16.12 Salient Observations: 16.12.1 Engine Performance:

i) The backup torque is 16.1% ii) The maximum brake horsepower of the engine at 2000 rpm was observed

as 9.1 kW. iii) The coolant water consumption was observed as 21.5 % of total coolant

capacity during two hours maximum power test. The observed value is considered on higher side.

16.12.2 Rotary shaft performance: The maximum rotary shaft power was measured as 7.5 kW 16.12.3 Drawbar performance test: 16.12.3.1 The power tiller could develop 3.4 kW power at draw bar performance test

in H1 gear corresponding to 15.4 % wheel slip. In none of the gears

stalling tendency of the engine was noticed during the test, which indicates that the dynamic load on the driving wheels is not enough to generate sufficient pull to give maximum drawbar output. This should be looked into.

16.12.4 Mechanical Vibration: The amplitude of mechanical vibration on some of the controls /

measuring points of the power tiller exceeded the limit of 100 micron (Refer: Chapter-9). It should be dampened down to improve operational comfort and life of the components.

16.12.5 Noise measurement: Max. noise at operator’s ear level was observed as 96 dB (A) which is on

higher side against warning and danger limit of 85 dB(A) and 90 dB (A) respectively as specified by ILO. This calls for bringing down the noise level to improve operational comforts.

16.12.6 Haulage test 16.12.6.1 The power tiller could pull a two-wheel trailer of 1.5 tonne gross mass on

the tar macadam road in H3 gear.

16.12.7 Puddling test 16.12.7.1 Puddling test was conducted with cage wheels and rotavator. .16.12.7.2 The maneuverability of power tiller during puddling test was found

satisfactory. 16.12.7.3 On partial dismantling of the power tiller and inspection of the oil samples

from engine, crankcase, transmission case and rotary chain case. No ingress of water and / or mud was noticed at any assembly of the power tiller

16.12.8 Rotavator blades:

i) The dimensions of the blades do not conform, in full, to IS: 6690-1981 (Re-affirmed in 2002).

ii) The hourly rate of wear of straight blade and Hatchet blade were observed to be 0.34 to 0.83 and 0.14 to 1.00 percent respectively.

iii) Chemical composition of hatchet blades and straight blades does not meet in full, the requirements of IS:6690-1981. (Re-affirmed in 2002).

16.12.9.1 As per IS: 12239 (Part 3) – 1988, “maximum safe speed” with trailer is required to be specified by the manufacturer. Necessary action may be taken in this regard.

16.12.9.2 As per IS: 12239 (Part 3) – 1988, balancing mass to be added to achieve correct weight balance of the power tiller with various attachments should be recommended by the manufacturer in the operator manual. This may be examined for compliance.

16.12.9.3 Provision of spark arresting device may be considered for incorporation in the exhaust system.

16.12.9.4 During the field test, silencer got broke and replaced with new one. The cracks were developed on the newly fitted silencer and got repaired. This calls for the use of better quality material/spares.

16.12.10 General observation: 16.12.10.1 The handle grip does not meet the requirement of IS: 11858 – 1986. This

may be looked into for compliance. 16.12.10.2 Provision for draining of sediment/water in fuel tank may be provided to

check contamination /impurities in fuel.
