Brief Industrial Profile of Hamirpur District

1. General Characteristics of the District The 20th century began with the growth of nationalism in the whole of India and

Hamirpur was no exception. The youth of the district were restless. During the Swadeshi

Movement of 1905, the district did not leg behind in holding public meetings, organizing

strikes and protests. The non-cooperation movement too started in Aug 1920 spread in the

district rapidly as they created revolutionary stir among the masses. The district participated

in election of 1937 under the Govt. of India Act-1935. On the occasion of celebration of silver

Jubilee year of independence 1973, the 323 persons of district (Freedom strugglers) were

granted “Tamra-Patras” placing on record the part played by them in the country’s freedom

struggle.

1.1 Location & Geographical Area.

The district lies between latitude 250 7’N & 2607’N and 79017’E & 80021’E. The Hamirpur

district is bounded by district Jalaun, Kanpur Nagar, Fatehpur, Banda, Mahoba and Jhansi

district. The district Hamirpur is surrounded by Yamuna and Betwa rivers and other rivers

like Dhassan, Barma, Ken, Chandraval and Pandwa. The lenth of the district is 65 KM. The

district is also having one dam named Swami Brahmanand Dam (Maudha Dam) constructed

on the river Barma. The total area of the district is 4121.9 Sq. KM having 74.28% irrigation

land and remaining is covered by Forest, Usher & Banjar Bhumi, Charagah and hills etc.

1.2 Topography

The total forest area of the district is 23520 Hectares i.e. 5.6% and none-agricultural area of

the district is 31094 Hectares i.e. 7.4%. The soil consist of the Bundelkhand varieties i.e.

Mar, Kabar, Parua and Rakar. The Kabar range from rich dark to light brown and its chief

characteristics is extreme adhesiveness, which causes it to quickly dry and cake into hard

block. The climate condition of the district intensively hot summer and pleasant cold season.

The temperature of the district is 280C to 450C in summer and upto 20C to 30C during cold

season. The northern flat plan along with the Yamuna is less than 1000 feet above sea level,

and devoid of hills or forest patches, with a maximum height of 2000 feet from the sea level.

1.3 Availability of Minerals.

There is plenty of Mar and Kabar in the district which are used in construction of building and

hill stone (concrete) is also used for construction of building and others.

The total forest area of the district is 24012 Hectares.

1.5 Administrative set -up

There are 4 Tehsils and 7 blocks in the district. The headquarter of the district is surrounded by

Yamuna river and Betwa River and west side Nalatir adjoining both rivers Yamuna and Betwa.
