Introduction The primary purpose of this GFA special issue is to publish the transcripts of church records of Glastonbury First Congregational parish (1759-1791), which are compiled at the end of the issue. In early 2012, I researched lands near South Glastonbury in order to locate the 50 acre farm my 5-great-grandfather Stephen4 Goodrich (William3, Ephraim2, William1; LWC 136), bought from Richard Fox on 23 Apr 1759.1 In the process, the Historical Society of Glastonbury recalled that Stephen’s wife Dorothy _____ was named as a daughter of Thomas and Mary (Hopson) Treat in one of their local house histories. I took a trip to Glastonbury to investigate and saw at the Historical Society baptismal and death record transcripts of Glastonbury First Congregational parish from 1759-1791, during the pastorate of Rev. John Eells, who died on 17 May 1791. Coincidentally, I first saw the transcripts 17 May 2012, the day 221 years after Rev. Eells died. And though the house history citation for Dorothy could not be found, the death transcript for Mary (Hopson) Treat reveals she died on 24 Dec 1786; just two days later Stephen and Dorothy sold their farm and homestead to their son Stephen and his father-in-law, Joseph Bidwell2 and moved to Middlebury, Vermont.3 The transcripts have resolved 3 tombstone mysteries and have also helped in sorting through what are at times conflicting sources of genealogical information. According to the death transcripts, the only children of Stephen4 and Dorothy Goodrich who

died in Connecticut before the family moved to Middlebury, Vermont by early 17873 were: Martha5 (#390 in The Goodrich Family in America4 [hereon: LWC 390]; d. 15 Aug 1760) and Stephen5 (LWC 391; d. 24 Aug 1760), likely victims of the 1760 smallpox epidemic,5 and Mabel5 (LWC 396; d. 03 Jan 1770). Rachel5 (LWC 397) and Mary5 (LWC 398) had no death record and no further published details. Rachel is now recognized as the burial next to Hannah (Reynolds-Story-Smalley) Goodrich, the second wife of Captain Stephen4 Goodrich, buried next to Stephen and his first wife Dorothy in Seeley Cemetery, Middlebury, Vermont. Mrs. Rachel Smalley, wife of Alfred Smalley, who d. May 31 1796 in the 26th year of her age, whose burial in the Goodrich family plot seemed puzzling since there was no known relation between the Smalley and Goodrich families, appears to be a good fit for Rachel5 Goodrich, who was baptized on 26 Nov 1770 and so was in the 26th year of her age as of 31 May 1796.

The tombstone inscription of Lois (Bidwell) Goodrich in Howell Cemetery, Summerhill, Cayuga, New York: Lois, wife of Stephen Goodrich, d. 16 Jul 1832 Æ 68 y. 4 m. 14 d.,6 consistent with birthdate 02 Mar 1764, agrees closely with her baptismal date: 04 Mar 1764.

In addition to the baptisms of all children of Stephen4 and Dorothy Goodrich who were born in 1760-1774, there were baptisms of children of Stephen5 and Lois (Bidwell) Goodrich born in 1783-1790, excepting my 3-great-grandfather Josiah6 Goodrich (b. 1793), baptized during the pastorate of Rev. William Brown (1770-1854), of which no records have been found.

In many cases the baptisms were on the Sunday after birth. Non-Sunday baptisms, indicated with date in italics, were often done in private, sometimes at a lecture in the home of a parishioner. The home of Stephen4 and Dorothy Goodrich was the site of a private lecture and baptisms of neighborhood children in southeast Glastonbury at least five times.

A tabular summary of LWC Goodrich entries with baptismal and death transcripts (Tr) vs. LWC birth and death dates is shown in a format inspired by the forthcoming new Goodrich genealogy, which is planned to be sourced fully for both Goodrich paternal and maternal ancestral lines. Submissions of records and family genealogies for the new genealogy are greatly appreciated.

Goodrich family records to the year 1900 cover more than 400 years in worldwide locations. And though these 1759-1791 transcripts cover just 32 years in a single town, they produce: 39 instances in which a published LWC date of birth is revealed to have been a baptism date.

At least a day to a year or more could elapse from birth to baptism. A large apparent birth-baptism gap also arises if the recorded birth and unrecorded baptism and death of a first child preceded a child with the same first name with an unrecorded birth and a recorded baptism.

13 instances in which a published date of birth or death for a person with no apparent unknown siblings is in conflict, besides the two daughters of William4 Goodrich (LWC 135).

3-6(?) instances in which a child with a published LWC date of birth is revealed to have been a child who died in infancy and apparently had a younger sibling of the same first name who was not recorded in the transcripts and survived to adulthood. At least two possibilities for this phenomenon include Asa5 Goodrich (LWC 446) and Jesse5 Goodrich (LWC 447).

1 instance in which Luther5 Goodrich (LWC 420), b. 28 Sep 1776, m. Freedom Bidwell on 10 Dec 1789 at age 13. The groom was Luther5 (Joshua4; LWC 120), b. abt. 1766; he and siblings Grace, Prudence, Honor, and Honor are not in The Goodrich Family in America.38

1 instance, Thomas3 Goodrich (LWC 49), of a death date missing in Goodrich genealogies. A number of images of highlight transcript records are now presented with discussion.

Introduction to Baptismal Transcripts. Pastorate of Rev. John Eells (1759-1791); preceded by Rev. Ashbel Woodbridge (1728-1758);39 succeeded by Rev. William Brown (1792-1797).40 All three were Yale graduates.41 Rev. Brown (1770-1854), a native of Tiverton, RI, studied law and practiced in New York at Catskill (1802-1811) and Auburn (1811-1832); he died in Brooklyn.40

Transcription Errors(?): Samuel4 Goodrich (Thomas3, Ephraim2); (LWC 159) and Others. His tombstone states his date of death was 25 Oct 1777; the transcription states 23 Oct 1777. This may or may not have been a transcription error in which the number 5 was mistaken for 3. Another 5 vs. 3 issue is Martha5 Goodrich (Stephen4), (LWC 395) whose published date of birth is 05 May 1767;43 baptized 03 May 1767 (shown below). Her brother Stephen5 (LWC 391) died on 24 Aug 1760 at age 23 months in the transcripts. If this is true, and “20” was not mistaken for “23,” he was born in Sep 1758 rather than 25 Dec 1758,44 which could be his date of baptism.

Private Joseph Bidwell was taken prisoner at the Battle of Long Island on 27 Aug 1776 during the Revolutionary War in the 7th Company of Captain Samuel Welles45 in the 2nd Battalion of Colonel Fisher Gay in Wadsworth’s Brigade.46 Who was this Joseph Bidwell? According to a footstone found in Still Hill Cemetery in South Glastonbury he was my 5-great-grandfather Joseph4 (Nathaniel3, Samuel2, John1) of Glastonbury, who was father of Lois Bidwell, wife of my 4-great-grandfather Stephen5 Goodrich (Stephen4); (LWC 392). According to DAR 239662, he was Joseph5 (Joseph4, John3, John2, John1) of East Hartford. In the death transcripts he is revealed to be: Joseph5 (Ephraim4, Ephraim3, Joseph2, John1) of Glastonbury, who died on his return from captivity in New York on 12 Jan 1777. Joseph died in Milford, Connecticut of smallpox; his father Ephraim contracted smallpox in caring for him and died on 14 Feb 1777.47

Death transcript of Joseph Bidwell, taken captive in New York at the Battle of Long Island. He died on 12 Jan 1777 on his return from captivity. His father was Ephraim Bidwell, who died just 33 days later on 14 Feb 1777. The footstone shown above marks the grave of a different Joseph Bidwell (1726-1796), son of Nathaniel, in Still Hill Cemetery in South Glastonbury.

William6 Goodrich (Stephen5); (LWC 1050) bp. Sunday, 02 Jan 1791; LWC b. 28 Nov 1790.

His 3 siblings born in 1783-1788 each have their baptism date published as their LWC birthdate. His LWC birthdate, 28 Nov 1790, is also the next date above his 02 Jan 1791 baptism. This may be coincidental, yet it is possible that the LWC researcher recorded the wrong baptism date.

Binder that Contains the Glastonbury 1st Society (1759-1791) Parish Record Transcripts. The book enclosed has baptismal and death transcripts for Glastonbury 1st Society (1759-1791) and Eastbury 2nd Society (1769-1816). Copies of Glastonbury marriage records (13 Mar 1760 to 12 Sep 1790) were found in the belongings of William S. Goslee, Esq. after his death in 1892 and published in 1906 by Rev. Frederic Bailey in Early Connecticut Marriages Prior to 1800 with a record gap (12 Sep 1790 to 04 Oct 1797) during the pastorate of Rev. William Brown.48 Yet the binder spine indicates First Society (1793-1889). Do 1793-1889 transcripts also exist? A brief biography of Glastonbury First Society schoolteacher Thomas Matson (1712-1802), in a genealogy published in 1917, cited 1713-1757 Glastonbury First Congregational parish records then held at the Williams Soap Factory in Glastonbury.49 The Historical Society of Glastonbury received the company’s records in 1960; University of CT-Storrs received them in May 1967.50 The biography cited parish transactions; it is not known if parish vital records existed in 1917. Any assistance or leads in tracking down lost records are also helpful and greatly appreciated. Compiled Transcripts of Glastonbury First Congregational Parish: 1759-1791 Goodrich transcripts are shown first, followed by full parish transcripts. First name and surname spellings are standardized for electronic searching; original spellings are in the written trancripts.

Benefits of Membership in the Goodrich Family Association Members make possible the Goodrich Family Association community. Your membership defrays the costs of maintaining our website, scanning new records received into our huge database, and compiling the new Goodrich genealogy as well as other information which is projected to appear on our future Members Only site. With the support of our members, we are able to provide additional services such as access to our genealogist and our DNA Goodrich Surname project. The Goodrich Family Association maintains a presence on a number of subscription databases. We continually search for new Goodrich information, and records to prove it, such as NEHGS, Connecticut Society of Genealogists, Virginia Genealogical Society, Illinois State Genealogical Society, and others enabling us access to new and verified information to assist our members. Goodrich Family Association members can request the Association number to take advantage of special discounted pricing for the acclaimed FGS (Federation of Genealogical Societies) Forum magazine, which includes research information, news in brief, state and historical society news, book reviews, and advertises the most complete calendar of genealogical events published anywhere. Our NGS organizational membership (National Genealogical Society) serves to widen the bases we touch in our search for Goodrich information; the more we obtain, the more Goodrich researchers we are able to assist.

We have, as a community, built an organization to provide excellent support to those who research Goodrich and variant spellings of the name. But we can’t do it alone. We need every member, all our volunteers, fresh ideas, and new visions to pursue. We need YOU!

It may be the love of noble deeds,

Perchance ‘tis pride, but he who reads

Of these who did and dared and died –

Then be it love or be it pride,

There is a link that seems to hold

Us bound to ancestors of old.
