Gosper County July 2019 4-H News
4-H Fair Exhibit Entry Congratulations on completing your 4-H Enrollment! After completing the
4honline enrollment process, you are enrolled in a 4-H curriculum project
through 4-H Online!
The next step to bring exhibits to the fair is to complete fair pre-entry.
From the projects in which you are enrolled, you will select which exhib-
its you are going to bring to the fair. You will need to use your Fair Pre-
mium Book to determine the exhibits in each project.
In Phelps and Gosper counties, we use a pre-entry for our fair exhibits.
Prior to July 10, you will let us know which exhibits you are planning, or
considering, to bring to the fair.
There are two ways to complete your pre-entry this year!
4-H’ers may use the online process through ShoWorks.
The Phelps web link for ShoWorks is: http://phelps.fairwire.com
The Gosper web link for ShoWorks is: http://gosper.fairmanager.com
Gosper 4-H’ers will receive the paper pre-entry form with this newsletter
mailing. We would prefer it if you used ShoWorks, but know that some
of you need to use the paper copy. Please have it in the office July 10.
Welcome to our new 4-H Staff Member!
Abby Baker is a Fort Hays State University graduate from Parker, Colorado. While in college,
she was a member and officer of the animal science organization, Block and Bridle. Abby grew up
exhibiting swine and poultry projects. She also competed on the Elbert County Livestock Judging
team. Abby lives in Orleans and is extremely excited for this new opportunity in Phelps/Gosper
counties. Abby will serve the community as a 4-H Extension Assistant.

portunity to teach others about the skills they have learned in 4-H by developing
and delivering a "show and tell" presentation. Topics should relate to how 4-H
youth is learning about career and college readiness, community development,
entrepreneurship, food supply confidence, healthy living, leadership develop-
ment, or STEM. Team presentations, consisting of two members, are included.

Calibraska A cool opportunity in Scottsbluff and North Platte! Seven different classes in animation. Eri-ca Larsen-Dockrary, a Nebraska native/UNL grad who is now living in California. Erica is involved in Cali-braska, an effort to connect CA and NE and bring emerging media arts to those who might not otherwise have access. You can find more at: http://www.calibraska.org. There are a number of offerings and noon-time video calls with animators and professionals from Netflix, DreamWorks Animation, CBS, Disney, and more. The kids get swag too. Workshops are primarily multigenerational so if any project leaders/volunteers/etc would like to take a class they can!
Why is herdsmanship important?
Herdsmanship is the first thing the public sees re-
garding how we treat our animals. County Fair is
often the only time the public sees livestock up
close and personal, so we need to make sure they
see how well you care for those animals and their
well-being on a daily basis. This means clean stalls,
clean aisles, clean and healthy animals.
Because many more people see your animal in
the barn than the show ring, exhibitors are expected
to maintain barn, feeding, and grooming conditions
that will insure the good health and safety of the ani-
mals in their care, and will show consideration and
sensitivity toward the public visiting the fair.
All 4-H Clubs and Independent 4-H Members exhibiting
livestock will be judged on Herdsmanship.
Herdsmanship will be judged Thursday-Friday Herdsmanship will be judged between 8 a.m. and 8
p.m. There will be no judging of species during its show
Fair Entry Day Sack Lunches The American Legion Auxiliary will offer Entry Day Sack Lunches for our 4-H families on Wednesday, July 24 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Legion Hall. Use the west door of the Civic Center to gain access to the back door of the Legion Hall.

New State Fair Poultry
Showmanship and the Table Show (judging of the birds) will be at the same time this year. Starts at 9 am on Saturday August 31st
Duck and Goose Classes still exist but there will no longer be a champion or reserve duck and goose, rather They’re now combined into “Waterfowl”
No Turkeys this year
The families can nominate 10 individual birds by that August 10th deadline. This is similar to the rabbits. They have to pay for those 10 birds but may only show 5.
Substitutions can only be made within the class. So for instance, A large chicken may only be substitut-ed for another large chicken, etc. This is due to the cage size requirements for the chickens. Those substituted birds must be nominated first though.
The kids are only allowed to bring 1 dozen eggs total. Not 1 dozen of each color.
The Nebraska State Fair The Nebraska State Fair is held each year at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Grand Island, Nebraska.
This year's event will be held August 23 - September 2, 2019. Visit the Nebraska 4-H State Fair Fair-
book for information about 4-H static and animal exhibits, as well as 4-H in-person contests and competi-
tions happening at the State Fair. Additional information and resources are also available for individuals
interested in exhibiting 4-H live animals, participating in 4-H contests, volunteering with 4-H, and judging 4
-H exhibits.
All in person State Fair Exhibits must be entered into the State Fair System by August 10.
