LEARNING TARGET
•OBJECTIVE: USE REFLECTION TO THOUGHTFULLY PROCESS YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE EXPERIENCE
•SUCCESS CRITERIA: CREATE A POWERPOINT BASED ON YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE REFLECTION
THE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CYCLE
• Students who reflect on their experiences get more from those experiences
• After an activity, effective learners think about what they did
• After reflecting, effective learners generalize and apply what they have learned
GUIDING QUESTIONS
These questions guide how we learn:
• What? Report the facts and events of an experience
• So what? Analyze your experience
• Now what? Consider how these experiences connect to your future
WHAT?
What?
• What is the name of the organization or event you worked with?
• What problem or issue was being addressed?
• What did you do?
• How did you do it?
SO WHAT?So what?
• Did you learn or use a new skill as part of this experience?
• How was your experience different from what you expected?
• What did you learn about this organization or the community they serve?
• Did this experience change the way you look at people/the community?
SO WHAT?Now what?
• How could these skills be useful in your education or career?
• What other work is being done to help address this issue/problem?
• How can you apply what you learned from this experience?
• What information can you share with your peers or the community?
• If you could do this again, how would you do it differently?
COMMUNITY SERVICE PRESENTATION IDEAS
• Take photos to include in a slide show
• Shoot video that you can edit and share with your advisory
• Write a letter-to-the-editor of a local paper you can read to your advisory regarding what you learned from this experience
• Keep a journal during your experience so that you can easily recall detailed memories of your experience
SAMPLE VIDEO
• This video combines words and music
• It only focuses a little bit on what the student learned and how that can be applied to the student’s future
SAMPLE VIDEO
• in this example, the speaker explains what she learned and how it applies to her future
• She doesn’t explain what she did in detail
YOUR PRESENTATION
• For your presentation, you do not need to create a video, that is optional
• You will need to reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how what you learned can apply to your future
• You will create a visual aid that is readable from all parts of the room
• Follow the guiding questions in this PowerPoint as the basis of your presentation: What? So What? Now What?
