About High Iron Simulations

High Iron Simulations began serving the Train Simulator community in October 2012 by developing and publishing free Train Simulator scenarios to Steam Workshop — and we're pleased that our series of more than 300 Steam Workshop free scenarios have been downloaded by Train Simulator enthusiasts more than 750,000 times.

As a Train Simulator Partner Programme member, we collaborate with Dovetail Games to produce a wide range of realistic scenario packs for Train Simulator North American routes.

The Electro-Motive GP40-2

The success of the Electro-Motive GP40-2 was demonstrated in numbers … 1,143 units constructed over a production period of 14 years, 27 original purchasers, and more than four decades of reliable service to North America ’s railroads. Produced from 1972 through 1986, the four-axle (B-B), 3,000-horsepower GP40-2 road-switcher was the direct sire of another highly successful (and similar) locomotive, the EMD GP40. Electro-Motive’s GP40 had debuted with the arrival of the builder’s 645-series diesel powerplant in 1966, and through the end of 1971, more than 1,200 GP40s had been built for 31 railroads. The GP40-2, like the entire Electro-Motive “Dash -2” line of 1972, was an evolutionary extension of EMD’s “40” line. “Dash 2” features included improved traction motors and alternators; strengthened components in the 645-power plant, and solid-state modular components in the electrical and control systems. All of which translated to enhanced reliability and operating efficiency for the GP40-2 as compared to its highly-regarded predecessor. Today, more than four decades after its introduction, the GP40-2 can still be found working in numbers for the likes of CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, and a variety of U. S. regional railroads – and that speaks volumes for the capabilities, versatility, and efficiency of the remarkable second-generation diesel locomotive. The Train Simulator GP40-2 Loco Pack features the EMD road-switcher in the distinctive liveries of Denver & Rio Grande Western; Western Pacific; Union Pacific; Norfolk Southern; and CSX. This scenario “mini-pack” features the GP40-2 operations of two eastern railroads: The Norfolk Southern and CSX. Eastern rail giants Norfolk Southern and CSX were not original purchasers of the GP40-2 but have since built large fleets. Norfolk Southern acquired 71 GP40-2s with its portion of Conrail in 1999. And among the 27 original buyers of the

GP40-2 were no less than 11 railroads that would eventually become members of today’s giant CSX system. The pre-CSX railroads that purchased the GP40-2 included the four largest CSX predecessors: Chesapeake & Ohio; Baltimore & Ohio, Seaboard Coast Line; and Louisville & Nashville. It included notable mid-sized roads such as Western Maryland and Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac. And it included inheriting a portion of Conrail ’s GP40-2 fleet when CSX and

NS divided that railroad in 1999. All told, CSX predecessor railroads accounted for more than 450 GP40-2s.

The Scenarios

This “mini-pack” features operations of the GP40-2 on two eastern U. S. Train Simulator routes: The North Jersey Coast & Morristown Lines route; and the NEC: New York - New Haven Route. All scenarios require Dovetail Games’ Train Simulator and the GP40-2 Loco Add-On, as well as one of the above routes as detailed in the individual scenario descriptions (pages 3-4). Scoring for all freight-service scenarios is based upon starting with 1,000 points and deductions are made for any operational errors. [GP40 2.01] BROWNS YARD BOUND

Freight operations on NJ Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line are conducted as a Conrail Shared Assets Operation (CSAO) jointly by Norfolk Southern and CSX. You are the engineer of CSAO symbol OI-16 making its way from Oak Island to Browns Yard and Sayreville, N.J., via the “Chemical Coast” line. You are at Wood Interlocking, ready to pull onto the NJCL, perform switching work at Perth Amboy, then proceed south to South Amboy. As is typical for this train, locomotives from both NS and CSX are in your lash-up.

Featured Equipment: Norfolk Southern and CSX GP40-2s.

Scenario Duration: Approximately 45 minutes.

Requirements: North Jersey Coast & Morristown Lines Route; GP40-2 Loco Add-On.

[GP40 2.03] OAK POINT AFTERNOON

For CSX, the center of rail operations in New York City proper is Oak Point Yard in the Bronx. You are the engineer of the afternoon Oak Point switcher and will be making a turn to nearby Hunts Point to deliver cars to the produce terminal and Transflow terminal, then return with outbound cars. Your power is a single CSX EMD GP40-2. Featured Equipment: CSX GP40-2. Scenario Duration: Approximately 50 minutes. Requirements: NEC: New York – New Haven Route; GP40-2 Loco Add-On.

[GP40 2.02] NORFOLK SOUTHERN LOCAL H-02

Freight traffic on NJ Transit’s Morristown Line is handled by Norfolk Southern as well as the regional Morristown & Erie. Something of an institution on the Morristown and the Boonton lines is Norfolk Southern Local H-02 which serves the area from a base at Dover, New Jersey. You are the engineer of NS H-02 with regularly assigned NS GP40-2 3010 as power, and today you have work at Dover, Denville, and Morristown before heading south toward the CSX connection in Harrison. Featured Equipment: Norfolk Southern GP40-2. Scenario Duration: Approximately 65 minutes. Requirements: North Jersey Coast & Morristown Lines Route; GP40-2 Loco Add-On.

[GP40 2.04] BALLAST HAUL TO FRESH POND

The state of Connecticut is home to numerous stone quarries which supply construction projects and railroad ballast in the New York region. Often these trains move with Providence & Worcester power from Connecticut to Fresh Pond Yard in Queens, but today CSX EMD GP40-2s are doing the honors. As the scenario begins, you are stopped near Shell Interlocking on the Hell Gate Line awaiting an Amtrak train to pass. Featured Equipment: CSX GP40-2. Scenario Duration: Approximately 30 minutes. Requirements: NEC: New York – New Haven Route; GP40-2 Loco Add-On.

[GP40 2.05] SA-31 NORTHBOUND A local found on the south end of the North Jersey Coast Line is SA-31, which typically makes a turn from Browns Yard down to the old Conrail Secondary via Red Bank. You are the engineer of SA-31 with a pair of Norfolk Southern GP40-2s as power and are ready to do some set-outs and pick-ups at Red Bank before heading north toward South Amboy. Featured Equipment: Norfolk Southern GP40-2. Scenario Duration: Approximately 35 minutes. Requirements: North Jersey Coast & Morristown Lines Route; GP40-2 Loco Add-On.
