First Grade Newsletter Week of 2/5/18

Weekly Themes/Units:

ELA- (Listening and Learning) Domain 6: Astronomy- Students will learn all about the solar system; including the planets, sun, stars, and moon. Skills Unit 4-Students will read and write one-syllable words with r-controlled vowels /er/ and /ar/, and use an apostrophe to form contractions. Students will read and understand decodable text. Students will decode multi-syllabic words, and learn about present and past tense verbs. Students will ask and answer questions orally and in writing requiring literal recall and understanding of the details and facts.

MATH- (Module 3- Ordering and Comparing Length Measurements as Numbers) Students will rename and measure with centimeter cubes, using their standard unit name of centimeters. Students will order, measure, and compare the length of objects before and after measuring with centimeter cubes, solving compare with difference unknown word problems. Students will measure the same objects from Topic B with different non-standard units simultaneously to see the need to measure with a consistent unit. Students will understand the need to use the same units when comparing measurements with others.

SOCIAL STUDIES- Students will learn about the lives of unsung heroes and then identify a characteristic of each unsung hero by listening to (viewing) a biography and discussing information from the biography/video/article.

REMINDERS/NOTES:-Please remember to send your child dressed appropriately for the playground and the cold/snowy weather (warm coats, snowpants, hats, gloves/mittens, snow boots).

-Please remind your first grader to bring their HOME/SCHOOL FOLDER each day, as part of their first grade responsibilities. Also, please take out the “stay home” papers each night. PLEASE SIGN AND RETURN REPORT CARD ENVELOPES AND KEEP THE PAPERWORK THAT WAS INSIDE.

-This week, homework packets will be given out on Monday and will be due back to school on Friday. Please make sure your child is reading each night and completing their reading log.
