Daredevils for Dementia Arts Exploration Exhibition

On Sunday 21 August, ten thrillseekers took on the challenge to be a ‘Daredevil for Dementia’ by abseiling down the iconic Mont Orgueil Castle. The morning started at 9am with training at St Catherine’s under the guidance of John, Craig and Dan from Jersey Adventures, then the group proceeded to Gorey to conquer the 65ft drop. The conditions were windy (which added to the excitement), but spirits and camaraderie were high whilst experiencing amazing views from the top.

The event was organised to increase awareness of dementia, and in doing so the group has raised a fabulous £1912 for the charity. A huge thank you to all who supported this event – sponsors, participants and organisers.

‘It was a great experience to take on the ‘Daredevil for Dementia’ challenge. The abseil was both rewarding and exhilarating. I’m delighted I stepped out of my comfort zone for such a good cause’. JAA Supporter.

Following a decision by the Parish of St Helier, JAA was chosen as one of only a few charities to promote their cause on a brand new Refuse Truck.

‘The Parish of St Helier takes great pleasure in providing this fantastic signpost for the support available locally for anyone affected by dementia. Four of the St Helier refuse trucks are now promoting key messages to the public at no additional cost to the ratepayer.’ said Constable Simon Crowcroft.

Be our Charity Champion 2017Since forming in 2010, JAA has received fantastic support from a number of corporate sponsors for which we are extremely grateful.

Do you work for an organisation which chooses to fundraise for a different charity each year? If so could your company be our 2017 Charity Champion and consider supporting the work of Jersey Alzheimer’s Association?

In order for our services to be sustainable we need to secure long-term funding. Of equal importance is the need to raise awareness of dementia in Jersey.

If you would like to discuss how we could work together, please contact Mark Blamey, email. [email protected] or Tel. 07700 336627.

Thank you.

Co-op Share NumberOur charity has its own Co-op Share Number: 421 so every time you do your shopping at one of the Island’s many Co-op Stores why not consider contributing towards the work of Jersey Alzheimer’s Association?

During the month of May we were delighted to be able to use the new second floor gallery space at Jersey Library to host our Arts Exploration Exhibition. The array of work, produced by those who attend the group, included still life drawings, exploring shapes and art inspired by famous artists such as Monet and Van Gogh.

Those who contributed work felt very proud at being given the opportunity to show their work to the public. Lucy Blackmore who leads the group, said:

‘I feel it was a really good opportunity to raise awareness of the work we are doing at JAA and I am constantly amazed at how brave the group are in their expanding creativity’.

Members of the public who viewed the art were invited to leave comments in the visitors’ book:

‘Great art work. They are all different and show personality. It looks like everyone worked hard producing them.’

‘Inspiring insights into the creative minds – great stuff!’

Arts Exploration is a weekly art as therapy programme for people living with dementia, their families and carers. The venue is the Elim Centre off Plat Douet Road in Georgetown, St Saviour. The group meets every Wednesday 11am to 1pm with tea/coffee and biscuits provided. No need to book – just turn up.

JAA Tea Party

On Sunday 26 June over 120 invited guests attended a special Afternoon Tea Party at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel in St Helier.

This was a deliberately low-key event, with friends of the charity having the opportunity to get to know each other. Our guests included many local people living with dementia and care providers, as well as JAA staff, volunteers and supporters of the charity.

Education – Awareness, Understanding and Support

Crestbridge Sponsorship

Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s a collective term which describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills and is caused by a number of disorders which affect the brain. There are over 100 types of dementia with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common.

As different types of dementia have slightly different symptoms, which may be experienced differently by each person, making the diagnosis of a specific dementia can be difficult.

Common symptoms though can include memory loss, problems with thinking and planning, difficulties with language, problems recognising people and things, changed personality and behaviour and problems coping with the usual activities of life.

Dementia is usually progressive and sadly there are no cures. Some drug treatments are available to slow the progress of some types of dementia, but these are not suitable for everyone.

People with dementia can have a good quality of life, with help, support and quality care from their family and a specialist medical team.

Dementia affects mainly people over 65, but it is not a normal part of ageing. Everyone gets more forgetful as they get older, but this does not mean they have dementia. Young people can also get dementia, usually referred to as early-onset, but this is much less common.

For more information, please either go to our website www.jerseyalzheimers.com, visit us at our new centre at de Carteret House, Hilgrove Street, St Helier, or call us on 723519.

What is dementia?

About usWe are a full member of Alzheimer Europe, an umbrella organisation consisting of 37 members from 32 European countries.

We would not be able to do what we do without the continuing generosity of businesses and individuals in Jersey. All our funds come from donations and fundraising apart from a small annual grant from the States of Jersey Health and Social Services Department.

Our running costs are approximately £250,000 each year.

All of our services are free of charge with the exception of the Saturday Club for which we charge a small amount to cover transport and catering costs.

277 appointments were made with our Counsellor/Family Support worker, who provided a listening ear and support for those living with dementia and carers.

Questions about dementia?

For the first time this year, the charity has delivered ‘carer centred’ courses specifically for families of people living with dementia. The course entitled ‘JAA TIPSS for carers’ provides a positive environment to empower those who attend with increased awareness of general themes/issues which may challenge the role of care giving, and to improve understanding of support and strategies to enhance the care giving experience.

The four sessions are informative and focus around the acronym TIPSS with opportunities to share Thoughts, access relevant Information and discuss Practical Strategies and Support.

Within each session there is no pressure to participate in group discussions or activities and the course is delivered in a safe and non-judgmental setting. Sessions take place on a Saturday morning 10am – 12pm at Sandybrook Day Centre with daycare available for the person with dementia through our Saturday Club which operates at the same venue.

Topics covered include the following:

• Me – The Carer / Exploring Dementia / Support networks

• Connecting, communicating & understanding behaviour

• Creating a safe and secure environment

• Staying active and healthy.

Feedback from previous courses, with many people continuing to access the services and activities offered by JAA include:

Helpful, informative, satisfying, excellent, useful, enlightening, togetherness, comforting, relaxed, brilliant, inspiring, friendly.

If you would like to attend a future TIPSS for Carers Course, please contact Michala Graham (Educator) on 07700 803756 or [email protected] for more information about sessions running in 2017.

TIPSS - courses for family carers

Jersey Alzheimer’s Association has a committed focus on public education concerning Alzheimer’s and other causes of dementia. In February 2015 the charity appointed a new full time Educator, Michala Graham, to work throughout the island raising awareness and understanding of dementia across Jersey. Michala has been educating companies, parishes groups, family carers and the general public to promote awareness, understanding and how to better support those in our community with dementia. Some examples of her work are detailed below.

The Channel Islands Co-operative Society Colleague TrainingOver the last eighteen months, colleagues of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society in Jersey have been learning more about dementia and how to support customers who may visit their stores living with dementia.

To date, fifty three employees, across differing departments, have attended one of four two hour workshops. The aim of each session is to improve understanding of dementia and general awareness of how to support someone living with dementia in the community, using services offered by the Society. This improved awareness through

engagement with Colleagues aims to enhance the experience of those living with dementia who continue to use services within the community.

The Chief Executive of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, Colin Macleod, said

‘By engaging our Colleagues with this training, we are raising awareness of how best to support our Customers and Colleagues in store. Those who attended the workshops are excited by the new skills learnt and they have been keen to share these with the rest of the team as part of their action taken following the session.’

Should you wish for your business and staff within to become more dementia aware then please contact our Educator, Michala Graham, on 07700 803756 or [email protected] for more information or to book a session.

Voisins Pennies Voisins Department Store in St Helier has supported JAA during 2016 with its ‘Pennies’ scheme. Pennies is a digital charity box, whereby customers are asked if they wish to add 25 pence to their transaction total when they pay by Chip and PIN. JAA is one of four charities to benefit from the Pennies initiative.

Keep collecting those used stamps! If you have any used stamps and don’t know what to do with them please consider giving them to JAA. With the support this year from Jersey Post, we are able to convert used stamps into funds.

Stamps can be delivered to our Drop-In Centre in Hilgrove Street or popped in any of the Jersey Post Collection boxes.

Opening of new JAA Drop-in/OfficeJersey Alzheimer’s Association’s new Drop-in/Office at de Carteret House, Hilgrove Street, St Helier was officially opened on Tuesday 4 August 2015 by our Patron Lady McColl.

On the day of the Official Opening, Sara Palmer, from BBC Radio Jersey broadcast her show live from the office and interviewed a wide range of people associated with the charity. Hilgrove Street marks a strategic move to a bigger and more visible base in St Helier. The number of people seeking help and support has increased five-fold since we relocated from Seale Street. The Drop-in/Office is open to the public from 10am until 1pm, Monday - Thursday, and at other times by appointment.

238 visits were made to our Drop-in Centre in Hilgrove Street in St Helier.

Thank you to Jersey Post

We would like to thank Jersey Post for their generous sponsorship; selecting JAA as their chosen charity, and funding initiatives like this island-wide drop and our great advertisements on their post vans.

Jersey Post have also been carrying out their own fundraising in support of JAA. Catherine Gasston, Marketing Manager at Jersey Post said

‘Jersey Post staff are continuing to work hard to hit our 2016 fundraising target. Recent events have included a Meals for Memories lunch in the canteen and we’re about to launch the Jersey Post Bake Off to raise a few more valuable pennies!’Parish of St Helier Refuse Truck

Dementia Awareness Week – Public WorkshopsThe theme for JAA Dementia Awareness Week in May focused on ‘Remember the Person’ and we are grateful to Jersey Library who helped host a number of opportunities for islanders to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and how to support those with dementia.

A memory box talk with Angela Francey was attended by both members of the public and professionals. Memory boxes are personalised boxes filled with items and memorabilia which are significant to individuals. The use of these boxes can aid connection and communication with those with dementia and serve as a conduit to uphold the identity of those with dementia. A second workshop was held looking at reminiscence activities with men in mind and focused on the theme of travel and transport. Finally, two public lunchtime talks were given which looked at dementia in general and the services, activities and support offered by the charity.

There are two more public talks, in association with Jersey Consumer Council, which will be given by our Educator and Counsellor/Family Support Co-ordinator which are planned for 2016. They will take place in the Library 1pm – 2pm on Tuesday 15 November and again on Wednesday 14 December. The talks will include general awareness of dementia, the work of JAA and understanding the Long Term Care Scheme.

In October 2015, our Educator Michala was invited to speak to the newly established St Ouen Community Support Group. Fifteen volunteers from the group, attended a two hour awareness workshop regarding general dementia awareness and how best to support those within the community.

The group supports local residents with tasks such as transport to attend appointments and weekly shopping trips. During the session we were able to discuss what difficulties someone living with dementia may face within the community and by

doing so, increased the overall understanding of those volunteering with regards to dementia and in particular Alzheimer’s disease.

Recently, Michala met up with some of the volunteers at their Anniversary Afternoon Tea to celebrate their first year of supporting the St Ouen community.

Please contact our Educator if your parish has a Community Support Group and you would like Michala to come and speak to volunteers about dementia support in the community.

Training Parish Community Support Groups in dementia awareness

Jersey Alzheimer’s Association is extremely grateful to Crestbridge whose staff are partnering our charity to raise awareness of our work and that of dementia as part of its community engagement programme throughout 2016.

As part of its support Crestbridge is sponsoring the production costs of this important Newsletter.

Welcome to our 2016 Newsletter!

Thanks to support from Jersey Post, this Newsletter is being delivered to every household in Jersey. The past few years have been extremely busy for the charity. In this Newsletter we provide an overview of the work that we undertake to provide support to the many people whose lives are affected by dementia.

Jersey Alzheimer’s Association assists individuals with dementia and care providers in equal measure. Our strapline is ‘Awareness Understanding Support’. Stigma still sadly surrounds dementia though the topic is now discussed much more openly than was the case only a few years ago.

Welcome...An introduction from Mark Blamey, JAA Manager

Our charity aims to raise awareness of dementia by educating people, organisations and the community. In addition we offer a range of services for the benefit of people with a diagnosis of dementia and care providers. We campaign for an improved understanding of the impact of dementia on society as a whole. We lobby for increased support for people with dementia to enable them to live in their own homes for as long as possible.

The support that we offer is based on ‘person centred care’. This ensures that the person is seen first rather than their dementia.
