INGLEBY BARWICK TOWN COUNCIL REPORT

Making the end easier Few people can fail to have been moved by thevery public last days in the life of actress of LyndaBellingham.

She showed strength, humour and honesty infacing death from the colon cancer which claimedher life. Her wish was to die surrounded by those sheloved and to see a last Christmas with her family.

She died in a hospital, because, said her husband, her condition couldn’t be controlled at home andshe needed medical intervention. For many thatwould be a real sadness. Most of us would wish tobe in familiar surroundings with those we love atthe end of our life.

This wish can be hampered by not knowing who toapproach or just feeling overwhelmed. Familiescan be left feeling they don’t even have the choiceto keep a loved one at home to die.

They are in desperate, sad and unknown territory atthe most traumatic of times – and there isn’t a‘how to’ manual. That’s when the route to hospitalor hospice seems the easiest.

When someone has a terminal illness no one likesto talk about ‘the end’, it can be too painful. Butthere are choices to ensure someone can die athome, without pain and with support for the carersto hand.

Here at Sally and Sarah we offer a palliative end-of-life care service. Our experienced, caring staffwill come and help as much as you need at thisdifficult time.

About Devlin Walker Developments

Devlin Walker Developments (DWD) are a localbuilding company specialising in extensions andrenovations to domestic properties. The company area family run business headed up by brothers Gary andColin and sister Lindsay.

'The service we offer is to understand our client'srequirements and fulfil them within an agreed timeframe, specification and budget. We all know how stressfulthese times can be as we have all undergone work inour homes. We understand the disruption it causes tofamily life, this is why we try to take away all our clientsworries and deal with all aspects of the build/renovationfrom understanding and advising on buildingregulations/planning permission, liaising with the localcouncils as well as liaising with all the trades andkeeping our client up to date with our progress'.

'As a company we have high standards and thesubcontractors we use are handpicked for the quality oftheir workmanship. We have worked with many of themfor years and over that time we have built up an excellentworking relationship and trust them to work on ourbehalf. These trades include, Electrics Plumbing,Plastering, Glazing, Tiling, Coving, Roofing, Excavation,Rubbish Removal and Specialist Carpentry in order forus to offer the complete package. We want our clientsto sit back and watch the transformation take placeknowing that their much-loved home is in safe andcompetent hands.'

That's the company but what about eachof you, you said each of you have your ownarea of expertise what is that expertise?

Lindsay was the first to describe her role in the company' I undertake the Project Management role which meansthat it is my responsibility to ensure that all targets aremet throughout the project. My working backgroundgave me the experience I needed to take on this role asI was Head of Service at a large company based inHartlepool. My role there was to make sure that targetswere met and to offer a first class service to clients oflarge companies within the licensing trade. Included inthat role were many different aspects of service fromproblem solving, accounting, project management tocontract negotiations and reporting.' As the projectmanager I am available to the client at all times todiscuss anything that the client wishes to discussregarding the build or renovation but we also completethe job by doing the internal finishing such as fittingkitchens, flooring, tiling, coving and decorating. Thisway our clients have the peace of mind that they onlyhave to deal with one company and that's us.

How was the company born?

'My husband and I wanted to extend our home as therewould be a new addition to the family. I spoke to mytwo brothers about it and we discussed myrequirements. We then set about planning and thenbuilding the extension. I had the role of project managerand my brothers built it and Devlin WalkerDevelopments was born.'

Colin was next to tell me his role.

'I have been a joiner since leaving school, far too manyyears to say. During my career I have covered allaspects of joinery from fencing and decking tocarpentry. I enjoy the work as every job is different butI will say that I have had some extraordinary requestsover the years, and don't ask, I won't go into details.

My background in joinery was with a large UK basedcompany for many, many years but I also worked formyself doing everything from kitchen fitting, flooring, roofing and fencing. I learned that the company I workedfor was downsizing and redundancies were being madeso with this in mind I decided to take voluntaryredundancy and if I'm honest it was probably the pushI needed to 'go it alone' as it had been on my mind forquite some time.

As Lindsay told you she approached Gary and me aboutbuilding an extension to her home and we decided towork together. With our skill sets we can and are able tocover all bases.'

And by no means least Gary.

'I am the builder within the partnership and went intoapprenticeship at 16 specialising in bricklaying. I movedonto site work for companies such as Bellway homes,Tolent Construction and Mandale Properties on their newdevelopments where I was able to hone my skills. I soongot a reputation and recognition for being 'a goodbrickie'. I was also getting a lot of private work and foundthis more interesting and satisfying as it was much morevaried. I know my trade and enjoy what I do which I thinkis the key to success.

I helped design Lindsay's home extension and asLindsay and Colin have already mentioned we workedon the project together. To be honest it has cometogether at the right time for all of us and we have notlooked back. We have spent a lot of time discussingand agreeing what we, as a company, stand for and whatservice we want to offer. As a collective we all agreethat there is a market out there for a company such asours. We are hardworking, reliable, trustworthy and arepassionate about what we do.'

Finally they pointed out that 'we take pride in ouruniqueness, we don't just want to take out walls andrebuild new ones, we want to get to know the client andtheir home and transform it into the one they alwayswanted.' We take great pride in what we do and workwell together as a family. We want to continue this andlet our knowledge, skill and expertise speak for itself andhelp our clients have a stress free journey to their newhome.'

Services

I asked them what each of them brought to the company to make the success it enjoys today and they explained thata combination of 100% commitment to the projects they take on and their own area of expertise enables them to offera first class service with top quality tradesmen and materials.

What recent success story have you got for a local businesswho received a start-up loan from Five Lamps? Butcher Callum Murray, age 24, earlier this year opened his ownbutchers shop on Yarm High Street. He realised there was agreat opportunity in Yarm for an independent butcher as the lastone had retired over two years ago.

After finding the premises in Yarm, Callum decided to approachFive Lamps ‘s Enterprise team for business advice and support. With no previous business experience, but solid training and

experience as a butcher, Callum needed guidance with all the practical aspects of setting up his own business. He alsoneeded significant financial help to get the venture off the ground. Five Lamps introduced him to the Start-Up Loan scheme,a government backed initiative which not only provides affordable finance to start-ups business but also offers free businessmentoring. We assisted Callum in completing a business plan and successfully secured a Start-Up Loan towards the costsof the shop.

In March 2014, Callum’s dream became a reality when Yarm Butchers opened its doors. Callum said “If it wasn’t for FiveLamps help, I would not have got started. It was a big step to go it alone but I am so glad I did. We source our meat inNorth Yorkshire and we make all our own sausages and burgers “

takes the new Xc60 for a spin

The rear 3 seats have a 40/20/40split design which is extremelyhandy as they fold flat, so slidingobjects in and out is madesimple. The XC60's boot is on thelarge size with 494 litres up to theload cover, which providedadequate room for my son'swheelchair and several suitcases. If loading up to theroofline it increases to 655 litres. When all 3 seats are laid flat thisincreases to 1455 litres, morethan enough room for anyoccasion.

Volvo has always been renownedfor reliability and great buildquality. Something I can reporton in a later issue as my son andI have been invited to the Volvofactory tour in Gothenburg,Sweden. We have been assuredof their attention to detail andquality assurance.

No need to worry aboutexpensive servicing costs as theownership experience is linked toa range of fixed priced servicingdeals, please ask for details.

So the next time your thinking ofbuying an SUV add the XC60 toyour list, I promise you won't bedisappointed.

Next trip Sweden.

Volvo XC60 D5 215bhp AWD SE LUX NAV GEARTRONIC It's been nearly 20 years since I got behind thewheel of a Volvo and I always remember it beingpacked with safety features, some well ahead oftheir time.

Spring forward to October 2014 and something'snever change. The all new 2015 model yearXC60 was more than a memorable experiencepacked full of safety features like 1994. However,it now includes Front and Rear Park Assist withPark Camera, dual stage airbags, traction control, hill descent control and an inflatable curtain forside impacts. One new safety feature is called'Volvo's City Safety System' which willautomatically apply the brakes if it senses acollision and the driver doesn't react in time. itis, however, worth remembering that it onlyworks at speeds under 19mph.

Fuel economy from the 215 bhp diesel D5engine, which is linked to a new 8-speedautomatic gearbox with stop-starttechnology averaged 36.5 mpg on a trip to Yorkand back. Not bad given the range of A and Broads we travelled along. One of the greatadvantages of a Mid Sized SUV is the highdriving position aided with great comfort andvisibility. Talking about supreme comfort andluxury, what better way to enjoy driving than satin the optional extra 'Inscription Pack' perforatedcream leather, sculptured seats, embossed withthe words 'Inscription'. The Panoramic Sunroofprovides a light and airy cabin or with a flick ofa switch, the roof electric blind and rear privacyglass, provide a quiet and relaxing cabin idealfor those who fancy a nap in the extremelyspacious rear cabin, which also provides plentyof rear legroom.
