    Girls on the Run Head to Milligan College on May 20:

    As Girls Run, Their Body Image Soars

    Girls on the Run (GOTR) will host their Bi-annual 5K Run on Sunday, May 20, at2 p.m. on Milligan College campus. Online registration is now open and will close onMay 17, 2012. Registration will also be available on race day. The event is untimed, butit is expected to last two hours.

    Girls in grades 3-8 from 20 different schools in the five surrounding counties willcomplete a non-competitive race. Their family, peers, and community are also asked to

    join. Training for the race is combined with a 24-week curriculum the girls completetwice a week that started in February. The discussion topics include dealing with bullyingusing media properly, developing self-confidence, and identifying each girls unique

    gifts. We want to empower the girls with a positive body image so that they can besuccessful in other ways, said Northeastern Tennessee GOTR Council Director JessicaThomas. We believe that as girls run, their body image soarsalong with their inspiration for making good achievements in life.

    In the third section of the program, each of the 30 different girl-groups complete acommunity service project. Last year, one group created a Giving Tree and raised $1,000for charity.

    The girls compete to bring as many in people as possible to participate in the run.The winning team receives a pink bedazzled shoe trophy.

    This year, GOTR will partner with Green Sneakers; a nonprofit organization that

    collects used sneakers to give to others in need. Participants and the community areencouraged to bring their used, still-in-good-condition sneakers as donations for the lessfortunate.

    Registration for the event is $20 dollars until May 4, $25 thereafter. A T-shirt isguaranteed if the runner is registered by May 4.

    International sponsors are Horizon Fitness, Goody , and Secret . Local sponsorsare JA Street and Associates, Genworth, East Tennessee Foundation, HEAL Appalachia,Riverside Pediatrics, Watauga Insurance, Panera, EarthFare, Culligan, Hampton Textilesand Printing, Milligan College, and Eastman. This years race is expected to attract morethan 800 runners.

    Girls on the Run was founded in August 1996 by Molly Barker in Charlotte, N.C. Shelater created the curriculum for Girls on the Run which helps build self-esteem inyoung girls that they can carry on to their adulthood. Today, it has over 140 councilsin the United States and Canada.
