Magazine ChangesThis magazine has certainly been a pleasure and a chore over the last year but all-in-all, it’s been FUN and it’s given me the

opportunity to meet some amazing people! Our magazine has constantly evolved, we started out simply as

Menu Dining but then added entertainment and late last year weadded the second side which was Gotcha Covered, we had a ton

of people who liked the two-in-one flip magazine but just as manythat didn’t like it, so now we have combined Gotcha Covered and

Menu Dining & Entertainment into one complete magazine -Gotcha Covered.

We are also diligently working on expanding the magazine to cover more more topics, so if there’s something you would like to read or have an article you would like

published give us a call at (318) 219-3187 or email [email protected] for more information.

statue (shown above), designed by Eric Kaposta, was placed on the steps of the auditorium. The sculpture aptly catches Elvis, guitar slung around his neck, hips gyrating and mike stand dancing at his side. And to his left is an equallyimpressive bronze statue of his guitar band mateJames Burton.

A renowned guitarist, James started as a houseguitar player for the Hayride and later became amember of Elvis’ TCB Band. He also was voted oneof the top 100 guitarists of the century.

This summer, James will present his James Bur-ton International Guitar Festival, Aug. 21-23 at theMunicipal Auditorium.

The event, themed “A Tribute to Elvis,” willfeature talent competitions and plenty of live music– including the famed James Burton and FriendsConcert – and much more. The festival was createdto help raise money for the James Burton Founda-tion. The foundation provides music training andguitars to children and young adults in schools, communities and hospitals.

This year, James hopes to break GuinnessWorld Record for the most guitars playing the samesong at the same time.

HEALTH & BEAUTY 11

Our bodies create a tremendous amount of internal heat. We normally cool ourselves by sweating and radiating heat through ourskin. Under certain circumstances, such as unusually high temperatures, high humidity,or vigorous exercise in hot weather, this natural cooling system may begin to fail, allowing internal heat to build up to danger-ous levels. The result may be heat illness, which can come in the form of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke.

Heat CrampsHeat cramps are brief, severe

cramps in the muscles of the legs, arms, or abdomen that may occurduring or after vigorous exercise inextreme heat. The sweating that occurs with vigorous exercise causesthe body to lose salts and fluids. Andthe low level of salts causes the muscles to cramp. Children are par-ticularly susceptible to heat crampswhen they haven't been drinking

enough fluids. Although painful, heat crampsaren't serious.

What to Do:Most heat cramps don't require special

treatment. A cool place, rest, and fluid shouldease your child's discomfort. Massagingcramped muscles may also help.

Heat ExhaustionHeat exhaustion is a more severe heat

illness that can occur when a person in a hotclimate or environment hasn't been drinkingenough fluids. Symptoms may include:

• dehydration• fatigue• weakness• clammy skin• headache• nausea and/or vomiting• hyperventilation (rapid breathing)• irritability

What to Do:• Bring your child indoors or into the shade.• Loosen or remove your child's clothing.• Encourage your child to eat and drink.• Give your child a bath in cool (not

cold) water.• Call your child's doctor for further

advice. • If your child is too exhausted or ill to

eat or drink, intravenous fluids may be necessary.

HeatIllness

Page 12: Gotcha Covered Issue 5

• If left untreated, heat exhaustion may escalate into heatstroke, which can be fatal.

HeatstrokeThe most severe form of heat illness, heatstroke is a life-threatening

medical emergency. The body loses its ability to regulate its own temperature. Body temperature can soar to 106 degrees Fahrenheit(41.1 degrees Celsius) or even higher, leading to brain damage or evendeath if it isn't quickly treated. Prompt medical treatment is required tobring the body temperature under control.

Factors that increase the risk for heatstroke include overdressing and extreme physical exertion in hot weather with inadequate fluid intake.

Heatstroke can also happen when a child is left in, or becomes accidentally trapped in, a car on a hot day. When the outside tempera-ture is 93 degrees Fahrenheit (33.9 degrees Celsius), the temperature inside a car can reach 125 degrees Fahrenheit (51.7 degrees Celsius) injust 20 minutes, quickly raising a child's body temperature to dangerouslevels.

What to Do:Call for emergency medical help if your child has been outside in the

sun exercising for a long time and shows one or more of the followingsymptoms of heatstroke:

• flushed, hot, dry skin with no sweating• temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40.6° Celsius) or higher• severe, throbbing headache• weakness, dizziness, or confusion• sluggishness or fatigue• seizure• decreased responsiveness• loss of consciousness

While waiting for help:• Get your child indoors or into the shade.• Undress your child and sponge or douse them with cool water.• Do not give fluids.

An Ounce of PreventionSome ways you can prevent your child from experiencing heat

illness include:• Teach your child to always drink plenty of fluids before and

during an activity in hot, sunny weather - even if he or she isn't thirsty.

• Make sure your child wears light-colored loose clothing.• Make sure your child only participates in heavy activity outdoors

before noon and after 6 PM.• Teach your child to come indoors immediately whenever he

or she feels overheated. ❖Updated and reviewed by: Steven Dowshen, MD

S.T.Y.L.E.S is for Safety... which annuities offer in spades. Allfixed annuities have guaranteed rates, making sure that no matter what happensin the market, your money is safe. If participating in the gains of the stockmarket is attractive to you, however, equity-indexed annuities offer the poten-tial to participate in the gains, yet still be protected against the losses of thestock market - your premium stays safe, you continue to earn a minimum guar-anteed rate, but market performanceguides your potential gains. Because lifeinsurance companies offer annuities, statelaw and the financial strength of the insurance industry protect your money. The insurance companies that issue themare legal reserve companies, and as suchare required by law to maintain substan-tial reserve funds to meet all their contractual obligations. These companiesare also continually scrutinized by third-

party companies and rated for safety bytrusted names like Standard & Poor's,Moody's, and the industry's leading rating service, A.M. Best, so you canquickly assay the historical stability of aparticular company to enhance yourpeace-of-mind. In many states, annuitiesoften enjoy enhanced protection fromcreditors, as well.

T is for Tax Deferral... which goes hand in hand with com-pound interest. With tax deferral, youdon't pay taxes on your earned interestuntil you use the money. This lets yoursavings grow in three ways: the interestyou earn on your premium, the interestyou earn on your accumulated interest, and the interest you earn on the moneyyou didn't lose to taxes. You may paytaxes on your earned interest eventually, but you'll have built up a substantiallylarger nest egg in the meantime. Tax

deferral puts you in control, letting you choose when to pay those taxes, which is important because it's not justwhat you earn, it's what you keep thatcounts!

Y is for Yield... an arena where annuities consistentlyoutperform CDs and many other taxablesavings plans. Annuities are offered atcompetitive, market-based interest rates, and historically, have offered a 1-2% advantage over CD rates. Demonstrablyhigher yields combined with the benefitsof tax deferral make annuities a best bet for maximizing your accumulation ofretirement savings.

L is for Liquidity... another area where annuities shine because annuities give you access to yourmoney in ways other savings plans don't.Most annuities have withdrawal provi-

Mnemonic devices are used everday, to remember thenames of the presidents, the date of some importanthistorical event, and, now, we can also use them to remind us of the the advantages annuities have to

offer. Annuities have S.T.Y.L.E.

Annuities Have

Page 18: Gotcha Covered Issue 5

sions that provide you withpenalty-free access to some of thevalue in your savings. Most annuities can also be annuitizedpenalty-free at any time (in otherwords, converted into a series ofpayments). Most annuities alsooffer living benefits which can give you access to all or part ofyour money should you becomeconfined to a nursing home, diagnosed with a terminal illness, orunemployed.

E is for Estate Planning Advantages... where annuities allow for immedi-ate transfer of benefits to your designated beneficiaries. Annuitiesaren't subject to the cost, hassle, delay, and lack of privacy of the probateprocess. Also, income taxes on the gainsin your annuity are paid by your benefi-ciary, not by your estate (unless you haveno designated beneficiary, in which caseyour estate is the beneficiary). Annuities

also, if set up properly, allow you a great deal of flexibility in the naming of beneficiaries. You canname your spouse, your children, atrust, or a charity as your beneficiary(and these are just example; the list ofpossible beneficiaries is longer), andany benefit is then taxed according to the tax rate of the beneficiary. Your beneficiaries get their moneyimmediately, and without legal fees

or public scrutiny. What's more, youcan name primary and secondary beneficiaries, so if for any reason yourbeneficiary is no longer in a position to receive funds, the benefits can be immediately transferred to a secondnamed beneficiary, and you can changeyour designated beneficiary at any time.

No other savings plan offers all theseadvantages, and we've only just scratchedthe surface of these topics here. Just keepin mind that annuities have S.T.Y.L.E. ❖

Stephanie: I'm sitting here with Kevin Martin, the singer of CandleBox... First of allI would like to give you props because I noticed on your myspace page that you, theactual band keeps up the page.

Kevin: Yes.

Stephanie: that is very respectable to me. Youseem to be truly into your fans and you havethe understanding that the fans have controlof what they hear on the radio nowadays.

Kevin: Yup.

Stephanie: CandleBox has been makingmusic since 1991, correct?

Kevin: Yes

Stephanie: Well I've got to know, whatmakes and keeps you ticking?

Kevin: Well, I dunno, when you are a musician, it's kind of all you can do. It prettymuch rules your day. I can't tell you howmany times I have woken up at three in themorning with lyrics running through myhead I've had to go out an write them down, you know, in fear of loosing something goodin there... that and lust and love, sex, thattype of stuff...

Stephanie: Amen! (laughs)

Kevin: Definitely the key to the songs that Iwrite

Stephanie: Awareness... I like that.

Stephanie: In your hit entitled Far behind, who was this written about and what wouldyou like to tell your fans about this song orthis person?

Kevin: Well, um, you know for years I didn't tell anyone about this because youdon't want to take something from the audience or listener, but now its... its a songwritten for Andy Wood of Mother LoveBone, and then Malfunksun... so Andy wasa friend and an inspiration and a musical

genius in sound, he just had everything goingfor him but he just couldn't get himselfclean... couldn't stay straight. So that's whatthe song is about... its just kinda like feelingas though I wasn't as good enough or Imaybe didn't take enough time to, uh, reallyhelp him beat that addiction.

Stephanie: Is this your first date on this tour?

Kevin: It is actually. We are doing 10 showsjust to kind of... the record comes out July22nd, so we were like let's hit the south towarm up. We've got some radio shows butwe just... Shreveport, this was booked by thiskid who is Reflections Burn.

Stephanie: Colin.

Kevin: Yea, Colin. He called us up and saidyou want to play a show ? And we were likeyea, sure! We haven't played in Shreveportsince '98.

Stephanie: Right! Since the fair! Speaking ofit being your fourth record release "Into theSun," what influenced the title and what canwe expect from this album?

Kevin: Well the song influenced the title, and the song is about want, desire, need, uhpainful yurning, in a very sexual way, be-

tween a man and a woman or any type of relationship from the sun... it's that kind of athing. So the lyric is always into the sun, wings ablazed, I'm alive, I'm fight. That's thechorus of the song, so, what that kind of represents is really just going as far into thaturge as you can and really feeling it, and notbeing afraid of it. The record kind of feelsthat way as well. The record is a very boldstatement for us. It's been 10 years sincewe've released a record and in that time we'veall grown enormously as musicians and asfriends; our relationships with each other aswell as our relationships with our wifes, ourgirlfriends, our friends, and family... that sortof thing. This record is a real step for us. It'sthe best record we've ever made and that'sthe honest to God truth. I've never reallybeen a fan of any CandleBox records. There'ssongs on the records that I really love but asa whole, as an album, this is the only recordthat I do not skip a single track and I want tolisten to it all the time. I never listened to theCandleBox records. When we were done(recording), I never went back to listen tothem, so... I don't know if that's a good thingor a bad thing...

Stephanie: Well, that's a good thing. Itmeans you are evolving to the point you arecontent with that...

Kevin: Well I guess I was so insecure that Ididn't feel as though we had done it the rightway, and now I feel so strongly about thisrecord that I can listen to it.

Stephanie: I imagine some of the stress to becoming from the record label and how themusic industry was run back then whichbrings me to my next question of the recordlabels and the stressful lifestyles that it lead

you to... I want toask you are youhappy with theway the music in-dustry is now andis there anythingyou are not happyabout?

Kevin: Um, well,I'm happy beingin charge of myown career. Nothaving to answerto a major labeland being con-

cerned whether I'm going to piss them off,but we are signed to a label, as an independ-ent so we are still dealing with those types of,um, uncomfortable relationships , and being exactly what you can say. We do deliver therecord we want to deliver, when we want todeliver it, and we do tour when we want totour, where we want to tour so we are incharge of it in a sense, but CandleBox isn'tstrong enough of a band to go, say what RadioHead does where you just released analbum or Nine Inch Nails where you just released an album, with all the bootlegs. We've never really achieved that type of success. So for us we kind of do need this relationship. It is a necessary evil, but it is onour terms this time.

Stephanie: Right.

Kevin: ...and we don't have any conflictswith anyone at the label where they're not listening or paying attention to us.

Stephanie: Right. Well you are blessed.

Kevin: Yes

Stephanie: Well I would like to thank youvery much for your time and this interview,Shreveport has always been a big fan of CandleBox. Shreveport has a lot of localmusic on its own, and many musicianswould like to pursue their careers, as musicians... what advice do you have for musicians in Shreveport to keep a positive career going for them?

Kevin: Well the hardest thing is being honest with yourself as a musician. That'sfirst and foremost. I mean, I think that youhave to know how to recognize whether or

not what you are doing is absolute horseshit,or if there is something really special there. Ifyou are following in the footsteps of otherbands or trying to sound like other bands, that's horseshit. If you are doing what youwant to do, the way you want to do it, andyou feel passionate about it then that's thehonest reality of what you should be doing. It doesn't mean you are going to succeed, butat least you are being honest because peoplecan smell shit from a mile away, and that'sthe first and foremost thing is be honest withyourself about what you are doing. Secondly,be patient, you know, I have a band I man-age out of Memphis called On a Dead Ma-chine and is one of the greatest bands I'veever heard, you know, and it's been two yearsnow that we've been shopping the guys andhaving them play and there are labels that areinterested and there are labels that aren't interested. These are seriously four of the bestmusicians I've ever enjoyed sharing the stagewith, let alone manage. But sometimes itdoesn't happen. You have to be patient. Youcan't expect it... just because you think it'sgreat doesn't mean that it's gonna hit. Like Isaid, it's a bad thing I like this record somuch, some could think it's absolute horse-shit... but just be honest and be patient, andreally enjoy what you are doing. Be thankfulthat you aren't struggling with some sort ofawful disease or something like that... you'reactually getting to do what you love doing, even if it's not your day job. You have thatoutlet, you have that opportunity to go playin front of people that love what you do andwill come see you play and cheer for you. It'sall about the fans at the end of the day.

Stephanie: It is a blessing! Well thank you somuch Kevin, I appreciate this interview! ❖

Bob Dylan said it best: He who is notbusy being born is busy dying. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Ian Moore lives

and creates by that precept. And his new albumon Justice Records, To Be Loved, vividly displaysthe artistic benefits of doing so.

It’s a way of living that has led Moore fromemerging as, at first glance, a teenage guitarprodigy in the early 1990s in his hometown ofAustin, Texas to fruition as a full-blooded mu-sical artist, now based in Seattle. His rich andkeenly intelligent compositions invoke critics’comparisons to some of the most respectednames in both classic and contemporary rock-’n’roll music. Such musical auteurs as The Bea-tles, Brian Wilson and Big Star on the one hand, and master singer-songwriters such as RichardThompson, Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen andboth Tim and Jeff Buckley on the other hand. Not to mention such diverse creative talents asWilco, The Flaming Lips, Neutral Milk Hoteland even being hailed as a “Roy Orbison for the21st Century.”

Calculate a central point among all of theabove -- but first also throw in early Moore favorites like Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfieldand Sly & The Family Stone as well as TheRolling Stones – and you find an artist who maybe hard to pin down to a certain genre or style. But who cares? There’s a satisfaction in listeningto how Moore absorbs the spectrum of musicthat he loves and finds inspiring and then fol-lows his muse to places that awe, delight and

touch those key, deep places within the humansoul. As Harp magazine observes of Moore,“Since the early ‘90s the native Texan has refusedcorporate molding in favor of freedom and theartistic rewards are staggering.”

It may have been Moore’s guitar talentsthat first won him attention. But as TucsonWeekly recently noted, “His recent albums havepositioned him as one of the most soulfulsinger-songwriters around, and one of the mostdiverse.” Or as Seattle’s influential weekly TheStranger said not long ago, “Your new favoriteartist has arrived.” Similar praise greeted Mooreon his national debut nearly 15 years ago be-cause, for Moore, the path and process to wherehe is going has always been his focus, and it hasconsistently made arriving at each destinationthat much sweeter.

To Be Loved, Moore’s new release on theJustice Records label, follows on the heels of2004’s Luminaria, hailed by All Music Guide ashis “best album by some distance.” To Be Lovedtravels even further along Moore’s musical journey into the mystical realm of what No Depression describes as his “lush pop and soultapestries.”

It’s an album that can truly be described astimeless, mixing in an almost yin/yang fashionboth contemporary and classic sonic experi-mentalism and musical eclecticism alongside thefinest flavors from the rock and pop lexicon.Something of a song cycle, it lyrically visits thoseplaces where love finds us and takes us, as wellas where it is lost and found. Atop a rock solidfoundation of gifted song craftsmanship andeloquent, emotive lyricism, Moore fashions apanorama of musical moods and soundscapes

ranging from spectral beauty to almost punk-ish rock energy, touching on and even mixingtogether many places in between.

To Be Loved both catches the ear at first listen – witness the infectious chorus of “30Days,” the propulsive rocking on “Killing Joke,”and the mesmeric rock/soul groove at the heartof “Civil Light” – and then reveals more of itsdeep riches and delicious intricacies with eachsuccessive spin.

The release of Ian Moore’s Got The GreenGrass in 1999 on his own Hablador Records un-derscored his musical independence in both hiscreativity and career. With each successive release – 2000’s And All The Colors... (Koch In-ternational), the live Via Satellite on Habladorthe following year and Luminaria (Yep RocRecords) – Moore’s devotion to genuine musi-

It’s not just following his muse and aspir-ing to the highest creative standards set by oth-ers that was instilled in Moore all but from birth, but also a sense of artistic fluidity. “One of thethings I always loved about the Beatles is thatthey were incredibly varied and their albumswere all over the place. That to me is what greatpop music is about,” Moore explains. “I wantmy records to be all over the place. I think thatis far more interesting and honest and more inline with being a human being.

“I always like that in other artists: Whenyou take something for granted about someoneand they destroy the very core of what youthought they were about with somethingequally fascinating and appealing,” Moore observes. “You’ve got to try it from a differentangle. You’ve got to see where you can go andswitch stuff up. For me that’s really the joy of it all.”

On To Be Loved, Moore doesn’t just con-tinue to create outside the box — or any boxes, really — but also delved inside the boxes of mu-sical recording to better understand and achievehis artistic goals and spark further creative andintellectual growth. Much of the album wasrecorded at his home studio, equipped with out-

board gear like microphones, preamps andcompressors that he built himself. “It’s been re-ally inspiring to me becauseit’s like getting behind theWizard of Oz’s curtain andunderstanding the processbetter and the physics ofsound. I really got into it onthis record. A lot of thisrecord to me is exploringthe sonic aspects of record-ing and how to make thesedifferent sounds that I havealways loved.”

At the same time, there’s an additional pay-back to learning electronicsand engineering by doing it.“The nature of somethinglike electronics or anything else that challengesyour mind is that it develops your brain in a waythat stimulates different neural pathways. It ba-sically reroutes your brain. It’s harder when youget older, but you can do it. That’s basically whatmy plan was and I feel like it’s happening.”

Then again, it’s been happening for Mooreall along. He enjoys a strong following as a liveperformer, touring both with his band ActionCompany and smaller configurations thereof.

He continues to find sustenance in the musicthat he knows, discovers and also is around him:

for instance, touring withanother once young soulrebel Paul Weller and keep-ing his six-string gun forhire with punk turned rootsmusic insurgent Jon Lang-ford – both, like Moore, areartists marked by wide-ranging and fluid creativity.

“To me, it’s all about thejourney,” Moore concludes. “Yeah, I gothrough a lot of changes. But I think that if I keepdoing this and keep chang-ing all the time, hopefully Iwill enjoy a fan base that

will be upset if I don’t change.” Because he whois not busy... you get the point, right? ❖

It’s an album that cantruly be described as

timeless, mixing in an almost yin/yang fashion

both contemporary and classic sonic

experimentalism and musical eclecticism

alongside the finest flavors from the rock

and pop lexicon.
