FREEDOM WITHIN AFRAMEWORK OF FAITH
ASK QUESTIONS. BUILD FAITH. BRING HOPE.
FREEDOM TO ASK QUESTIONS
FREEDOM TO BUILD FAITH
Gordon College values freedom. Freedom to ask challenging questions, probe new ideas and discover your calling. This freedom is deeply rooted in our faith in Christ—and it comes with the responsibility to live with integrity, grow in wisdom, and love God and our neighbor.
What awaits you at Gordon? It’s a community with a vision for excellence and a spirit of grace. Here, in this magnificent location, you will grow with friends and professors who have hearts eager to serve—and minds free to imagine new possibilities for hope.
Read on and we’ll show you what we’re talking about . . .
FREEDOM WITHIN A FRAMEWORK OF FAITH
MAKING VOICES HEARD
Elementary and special education alumnus; pursuing a Ph.D. in special education at Pennsylvania State University
SAM SENNOTT ’04
Sam’s dream of giving voice to the voiceless began when, as a volunteer, he cared for babies with cerebral palsy and adults with developmental disabilities. A few years later Sam and a colleague created a communications application for the iPhone that can revolutionize the way autism, stroke, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and Lou Gehrig’s patients live.
“THERE IS SO MUCH TO LEARN ABOUT HOW TO ASSIST PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. THE FIELDS
OF EDUCATION AND UNIVERSAL DESIGN ARE ENDLESS.”
JIM BELCHER ’87Political studies alumnus; author of Deep Church, one of Christianity Today’s top books for 2009
Founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, California, Jim believes there is a third way between traditional and emerging models of the church. He hopes his recent book, Deep Church, will play a part in bringing greater unity to the Body of Christ.
DEEPCHURCH
Cassie is in her second year of a Ph.D. program in environmental chemistry at Harvard, on full scholarship. Recently Cassie and a team of researchers received a patent for a chemical process to cut carbon emissions in large-scale industrial processes. She hopes it will prove to be a substantial contribution to the effort to clean up industry.
CHEMIST WITH A CONSCIENCE
CASSIE FREYSCHLAG ’08
Biblical and theological studies, and chemistry alumna
“AT GORDON I WAS ESTABLISHED FIRMLY IN MY FAITH BECAUSE I WAS GIVEN THE SUPPORT TO ASK QUESTIONS.”
Theatre and English alumna; performing arts director at the YMCA of the North Shore, Beverly, Massachusetts
KIM KURCZY ’08
THE PLAY’STHE THING
What Kim learned from her professors—coupled with substantial time abroad—led to writing, producing and
performing her own play, Mzungu Memoirs, based on her time in Africa. It was great preparation for what she’s
doing now: developing and implementing a large-scale theatre program that spans six YMCA branches and
affects hundreds of youth.
GREEN MAN
As a pioneer in green chemistry, Professor Irv Levy has coedited a book* on chemical processes that are beneficial for human health and the environment. When he’s not educating students at the Boston Museum of Science or organizing national conferences on green chemistry, you might find him with his students in our organic chemistry lab making clean biofuel from used vegetable oil.
IRV LEVY
Professor of chemistry and computer science, chair of American Chemical Society’s Chemical
Education Division, founding member of the Green Chemistry Education Network
“OUR STUDENTS TAKE THEIR RESEARCH IN GREEN CHEMISTRY TO A NEW LEVEL AND ARE TEACHING OTHERS AT NATIONAL CONFERENCES.”
*Green Chemistry Education: Changing the Course of Chemistry (Oxford University Press, 2009)
STEPHEN SMITHProfessor of economics and business
IF BUSINESS IS YOUR TICKET, GORDON’S YOUR JETDr. Stephen Smith is a Stanford-trained economist with a passion for the economics of global poverty. Besides leading study groups through China, Smith heads a department that prepares students for visionary leadership in business. After solid coursework and personalized internships, graduates offer creative and pragmatic contributions to organizations as varied as World Vision, GE, Americorps and Comcast.
“GORDON IS A SERIOUS INTELLECTUAL COMMUNITY THAT’S
ALSO SERIOUSLY CHRISTIAN.”
SHE PLAYS IN A THOUSAND PLACES
Though her home base is Gordon—as artist-in-residence and professor of piano—Dr. Mia Chung’s audience spans the world, from Carnegie Hall to Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Tonga and the former Soviet Union. The New York Times has called her “dazzling”; students call her a professor who helps them connect the creative process with tradition and with the goodness and beauty of God.
