Choosing the right stove....................All of our stoves are of a high quality and would be expected to last formany years when used and cared for properly. Since a stove is likely to bea focal point in your home for such a length of time it is important to makean informed decision to ensure you choose the right one.

There are several points to consider before choosing and installing a stove:

It is important to choose a stove with the correct heat output for the area inwhich it is to be installed as they burn at their cleanest and most efficientwhen they are burning well. Choosing a stove that is too small can lead toover firing which will damage firebox components whilst burning a largestove with the dampers constantly closed in an attempt to cut heat outputwill cause dirty and inefficient burning of the fuel. You can work out roughlywhat size stove you require using this rule of thumb.

This calculation will give you a rough maximum heating requirement figurein kilowatts which will assist in choosing a stove. Most stoves are ratedtowards the top end of their maximum output. The figure can be increasedwhere rooms are poorly insulated, exposed or have adjoining staircases oropen plan areas.

There are many different designs of stove, each with unique burningtechnologies employed within them. Most of the stoves currently on themarket employ one or more of 4 main technologies.

– The simplest stoves will allow air into thecombustion chamber through a single control on the stove.The amount of air let into the firebox will control the rate ofburning.

– When burning wood air needs toenter the firebox above the fuel bed to avoid over-cooling ofthe wood ash. This is commonly combined with an air washsystem on stoves with a glass window which directs air downthe glass in order to prevent excessive staining from the fuel.

– A more effective method for keepingthe stove glass clean is achieved by bringing air throughducts in the stove which pre-heats it before directing it downthe glass window. The heated air discourages condensationon the glass.

– Tertiary burning systems inject air into the fireboxaround the top of the flame path in order to burn off theexcess gasses rising from the fuel bed. This adds to the stovesefficiency as well as creating an attractive flame pattern inthe firebox.

Cast iron? Steel? or Convector?

Installation

Aesthetics

Good quality cast iron is frequently used in stove manufacture as it isstrong and easily molded to create attractive designs. It also has animpressive capacity for retaining heat meaning excellent heatconvection.

Sheet steel is also a frequently used material. Steel bodied stoves donot distribute their heat in quite the same way as cast iron stoves butdo tend to be more resistant to corrosion and cheaper tomanufacture. Although steel won’t hold heat in the same way castiron will, steel stoves will heat up quicker.

Convector stoves incorporate air channels in the outer skin of thestove. As the air in these channels is heated by the firebox, it rises,pulling cold air up from below. This results in an increased flow of air around the room heatinglarger and adjoining areas more effectively. The outer skin of the stove will also remain cooler thannormal radiant stoves meaning convector stoves can often be placed slightly closer tocombustible materials and furniture.

The proper installation of any stove is vitally important and will in most cases account for a largepart of the overall budget. Flue pipes, linings and components need to be well manufacturedusing high quality materials in order to withstand years of high temperatures and acid erosion. Forthis reason they are all fairly expensive.

We have carefully chosen what components we stock based on their cost andperformance. All items are of a high quality but we can pass on discounts negotiatedwith our suppliers meaning we can sell at very competitive prices.

In order to give the best possible price we offer free advice and detailed estimatesfor all our installations. Treating each installation separately assists us in foreseeingproblems and providing accurate estimates.

There are many different stove designs available in all sorts of differentcolours and finishes. As a focal point in any room it is of course importantto choose a stove which you like the look of and which suits its surroundings.

This pricelist includes pictures to give a good idea of what different designsof stove are available. Further details on the stoves can be found from themanufacturers brochures which are available on request.

Hot water, central heating & solar...........................The constant threat of rising oil and gas pricesare pushing many people to alternative, moreenvironmental forms of heating. Theadvantages of a stove as a space heater areobvious but it can also make good sense toutilise some of the heat for domestic hot waterand / or radiators.

There are a lot of good stoves available withdifferent boiler sizes meaning there is nearlyalways one to suit.

Choosing a suitable stove

Solar water heating

If you are looking use you stove to heat some hot water there are many models which offer clip in boilersas optional extras. For central heating applications there are some excellent integral boiler stovesespecially designed for the purpose.

Below is some of our best advice for you to consider when choosing a boiler model stove:

- Adding a boiler into a stove of course means some heat will be taken away to the water so it wontgive as much heat out to the room as a dry stove of a similar size. So be sure to pick a stove with asuitable output to keep you warm during those winter months!

- There are some important practical aspects to consider when connecting a stove to hot watersystems. You will need a hot water cylinder if you don’t already have one and it will need to be abovethe fire, within around 5 metres horizontally in order for the water to circulate freely. If you are currentlyon a ‘combi’ boiler system there are ways of linking in.

- If you already have a central heating system and want to use it in conjunction with a boiler stove youcan do! Thermal store cylinders offer the best method of doing this although there are other devicesavailable such as neutralizers.

- Try and estimate as accurately as possible how much heat you will require from the boiler. mosthouseholds will require between 8,000 and 10,000btu’s for domestic hot water.

The addition of solar panels to a solid fuel heating system makesperfect sense! Harnessing the suns energy to give you hot waterduring the summer months will mean there’s no need to useexpensive electric immersions or your traditional gas or oil boiler.

Installation and advice..............................................Woodburning and multifuel Stoves are perfectly safe forms of heating when used and cared for correctly.It is however very important that your stove is installed correctly to avoid fire risk and risk of carbonmonoxide poisoning. Because of the potential dangers involved it is currently against the law to install anew solid fuel appliance without having it signed off by a qualified HETAS engineer or the local CountyCouncil.

We have a dedicated HETAS registered installation and servicing team operating in Pembrokeshire andthe surrounding area. Our expert advice is free to anybody who needs it and we have a range of servicesavailable.

Below is a list of jobs we typically undertake. All installation prices are intended as a rough guide to thecosts of an installation including all flue components, registration fees and VAT.

Stove installation in to an existing suitable flue: £200 - £400 approx

Connecting a stove to an existing or newly installed flue will typically require flue pipe andvarious adaptors to ensure an air tight connection. We will have to confirm the flue’ssuitability and installation costs will vary depending on what components are required.

Stove installation with stainless steel flue lining: £600 - £900 approx

Older stone or brick flues will typically require lining for use with a stove toavoid fume escape into the property. The simplest method of lining a flue is touse a stainless steel flexible flue lining. All our linings and fittings are tried andtested and of an extremely high quality.

Installation using 316g flue lining (10-20 years lifespan): £800.00 approxInstallation using 904g flue lining (15-30 years lifespan): £900.00 approx

Flue liner insulation: £300 approxInsulation a flue liner will increase performance when you are lighting your fire andincrease rigidity meaning less movement during sweeping which can increase lifeexpectancy.

Twin walled flue systems: £1,000 - £2,000 approx

No chimney? No problem! Twin walled flue systems can run up through a houseor out and up an external wall allowing you to have a stove installed where thereis no existing flue. Our twin walled flue system is one of the highest quality andneatest systems currently available on the UK market. Prices will vary drasticallydepending on what components are required.

Chimney cleaning: From £35

Our expert sweeping service is clean and efficient and we offer discounts for additionalsweeps in the same house or street.

Solar water heating systems: from £2,000!
