Grand Rapids Ballet Company Keeps Us On Our Toes

GR Ballet performs new, modern shows; offers discounts to audience

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Dec. 3, 2010 Written off by many as twinkle toes, tutus, and

something your sister tries when shes six, ballet has become the date night every guy dreads.

But the Grand Rapids Ballet is redefining this stereotype as they continue their 2010-

2011 season with four more performances and new discounts to attract a broader crowd.

Performing The Nutcracker, Dec. 3-5 and 10-12, the Grand Rapids Ballet Company

(GRBC) is uniting with the Grand Rapids Symphony to bring to life the classic Christmas story

    of Clara and the Nutcracker.

Its just not Christmas until I see the Nutcracker, said GRBC Facebook follower Melisa

    Solem

The Grand Rapids Ballet is also performing more modern pieces this season as they

showcase singer Frank Sinatra in Nine Sinatra Songs Jan. 28-30 and Feb. 4-6. The show will

showcase many of Sinatras hits and will feature costumes from fashion designers such as Oscar

de le Renta. The Boy Who Wouldnt Do His Homework & Mother Goose Suite will also be

performed Feb. 19-20 in a montage of childhood stories from Mother Goose.

The company will finish off their season with Mario Radacovskys Romeo and Juliet and

the classic story of two star crossed lovers May 13-15 and 20-22.

In an effort to broaden their audience, the Grand Rapids Ballet has begun a College Rush

Deal for all of this seasons performances. Students can now show their college ids at the box

office one hour before show time and are offered the best available seat for $10.

The ballet is something new and exciting that I wouldnt normally think to do on a

Friday or Saturday night, said Grand Valley State University student Melody Russell I always

assumed it was something way too expensive and something you do when youre older.

The GRBC is also a member of Culture Pass GR, a discount pass for all of the arts in

Grand Rapids including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Rapids Childrens Museum,

Grand Rapids Symphony and the Fredrick Meijer Gardens. The pass includes different discounts

and specials to each participating location.
