SNMP based management of the AOLT-4000 platform

Applications One or two AOLT-4000-CTL cards, installed at either end of an AOLT-4000 chassis, can be used to control and manage the AOLT-4000 system. High Performance Control Plane The AOLT-4000-CTL card extends a dedicated, out-of-band GbE control plane link, over the backplane, to each slot in the AOLT-4000 chassis. The AOLT-4000-CTL card contains a high-performance embedded CPU that executes the system-level control and management plane software for the AOLT-4000 platform, including system-level resource allocations, critical alarm/event reporting, etc. The card’s software implements a fl exible, low-overhead inter-card communications frame-work that assists in fast protection switching of the switch/timing and GPON line cards in the AOLT 4000 chassis, or resources in them.

Persistent Storage Two GBytes of persistent storage are available for confi guration data and software images for all the cards in the AOLT-4000 chassis.

High Availability To increase the control plane availability, a second mate AOLT-4000-CTL card can be inserted in the AOLT-4000 chassis, providing 1+1 redundancy. Failure of the ac-tive or standby AOLT-4000-CTL card, or both of them, does not aff ect the working traffi c in the AOLT-4000 chassis. The AOLT-4000-CTL card also ensures high avail-ability for other cards in the system through dedicated hardware level inter-card signaling.

Management The AOLT-4000-CTL supports SNMP based management of all the cards in the AOLT-4000 platform from Alphion’s Element Management System (AEMS). Using a GbE control plane link to AOLT-4000-SWT (the AOLT-4000 platform’s Switch/Tim-ing card), the AOLT-4000-CTL card supports in-band management of the AOLT-4000 system through one of the network uplink ports of the Switch/Timing card.

Applications As a key card of the AOLT-4000 platform, AOLT-4000-SWT enables effi cient and controlled forwarding of Ethernet/packet traffi c between the GPON line cards and the up-link service/edge node (typically, a router or a switch). Robust Layer-2 Switching AOLT-4000-SWT contains a high-capacity switching engine that supports hard-ware based learning of up to 16K MAC addresses, 4094 VLANs, and Independent VLAN Learning (IVL) based forwarding. It also supports MAC, protocol and subnet based VLANs; IEEE 802.1ad Q-in-Q VLAN stacking; and IEEE 802.3ad link aggrega-tion. Featuring an aggregate switching capacity of 200 Gb/s, the AOLT-4000-SWT support line-rate forwarding of unicast and multicast packets, for all packet sizes, under all conditions.

Packet Filtering/Classifi cation AOLT-4000-SWT includes a fl exible packet fi lter/classifi er that can fi lter packets based on any Layer 2-7 fi eld, including MAC address, IP address, VLAN ID, packet type, etc, supporting multiple lookups and actions per packet. Filter actions in-clude dropping, priority re-marking, rate limiting, etc. The AOLT-4000-SWT card also support access control list (ACL) based policing; fl ow metering, with a granu-larity of 64 kb/s to 1 Gb/s; two rate three color marking (trTCM); and class-based marking for SLAs.

Intelligent QoS AOLT-4000-SWT supports 8 priority queues per port, head of line blocking (HOLB) prevention, service aware fl ow control, bandwidth guarantee per class of ser-vice and/or per port, DSCP re-marking, DSCP to 802.1p mapping, and 2-levels of drop precedence per queue. It features a packet scheduler that supports multiple scheduling algorithms, including strict priority (SP), weighted round robin (WRR), and defi cit round robin (DRR). The AOLT-4000-SWT also supports individual rate limiting of broadcast, unknown unicast and multicast traffi c on a per port basis.

High Availability AOLT-4000-SWT supports 1+1 redundancy, protecting the AOLT-4000 platform’s data plane and TDM synchronization clocks from a single card failure.

Feature SummaryDescriptionThe Alphion power saving AONT-UPS protects the AONT-100 and AONT-1000 family of SFU ONTs from bad power as a result of surges and power outs. The AONT-UPS is a compact backup power solu-tion companion to the AONT-100 and AONT-1000 family of SFU ONTs. The unit can be either wall mounted or placed on the fl oor near the ONT.

Application The AONT-UPS is meant to provide uninterrupted service from the AONT-100 and AONT-1000 family of SFU ONT’s. This ensures that voice, data and internet are fully functional, even during a power outage or power surge, for up to 5 hours. When the power supply is restored, the back-up battery charges up in 18 hours or less depending on the battery discharge during the power out.

Safe and Reliable Operation The AONT-UPS comes with built in over voltage and over current protection. In addition, the unit also includes a Low-Voltage-Disconnect circuit function that disconnects the battery when it gets below 10.5V. The surge protection features help prevent damage to the Alphion ONT products that can occur due to frequent power fl uctuations.

Performance MonitoringAEMS supports performance management functions in accor-dance with ITU-T G.984.x standards for GPON and RFC 2544 for Ethernet interfaces. • Scheduled performance data collection / logging at confi gu-

rable launch time & rate• Confi guration of error counter thresholds• Ethernet statistics (FCS errors, dropped frames, etc.)• Flexible archival, reporting, and transferring or performance

data• Archive performance data for a month• On-demand and automated, periodic reporting (including

daily, weekly, and monthly) of performance dataCalendar ManagementAEMS can schedule administrative operations to be performed repeatedly at a particular time of day. These operations can include NE confi guration backup, software image download, performance data retrieval, operator login/logout attempts, etc.

NE Software Management• Loading of new NE software images• Management of multiple versions of NE software on the same

network• Management of multiple software image versions on the

same NE (e.g. active and standby images)• Installation of software updates• Software download status reporting• Administrator authorization for the loading of NE software

from local or remote operator terminalsDatabase Management• Support for a multi-user accessible database server, with a

minimum of 25 concurrent users (including local and remote terminals)

• Database management software support system data, soft-ware version, and database backup

Security• SSL based secured communication• Secure certifi cate and RADIUS based access, with customiz-

able user and profi le based authorization• Privileged operations requires a login password• Reporting of all login and logout attempts in a security log fi leFault Tolerance• Dual homed connectivity to two gateway NEs (GNEs) of a sub-network ensures EMS connectivity on the failure of the AOLT-4000-CTL control card of one of the NEs• No deterioration in existing services on total loss of EMS con-nectivity; ON restoration of EMS connectivity, AEMS will “sync up” with the control cards, which can hold up to 6,400 perfor-mance and fault events, with a minimum of 100 alarms• On total loss of EMS connectivity, LCT privilege remains for monitoring and local confi gurations• Supports a disaster recovery EMS server and its interconnec-tion to an existing server, and operate ability to switch over between them• Supports diagnostics software to trouble-shoot EMS faultsSNMP InterfaceThe AEMS provides a SNMP v2 or SNMP v3 interface on the Southbound interface to communicate with AOLT-4000 Sys-tem.Northbound InterfaceNorthbound CORBA / XML based interface.

DescriptionThe AEXT-5100 Series of GPON Reach Extension products is an innovative solution that Alphion provides to cater to the needs of FTTx service providers that require a technology / product to enable them to extend the reach of their existing Central offi ce PON OLTs without having to put in remote OLTs to serve a cluster of sub-scribers. The AEXT-5100 PON.ext™ products are based on Alphion’s proprietary QLight® technology platform for the manufacturing of advanced discrete photon-ic integrated circuits (PICs). Because the AEXT-5100 PON.ext™ products use the same InP semiconductor technology used in virtually all telecom lasers, it is able to amplify signals at 1310 and 1490 nm, wavelengths not accessible with commer-cial fi ber-amplifi er (EDFA) technology. Due to extremely fast response time of the InP semiconductor optical amplifi er inside the PON.ext™ can accommodate both continuous (downstream) and bursty (upstream) traffi c. Alphion’s proprietary ap-proach to the incorporation of gain elements, optical fi lters, wavelength division multiplexers, input and output power detectors, as well as the associated control electronics for adiabatic gain control insures high and uniform performance over the lifetime of the PON.ext™. Central Offi ce Consolidation As service providers worldwide put an increased emphasis on rural connectivity spurred on by government support, they realize that cluster of subscribers are not usually within the serving area of a typical PON OLT system. For carriers faced with the option of installing and managing remote OLTs or setting up multiple small central offi ce, the Alphion AEXT-5100 off ers a cost eff ective alternative. The AEXT-5100 off ers the ability to extend the reach of a standard PON port to 60 km thereby eliminating the need to setup multiple central offi ces. Even within urban areas, the use of reach extension technology allows service providers to consider-ably reduce their CAPEX and OPEX budgets by collapsing multiple central offi ces into a single facility.

Increased Port Utilization The AEXT-5100 allows service providers to deploy up to 128 subscribers on a sin-gle GPON Port thereby doubling the subscriber capacity of existing GPON system. This increased capacity can be provided simultaneously with the increased reach of 60 km enabling carriers to rapidly and cost eff ectively increase both their reach and capacity.
