The Supposed Poisoning Case - The Inquest - (From our own Correspondent) - Dr Wilford, coroner, and a jury, of whom Mr Wm. Cranmer was chosen foreman, held an inquest yesterday, at the Railway Hotel, Upper Hutt, touching the death of Alice Gorrie, who died suddenly, at Whiteman's Valley, on the afternoon of Sunday last. Constable Mackay attended on behalf of the police.

Thomas Gorrie, father of the deceased, deposed as follows - My daughter was ill for some time. I frequently saw her spit blood. She generally went to Wellington on Saturdays to do business, and she went as normal on Saturday last, apparently in perfect health. She generally rode on horseback to the railway station, taking about 20lbs of butter with her. She took no breakfast that morning that I am aware. I told her to get something to eat at an accommodation house when she got into town. She got back about sundown. I took the saddle and bridle off the horse, her sister saying she (Alice) was not well. She was accustomed to milk three or four cows, but only 'milked one on this occasion, as she complained of being unwell, so I advised her to go to bed, which she did about 7 o'clock, taking no tea, but she had had a cup of cocoa at her brother's previously. I heard again about 3 am from her sister that she was bad. I got up and made a fire, as she complained of being cold, and feeling great pain in the stomach. I went to fetch her brother, who lives about two miles off, to go for the doctor. When I got back she was insensible. She did not regain consciousness, but became convulsed about 2 pm, and died shortly afterward. Isabella Gorrie, sister of deceased, deposed - My sister had complained of being ill for some time, though quite able to go about her work. On Saturday last she said she was not well, and wished she had not to go to town. She took no breakfast before starting for town, as she had not time. She returned about 5 pm, and said she was very bad. She said she had some milk and a bun in town. I asked her to have some tea but she would not have any, and, after milking one cow, she went to bed. The next thing I heard of her was at about 3 am, when she woke me, saying she was very bad, I made a fire, and gave her a cup of tea, and put a little pain killer in it. She got worse so I went for her father and he left and fetched her brother up. About 7 she began to get unconscious, not speaking again. She became convulsed about 2 pm, and died shortly afterward. Deceased was always very hysterical. Mary Gorrie, sister-in-law of deceased, said deceased complained of being unwell lately. On her way from town last Saturday, she called at my house, and complained of a pain in her stomach and feeling very sick asked her to have something to eat, but she refused, saying she had some milk and some cakes in town one of the latter she gave to my little boy, who ate it. She appeared in good spirits, and went off home to milk. Her father came down early in the morning to ask my husband to take her to the doctor. Got the horse and trap ready, but her sister Bella came down to say she was too bad to go. Went up to see her, and found her insensible, remaining so until she died. Deceased was in the habit of getting milk to drink when she went to town, but I do not know where she got it. Jane Robinson, sister of deceased, said deceased was in the habit of getting milk when she went to town. Lost Saturday fortnight she went into town with deceased, who had a glass of milk at Towsey's. On the way back from town she vomited. Deceased was often sick after drinking milk. Deceased was in the habit of getting milk to drink at Towsey's. Wm. Borrowdate Tripe, duly qualified medical practitioner, of Wellington, said he had that day made a post mortem examination of the body of Alice Gorrie, and found congestion of brain, left lung, and stomach. The stomach was nearly empty, containing only a small quantity of dark fluid. From the general appearances, and also from the examination of certain other parts of the body, he was of opinion that there would be vomiting, unconsciousness, and convulsions immediately prior to death. He was perfectly satisfied that death was due to congestion of the brain, most likely produced by obstruction. He was quite satisfied that there was not the slightest symptom of any poisoning. Constable Mackay stated that, on hearing of the death, he went over to Whiteman's Valley to the house of Mr Thomas Gorrie, and found the body there lying in the bed. He searched the bedroom, but found nothing to throw any light on the cause of death. He found a bag with a cake, which deceased had brought out of town also some lollies, a bottle of painkiller, and some salts and senna. He had the body removed to where it now

lay. He found nothing to arouse his suspicion. The jury returned a verdict of Death from Natural Causes.

The bride who was given away by her father was attended by her cousin Ruth Robinson (chief) and her sister Ira Geange as bridesmaid. The brothers of the bride Wallace and Arthur were best man and groomsman respectively. The brides dress was of Duchess Satin trimmed with swandown and pearls her veil being beautifully embroidered (the work of Mrs Sykes). The chief bridesmaid wore cream voile and the junior cream silk. A reception was held at the residence of the parents of the bride after the ceremony. The presents were numerous and valuable. The bridegroom’s present to the bride was a gold necklet set with garnet and pearls to the chief bridesmaid a gold French cable bangle and to the assistant bridesmaid a gold chain and pearl pendant. The newly wedded couple left for Christchurch on their honeymoon. Petitioner James Johnson a platelayer, employed on the Government railways sought dissolution of his marriage with Sarah Jane Johnson, formerly Sarah Jane Robinson, on the ground of misconduct with one Edward Benge, a farmer residing at Upper Hutt. Petitioner claimed £501 damages from correspondent. The impropriety, upon which as a charge, the petitioner relied, was alleged to have taken place on the 19th January last, at Upper Hutt. Cross-examination of petitioner's witnesses was directed to show that the petitioner had had monetary dealings with co-respondent, in regard to the purchase of stock, and had offered to overlook the wrong that had been done to him in the matter of co-respondent's relationship with respondent on payment to petitioner by co-respondent of £275. The case for the co-respondent is in every respect a denial of all the more serious and material allegations of petitioner, and a denial that any incriminating admissions had been made in the matter. From what we have been able to ascertain up to the present, it appears that the deceased, whose age and Christian name have not transpired here, paid a visit to the city on Saturday last, and on returning home complained of being sick. She at once went to bed, and during the night called out that she was dying. She expired shortly afterward. From the symptoms, Dr Wilford, who was called in, is of opinion, we understand that death resulted from poisoning. Constable Mackay proceeded to Whiteman's Valley at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon to prosecute enquiries into the mysterious affair, of which the foregoing are the whole of the particulars that could be gleaned up to the time of writing. An inquest was to be held at Cranmer's Hotel, Upper Hutt, at noon to-day, where also the post mortem examination was to take place. Up to a couple of years ago, Mr Gorrie enjoyed excellent health, but about the time mentioned suffered from a stroke of paralysis, and has been slowly failing since then. His end, however, came somewhat suddenly. He had another stroke on Saturday morning, and on the advice of his medical man, was removed to a nursing home in O’Rorke Street. He gradually sank and died at 2 am to-day. The deceased was born at the Bay of Islands in 1840, being a son of one of the first settlers in the Colony, Mr. William Gorrie, who subsequently carried on business in Shortland street. The late Mr Gorrie was educated of his uncle's College, and from there went, to Messrs Brown and Campbell's office, where he remained for a number of years. In 1870, with his brother-in-law (Mr J H Upton) the deceased started the well-known firm of Upton and Co., Queen Street, in which be continued an active partner up to his death. Mr Gorrie served for years as a member and also chairman of the City Schools Committee, then was elected to the Board of Education, of which body he also became chairman. He was prominent in chess tournaments, and an enthusiastic bowler, being a familiar figure on the Auckland greens. He was one of the first members of the Auckland Bowling Club, and was president of the Association. Mr Gorrie took a great interest in raining, and at the time of his decease was a director of quite a number of gold mining companies, and also of the Union Ltd and Candle. Mr Gorrie is survived by his widow, three sons and three daughters. Another son, who went to South Africa in a New Zealand contingent, died of enteric fever just outside Pretoria.
