OFFICE OF CAREER SERVICES GRADUATE CAREER OUTCOME REPORT

INTRODUCTION The Office of Career Services at Youngstown State University is pleased to share the results of

the Class of 2013-2014 Graduate Career Outcome Report. A culmination of a year-long data

collection and analysis process, this report provides comprehensive information regarding the

employment and continuing education decisions made by Youngstown State University students

who completed their degrees during the 2013-2014 academic year. The University community

will learn from the information presented in this report where YSU graduates are working, in

what capacity, and starting salary information by college and major.

METHODOLOGY The information presented in this report was obtained through a survey distributed to 1,771

graduates who received degrees in December 2013, May 2014. A copy of the survey can be

found on pages 70-71.

Efforts to contact graduates to complete the survey included direct mail, a telephone campaign,

and speaking with students at Grad Central. Graduates were also given the opportunity to

complete the questionnaire electronically. The following table outlines the timing of these

contact methods (methods used subsequent to the mailed questionnaire were limited to only

those graduates who had yet to respond to previous efforts):

REPORTING RESULTS The results for the Class of 2013 – 2014 are presented in two sections in this report. The first

section includes data and results for the graduates of the six undergraduate colleges, and the

second section includes data and results for graduates of the School of Graduate Studies.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF SURVEY RESULTS

RESPONSE RATE: Completed surveys were received from 826 of the 1,771 graduates from

the Class of 2013/2014 for an overall response rate of 47%. The response rate for the

undergraduate colleges was 48%, and 41% for the School of Graduate Studies.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Of those who responded to the survey, a total of 60.89% of the

undergraduates for the Class of 2013-2014 and 69.81% from the School of Graduate Studies

reported being employed full-time. A total of 10% of the undergraduates and 14.15% of the

respondents from the School of Graduate Studies reported being employed part-time. A total of

7.49% of the undergraduate respondents and 9.43% of the School of Graduate Studies

respondents reported not being employed.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS AND GENDER: The results regarding employment status for the

Class of 2013-2014 with respect to gender reveal the following:

Of the undergraduate respondents, 57.29% of female respondents and 49.89% of the

male respondents reported being employed full-time while 63.51% of the female and

36.49% of male respondents from the School of Graduate Studies reported being

employed full-time.

A total of 12.76% of female undergraduate respondents and 6.82% of male

undergraduate respondents reported that they were employed part-time, while 13.85%

of the female respondents and 14.63% of the male respondents from the School of

Graduate Studies reported being employed part-time.

A total of 1.30% of female undergraduate respondents and 2.37% of male

undergraduate respondents reported serving in the U.S. Military or being involved in a

Volunteer or Service Program while 1.54% of female respondents and 4.88% of male

respondents from the School of Graduate Studies reported serving in the U.S. Military or

being involved in a Volunteer or Service Program.

A total of 7.03% of female undergraduate respondents and 8.01% of the male

undergraduate respondents reported not being employed while 10.77% of the female

respondents and 7.32% of the male respondents from the School of Graduate Studies

reported not being employed.

GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: A total of 65.38% of the undergraduate respondents who

reported being employed full-time did not relocate after graduation, while 58.11% of the

respondents from the School of Graduate Studies who reported being employed full-time did not

relocate after graduation. A total of 15.03% of the undergraduate respondents employed full-

time reported relocating 30 or more miles outside of Youngstown, Ohio after graduation, while

18.92% of the respondents from the School of Graduate Studies who reported being employed

full-time indicated that they had relocated 30 or more miles outside of Youngstown, Ohio. With

respect to relocating out-of-state, 13.21% of the undergraduate respondents and 10.81% of the

respondents from the School of Graduate Studies who reported being employed full-time had

relocated outside Ohio.

DISTRIBUTION OF SALARIES OF UNDERGRADUATES EMPLOYED FULL-TIME:

The distribution of annual salaries for graduates employed full-time was:

17.32% reported annual salaries of over $50,000

17.53% reported salaries of $40,000 - $49,000

30.53% reported salaries of $25,000 - $39,999

8.43% reported salaries of less than $25,000

26.20% of the respondents employed full-time did not provide salary information

WITH RESPECT TO GENDER: Of the undergraduate male respondents who completed the

survey, 25.22% reported annual salaries greater than $50,000 as compared to 7.93% female

respondents. A total of 15.77% of male respondents reported annual salaries of $40,000 -

$49,999 compared to 18.50% of female respondents. A total of 25.23% male respondents

reported annual salaries of $25,000 - $39,999 compared to 35.68% of female respondents.

Also, 6.30% of male respondents reported salaries of less than $25,000 as compared to 13.22%

of female respondents. The number of undergraduate respondents who chose not to provide

annual salary information was: 26.58% of males and 24.67% of females.

DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES RESPONDENTS EMPLOYED

FULL-TIME:

The distribution of annual salaries for respondents of the School of Graduate Studies employed

full-time was:

41.89% reported annual salaries of over $50,000

18.92% reported salaries of $40,000 - $49,000

18.92% reported salaries of $25,000 - $39,999

2.70% reported salaries of less than $25,000

17.57% of the respondents employed full-time did not provide salary information

WITH RESPECT TO GENDER: The results regarding annual salaries of graduates from the

School of Graduate Studies employed full-time, when looked at from a gender perspective,

tended to find male respondents at the higher end of the salary scale and for females at the

lower-middle ranges. A total of 53.57% of male respondents and 32.65% of female

respondents reported salaries greater than $50,000 annually; 3.57% of male respondents and

26.53% of female respondents reported annual salaries of $40,000 - $49,999; 10.71% of male

respondents and 22.45% of female respondents reported annual salaries of $25,000 - $39,999;

only 3.57% of male respondents and 8.16% of female respondents reported salaries of less

than $25,000; and 28.57% of male respondents and 10.20% of female respondents employed

full-time did not include salary information.

GRADUATES PURSUING ADDITIONAL EDUCATION: A total of 168 undergraduate

respondents, representing 23% of the undergraduates reported that they were pursuing

additional education. Individuals continuing their education were enrolled at approximately 44

different academic institutions.

A total of 6 respondents from the School of Graduate Studies, representing 6% of these

graduates, indicated that they were continuing their education. Individuals continuing their

education were enrolled at approximately 6 different academic institutions.
