Brief Industrial Profile of Junagadh District

1. General Characteristics of the District

1.1 Location & Geographical Area

Junagadh District forms part of the SAURASHTRA Region of Gujarat State having an area of 8848 Sq Kms. It is situated in the South west corner of the Paninsula between 20.44° and 21.44° North Latitude and 69.40° and 71.05° East Longtitude.

1.2 Topography :

The climate of the district varies from hot to moderately hot throughout the year except in winter.The climate is humid in coastal belt. (The temperature varies between 10.5 oC being minimum in December and 40.2 oC being maximum in March. The District receives rains from south west monsoon from June to Sept. The average rainfall of last 3 yrs is 1283 mm.

1.3 Availability of Minerals

Junagadh district abounds in mineral resources. The minerals found in the district are limestone,Marl, Black Stone, Gravel and building limestone.

1.4 FOREST

The total area under Forest is 236.86 Sq.Kms. The main product is grass. Other minor food products

are Rayan and karmada. These products are so minor that it cannot be considered as potential resources

for industrial purpose. Estimated availability of major forest product viz. grass is as under:

1.5 ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP

Junagadh district comprises of 14 talukas viz. Junagadh, Una, Keshod, Talala, Bhesan,Malia,Mangrol,Manavadar, Mendarda, Visavadar, Veraval, Vanthali,Kodinar and Sutrapada.The district was reconstituted in 1997 by including Kodinar and Sutrapada talukas in the district. The District Collector is the overall administrative head. Down below there are various district level officers of the State Government to perform/execute the various regulatory/development functions assigned to them. The DIC is one of such district level office headed by an official of the State Govt. designated as General Manager with whom a number of functional managers work for the promotion and development of industrial and commercial enterprises in the district.

Proximity with Pipavav Port has increased the opportunities for industries involved in port & ship building and food processing etc.

The economy is well augmented by the presence of a well established industrial infrastructure. There is presence of a significant number of industrial estates and parks in the district.

Sectors such as cement, edible oil refinery plants, textiles, engineering and fish processing also contributes to the economy.

5. General Issues raised by industry association during the course of meeting

Shortage and irregular supply of power, lack of working capital funds, scarce raw

material and skilled labour are some of the problems faced by the SSI units. Major

constraint faced by GIDC Estates is water shortage . Availability of potable water and

water for industrial use poses a problem. High cost of plots, as a result of high

purchase prices are also a constraint in industrial development.
