    BIBLE AND ARCHAEOLOGY:

THE TIME OF DAVID AND SOLOMON A Special Presentation by Dr. Gabi Barkay

Monday, May 22nd at 7pm Covenant Presbyterian Church, Butler

Dr. Gabi Barkay is an Israeli Archeologist. He has been the director of the Israel Excavation Society Sifting Project since 2004, sifting soil from the Temple Mount area.

Dr. Barkay's most famous discoveries are two small silver scroll amulets containing the priestly benediction from the Book of Numbers, which he discovered in 1979 at Ketef Hinnom. These amulets contain the oldest surviving biblically-related inscription discovered to date, dating back to 600 BC. He also excavated the Iron Age tombs on the grounds of the École Biblique in the early 1970s.

Dr. Barkay is coming to Bulter on May 22nd to speak on the topic of the Bible and archeology in regards to the time of David and Solomon. In the 1970’s the historicity of the biblical account was challenged and the very existence of David and Solomon was questioned. Dr. Barkay will speak to the topic of how archeological data and extra-biblical sources have since proved the opposite.

YOU are invited to this special presentation. This is event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. A free will offering will be received to help cover Dr. Barkay’s travel expenses.

To find out more about Dr. Barkay check out his website at www.gabrielbarkay.com.

    BAKING FOR MEALS ON WHEELS

May is Grace’s month to bake for Meals on Wheels. Sunday, May 21st will be our collection day of baked goods and they can be left in the church kitchen. Baked goods should be wrapped and freezer-ready. Please, no nuts and no icing on your baked goods. If you would like to help deliver baked goods to Meals on Wheels, please meet Mary K. Davis at the church at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 22.

In addition to or instead of baking, you can also contribute financially either by dropping your loose change in our coin jar collection in May, or designate a contribution in an offering envelope marked “Meals on Wheels’.

CALLING ALL PIE BAKERS! As you may know, the people of Grace have two luncheons each month: Marty’s Lunch Break and Grace’s Soup and Sandwich Luncheon on the last Thursday of each month, in which the proceeds are used to provide funds for services to the church. If you are able to provide a pie for either of these luncheons and would like to be put on a call list, please contact Vicky Gould at 724-679-2465 to let her know what and/or how many pies you can provide. Your help is GREATLY appreciated and we thank you!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A VOTING

MEMBER AT SYNOD ASSEMBLY? The 2017 Southwestern PA Synod Assembly is June 15 -17th at California University of Pennsylvania. This year’s theme is “We are Stewards of the Gospel.” Each year, Grace is able to send three voting members to Synod Assembly (one male, one female, one youth). If you are interested in getting an up close look at how our Synod makes decisions about the regional church, see Pastor Tara.

COVENANT FOOD CUPBOARD On Thursday, May 25th, members of Grace @ Calvary will gather at Covenant Food Cupboard at Covenant United Presbyterian Church to help distribute food. If you would like to help with this ministry, please join us at 8:45 AM at Covenant. If you would like to donate to the food bank, suggested items for donation for May and June are:

“BRIDGING COMMUNITY” Glade Run Lutheran Services Capital

    Campaign

Over 160 years have passed since William Passavant founded the Orphan’s Home and Farm School in Zelienople. Since that humble beginning, thousands of young people have been impacted though this ministry. Renamed Glade Run Lutheran Services in 1998, this organization has continuously served the needy, troubled, and disenfranchised children of western Pennsylvania.

Today, Glade Run serves more than 4,000 children and families annually through mental health, educational, cultural, and autism offerings in school and community campus based locations throughout the region.

Through the years, buildings and programs offered have changed, but

Glade Run has remained committed to offering faithful Christian care and treatment programs with a Christ-centered mission of faith and service.

Over the last several years the agency has been planning and conducting a $2.5million capital campaign to expand and enhance their facilities and services they provide. Last year, Grace @ Calvary was approached and asked to participate in this campaign. We have answered the call!

As a congregation, we have made a commitment to participate in this campaign and seek to raise $3,000 to be given towards their goal! Throughout the month of May we will be sharing the details of this campaign and invite you to participate. Be on the lookout for information and opportunity this month!

CLOTHED WITH GRACE An update and a call to service for Grace’s Closet

Grace’s Closet, our clothing ministry, was established in 2011 and since that time has freely given out tons of clothing to people in need. It is our ministry which takes seriously the biblical command to clothe the naked (Matthew 25) and we are honored to be a part of God’s very tangible mission to serve people in need in the city of Butler in the name of Jesus.

As happens over the course of a ministry, the people who were once leading a ministry discern that it is time for them to step back from their position of leadership to tend to other areas of their life. To that end, Julie Schmeider, who has so graciously and faithfully overseen the Closet for the past few years, will be stepping out of her position of leadership at Grace’s Closet. We

extend our heartfelt gratitude to Julie for her care for the most vulnerable among us and for her faithful and joyful service at the Closet as she shares of her many talents and her time in this position.

To that end, the Closet is looking for new leadership to help to organize the closet and be a point of contact person for any questions about donations or needs.

In addition to being a point of contact, the Chairperson of Grace’s Closet helps to set the Closet distribution schedule and keeps in contact with the faithful volunteers who keep the Closet up and running. The Chairperson also helps to coordinate the flow of donations to the Closet and helps on distribution days. According to Julie, the Chairperson may spend about 6-7 hours per months with this ministry, much of it on a flexible schedule.

Please prayerfully consider if you are being invited to serve as the Chairperson of Grace’s Closet or if you know someone who may be called to service in this particular way. If you have any questions or thoughts on this, please see Pastor Tara or Julie Schmeider.

    CALLED TO SERVE?

    THIS MONTH’S OPPORTUNITIES…

1.GARDENS OF GRACE...Spring is upon us and summer is fast approaching. That means that the Gardens of Grace are alive with flowers...and weeds. If you are available to help beautify the Gardens of Grace through pulling weeds and marinating the gardens, please see Pastor Tara or Donna Graham. This is a great opportunity to serve that can be done any time of the day...or night.

2.TENDING TO TOYS...Grace has two main play rooms for young children and our toys are in need of some TLC. They need cleaned and sanitized, as well as sorted to remove outdated and broken items. This can be done on your schedule and is a great way to serve if you have a love for children and like to work behind the scenes. If you are interested in this option, see Pastor Tara.

3.LIFE BUTLER COUNTY...Come out on the Monday and Tuesday following the Third Sunday of the month (May 22nd and 23rd) at 11am to worship and praise God with the day participants of LIFE Butler. The folks at LIFE love to have visitors and enjoy a time of Worship and Holy Communion. If you would like to be a part of this, see Pastor Tara.

One of the ways we show and share the love of Jesus Christ to and in our world is to engage in opportunities for Christian service. Not only does our service benefit the receiver, it also encourages each one of us to grow and mature in our Christian faith. In Christian service, we learn about what it means to follow the example of Jesus Christ, as we share of our selves for the good of the world.

To that end, we will be experimenting in this space of the newsletter for the next six months. We will be sharing current

requests for opportunities of service, as related to the ministries of Grace @ Calvary. Please take a look and prayerfully consider if you are being called to serve in a particular way in this month. Pastor Tara is always willing to engage with you in your discernment process through prayer and holy conversation.

If you have a ministry opportunity you would like to share, please let Pastor Tara know, so that it can be included in an upcoming newsletter.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you

also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples,

if you have love for one another. (John 13)

    HELP SUPPORT MARTY’S MARCHERS

A Relay For Life Team to support the

American Cancer Society Marty’s Marchers is gearing up for Relay Day at the Butler Farm Show Grounds on July 15th at 10:00 AM until July 16th at 10:00 AM. There will be numerous activities throughout the 24-hour event, including a cornhole tournament run by our team. Pastor Tara will lead the church service at 7:30 PM Saturday, just after the Survivors’ Dinner and lap. If you are a survivor or know one, please see Cheryl O’Day to sign up for the dinner. We would love to serve you dinner and rejoice that you are a survivor of this dreaded cancer. A survivor is one day from diagnosis to 100 years!

Also, this year we would like to have walkers on the track as much as possible. If you are interested in walking for 1/2 hour or more, see Cheryl O’Day to sign up for your preferred time slot.

Before the Relay in July, we are having a bake sale at Boscov’s on May 13th from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Come out and get some homemade goodies for Mother’s Day. If you are willing to bake, please have baked goods to the church on Friday, May 12th by 7:00 PM or you can bring them to Boscov’s on Saturday. The bake sale table will be located just outside Boscov’s in the mall.

The American Cancer Society is running a 50/50 raffle to be drawn at 10:00 AM on July 16th during the Relay. Ticket’s are $5 each. Marty’s Marchers has a few tickets to sell and if you would like one, please contact Cheryl O’Day.

We hope to see YOU on Relay Day. It is a great day of fellowship in support of all those dealing with cancer.

Dedicate a Luminary Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome it. When you attend a Relay event, you’ll see the Luminarias decorated with names and sometimes messages to the people they’re dedicated to.

After dark, Relay participants share an emotional moment when each Luminaria is lit in remembrance of a life touched by cancer. Together, we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones they’re dedicated to. When you make a donation for a Luminaria it helps fund the American Cancer Society’s mission to help save lives. For more information on how to sponsor a luminary, talk to Cheryl O’Day.

    Written by Chuck McMichael

I was reminded recently of the old CBS comedy “Green Acres,” where long-suffering big city attorney Oliver Wendell Douglas and his wife Lisa tried to become farmers and fit in among rural folk. One of the major irritations was the barely-functioning Hooterville Phone Company. The sign on its headquarters read “ervice is ur mott.” The natives thought it was Latin. Only Mr. Douglas could see that the sign should have read “Service is our motto,” but some of the letters had fallen off.

I bring this up because mottos, like mission statements, need looking after, or else they fade into the weeds. Once that happens, they lose their power to inspire us.

There’s a mission statement printed on the cover of this newsletter. Do you know

what it says? Go ahead, take a minute and look it up. Do you agree with it? Can you figure out what it is trying to say?

God doesn’t change. Human nature remains pretty constant. But the environment we live in and the situations we face change over time. Different problems increase in prominence. The membership of the congregation changes, which means there are changes to the list of talents and skills we as a group possess. It is a health thing to stop occasionally and ponder whether our mission needs to adjust to meet changing circumstances.

I ask you to prayerfully consider what you think Grace @ Calvary should be doing, both inside for the congregation and outside for the city and world we find ourselves in. Who should we tell people we are? Church Council will be wrestling with this question. They will look to you to help them answer it. You are on notice.

CREATING A LEGACY PLAN Greetings Friends of Grace,

Many of you may have noticed that

I am not able to be present with

you many Sundays. My role with

    the ELCA Foundation has me

    traveling and visiting congregations

    throughout western Pennsylvania

    and West Virginia.

Serving as a Regional Gift Planner, I

    meet with wonderful people to

    discuss their intentions for when

their time on this earth is

    complete. During these meetings,

we discuss what they would like to

leave behind as an inheritance for

their loved ones. In addition, we

    have a conversation about the

    ministries and charities that mean

the most to them. From this

    conversation, we put together a

“Legacy Plan” that helps them to

see how their assets would be

    distributed to follow their heartfelt

    intentions.

While I may not be in service every

week, know that I am available to

you as you are considering your

    legacy plans. This is a

    completely free

    ministry that is offered

    by the church for your

    benefit.

    If you are considering

    your estate plans and

the legacy you want to leave (or

your plan could benefit from a

    review or update), please don’t

hesitate to call me or catch me the

next time I am in church.

I look forward to sitting down with

you as we discuss the wonderful

legacy you want to leave behind

for our church, your family, and

the charities that mean the most to

    you.

    In His Service,
