12.06.19 Dear AHS Families, Thanksgiving has come and gone! Can we all agree that sometimes too much time with family (and extended family, specifically) can create an added strain on our sanity and push our patience to the limits? No? Just me? Strange. :) The other day I had a conversation with a student and started by asking about how their Thanksgiving Holiday went. I could tell quickly in the course of our conversation that the time at home was not exactly a positive experience. As I mentioned above, I thought it may have been just too much time with family. However, speaking further, it became increasingly apparent that there was more to it than that. And for me, it was a good reminder that the holidays can be downright difficult for some of us, resurrecting memories of loss, hurt, and sorrow. In the spirit of this holiday season, may we all be lovingly mindful of how others may be processing this time of year. And, when possible, it is my hope that we can all take advantage of the subtle opportunities we have in life to offer peace, love, and joy to those around us this season. Have a GREAT weekend!! The week included messages of hope, positive affirmations, wellness activities, special challenges and more. Hope Squad is a school-based peer-to-peer, suicide prevention program for students. For more information on Hope Squad, click here. ACADEMIC POLICY UPDATE: FHSD high schools have a "safety net" policy that automatically raises very low 1st or 3rd quarter final grades to a 55%. The purpose is to give those students the opportunity to work hard and improve in the 2nd or 4th quarter so that they still have a good chance to pass the class, earning semester credit. The 55% "safety net" is only for 1st and 3rd quarter; 2nd and 4th quarter grades will not be altered from what has been earned by the student. This information was shared in August/September parent updates, but we felt it timely to include now as we draw nearer to the end of the 2nd quarter. 2020 YEARBOOKS:
