Unit Overview
Over the course of this unit, students will be exploring their identity, but not just to discover more about ourselves, but to find out how we can express our identity in a variety of ways.

Central Idea - “Identity is expressed in many ways.”
Literacy “We can learn about, learn through and learn
to appreciate language in meaningful, real-world contexts”
An Inquiry into… the organizational structures, and language features of poetry and prose
Understand, interpret and experiment with a range of devices and deliberate word play in poetry and other literary texts
Create literary texts that explore students’ own experiences and imagining
Use a range of software including word processing programs to construct, edit and publish written text
Identify features of online texts that enhance readability including text, navigation, links, graphics and layout
Mathematics “We can use numbers in a variety of ways to help us find patterns and solve problems in
real life situations”
An inquiry into… how we use patterns in the the base 10 system to extend numbers infinitely in both directions.
Investigate and use the properties of odd and even numbers
Recognize, represent and order numbers to at least tens of thousands
Apply place value to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to at least tens of thousands to assist calculations and solve problems

POSSIBLE HOME LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND QUESTIONS We encourage discussion at home to be done in the language your family is most comfortable with
- Visit the HWEO Learning Space for more information on in class learning engagements
- Discuss how your family's culture expresses itself (dance, song, traditions).
- Look at what you do daily (routines and rituals) at home. How does this compare from what you did when you were living in another country?
- Look through family photos to make connections to your family's identity.
EAL - BEGINNERS Writing: Introduce nouns and verbs. Write using nouns and verbs in simple sentences. Increase vocabulary. Introduce adjectives that describe personality. Introduce Signal words (Sequence, time order) Reading: read and follow short simple instructions, demonstrate understanding of simple texts. Decode unfamiliar words and recognize meanings of some basic homonyms (words with multiple meanings)
INTERMEDIATE Writing: Review parts of speech verbs, nouns,adj. Use parts of speech to strengthen writing. Write simple compound sentences. Increase vocabulary Write using signal words (Sequence, time order) Reading: Improve comprehension and fluency. Know the meaning of some basic homonyms (words with multiple meanings) Introduce root words and prefixes. Know and understand key academic vocabulary
ADVANCED Writing: Review parts of speech verbs, nouns,adj. Use parts of speech to strengthen writing. Write simple compound sentences using more expressive vocabulary.
