District Governor’s Corner A message for My Lions

    Dear Fellow Lions,

Our District has responded well to the New Voices challenge of International President Gudrun Yngvadottir who became the first woman elected as the President of our organization. I set a goal to increase our women’s membership to 32% from last year’s 29.50%. As of April 30th, our District reached 32.39% so this has been very successful and satisfactory year overall.

In March, LCI offered a special Presidential Certificate of Achievement Award to club membership chairpersons for their ongoing efforts to invite men and women to join their clubs. I am pleased to share that I have been notified by IP Yngvadottir that the Balance in Membership Award at the club level was achieved by the Lakewood Lions Club and the Cherry Hill Pennsauken Korean Lions Club for increasing gender parity in recruiting efforts.

In 1987 LCI voted to allow women to join the Lions family and today we have more than 425,000 women serving around the world. A growing number of women are serving in leadership positions and today Lions’ service has never been stronger. As the number of women in leadership positions continues to grow, the ways in which they can use their unique perspectives to find innovative ways to serve will continue to grow as well.

A balanced membership is an indication of a healthy club and we can and should improve the gender balance of our organization. As clubs recruit women into their clubs and encourage women to take leadership positions, we will also improve our service impact.

The NJ Lions 98th State convention is coming soon. It gives us, the New Jersey Lions, a way to celebrate our successes this year. I encourage you to attend and enjoy the festivities at the convention in Atlantic City. International Director, Patricia Vannett and her spouse PDG Kevin, will be our honored guests. There will be a “Strides walk “to raise awareness and funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, many seminars, and the election of our future leaders during the convention.

I want to give thanks to the State convention committee for their dedicated service and efforts in preparing for the convention. I know we will all have a wonderful time! I hope to see you there.

    Yours in Lionism,

    DG Kara C. Schnure

    • Resolutions The club resolutions in support of their club members running for office were read by Resolutions chair, Ken Ressler. Allentown had two resolutions, one supporting 2nd VDG Al Mottola for 1st Vice District Governor, and one supporting ZC Doug Both for 2nd Vice District Governor. Stafford’s resolution was in support of 1st VDG Dave Skrivanek for District Governor.

    • New Member Service Grants – 1st VDG Dave Skrivanek reported that Clubs will be eligible for Service Grants if they report new members in the month of April [Editor’s note: Since the meeting, the time frame has been expanded to between April 1 and June 30] Officers of eligible clubs will receive an application via email in July to apply for a Service Grant for New Members, which awards a total of US$35 for each new member in two installments. A credit will appear on the December 31, 2019 and June 30, 2020 club statements if new members stay active. Funds

District Meeting ~ continued from page 1 should be used to plan activities that will engage

new members in service so they have a great on-boarding experience in your club.

    • MyLion and reporting 2019-20 Club Officers Club officers for 2019-20 should be reported by April 15. Clubs need to enter new officers as soon as they are elected and should not wait until officers are formally installed or begin their terms. Club Secretaries who are still having difficulty submitting officers via MyLCI since it was migrated to the new Lions Account should contact the District’s Information Technology Chairperson, PDG Karen Ressler at [email protected] or at 856 220-6484. If you send her your list of officers she can enter them into MyLCI for you, and help you troubleshoot logging in to your Lion Account. Clubs should make sure they elect all the club officers designated by LCI. Many clubs are forgetting to enter their Service Chairperson, LICF Coordinator, Marketing and Communications Chairperson and Membership Chairperson.

District Meeting ~ continued from page 3 Diabetes Presentation for Lions

The featured guest speaker, Dr. Angel Lazo, Jr., a member of the Elizabeth Cubanos Lions Club, was introduced by the District’s Diabetes Chairperson Donna Freidel. He gave an excellent Powerpoint presentation that provided a basic understanding of the disease, the staggering health care costs associated with treating it and the need to increase awareness about Type 2 Prediabetes and Diabetes and so that it can be prevented and more effectively treated.

The estimated annual cost of diagnosed diabetes in the US is $327 billion. $12 billion is spent in New Jersey alone

Diabetes, simply put, is a disease in which the body is unable to properly use and store glucose. Prediabetes develops when your body begins to have trouble using the hormone insulin. Insulin is necessary to transport glucose – what your body uses for energy – into the cells in the bloodstream.

In the United States, 30 million people have diabetes – yet 7 million of them don’t know they have it

There are no clear symptoms of prediabetes so many people have it but do not know it. The only way to determine if someone is prediabetic is by preforming a simple blood test. Indentifying patients at the prediabetic stage enables doctors to help them from developing diabetes with medication and making lifestyle changes. Patients should increase physical activity, get plenty of fiber, go for whole grains, lose extra weight and make healthy diet choices - good advice for everyone, whether at high risk for diabetes or not.

In the United States, 86 million people have

Prediabetes and 90% of them don’t know it.

The worldwide symbol for Diabetes is a blue circle, but it’s not readily recognized in the US – even though the US has the third greatest incidence of the disease among industrialized nations. (India ranks 1st and China ranks 2nd) Dr. Lazo is advocating the use of the Diabetes symbol as well as a broken blue symbol for Prediabetes, as shown above. For more detailed information, and what you can do to help educate others, please visit the website https://prediabetesawareness.org/.

Stafford Township Lions Club Childhood Cancer Fundraiser - Tackle Kids Cancer ~ Contributed by Rosalinda Armentano

The Stafford Township Lions Club conducted a fundraiser for childhood cancer at Callaway’s on April 26. The event was held in conjunction with the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation in support K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. This was to work towards Lions International’s objective, “Help those affected by childhood cancer survive and thrive.”

Members of the Stafford Lions executive committee recently toured K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital (KHCH) and the new Dorothy B. Hersh Foundation Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Center in the HOPE Tower. With the creation the new Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center in the HOPE Tower, all pediatric patients diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders are now treated at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. During the visit, they met with Dr. Jessica Scerbo, section chief of pediatric hematology/oncology at KHCH and her team, to discuss the needs of the hospital’s growing children’s cancer program. Currently, 20 pediatric cancer patients are being treated here. The development of a comprehensive pediatric cancer program is projected to result in an additional 20-25 patients annually as pediatricians and the community learn about the new Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center. Pediatric oncology is an essential service in the future health care delivery of K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, allowing the pediatric cancer patients to receive their life-saving treatments close to home and with their families by their side.

Stafford Township Lions would like to thank the support of James Young, Executive Director, Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation, Manahawkin, NJ and Ellen Hahn, Development Officer, K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, Neptune, NJ.
