Government of Canada invests in the ... continued from front page The first phase of this life extension is

the definition phase, during which Bell Heli-copter Textron Canada Limited – the original equipment manufacturer – will develop de-sign changes to upgrade the helicopter’s avi-onics systems, engines, and cockpit displays, and integrate sensor systems.

This definition work, valued at up to $90 million (including taxes), will be performed under the existing support contract for the CH-146, which was awarded to Bell Heli-copter Textron Canada Limited in 2011. The overall scope of the Griffon Limited Life Ex-tension project is estimated to be valued at approximately $800 million (taxes included).

The Griffon, Canada’s multi-purpose utility helicopter, is essential to CAF op-erations both at home and abroad. The he-licopter fills a number of functions, includ-ing tactical troop transport, reconnaissance, escort and surveillance, casualty evacuation, disaster relief, special operations aviation support, and search and rescue.

Upgrading the CH-146 will ensure that it continues to make important contributions to the success of the full range of the CAF’s missions and operations.

“Through our defence policy, Strong, Se-cure, Engaged, we are providing the women and men of our Canadian Armed Forces with the equipment they need to do the important work we ask of them,” said Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence. “A tactical trans-port helicopter capability is absolutely critical to the success of the full range of military op-erations. With these upgrades, we are ensuring that our military can continue to rely on this proven helicopter for years to come.”

CH-146 Griffons are currently deployed on Operation PRESENCE in Mali, providing an armed escort for the CH-147 Chinooks during medical evacuations and transport of troops and supplies. Griffons are also deployed on Operation IMPACT in Iraq, carrying Canadian troops, equipment, and supplies in support of the CAF’s training mission.

They provided close fire support and tactical transport during the CAF’s engage-ment in Afghanistan, reducing exposure of CAF personnel to ground threats such as ambushes, land mines, and improvised ex-plosive devices.

The CH-146 is based on the commercially available Bell 412 helicopter, and was devel-oped with unique specifications for the Ca-nadian Armed Forces.

Canada’s fleet of CH-146 Griffons en-tered service between 1995 and 1997.

The Griffon Limited Life-Extension (GLLE) project will extend the life of the fleet to at least 2031 while the project for the acqui-sition of the next generation of tactical utility helicopters is developed and implemented.

Once the definition phase is complete, a separate contract is expected to be awarded for implementation in 2022.

“Extending the life of the CH-146 Griffon fleet will ensure the longevity of the RCAF’s tactical helicopter capability,” said Lieutenant-General A.L. Meinzinger, Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force. “These helicopters have performed extremely well over the years and with these new upgrades, they will con-tinue to be a valuable asset that will allow our personnel to carry out missions and operations successfully well into the future.”

Writing and delivering a eulogy is truly an honour. A eulogy is a formal expression of praise for someone who has recently died. It’s a way to bring the memory of your loved one into the minds of those in attendance at the funeral service and is an opportunity to honour a life well lived.

Most eulogies will contain thoughts on subjects such as:Family and other close relationshipsEducation/work/careerHobbies or special interestsFavorite memoriesSpecial accomplishments

Some people prefer to prepare and deliver a serious eulogy while others will want to keep the tone light. A mix of elements, solemnity and humor, often work best. It allows the audience to grieve appropriately but to also share in the celebration for the life of a loved one. Your words will paint a picture of the deceased through the memories, anecdotes and stories you tell.

The most touching and meaningful eulogies are written from the heart. A eulogy does not have to be perfect. Whatever you write and deliver will be appreciated by the people in attendance.

WHAT IS A EULOGY?

RCAF Airwomen planning June reunion

Thousands of Canadian women served in the Second World War: there were 4,480 Nursing Sisters and, in 1941, the Royal Canadian Air Force’s wom-en’s division was created. There were

50,000 women in the Canadian Armed Forces, of which approximately 17,000 served in the RCAF, working in both traditional and non-traditional trades.

In 1951, the Canadian government declared women would be recruited into the RCAF, as it needed greater numbers of personnel because of the construction of three radar lines across the country: the Distant Early Warning Line, the Mid-Canada line and the Pi-netree line.

On July 3, 1951, the first 80 enlisted women arrived for basic training at St. Jean, Quebec. By 1953, the number of women had increased to 3,133 and, by 1955, the number had dropped to 2,903. By the early 1960s changes in radar technology meant the RCAF’s personnel needs had dropped consid-erably and it decided to stop recruiting women.

In 1960, there were over 2,800 wom-en, in 1962 there were 2,024, in 1963 there were 1,830 and in 1966 there were only

530 women left in the RCAF. In 1958, there were 63 trades open to women; by 1963, there were only 13 trades open to women. In 1967, the Army, Navy and Air Force were unified.

One day in Vancouver in 1988, Di-ane White and Shirley Duff met at a de-partment store “by chance” and made a luncheon date to talk over old times. During that luncheon, they thought it would be a great idea to hold a reunion of all airwomen from the 1951 to 1966 era. They set about planning a reunion and held a very successful one in Van-couver in June 1990, attracting women from all across Canada, the United States and Mariana Islands. A second reunion was held in Ottawa in June 1993. After that, it became a periodic occurrence. These RCAF Airwomen re-unions have attracted anywhere from 200 to 450 ex-airwomen and a good time is had by all, renewing old friend-ships and making new ones.

Unit Environment Officer CourseBeginning on February

7, 4 CDSG Env Svcs will conduct its annual two day Unit Environment Of-ficer (UEnvO) course to the personnel that are slated to take on that role at their re-spective Units.

The UEnvO is a small, but important role within a Unit. They are the main link between their Unit’s Chain of Command and the 4 CDSG Env Svcs team.

Some of the main re-sponsibilities of the UEnvO include: • Advising the Unit CO and unit members on envi-ronmental issues;• Disseminating any new environmental policies and procedures;• Coordinating any envi-ronmental reports or re-turns; • Assessing the Units proj-ects and activities to de-termine if any mitigation

measures are required and ensuring they are imple-mented; and• Planning for Unit en-vironmental protection needs.

Throughout this course, both military and DND personnel will learn about the various Federal and Provincial environmental laws and regulations and how these apply to the ac-tivities and exercises they conduct, both on and off DND property.

They will be taught how to effectively draft an Environmental Effects De-termination for Unit level exercises and what types of mitigation measures could be employed based on a variety of activities. We will discuss why it is im-portant to incorporate en-vironmental aspects in the planning stages of all exer-cises. For example, permits from federal or provincial

authorities can take many weeks to obtain, proper planning can alleviate last minute pressures and the risk of not obtaining re-quired permits in time.

Participants will also learn about the Army Envi-ronment Program, and how it is designed to facilitate military training by ensur-ing the overall sustainabili-ty of our training areas. The concepts of pollution pre-vention and sustainability will be discussed and how these can be incorporated into everyday Unit activi-ties and exercises.

The UEnvO course is a CAF and DND wide certified course and skills learned here in Petawawa can be transferred with an individual wherever they go. Please contact Nicole McGregor via email at [email protected] to be loaded onto the course. adults

PETAWAWA – Over thir-ty Cadets from 2642 3 RCR Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) undertook the 12-Hour Fitness Chal-lenge to raise $8,000 for their March Break Trip to New York City at Dundonald Hall on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018.

The 12-Hour Fitness Challenge exemplified the spirit of the Cadet Train-ing Program with Cadets actively participating in a jampacked day full of fun,

challenging, and rewarding physical activities like Zum-ba, strength and condition-ing, swimming, badminton, yoga, and running.

A month prior, Cadets were challenged to raise $200 each. They were en-couraged to seek out pledges within the community and then held accountable to re-main active for 12 hours of physical fitness.

“Cadets not only ful-filled their pledge promise

but should be proud of their hard work to achieve their fundraising goals,” said Capt Sandra Heidel.

The fitness fundraiser would also not have been such a success without com-munity support and involve-ment. PSP instructors’ Ana Oghma, Shannon Myers, and Vanessa Hawkins show-cased PSP programming of-fered to military members and the community, facilitat-ing energetic and fast-paced

Zumba, Bootcamp and Spin classes. Meanwhile, Laura Gonu and Kevin McKinnon from Valley Apex Training Grounds put Cadets to the test in a grueling condition-ing session.

Local Businesses Show Their Support to Petawawa’s Army Cadet Corps

2642 3 RCR RCACC is also filled with gratitude for the support it received from local business vendors ear-lier in 2018.

2642 3 RCR RCACC ac-cepted two generous dona-tions during the CO’s Pa-rade Night on Tuesday, Dec. 4., 2018. Marie-Julie Séguin, owner of Lav-Vape Shop, donated $1,500 and Dr. Alex Jelev from Petawawa Dental Centre also donated $500 to fulfill an annual pledge he made to the Corps.

More so, two local fe-male entrepreneurs hosted separate fundraisers to raise over $1,500 in support of the Army Cadet Corps.

Janalla Janzen of Janalla Photography ran Christmas mini-photo sessions at the Petawawa Choose and Cut on Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sun-day, Nov. 18. Families from

the area walked away with 10 beautiful photos to share with family members this Christ-mas. A portion of the cost of each 20-minute session went towards the Corps and the event raised over $500.

Amanda Dawe from Out of the Woods Design With Amanda also held a paint sign night called, Christmas in November, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 436 on Friday, Nov. 23. Each of the 36 participants chose a stencil and their own paint colours to create a Holiday wooden sign. This is the largest paint sign night Ama-da Dawe has hosted to date.

The Deep River Legion shared the space while vari-ous local businesses – Pet-

awawa Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, The Bath Boutique, Red Apple, Brittany Stewart from Scent-sy, and Blanche Shepherd from Tupperware, donated various prizes. Parents or Guardians of Cadets also provided food plates for the successful event. Christmas in November raised $1,200 for 2642 3 RCR RCACC.

Cadets, Staff, and Spon-sorship Support Committee of 2642 3 RCR RCACC are highly appreciative of all the continued community sup-port and business backing they received in 2018. Funds raised will be put towards Corps training activities, in-cluding a March Break trip in 2019.

NEWS FROM THE GREATER PETAWAWA CIVITAN CLUB By Marie FE Arnold, PRO

Years behind us we now have Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and our Spring Convention all coming in the next few months.

Have you been out to our great Bingo on Sunday night? If not, you missed out on some fun and getting to know other people in our community. I am happy to say we have some new people come out and we hope they enjoyed the Bingo. On Sun-day night Feb. 3 our 52 Special will be $2,000 and it must go. We also have other specials like the $1,000 jackpot that goes every week with a $100 second jackpot prize. Each Sunday night we give away one $25 bingo voucher so you could play bingo for free the next time you come. If you would like to give a gift to someone who likes to play bingo, you can buy a voucher or as many as you like. They make a great gift.

Now if you haven’t had time to eat supper before you get to bingo we have hot dogs, sandwiches and some other good-ies along with tea, coffee and pop for sale. Sometimes we have some homemade goodies, too.

Just a reminder to all you fishermen and women out there, we will be holding a fishing tournament again this year. It will be held at the marina in Pembroke on August 17, 2019, so regis-ter early so you don’t get left out of all the fun. I will have more information about this event in the upcoming weeks. You may call Civitan Allen Stewart at 613-735-3791 or Civitan John Van-den Baar at 613-717-5674 for more information.

Hope to see you all at our next Sunday night Bingo - why not bring a friend along with you. Have a great week and keep heathy.

Thought for the week: Sometimes the best gift you can give is a hug and a smile.

God Bless you all.
