Worship Forum Findings
The Worship and Music Board, in
conjunction with the Church Council,
held forums in the hopes of providing
and gaining information regarding the
possibility of moving from two Sunday
morning worship services to one Sun-
day morning service.
After two forums were held the
Church Council and Worship and Mu-
sic Board have decided to table the
change until more information can be
gathered.
The Alternative Worship Task-
force will be presenting information
on their findings on June 6,
2010. June 6 will be one service at
9:00 with the presentation of informa-
tion at the end of service.

worth’s Store in
Muscatine. But, she
found a good job at Cen-
tral State Bank where
she was in charge of the
safety deposit area and
worked in the loan de-
partment for many
years. She retired from
Central State Bank.
One reason, was that her
husband became ill. She
cared for him until he
died.
Verna met John Freund later
in life. “We just hit it off.” His wife
had died, and they were married
and went to live on Orchard Ave.
“I’ve always enjoyed life. My hus-
bands and I didn’t argue. Some
people go around being mad. I
guess I was always the boss,” she
laughed. “When we had decisions
we went according to our money.
We didn’t spend like people do now.
Maybe it’s because I worked in a
bank. I just took care of business!”
John died after a long hospi-
talization, and Verna went to live
at the Towers in Muscatine. She
said she really liked the people
there. “I like to care for and wait
on people.” But Verna had a major
As you enter her
room at Lutheran
Homes, you catch a
sweet, light smell of
her lovely familiar per-
fume. You know you
are visiting a sweet
and gentle lady, Verna
Freund.
Verna was born
near Davenport, Iowa.
She worked at the
Woolworth’s Store
when she was intro-
duced to her future husband, Al-
fred Kahl, through another couple.
They moved to Muscatine when
their daughters Elaine and Janet
were in high school, and joined
Grace Lutheran Church.
As a young couple in southeast
Iowa, they loved to dance. “There
were dance halls all around
Muscatine,” Verna smiled, “The
Elks and the Moose were favorite
hangouts!” Her best dance steps
were the 2-step and the jitter-bug,
and they danced to live local bands.
Playing cards was a social event for
couples, and their favorite game
was “500.”
Alfred was engaged in farming,
and Verna worked at the Wool-
stroke. After extensive rehab, she
returned to the Towers. That is
where I had the pleasure to meet
her. I was amazed at how well she
cared for herself there in independ-
ent living. She was a real inspira-
tion!
Daughters Elaine Bender and
Janet McClure are wonderful care
and support for Verna. Elaine
lives in Davenport and Janet here
in Muscatine and is a member at
Grace. They blessed Verna with 5
grandchildren. Verna recalls her
earlier years at Grace. “I’ve always
liked the people who go to Grace,”
she smiled. She taught Sunday
School and said the 5 year olds
were her favorites. She was active
in WELCA and had served as
President.
Verna attends activities at Lu-
theran Homes, as well as the
church services. “I think I’m doing
okay for 90,” she laughed. “We are
trying to get enough people to-
gether to play 500. Not many peo-
ple can play it here. We have three
so far, but we need a fourth!” Any
takers? You would have a delight-
ful time with a delightful lady!

Grace Fellowship Potluck Our group at the May Fellow-
ship Potluck was small, but we al-
ways enjoy our time together. May
18th was a special day. We cele-
brated the 50th Anniversary of
Pastor Don Sondrol’s ordination
with cake and song. The food was
good, but the fellowship of our
group is the true blessing. It is so
wonderful to learn new things
about our Brothers and Sisters in
Christ. Thank you for the good
food. Hope to see you next month
on June 15th.
Also, I am looking for someone
to step forward to host the July
20th potluck. I will be on vacation
with Al and the girls that week. If
you could help, please call me at
262-8225 or 299-7394. Have a
great month. See you in church.

Youth & Family Ministry
The gospel is analog. It can't be
automated. It will never be digi-
tally delivered. Even if someone
hears it on the radio or reads it on
a Web page, the message itself is
written down or spoken by a living,
breathing human being who heard
it from another one -- going all the
way back to the biblical writers
themselves.
That's one reason we are con-
vinced that the good news of Jesus
is true. We can see with our eyes
how it has changed the lives of the
people who have taught us about
God from His Word. We can see it
at work in them. Their lives are
evidence that this powerful mes-
sage is real.
Don't look at the Christian
leaders you admire who are really
living as they teach and say, “That
works for them and not for me.”
Look at them and say, “This works
for them! Look how God works in
them!” Then, we're told, imitate
their faith. Copy them. Follow their
example.
It's the same Christ in you that
is alive and active in them. Don't
give up.
Think: Who are the people
who have spoken the Word of God
to you? How has their relationship
with God
changed their
lives over time?
How could you imitate their faith?
Pray: Ask God to help you to
imitate the faith of the trustworthy
Christian leaders in your life who
have definitely been changed by
Him. Thank Him that the same
Jesus is at work in your heart.
Do: Pick one or two people you
would consider Christian role mod-
els in your life and ask them how
they trust God and how their faith
in Christ has changed them over
time.
-Pastor Mac

Traveling through Kansas this summer? Look up one of our Grace Members! Jake Vander Linden will be
spending his summer working at
Great Plains Theatre in Abilene,
Kansas. Jake was cast in two sum-
mer stock musicals after audition-
ing at Midwest Auditions in St.
Louis, Missouri last February.
Jake was one of the students se-
lected by his college professor to
audition, an honor in itself. Jake
will be a Junior at Millikin Univer-
sity, Decatur, IL, this fall studying
first semester in London, England
for B.F.A. Music Theatre.
For more information and show
dates, check out
www.greatplainstheatre.com.
Jake is cast as Dr. Carrasco in
“Man of LaMancha” in June and as
Attendees: Sue Wilder, Pastor

Blessings Forward
Brief discussion around in-
creasing the Blessings Forward
(Time and Talent) to 365 days a
year by having functional area
sheets available all the time and
locate in the breezeway. Taking
this from a once a year awareness
to year round awareness.
Discuss with Hospitality in re-
gards to their program of providing
information of functions within
GLC.
Stories Program
Great discussion around the
meaning and direction of this ini-
tiative. Concern around this being
a “shooting star” program within
the church and how can we have
all functional areas of GLC be a
part of this initiative. Making this
a “constellation” project.
Discussion will happen at May
Council meeting to involve all func-
tional areas so that we can gain
traction in all educational aspects
of GLC.
This is more than a journal just
to keep a journal. Relay the impor-
Congregational Life May 13, 2010 tance of journaling and celebrating
what is good in our lives through
Christ. We fall short sometimes in
being disciples in recognizing the
people, the experiences, etc. in our
lives and how God (through Christ)
is always there for us. Through
what internal and external chan-
nels can we develop with Account-
ability Groups, Bible Studies, etc
that can tie in (formally and infor-
mally) to everyone doing this as a
part of their daily lives and not just
going through the motions.
Plan is to modify ELCA’s
“God’s work. Our hands.” into a
GLC version of “God’s work. My
hands.” Making our relationship
with Christ personal.
Explain more fully God’s work
(GROW). This program is an ex-
tension and revision of the Stories
Program goal to help GLC mem-
bers feel comfortable in celebrating
the blessings in our lives as what
they are and who they are through
and not about being boastful. As
we do this internally we can then
be comfortable going to the commu-
nity and beyond. Go and proclaim,
give witness to the spirit that
moves you, be not just hearers of
the word but also doers.
The questions have been re-
vised since last meeting and will be
closer to the following: Who has
been a blessing in my life today?
As I am part of the body of Christ
how have I acted as His hands and
feet today?
Next Steps for Stories Program
Next steps will all be consid-
ered as Congo Life finalizes the
Blessings Journal initiative with
Council.
Congo Life to drive “Train the
Trainer” program in near future
with input from Council heads as
needed.
How to “go to market” with
Train the Trainer? Outside re-
sources? Inside resources? Pastor
DVD? Help in starting a study or
group. Date, time, info? Schedul-
ing and communication
Realization is this touches a lot
of ministry and education within
GLC. Need effective implementa-
tion.

ther review as virus conditions dic-
tate.
* One Sunday service for summer
starts May 30th. Saturday night
5:30 services begin May 29th at
Grace.
* June 5th Saturday night service
will be at Zion. Nancy Cromer will

worship assistants/ushers.
* It came to Jan Pohl's attention
that Pastor Don Sondrol's 50th an-
niversary of his ordination is May
18th. The Worship and Music
Board would like to honor him in
some way. Carlin will talk with
Pastor Sondrol to see when he

As our Sunday school and
young disciples programs end for
the summer, I would like to thank
all of our volunteers who give of
themselves to help our
youth/adults with their spiritual
formation, building a closer rela-
tionship and understanding of
Christ. They put in hours well be-
yond the time within the class-
room. I hope they consider con-
tinuing this service in the fall, and
that they would encourage others
to get involved.
Perhaps others have a desire to
teach and mentor but the thought
of committing to every week does
not work for you. Please talk
amongst yourselves, with me or
other Christian Education board
members. We are open to having
class time shared amongst teachers
on a rotating basis, but we need to
know who you are. We will use the
Blessings Forward information
that we have received and contact
those who have expressed an inter-
est in the many facets of Christian
Education to see how best your tal-
ents can be lifted up for the glory of
God.
A special thank you to Jill Rice
for her services as our youth direc-
tor. We continue to look forward to
your involvement and insight
within our board, and wish you the
best as you move forward with
what God has laid upon your
heart.
Remember VBS will be held
July 25-29, 6:00-8:00 pm.
Prayerfully Submitted,
Dawn Pence

Renovation Summary, 1/1/2007 to 4/30/2010
The Love of a Family: Forever, For Always. Family is often thought of as
the most precious gift given to us
by God. However, the thought of
family is not always one which
brings feelings of joy, fulfillment or
even love. June is recognized as
National Family Month to bring
families together. This recognition
was created to raise awareness and
emphasize the importance of fam-
ily – kids, mothers, fathers, rela-
tives and caregivers – and to en-
courage supporting one another.
Lutheran Services in Iowa
(LSI) seeks to build and expand
healthy relationships to Iowa’s
families through our Family-
Centered services. LSI under-
stands that all families experience
crises, and our programs help fami-
lies work through these times and
use the experiences to learn and
grow. Through education and crisis
management, our staff helps build
stronger families across Iowa. The
help of congregations like yours
plays a pivotal role in the success
of these family-centered programs.
Your support allows LSI to con-
tinue fostering one of God’s great-
est blessings – family.
For more information on ways
LSI provides hope to Iowa’s most
vulnerable populations, visit
www.lsiowa.org.
