All over the world, Christians will be remembering the crucifixion of Jesus, and celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. At sunrise on Easter Sunday morning, believers everywhere will be singing “He Arose” and “He Lives.” Christians will be declaring that Jesus Christ got up from the grave with all power in His hands. “Isn’t that Good News?” When was the last time you shared this Good News with anyone? There is a song that has the line in it, “Said I wasn’t gonna tell nobody, but I couldn’t keep it to myself.” When was the last time you had some news you just couldn’t keep to yourself, you couldn’t wait to tell somebody? We don’t seem to have a problem with talking about the latest headlines in the news; which most of the time is not good news. In fact we spend a good amount of time talking with friends, co-workers, and family members about our problems and hardships. Maybe the next time a friend, co-worker or family member wants to share with you their trials and tribulations, you could take this opportunity to tell them, “I’ve got Good News!” Despite the fact that our lives are often bombarded with problems and hardships, there is always Good News for the believer. Resurrection Sunday is a reminder to every believer that we possess resurrection power. And we need to let others know that no matter

what happens in life or whatever knocks us off our feet, we have the power to get up again. We have resurrection power on the inside. “Isn’t that Good News?” There’s even more Good News in the Word of God. The Word of God tells us that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains (Matthew 17:20). It tells us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). It tells us that we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). The Bible tells us that with God all things are possible (Mark 10:27). The Bible is full of Good News. The best news of all is that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8) and God loved us so much that He gave His only son as a sacrifice for us (John 3:16). And if that isn’t enough how about this, if we believe that Jesus died on the cross for us and in three days rose from the grave early Resurrection Sunday, then we will have eternal life (Romans 10:9). Now that’s Good News worth sharing!

Peace and

Blessings. . .

rev. Cleveland t.a.Mason, II

G&G: Pastor Mason welcome to Grace & Glory Magazine. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to talk with you, particularly for the occasion of your 22th Pastoral Anniversary. I am sure this is an exciting time for you and I always like to break the ice with a few of my favorite questions. First how would you describe yourself in three words and what is one thing that most people would be surprised to know about you?PM: Prayerful, Purposed, and Persistent. Most people might be surprised to know I have an earned black belt in the martial arts and was a trained combat technician.

G&G: Pastor Mason most pastors have shared with me that ‘preaching the gospel’ was not what they initially had planned to do with their lives. Was it the same for you, did you have other plans for your life before your call to ministry?PM: I’ve always possessed a deep mystical admiration for preachers. As a young boy, I always thought that preachers were God’s best people on the earth. It is partly the reason I did not readily accept my calling to ministry. I knew some of my faults and flaws and could not fathom that God would choose someone as faulty as I to preach His Gospel. I thought I was doing well enough as a Christian lay speaker sharing my testimony and seeking to encourage other youth to passionately seek and serve God. Since the age of eight I had unusual opportunities offered by pastors and churches around the nation. Local pastors, including: Dr. James L. Ball, Timothy Baptist Church; Dr. William W. Payne, Wayland Baptist Church; Dr. Lawyer Swinson, New Metropolitan Baptist Church; Dr. Marcus G. Woods, Providence Baptist Church; Dr. A. J. Payne, Enon Baptist Church; Dr. George Baynard, Shiloh Christian Community Church and so many other pastors gave me

opportunities to address their young people on Children’s Day, Youth Day or Children’s Church (even before I began officially preaching the Gospel). I tried to do everything but be a preacher and I was very

successful at doing other things until God pursued me during my teenaged years. At age seventeen, after a number of consultations with my pastor, Dr. Harold A. Carter, Sr., I surrendered to the Call of God, preached my initial sermon Sunday, February 25, 1973 and began my journey as a Christian evangelist.

G&G: Pastor Mason when did you realize the call on your life to preach the gospel? Was it a ‘lightning and thunder’ experience? Was it a difficult call to accept?PM: At age sixteen, I began having the most intense wrestling with God about my worth and purpose in life. In the hushed background of my life were men who sought to abuse me and social rejection was very hard for me. Suicidal thoughts had a great grip on me then but I was a coward. I believed I was unwanted, unloved and God and the Bible became my refuge. The pain in my life made me cry out to God and He provided me a purpose driven life anchored in the provisional power and care of the Holy Spirit, Accepting God’s call rescued me and delivered me from the power of the adversary but aimed my life toward the purposes of God. God used Ezekiel 30:1- 2, “The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Howl ye, Woe worth the day!” to address me in His call. I daily seek to answer Him faithfully.

G&G: Pastor Mason what do you remember about your first sermon? What was the title/message?PM: My message was “Be of Good Cheer: God Will Take Care of You” Acts 23:11. The message was to encourage us to trust God to take care of us. This message was born out of my hospital experience. Sunday November 19, 1972, just

before Thanksgiving, Bishop Walter Scott Thomas and I gave our public statements to the church announcing our call to ministry. That same week I was hit by a drunk driver as I was crossing the street at Lafayette and Bentalou going to the store. I was in the hospital from November until January 19, 1973 and it was there God gave me the message I would preach Sunday, February 25, 1973.I remember being nervous but confident that the Lord was with me. He did show up and blessed the preaching moment. New Shiloh has always been a gracious house of God but I shall always remember the words of two supporters: Lady Patricia Thomas who said, “He was always a little strange, staying to himself but now I understand” and Bishop Stanley M. Butler who said, “Keep the fire!” G&G: Let’s shift a little and talk about your 22nd Pastoral Celebration at the Perkins Square Baptist Church. How would you describe these last 22 years as their Pastor? PM: These last 22 years have been times of great challenge and great change. Over the years, I feel that God has drawn us closer together toward the purposes of God. We have a pioneering spirit willing to be on the cutting edge of ministry and do some things others may not have tried to do for the Kingdom. We are about preaching, teaching and healing. Our motto is, “Developing Disciplined Disciples.” We have been leading our people to give flesh to the Kingdom of God. I am honored to be serving a great people who more and more are modeling the power of team leadership in submission to the purposes of God.

G&G: Pastor Mason, why do you think your ministerial career has lasted so long? Is there a secret to longevity in ministry?PM: I believe that there are a number of factors that have led to the longevity of the ministry of Christ working through me:

1. I have had great models to observe. I have sought others who have demonstrated capabilities toward success and/or strength to get the best out of failure: to observe, question and learn from them what I could do.

2. I have had great mentors. Dr. Harold A. Carter, Sr., Dr. Alfred C. D. Vaughn, Bishop Thomas Garrott Benjamin, Jr.,

Pastor Darrell and Brenda Greene, Bishop Stanley M. Butler, Pastor Thomas Edison Moore and there have been some special moments with so many others with whom I maintain contact; some very well-known and some rather obscure.

3. I was taught to pray, pray, pray but listen most for the voice of God and trust His leading. If God does not keep us we cannot be kept. Simple prayer and simple faith!

4. Trusting God to bring alongside persons He gifts to you to aid you in ministry. Bishop Clifford Johnson taught me that God will bring people, as gifts to the

preacher, to aid you in the work you are to do. I now know that everybody is not for me but I prayerfully receive those whom the Lord sends. God does not send us trouble makers.

G&G: Pastor Mason, what has been your passion in this ministry and what has been your vision for Perkins Square over the last 22 years?PM: Our Mission & Vision Commitment:

The Biblical CommissionMatthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20; Acts 1:8

The MissionOur mission is to present to the world in the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ – as Savior and Lord. That people might be persuaded to receive Him as redeemer, deliverer and healer through our worship, witness and work.

The purpose of Perkins Square Baptist Church and its ministries is to develop spiritual leaders and to mobilize the Christian community to fulfill the great commission of Jesus Christ, by reaching out to people of every race, culture, sex and nation throughout the world with the life-changing power of the gospel of the Kingdom of God in the power of the Holy Spirit. We will exalt the glory of the Kingdom of God and His manifested Presence; bringing the reality of His peace, purpose, power, provision and healing for humanity.

The VisionIt is our objective to fulfill our mission by providing dynamic worship in an atmosphere where the Holy Spirit has dominion. Through biblical teaching and preaching we will encourage submission to Christian disciplines and practice of the Faith.

Through our daily commitment as participants modeling, Continued on page 10

praying, teaching, preaching and witnessing this sacred message to our world, we strive for the complete transformation of peoples’ lives with the support of holistic ministries of deliverance from physical and spiritual perils. We shall strive with relentless corporate effort to develop our spiritual gifts and resources to maximize our potential and proficiency to serve God’s Kingdom and humanity, now. This is our priority! We will do this with all our heart, until Jesus comes!

G&G: Pastor Mason would you say your union with the Perkins Square Baptist Church as Pastor and People has been one of solidarity or is it still a work in progress? PM: I would say we are still building solidarity but we are a lot closer than we used to be.

G&G: Pastor Mason what have been the most difficult struggles you faced as pastor of Perkins Square? What about the most rewarding experiences as pastor of Perkins Square?PM: One of the most difficult struggles is finding persons who will be committed leaders in the church today. Some persons want the position but will not do the ongoing training or fully commit to the responsibilities required. Some lack the intention and desire for holy pursuits. Secondly, it is difficult to get people to adopt a biblical world view that will encourage their follow through in making their life’s decisions biblically. Thirdly, compelling people to catch the vision God gives and support it faithfully; to see the vision come to pass. Finally, although not the final issue, developing a loving non-judgmental congregation, that manifests fully heaven on earth as God’s intentional witness to the world and work in the human family.

G&G: Pastor Mason, with a church on practically every corner in Baltimore City, what would make someone want to visit the Perkins Square Baptist Church and ultimately plant their feet there?PM: We are truly, what Keith Miller described in his book, The Becomers; we are not perfect people but we are being

perfected; from preachers to members. Perkins Square is a place where imperfect people can come and find fellow strugglers becoming better to serve the Kingdom of God.

G&G: Pastor Mason, after 22 years as Pastor of the Perkins Square Baptist Church, what would you say you know for sure?PM: I do know this: 2 Corinthians 4 (KJV), 7 But we have

this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

G&G: Would you share with us what is planned for this 22nd Pastoral Celebration?PM: Planning for this year is a really

simple celebration. Sunday, April 6, at 3:30 PM will be a celebration service with a multitude of invited guests and members sharing their moments of being blessed by the ministry. Saturday, April 26 members are planning a weekend celebration to surprise me; so I do not have details, they just said come prepared to have fun. Sunday, April 27 at 10:30 AM Bishop Kevin V. Greshem, Sr., Greater St. John Baptist Church will be preaching and 3:30 PM Dr. Frank M. Reid III and the Bethel AME Church will conclude our celebration.

G&G: Pastor Mason after 22 plus years in ministry no doubt you have plenty of wisdom to share. Do you see yourself as a role model for young aspiring ministers? What advice would you give to those wanting to go into ministry?

PM: All ministers are role models and I seek to model the devotion and discipline that rightly goes along with this profession and calling. Ministry takes real preparation to do it right and to do it well. My advice to all aspirants for ministry is to do the work of preparation and it will help you to last. Most seminaries are filled with women preparing for ministry. Not many men feel they need to be trained and educated for ministry. Things have changed drastically today and evolution is still underway for the Church in America. There is more to know and more to do. There are ministry technicalities that cannot be ignored. Legal issues, social issues and the exploding business issues must go along with the genuine development of prophetic biblical preaching and teaching that is accurate in interpretation and exciting in homiletical presentation.

G&G: Speaking of young preachers, so many things are done differently than when you first started. There is Facebook, Twitter, texting, streaming services, etc., what are your thoughts on technology and the church?PM: You are so right; things are changing for the Church and ministers. After 43 years in ministry and two pastorates comprising 28 years I have seen many things come and go. In fact, I just completed a course at the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.’s Superintendents Conference in Nashville, Tennessee; where we were examining the multitude of uses technologies can serve in the ministries of the church. I believe that technology is for the church to reach the world with the gospel message. We must train and develop systems and creatively employ today’s technologies to get our message to people around the world; starting here at home.

G&G: In today’s society it has been said that technology has had a profound effect on the church. A person can go to church without ever having to leave their home. Do you believe that the ‘church’ as a meeting place for worshipers is in any danger of losing its relevance?

PM: There are some real challenges coming to the church but people will always need the tangible anointing of God as He functions through human vessels: laying hands on the sick, anointing with oil, praying in the spirit and experiencing an atmosphere of praise and worship. I believe we will always have need for a relevant church

doing ministries that matter.

G&G: Finally, Pastor Mason what’s next for you and the Perkins Square Baptist Church? What do you have planned for the church to do in the future to continue to lead its community and invest in it?PM: There are a number things ahead of us. We are doing all we can to be the kind of church that ministers to the whole person. We have instituted a Kickboxing fitness class, Zumba fitness, substance abuse ministry and a kids basketball camp. We are expanding opportunities for Christian education and life skills training. We are looking at expanding our feeding ministries and bringing together

an umbrella of community services to enhance the lives of people in our community. We are seeking to build a multi-purpose facility providing multi-level parking and space for a number of community based services we will offer and a wellness center. Also, I am seeking to be elected to serve our state convention, the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Maryland and its Auxiliaries, Inc. as its next President. The election will take place during our annual session the

third week in May 2014. This place of service will afford me the opportunity to help build the Baptist witness across the State of Maryland. We will move throughout the state to bring our people together so that we might

apply our collective strength to the issues affecting our people. Together we can build a strong community that effectively advocates for voiceless victims.

G&G: Pastor Mason, thank you for sharing with us and we pray that the Lord will continue to bless you and the Perkins Square Baptist Church family. Congratulations as you celebrate 22 years as Pastor and people.

Reverend Dr. Cleveland Taft Andre Mason, 2nd is Overseer and Senior Pastor of the historic Perkins Square Baptist Church & Ministries in Baltimore, MD. He was born to the marital union of Cleveland and Dorothy (Briscoe) Mason in Baltimore, MD on October 4, 1955. He was reared in a Christian home under the guidance of his grandmother, Julia Ruffin Holmes and his father, both are now deceased. He was educated in Baltimore City Public Schools, graduating from the Walbrook Senior High School in June 1974. Dr. Mason continued his education at Towson State University, where he earned degrees in Mass Communications and Media. October 12, 2000 he received the Doctorate of Divinity degree from Eastern Theological Seminary, Lynchburg, VA. In December 2006, Dr. Mason was honored with a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Harold A.

Carter Determined Biblical Theological Institute of Baltimore, MD. Dr. Mason was employed until December 31, 1991, by the federal government and was assigned to the Department of Health and Human Services and later, the Department of the Treasury. While serving as a federal employee, he received numerous awards for outstanding service to the United States Government and other professional achievement awards. He has served the religious community as a lay-speaker since the age of 8 and was licensed to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ at age 17. Under the mentoring of Dr. Harold A. Carter, Sr. he was always in great demand and preached and taught widely throughout the United States. So great was the demand for this gifted communicator that he had to train others to assume his work as chief technical engineer for the media ministry of New Shiloh Baptist Church. Dr. Mason was licensed on Sunday, February 25, 1973 and ordained on February 28, 1986; under the determined and challenging ministry of Dr. Harold A. Carter, Sr. and the New Shiloh Baptist Church of Baltimore. December 17, 1985, Dr. Mason was elected to serve as the second pastor of the Mount Enon Missionary Baptist Church in Southeast Washington, DC. This young energetic church, under his leadership, became a triumphant pioneer in evangelism. He developed outdoor witnessing campaigns and broadcasted, “Word of Life,” a weekly telecast serving the Washington community; which placed this church on the cutting edge of ministry. He served Mount Enon Missionary Baptist Church until December 31, 1991 On September 11, 1991, the Perkins Square Baptist Church of Baltimore, MD elected and extended the “call” to its pastorate to Dr. Mason. This maverick minister, with his dynamic and provocative style of teach-preaching, has brought a refreshing sense of revival to the church’s worship, work and witness. Dr. Mason tries to make a difference in the community. The church is in partnership with the James Mosher Elementary School, Morgan State University and Coppin State University. He volunteers as a male mentor and counselor. The church provides

funding and other resources for some of the unmet needs of the schools. A certified counselor through the American Association of Christian Counselors with Dr. Gary Collins and the American Academy of Bereavement Facilitators, Pastor Mason seeks to provide his congregation and community with counseling support services. Since his arrival at Perkins Square, many new ministries have been birthed. Among them are: the Ministry of Christian Education & Programs;

Power for Living Bible Classes and Thursday Noonday Bible Class; The Lord’s Kitchen (a weekly ministry of sermon and soul food served to the hungry in the community); the Tribe of Judah Dance Ministry; Healing and Deliverance Services (special services where the congregation gathers in an atmosphere of praise and worship to lay hands on and pray for the sick and oppressed); Intercessory Prayer Ministry, Community Prayer

Public Safety Town Hall Tour: Engaging Baltimore’s Communities

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake publishes her “Walking in the Light” column each month in Grace and Glory Magazine.

Walking in the Lightby Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

Public safety is an issue that is on the minds of citizens, businesses, communities, City offi cials—and it is on my mind every hour of every day.

While we have made major gains in our eff orts to make Baltimore a safer city (statistics show that crime has decreased in a number major categories, including assault, robbery, rape, and even overall violent crime), we need to do better. Our citizens deserve better.

The cornerstone of our crime fi ghting strategy is focusing on targeting violent repeat off enders. We are working to make our police force more nimble and technologically savvy so that we can be proactive and remove these criminals from the streets before they commit violent crimes.

To enhance our focus on violent repeat off enders, we are implementing a program that has seen success in several other cities: Operation Ceasefi re. This program has shown great promise in reducing homicides in several other big cities. It will be a collaborative eff ort across several City agencies, as well as law enforcement partners at all levels of government. Operation Ceasefi re will continue our all-hands-on-deck approach to fi ghting crime, and I am convinced that it will complement our eff orts to make our city safer.

The program will work directly with community members and law enforcement agencies to make clear that the violence taking place in our communities must end now; that there will be severe and swift consequences for any future acts of violence; and that if you are genuinely sincere about wanting to change your life, we are here with the resources and support to assist you in that endeavor.

It is important that we continue to work to strengthen the partnership between the police and our communities. Last year we saw a 300% increase in residents calling in to report tips to the police. We need to continue working

together to reduce violence in our communities. I would like to urge all of Baltimore’s residents to engage, speak up, and work with us to reduce violence.

To that end, my administration has also increased support for Crime Stoppers, a central tip line for residents to provide information that could help to solve a crime or prevent one from taking place. If you or someone you know has any information that could help, please call Crime Stoppers at 866-7-LOCKUP.

In March, I joined with Police Commissioner Batts, leaders from the Western Police District, and members of the community at Frederick Douglass High School to hold the fi rst in a series of Public Safety Forums. In the coming weeks, we will be visiting with residents in each of the nine police districts to explain our public safety strategy, to discuss crime reduction, and to aff ord residents the opportunity to meet with me, the police commissioner, and other members of the administration to inquire about current initiatives and ways they can volunteer to help.

Better Choices, Better Results

by Governor Martin O’Malley

Our forests, farms, parks and gardens are suddenly abuzz with life, the air has turned earthy and fragrant. As the icy remnants of the long winter melt into memory, and the roar of early spring reawakens the natural world, we should take a moment to reflect on the bounty we share as Marylanders and Americans.

It’s no accident that this is the month we observe Earth Day across the country – a perfect time to remember how our nation became one of the most prosperous in the history of the world. Our prosperity grew out of the land’s rich soil and nourishing harvests. We thrived and spread across open spaces and diverse ecosystems with healthy air to breathe and clean water to drink.

But we understand today, better than at any other time in our history, that the land is not infinite, and that careless consumption can do real and irreversible harm. We know today that the prosperity of our children and grandchildren will depend on our responsible use of what we have been given. Indeed, the stewardship of our great state, from the Chesapeake Bay to the Mountains of Western Maryland is a solemn and sacred duty.

I’m pleased to report, though, that our record is strong. In Maryland, we have done more than any other state in the region over the last seven years to address the two fastest growing sources of pollution in the Chesapeake Bay – urban stormwater and septic pollution. We have upgraded wastewater treatment plants, driven down the over-application of fertilizers, planted hundreds of thousands of acres of cover-crops to limit runoff, and expanded stream buffers near farms. We’ve taken aim at greenhouse gas

emissions by planting thousands of trees, reducing harmful emissions from power plants and growing our renewable energy portfolio. We’re driving offshore wind and renewable energy projects forward with ambitious incentives, and we’re guarding forests and farms against unsustainable sprawl like never before.

These efforts are restoring and sustaining a healthier Maryland, and they come with the added benefit of supporting and creating thousands of jobs. But this is only the first step. We have much more work to do in the region, more work to do as a nation, and more work to do on the international stage as leaders in the preservation of our planet.

This work is urgent, and every citizen, young and old can contribute. So this spring, let us rededicate ourselves to the work of protecting the beauty and bounty that surround us.

Accepted?Have You Been

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” (Romans 15:7)

More than 22 million graduating high school seniors across this country will choose to attend colleges and universities in the fall.1 A good number of these same teenagers, after applying to the schools of their choice, will wait anxiously for a response. They most likely have already spent the past few months waiting to see if they’ve been accepted. The college acceptance notification can come by way of a personal letter or an electronic message. I recall that the college acceptance letter was evidence that I had at least met the minimum requirements to enter a particular institution of higher learning. It was also an indication of what I should expect in the years to come, namely putting in plenty of hard work and making a personal commitment to succeed.

Aside from college, I believe each of us would agree that it’s also important to be accepted by those we encounter at work, in our homes, as part of our communities, and even in the places where we worship. The Holy Scriptures reminds us that we should be willing to accept one another as Christ accepted us. This passage suggests that the ultimate goal of our accepting each other is to bring praise to God. If you have ever been on the receiving end of a compliment, then you are a witness that words and actions have a way of lifting our spirits. I recall the value of that kind of encouragement growing up as the youngest of four children. It was important to be accepted in our home, first by my

parents, other family members, and then children who were a part of our community. This type of validation extended to school as well. I remember the sense of acceptance I experienced when I earned a position on one of our sports teams.

But aside from what others think about us, we must be willing to develop a sense of self-acceptance. A Psychology Today columnist says research has demonstrated that before the age of eight, we lack the ability to formulate a clear, separate sense of self – that is, other than that which has been transmitted to us by our caretakers.2 I believe that self-acceptance can also lead to self-improvement. As we improve and experience acceptance, we should also become more committed to helping others see themselves as Christ sees them. As Christians, we are guilty of failing to accept others based on their race, gender or socio-economic status. This is the opposite of what Jesus demonstrated during his earthly ministry. There are a number of passages in the Bible where he accepted those who were shunned by society. Jesus made this offer to those who were labeled as unacceptable in Matthew 11:28-30. These are his recorded words. 28 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”3 Have you been accepted? It’s a question not only worth asking, but living.

single life

Dr. MoniqueFlemings

Monique Flemings Ministries www.moniqueflemingsministries.com

Chicago, Illinois

Living in the Midwest where the winters are long and cold cultivates an appreciation for the season of spring where all the

madness of winter ceases. You grow to appreciate the blooming tulips, the grass sprouting and the melodious sound of birds singing

all welcoming the season of spring. It is also the time you pack away the heavy winter sweaters, and clothing that was necessary for survival in

the winter season. Hats, gloves, and boots make their way into storage away from your sight until next year. As you place these items away, you

reach and pull items you may have packed away from last spring with the hopes that these items will fit into this new season of spring. Some of us do a “spring cleaning” of our homes with a deep and intense

cleaning of dust as we prepare for the new season of spring. We open the windows allowing fresh air into a home that was closed up during the

winter and we embrace all the ‘newness” that spring will bring.Just as we engage in spring cleansing in the natural, as single Christians, spring is a great time

to “spring clean” spiritually and prepare ourselves for new relationships, new opportunities and anything new that God desires to bring our way. Sometimes we don’t realize the weights and heavy items that we are carrying around. Some items we collected during the winter season and they no longer have a function for the new season of our life. Heaviness from a marriage that did not turn out as we expected and we find ourselves single…again. Not really single in our emotions and thoughts, since we have just spent the

last years of our lives “becoming one” with someone, building a life as a couple and now….single….again. The heaviness of adjusting our lives from being a couple to being a single person

may have caused us to cover our emotions up and protect our hearts from any more injury and pain.Perhaps it’s the heaviness of yet another relationship gone sour. Surely this was “THE ONE”. The person of your dream, but before your eyes “THE ONE” turned into a dud. The layers of heavy items cover up the areas of our lives that need protection form the blustery elements of dating as a Christian. Just as spring comes in the natural, spring in our spiritual lives prepare us for the new things that God is doing in our lives. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19 God is opening doors of new opportunities for you as a single person for growth, development and new relationships. Spring is a season of freshness in and a shedding or placing away the heavy items from the previous season. This is a time to remove old, stagnated relationships that no longer fit this new season of your life. Separate or pack away negative people and dream- killers. Replace them with cheerleaders and people who celebrate the “new” you. Allow new opportunities to bloom for you! Expand and gather in new relationship, allowing some fresh air to blow into your life and into your heart. Take a class….expand your mind. It can be an educational class, health class or a relaxation or hobby, just open your mind to new possibilities. Let’s look at the passage in the Message version for more understanding of how God is doing something new in our lives……

This is what God says, the God who builds a road right through the ocean, who carves a path through pounding waves,The God who summons horses and chariots and armies— they lie down and then can’t get up; they’re snuffed out like so many candles:

“Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history.Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands.

www.gracenglorymagazine.org 27

Singles spring forward and open your hearts and minds to the possibilities that God has for you in 2014. God is doing something new, be alert and present. Remove every weight and old mindsets and SPRING FORWARD !!

pring is in the air! Can you feel it? After the winter we and most of the country just endured, I know I’m not the only one that is eagerly welcoming in the warmer air and longer sunshine in our days. This time of year also usually signals

something else that is very popular in most households across the country, SPRING CLEANING. I can remember as a child as soon as the warmer air was upon us, it was time to begin making some adjustments in our home. We would deep clean areas that we maybe hadn’t paid as much attention to for the past few months. Clothes and shoes that we had outgrown were set aside to be given away so that we could make space for new items.

Now that the warmer and brighter days are upon us, I want to encourage you not only to do a physical cleaning; but to also treat yourself to a spiritual and emotional cleaning. Typically when people spring clean, they are likely to do most, if not all of these things. Let’s take a closer in depth look at each:

CLEAN- Considering this word appears in the term “Spring Clean”, I’m sure it’s safe to say this one is a given. But what does it really mean to clean. By definition it means to refresh or to remove dirt and marks. Can I tell you something? Life is very contaminating. Just living life on a daily basis and interacting with others, it is very easy to unintentionally end up with marks on our hearts and minds. Sometimes in our busyness or need to move through our to-do-lists, we don’t even notice the marks that have appeared. If we pay close attention though, we can feel the marks that have shown up on us in the form of stress, worry, fear, fatigue, frustration, unforgiveness, and depression to name a few. After a while we just assume that we are feeling negative because of the weather. It’s time to let the presence of the Holy Spirit wash us afresh and remove every blemish and stain. Purge

me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow (Psalm 51:7). Make that the cry of your heart and allow the Holy Spirit to remove every blemish and stain from your spirit and your soul.

ORGANIZE- Organizing involves arranging, planning and put-ting things in order. If we can be completely honest with our-

selves, some of the areas that we find we have to clean only became dirty or messy because of a lack of

planning or order. When everything has its own proper place, it is much easier to stay

organized, even with limited time. So it is also with us spiritually and emotionally.

For example when we give prayer and meditation their own place in our daily

lives, we don’t have to constantly figure out when we will “squeeze it in”. We find

that with regular alone time with God we have more peace, joy, clarity and less marks and stains We

are more grateful and better able to enjoy the abundance of blessings around us. All of these positive feelings can

actually give us more energy and help us enjoy our lives more; and all of this just from being organized. Let all things be done decently and in order (I Corinthians 14:40).

DISCARD- Something about a new season automatically causes us to start throwing away old things and making room for new things. We clean out our closets and drawers; perhaps because we are switching out our winter with our spring/sum-mer wardrobe. But how often do we take note of the people, places and things that we have outgrown. In John 15, Jesus talks about pruning; the process of cutting back the excess in order to make room for growth. What things are you holding onto that are taking up the place of the very thing you are praying for? It’s time to ask God for the clarity and the strength to discard some unnecessary things from your life so that you make room for what is truly assigned to you for His purpose.

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? (I Corinthians 6:19) Our bodies are the Holy Spirit’s temple; this includes our spirits, our hearts, and our minds. Just as we can’t allow our homes to get clutter, neither can we allow ourselves to get full of clutter. We need to be clean and free to hear from God and to receive His direc-tion for our daily paths. So let’s get to it ladies. Let the spiritual spring cleaning begin!

There are times when we get off track and begin to doubt our skills and abilities. This can happen to any of us. We can be set to start a new job, begin school, move on our own or preach our initial sermon when we begin to question ourselves. Sometimes we do not feel prepared to make the next move due to our insecurities and believing the issues in our past may disqualify from moving forward. We have rendered the opinions of others more important than our dreams and aspirations. These are thoughts and actions we do not share with others but they often manifest when we are at critical places in our lives. No matter what your future holds,

it is possible to make sure you are not the one who derails it. Building confidence in what God has placed in your heart can be challenging especially when you are faced with obstacles from within and from outside issues. When Samuel told Saul God selected him to be king, Saul was not immediately excited about the obvious promotion. He was in fact in disbelief. Saul replied, “But I’m only from the tribe of Benjamin, the smallest tribe in Israel, and my family is the least important of all the families of that tribe! Why are you talking like this to me?” Saul looked at his family and his future and assumed he could not be the next in line for elevation. Let me remind you that God does not look at our upbringing, credentials, education, or

popularity when we are called to bigger and better things. He looks at our heart. He looks at our character, our purpose and our faithfulness. When you are given an opportunity to fulfill the desires of your heart, do not talk yourself out of pursuing it but work towards the goal with more passion and determination. Do not let fear rule your heart. Get moving in the path where God has ordered your steps. No longer second guess your destiny and begin walking in victory. If God can do it for me, then “why not you”?

The 7-Day Prayer Warrior Experience By Stormie Omartian

Have you ever read a book that made you want to change; to do things differently or to do things better than you are currently doing them. The 7-Day Prayer Warrior Experience by Stormie Omartian did just that for me. It was a reminder of how important it is to put on the armor of God daily. Taken from Ephesians 6, Omartian breaks down each piece of the armor, its importance, and practical ways to use it. At the end of the chapters, she adds a short prayer to pray regarding what you just read, and provides scriptures if you want to study that topic out a little more.

Omartian created a “cheat sheet” for us with The 7-Day Prayer Warrior. Even though it is a short book, it is packed with powerful truths that we have probably heard time and time again; but sometimes you just need a refresher. To give us a visual, Omartian uses a Roman soldier and his armor. She is able, using this reference, to give us something to connect with so that the “Armor of God” is not an abstract idea. She likens the “Breast Plate of Righteousness” to the soldier’s breast plate that protects him from a fatal attack to the heart. She called it a “bullet proof

vest”. Every day is a battle, but if prepared we will win.

One of my favorite lines says this on day two, “This doesn’t mean just know about the truth. It means

know it so that it becomes a part of you and you live it.” What a reminder to live truth, not just know truth.

I would definitely suggest that Omartian’s, The 7-Day Prayer Warrior Experience become a part of your library of reference books. Every so often pick it back up and read it all the way through; if not just skim it, and let the words be a reminder to you about the importance of putting on your armor.

WATER:Sorting Through the Many Types

Confused about the many different kinds of water? This article will summarize the many choices available to you as a consumer.

Purified waterPurified water is usually nothing more than water that is either distilled

or treated to remove impurities (contaminants and minerals). Different treatments are used to produce

purified water, including charcoal filtering, reverse osmosis, and deionization. Dasani®

and Aquafina® bottled water are nothing more than this. The water can come from well,

spring, or the public drinking supply.

Spring waterSpring water comes from underground and naturally flows to the surface of the ground. Spring water is collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation feeding the spring.

Mineral waterMineral water contains not less than 250 parts per million of total dissolved mineral solids, such as calcium and magnesium. The manufacturer cannot add the minerals to the water; the minerals must occur naturally. Mineral water must originate from a protected underground water source.

Sparkling waterSparkling water contains naturally occurring or added carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide produces effervescence and increases mouth feel.

Distilled waterDistilled water is created when water is boiled until vapor is created. The vapor is collected and then cooled until it returns to a liquid state. Distillation removes bacteria, viruses, cysts, heavy metals, and other particulates. To remove all of the bacteria, etc, it is necessary to combine distillation with carbon filtration.

The myth that distilled water leaches minerals from the body is pure fiction. Distilled water will pick up the taste of the plastic that it is stored in. It is best stored in glass bottles. Distilled water is most often used for pharmaceutical purposes.

Seltzer waterClassified as a soft drink, seltzer water is flavorless water with induced carbonation. You can consume it plain or use it as a mixer for alcoholic drinks and soda-fountain confections.

Tonic waterClassified as a soft drink, tonic water is flavored with quinine and infused with carbon dioxide to create effervescence. Quinine is a bitter alkaloid obtained from the cinchona tree, which is native to the Andes Mountains and also grown in Southeast Asia and India.

Flavored waterAdded flavors, extracts, essences, or fruit juice concentrates derived from spice or fruit must comprise less than 1%, by weight, of the final product. No sweeteners or other additives are allowed. Carbon dioxide often is used to create effervescence.

How to Talk to Your Kids About Money(American Banking Association)

How soon is too soon to talk to your kids or grandkids about money? If they are old enough to ask for a toy or a bike, they are old enough to start learning financial lessons that will last a lifetime. The best financial lessons are part of everyday experience. Look for opportunities to talk about money, read books aloud and play games that center around spending money wisely. Be open and honest when you discuss your financial experiences—good or bad. Here are some examples of teachable moments to help you get started:

At the bank When you go to the bank, bring your children with you and show them how transactions work. Get the manager to explain how the bank operates, how money generates interest and how an ATM works. Ask the manager for a tour—be sure to ask to see the vault. At the marketIt’s easy to give clear examples of “needs” and “wants” using different kinds of foods at a grocery store. Milk (for strong bones) is a need; soft drinks are a want. Explain the benefits of comparison shopping, coupons and store brands.Chores and allowancesAssign chores and give them a monetary value. Discuss ways to budget and divide allowances. Encourage children to set a financial goal, such as saving for a bike, and figure out how to achieve it. Paying billsExplain the many ways that bills can be paid: over the phone, paper or by check, electronic check or online check draft. Discuss how each method of bill pay takes money out of your account. Be sure to cover late penalties, emphasizing the importance of paying bills on time.

On paydayDiscuss how your pay is budgeted to pay for housing, food and clothing, and how a portion is saved for future expenses such as college tuition and retirement. Using credit cardsExplain that credit cards are a loan and need to be repaid. Share how each month a credit card statement comes in the mail with a bill. Go over the features of different types of cards, such as ATM, debit and credit cards.Browsing the InternetWhile online, explain to your children how valuable their personal information and privacy is to you, to them and to online predators. Discuss the risks and benefits of sharing certain information. Then, as a family, make a list of rules for keeping personal information safe online.Planning a vacationWhether you are planning an outing to a local amusement park or a once-in-a-lifetime trip, emphasize the value of saving as a family. Set a family savings goal that involves your children. Figure out the cost and discuss ways everyone can help to reach the goal.

to your good healthteen connect

In all of our years we cannot recall a winter that was

brutally cold. This winter was so cold that seeing a 30

degree day was a relief. The first day of spring we still

saw snow on the ground! The reality is that life was still at

work. There were some advancements that had taken place

in the natural, that despite the cold weather, spring was

coming. The snow ALWAYS melts and spring ALWAYS

comes. Just as it is in the natural so it is in the spiritual.

This reminded us not to allow climates to impact our

season. Like the trees around us . . . they had snow on every

branch and were buried in snow but buds were still forming.

It does not make a difference to the planted tree (Psalm 1) all

of the things going on around it. It made no difference that

the winter was extremely cold; the tree understands despite

present conditions spring was coming! (Eccl. 3)

Do not despise the winter season because it allowed for

you to get warm and be intimate with God, it was a time to

rest physically, a time to gain direction for planting, to glean

from past mistakes and to repair and prepare for spring. It was

purpose “FULL”! Know that you have been prepared to handle

anything and look forward to your springing forth. Looking

ahead will help you not to be overwhelmed with the climate

surrounding you.

Khare HawkinsLast month Khare Hawkins released his first single “One Holy” a song of praise, adoration, and worship to God.Khare is no stranger to the Gospel Music Industry. He has recorded two albums with Ricky Dillard & New G, as well as performed with them on BET’s Celebration of Gospel and The Stellar Awards. He’s also shared the stage with such greats as Karen Clark-Sheard, Donald Lawrence, and many others. With Khare being a preacher’s kid (his mom is a Reverend) and his dad a VP at Sony Music, it was practically inevitable for him to pursue a mixture of music and ministry. He is also Assistant Pastor to his grandmother, a church in Baltimore in the Randallstown area. His single “One Holy” was produced by Baltimore’s own Steve McCoy, a song originally done back in the 50’s, but with Steve as the producer and

Khare’s vocal arrangements, Genard Carters vocal producing it has been modernized for today’s music in a great way! The single is currently available at all digital media outlets. In June of 2014, he will be releasing his debut EP titled “Awesome God”, a mixture of contemporary praise and worship, along with some traditional hand clappin’ music.Khare believes in and stands on the Word of God and declares that no matter what has happened in his past, and where this journey takes him in the future, Romans 8:28 will be his mantra, “And we know that all things work together for the good of them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.”

As we celebrate this time of Lent, Holy Week, Palm Sunday, and Resurrection Sunday, we really honor and reverence the ultimate sacrifice that was paid for our lives and liberty; because he died we now live!!! We can now live life in abundance not with just the tangible things but the awesome things money can’t buy joy, peace, life, health, and strength!!! Til next month remember “We are NOTHING without him”.

Gospel Commentator, Edna Tatum passed last month. Nationally known as “The Voice” Tatum was a popular emcee and gospel broadcaster for over 30 years hosting concerts and narrating for gospel legends Rev. James Cleveland, Albertina Walker, Kurt Carr, and Rev. Darryl Coley.“I will always treasure learning and growing in Christ during my time with the great Rev. James Cleveland. Never will I forget performing live narrations for Rev. Cleveland at Carnegie Hall, three McDonald’s Gospel Festivals and continuing to be a guest host each year at the Chicago Gospel Festival, which attracts more than 200,000 people,” recalled Tatum. “Equally memorable is being able to record a CD with the famous Billy Preston. Our song, ‘Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow,’ was a wonderful and unforgettable collaboration,” she said.Tatum’s reputation grew internationally through her Gospel Classic broadcast on KPFK-FM 90.7, which was also streamed live around the world on kpfk.org. Keep the Tatum family and friends in prayer.

word of encouragement

It was the third day and Jesus got up as he has promised. He trusted his Father’s faithfulness and knew that his Father had equipped him with everything he needed to function in the earth realm. What a testimony to see the faithfulness of God. Jesus was born the same way that you and I were born -- with the exception that he was born of a virgin. He grew up in a normal environ-ment and became a carpenter – a humble profession. Here he was the Only Begotten Son of God and he humbled himself to come to earth to die for sins he did not commit. Even though his profession was that of a carpenter, when he started his ministry there is no recorded evidence of him working a secular job? In fact in the four Gospels, he is said to have been in the temple teaching and preaching. When he was out and about, he was laying hands on the sick, raising the dead, opening blinded eyes and he even turned water into wine. In other words, he knew that he was equipped with everything that he needed to operate his earthly ministry. Because God knew everything that Jesus would face in the earth realm, God was faithful to equip him with everything that he needed to operate on earth. God has also done the same for you. When the multitudes were with him for three straight days in the wilderness, Jesus thanked his Father and took the lunch of a little boy and provided for thousands. Even though Jesus knew that Lazarus was dead, he stayed where he was for two more days before going to Bethany. When Jesus got to Bethany, Martha came to meet him. When she took Jesus to where Lazarus was, Jesus simply said, “Lazarus come forth” [John 11:1-45] and Lazarus has a permanent record of been brought back from the dead in the Bible. That’s the kind of glory that God wants you to know that you are equipped to let the world see about Him. When the wind and the waves became unruly, again Jesus simply said, “Be still” and the wind and the waves obeyed him. There was even a time when he walked on water. Everything he put his hand to do was done. How could this be? Because he knew that he was equipped with the Holy Spirit and he walked in the knowledge that he was truly equipped. To be equipped means to

be prepared, ready and operational. When you became born again, God did the same for you. Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection is evidence enough of his love for you and I. What he did for you and I, shows up in all four of the Gospels, -- however, nowhere is it more profound than in John 3:16 –“For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son, so that who-soever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” As you meditate upon John 3:16, you see how much God loves you. Why else would He send His Son to die? Maybe you know someone who would do that. I personally don’t know anyone who would give their child’s life as a ransom for my life, especially after all the sins that I committed. Had Jesus, not done that, there would have been no redemption for the world. Greater love has no man, than a man lay down His life for his friends. That’s love. God has equipped you to operate in this earth realm the same way that Jesus was equipped. In [Luke 10:19 KJV], we see Jesus saying, “Behold, I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and nothing shall in no wise harm you.” Jesus also equipped you with his Holy Spirit to allow you to do greater things than he did when he walked the earth. Child of God, you have been equipped before the foundation of the world. I therefore encourage you to live purposefully, and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people), making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil. [Ephesians 5:15-16 – The Amplified Bible] Prayer: Father, in the Name of Your Precious Son Jesus, I thank You for equipping me with Your Holy Spirit who works through me to do Your work in the earth. Happy Resurrection Day From In Trust Minis-tries. May God continue to richly bless you and yours.

Matthew 28:1-6 (NIV)

1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

6 He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.

Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)

9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Happy Resurrection Sunday!
