.

Place Container D in the same sunny area as Container A, but do not give the seedling in Container D water for the duration of the investigation.

New bean varieties bred to beat heat

Scientists have bred 30 new varieties of "heat-beating" beans designed to provide protein for the world's poor in the face of global warming.

Described as "meat of the poor", beans are a key food source for more than 400 million people across the developing world, but the area suitable for growing them could drop 50 percent by 2050 because of global warming, endangering tens of millions of lives, scientists said.

Some of the 30 new types also have higher iron content to help increase their nutritional value, CGIAR, the research group backing the new discoveries, said in a statement.

New heat tolerant beans might be able to handle average global temperature increases of 4 degrees.

Bean growers in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa - including Nicaragua, Haiti, Brazil, Honduras, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo - are likely to be the worst hit by global warming, researchers said.

Some of these countries, dependent on small farmers to feed themselves, are not in good positions to adapt to a warming planet.

Clayton Campanhola, director of plant production and protection at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, said the discovery of new "climate smart" bean strains is a big deal.
