The Ministry of the Word

Blessing the BackpacksAs another school year begins, let us pray. For all who are going back to school this fall. For students, teachers, administrators, staff, custodians, bus drivers, coaches, room parents, school board members... For all who teachand all who learn and all whose labors make teaching and learning possible. We give you thanks, loving God.

For all who do not have access to quality education. For children who live on the streets orsleep on neighbors’ couches. For children who go to school hungry and get no help withtheir homework. For children whose classroom is the shade of a tree and who walk miles for a drink of water. For teachers who are paid poorly or not at all.Give us courage to work for change, loving God.

Everyone is invited to hold up their backpack or book-bag as Holy Water is sprinkled.God of Wisdom, we give you thanks for schools and classrooms and for the teachers andstudents who fill them each day. We thank you for this new beginning, for new books andnew ideas. We thank you for sharpened pencils, pointy crayons, and crisp blank pageswaiting to be filled. We thank you for the gift of making mistakes and trying again. Help usto remember that asking the right questions is often as important as giving the right answers.

Today we give you thanks for these your children, and we ask you to bless them withcuriosity, understanding and respect. May their backpacks be a sign to them that they haveeverything they need to learn and grow this year in school and in Sunday School. May theybe guided by your love. All this we ask in the name of Jesus, who as a child in the templeshowed his longing to learn about you, and as an adult taught by story and example yourgreat love for us. Amen.

The rest of the congregation is invited to stand and pray:May Jesus, who calls us each by name to follow him, give you the courage andconfidence to be his disciples wherever you may be, at school, at work, and at home.May the gifts God has given you be a source of blessing for you and for others. Amen.

The Collect of the DayThe Lord be with you.

Page 3: Goodness is Stronger Than Evil · Gathering Song Goodness is Stronger than Evil words by Desmond ... If they are red as crimson, they will become like wool. If you agree and obey,

And also with you.Let us pray.Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

1st Lesson Please be seated Isaiah 1:1, 10-20The vision about Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah, Amoz’s son, saw in the days of Judah’s kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Hear the Lord’s word, you leaders of Sodom. Listen to our God’s teaching, people of Gomorrah! What should I think about all your sacrifices? says the Lord. I’m fed up with entirely burned offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts. I don’t want the blood of bulls, lambs, and goats. When you come to appear before me, who asked this from you, this trampling of my temple’s courts? Stop bringing worthless offerings. Your incense repulses me. New moon, sabbath, and the calling of an assembly— I can’t stand wickedness with celebration! I hate your new moons and your festivals. They’ve become a burden that I’m tired of bearing. When you extend your hands, I’ll hide my eyes from you. Even when you pray for a long time, I won’t listen. Your hands are stained with blood. Wash! Be clean! Remove your ugly deeds from my sight. Put an end to such evil; learn to do good. Seek justice: help the oppressed; defend the orphan; plead for the widow. Come now, and let’s settle this, says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be white as snow. If they are red as crimson, they will become like wool. If you agree and obey, you will eat the best food of the land. But if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword. The Lord has said this. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 23 All sing the refrain after the choir or cantor, where indicated.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. Refrain.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Refrain.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

PSALM 23Easter 4C

Page 4: Goodness is Stronger Than Evil · Gathering Song Goodness is Stronger than Evil words by Desmond ... If they are red as crimson, they will become like wool. If you agree and obey,

thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Refrain.

2nd Lesson Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16Faith is the reality of what we hope for, the proof of what we don’t see. The elders in the past were approved because they showed faith. By faith we understand that the universe has been created by a word from God so that the visible came into existence from the invisible. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out without knowing where he was going. By faith he lived in the land he had been promised as a stranger. He lived in tents along with Isaac and Jacob, who were coheirs of the same promise. He was looking forward to a city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith even Sarah received the ability to have a child, though she herself was barren and past the age for having children, because she believed that the one who promised was faithful. So descendants were born from one man (and he was as good as dead). They were as many as the number of the stars in the sky and as countless as the grains of sand on the seashore. All these people died in faith without receiving the promises, but they saw the promises from a distance and welcomed them. They confessed that they were strangers and immigrants on earth. People who say this kind of thing make it clear that they are looking for a homeland. If they had been thinking about the country that they had left, they would have had the opportunity to return to it. But at this point in time, they are longing for a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God isn’t ashamed to be called their God—he has prepared a city for them. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn The congregation is invited to sing the Alleluia to the tune of Goodness is Stronger as the Gospel reader and acolytes process to the middle of the assembly.

The Holy Gospel please stand Luke 12:32-40The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke.Glory to you, Lord Christ. “Don’t be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights in giving you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to those in need. Make for yourselves wallets that don’t wear out—a treasure in heaven that never runs out. No thief comes near there, and no moth destroys. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be too. “Be dressed for service and keep your lamps lit. Be like people waiting for their master to come home from a wedding celebration, who can immediately open the door for him when he arrives and knocks on the door. Happy are those servants whom the master finds waiting up when he arrives. I assure you that, when he arrives, he will dress himself to serve, seat them at the table as honored guests, and wait on them. Happy are those whom he finds alert, even if he comes at midnight or just before dawn. But know this, if the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he wouldn’t have allowed his home to be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Human One is coming at a time when you don’t expect him.”The Gospel of our Lord.Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The presider concludes with prayer for the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread and wine, and the gathered congregation. The Eucharistic prayer concludes with a plea for the coming of God’s reign.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Pray in the language you prefer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hal-lowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Godly Play Resumes September 8! Children are spiritual. They have incredible capacity to listen, wonder, and make meaning out of the biblical stories they hear. This is the foundation for Godly Play, our Montessori-based Christian formation program for children. In Godly Play, we teach children the art of using religious forms of expression, including parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action. These are tools for them to articulate and wonder about the relationship they already have with God. Registration is not required for Godly Play. Simply bring your child to the downstairs classroom on Sunday at 9:15am. To find out more about email Heidi Olliff, Sunday Children’s Ministry Coordinator: [email protected]..

Liturgical Changes For Pentecost1. Inclusive Language: Holy Communion often intentionally uses liturgical sources that

balance gendered language, or use more fluid language for God. For the first time we are using a translation of the psalms (with permission) from the Order of Saint Helena. The psalms are also inclusive language, but preserve the rhythms of the prayer book translation.

2. Our New “Celebrating Diversity” Green Frontal and Vestments: are in use through the summer. If you look close, you will see pieces of fabric like Nigerian Cloth and Scottish Tartan. Folks from the congregation brought in bits of fabric that were meaningful to them, and they were quilted together into the accents on this new green set. You can see the breadth of cultures right in our “not so ordinary” set.

3. Scripture Readings from the Common English Bible, which was the most recently “authorized” translation by General Convention (in 2012). This text was edited by the most diverse group of translators that have ever come together on an Bible edition, and was written to be accessible for most readers of English. What phrases or changes in translation do you notice?

4. Our Gathering Song “Goodness is Stronger than Evil” is a Prayer of South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Tutu composed the prayer as he worked to protest the apartheid government of South Africa. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his faithful witness during apartheid and continued in leadership to dismantle systems of oppression when President Mandela asked him to head the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The prayer was set to music by the composer and Church of Scotland minister John Bell.
