GOV. CUOMO IS PART OF NEW YORK CORRUPTION PROBLEM,

MORE VOTERS TELL QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL;

BUT ISSUE HAS NO IMPACT AS GOV TOPS CHALLENGER 2-1

Government corruption in New York State is a very or somewhat serious problem, 83 percent of voters say, and

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is part of the problem, 48 percent of voters say, while 41 percent say he is part of the

solution, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

In his bid for reelection, Gov. Cuomo tops Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, the Republican

challenger, 56 – 28 percent, virtually unchanged from a 57 – 28 percent lead in a May 21 survey by the

independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

New York State voters approve 57 – 38 percent of the job Cuomo is doing, and say 56 – 36 percent that

he deserves reelection, little changed from the May 21 findings.

Cuomo gets a 55 – 36 percent favorability rating, compared to Astorino’s 25 – 22 percent favorability,

but 51 percent don’t know enough about Astorino to form an opinion of him.

Even less well known are Zephyr Teachout, facing Cuomo on the Democratic primary ballot, who gets

an 88-percent don’t-know-enough score, and Howie Hawkins, the Green Party general election candidate, with

89 percent who don’t know enough.

Voters disapprove 50 – 39 percent of the way Cuomo is handling ethics in government, but say 50 – 40

percent that he is honest and trustworthy. Voters say 49 – 31 percent that the governor would do a better job

than Astorino handling ethics in government.

“As they have in the past, voters say government corruption is a big New York problem. How is Gov.

Andrew Cuomo doing in handling ethics problems? Not too hot, voters say. In fact, voters say he’s part of the

problem, not part of the solution,” said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

“Is the governor’s race all over? Did it ever start? Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino gets

only the standard Republican numbers. Voters give Gov. Cuomo a big lead and say he deserves reelection.”

“First, Cuomo has the primary challenge from Zephyr Teachout, who’s about as anonymous as a candidate can

be,” Carroll added.

Of the 51 percent of New York State voters who have read or heard anything about the governor’s

decision to end the Moreland Commission, which was investigating government corruption, 77 percent say the

shutdown was a political deal with legislative leaders while 11 percent say the decision was good government.

Even Democrats say 68 – 15 percent it was a political deal.

Investigations started by the Moreland Commission should be completed by federal prosecutors, voters

say 46 – 5 percent, with 46 percent who haven’t heard enough about it.

Voters say 37 – 8 percent, including 28 – 11 percent among Democrats, that the Cuomo Administration

interfered with the Moreland Commission, but 53 percent don’t know enough about it. Voters say 33 – 9

percent that the governor’s office pressured Moreland Commission members to say there was no interference,

but 54 percent don’t know enough about it.

“Voters who know about it say overwhelmingly it was a political deal, not good government, when

Cuomo killed the Moreland investigating commission. More than one-third of voters also think that the

governor’s office interfered with the commission,” Carroll said.

“But unlike politicians and pundits, voters aren’t giving it a lot of thought.”

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli leads Bob Antonacci, the Republican challenger, 54 –

22 percent. DiNapoli gets a 45 – 19 percent approval rating and voters say 43 – 22 percent that he deserves to

be reelected. Both candidates are little-known: 51 percent of voters don’t know enough about DiNapoli to form

an opinion of him and 77 percent don’t know enough about Antonacci.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman also is over the 50 percent mark in his reelection bid, leading

Republican challenger John Cahill 51 – 29 percent. Voters approve 51 – 22 percent of the job Schneiderman is

doing and say 44 – 24 percent he deserves reelection. The Democrat gets a 41 – 10 percent favorability rating,

with 48 percent who don’t know enough. For Cahill, 72 percent don’t know enough to form an opinion.

From August 14 – 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,034 New York State voters with a margin of

error of +/- 3.1 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
