Every dog needs training. Of course, it’s a sliding scale – some more than others –and what are we trying to achieve, anyway? Well, for the lady whose dog barks everytime she tries to talk on the phone, or the guy whose dog won’t stop humpingeveryone’s leg, or the grandchild who gets snapped at, or the grandpa whose dogwon’t stop peeing all over the house, and on and on, for all of us who need somesanity in our lives let’s find it in some manners.

Here are a few bad manners I see a lot: jumping up on people – (I like it, but manypeople and kids get hurt, so it’s strongly discouraged). Dogs shouldn’t be biting orsnapping at anybody. No endless barking. No chewing up the house. No submissiveurination. No fighting with other dogs. No counter-surfing. No eating everythingthat falls on the floor. I saw a dog yesterday who ate her owner’s blood pressurepills. They fell out of the bottle and the race was on – mom trying like mad to findthem all while Ella enjoyed her five-tablet snack. She never learned “leave it.” Shedid learn “puke it.”

The list of bad manners is nearly endless, and clever dogs lengthen the list daily.Don’t despair, adaptation is our strong suit. Since it’s normal to break and bend therules, we need to pay attention and close ranks on undesirable behavior quickly and

How could you notinstantly fall in lovewith this face? Junioris a staff and volunteerfavorite who has beenwith us since the begin-ning of December. Hisskin has improved by

leaps and bounds because of all the TLC he is receivingwhile he stays with us. Junior is a 7-year-old superaffectionate, well-mannered boy. He is very gentle, loves to be with people and to rest his head in your lapwhile you dote on him. He is even great in the bathtub, even though we know he doesn’t love baths! If youare looking for a loyal companion who will steal yourheart, you must come and meet Junior!

Cooper is a sensitiveand curious 1 1/2-year-old boy, but he’s a bitshy, so we’ll introducehim. He lost his homebecause another pet inthe household did notget along with him and he’s feeling a little unsettledabout that. He loves to be brushed (even on his belly)and he’s looking forward to settling down somewherepeaceful where he can relax and be himself. Cooper isvery sleek and with his shiny black fur, extra-pink noseand luminous eyes, he is strikingly handsome. If you’relooking for a friend for life, he would be a great choice.

consistently. And that’s a lot of effort onour part. If we want our kids to do theirhomework every night, we have to checkin on them. We have to actually checktheir work. If we want our dogs to learn“wait” or “stay” or “come”, we have to workwith them – every single day. And if whatyou’re doing isn’t working, you’ve got todo something else.

Call the office if you need the number ofa behavior specialist or if you need tostart with a good old-fashioned puppyobedience class. The bottom line is thatif we want a sane/rational household, weneed family rules and consistent followthrough. We need to be more involved, less dazed, and less confused.
