GH PROMOTION
QMy spring bulbs are
starting to grow quickly.
What is the best way of
weeding between the bulbs
without damaging them?
ASpring bulbs begin to
flourish throughout
March and there are a
number of tools you can
use to ensure that you dont
damage them while weeding
in between them. Wilkinson
Swords stainless steel 163cmswoe-style hoe is ideal for
weeding around and behind
plants and bulbs in tight
situations, and by using a
push-and-pull action you can
sever the weeds from their
roots without having to bend
or kneel down.
If your bulbs are planted
in a raised bed or large
container, you may want to
use the Wilkinson Sword
hand weeder, which will give
you greater control and
enable you to lift out toughweeds by hand. To find
out more about Wilkinson
Swords garden tools, call

Rates &reservationsFrom 360 for a four-person cottage to900 for a 10-personcottage, for threenights, mid-week.
Why goThese picturesquecottages surroundedby parkland offer youthe freedom to enjoythe rural surroundingsat your leisure.
Things to doWander through thegardens or follow thewoodland path. Visitthe nearby towns ofNantwich and MarketDrayton to hunt forantiques. We enjoyeddelicious pub grubat The CombermereArms, just a shortwalk from the estate.
The impressive Combermere Abbey Estate dates back to the 16th century, when it began life as a monastery. The current owners have converted the
stables into nine holiday cottages, each individually designed to incorporate
modern furnishings with original features. Crossley Cottage sleeps up to 10
people, making it an ideal choice for a relaxed weekend away with friends.
Cool shades of duck-egg blue and grey teamed with oak furniture create
a tranquil feel in the elegant living room (pictured), while the cosy snug
area is perfect for the kids to settle into. All cottages have well-equipped
kitchens, although theres always the option to pick up a frozen ready meal,
such as a hearty cottage pie, at the visitors centre. For complete seclusion,
stay in the gothic Stone Lodge on the perimeter of the estate.

hen Heather and Ken
Lawson had to relocate
to the centre of
Nottingham for Kens job, Heatherhoped to find an attractive house that
would compensate for leaving behind
a relaxed life in the leafy suburbs.
Ken had been looking at properties
on and off for five months while he
was commuting in to town from our
old home, says Heather. When I joined
him for a weekend dedicated to house
hunting, our timing was extremely
lucky an Edwardian house with
a big garden had just come
on the market.
HISTORIC HOME
We had always wanted tolive in a period property
and the house had oodles
of character with Edwardian
cornices, picture rails,
fireplaces and curved dado
rails, says Heather. Even
the original Lincrusta wallpaper
in the hallway had survived and
the old roll-top bath was in good
condition. All of the rooms had
generously sized proportions and I
loved the French doors in the living
room that open out onto a veranda.

I really appreciate the
historic features around meThe house was originally built for the
owner of a Nottingham lace factory, so
it has a sturdy framework made from
high quality materials. It had been lived
in by two generations of the same family
and much of the layout had remained
unchanged since 1906. The previous
owners had made a few modernisations
in the 1980s but had kept the propertys
historic features intact.
DESIGN DECISIONSWe were fortunate that the previous
owners had put in central heating, andnew wiring and plumbing. In fact, all
of the boring expensive jobs had been
done recently and extremely well, so
all we had to do was make cosmetic
changes, which were not hugely costly.
We were able to get on with making
style decisions to put our stamp on
each room, explains Heather.
The couples first job was to update
the kitchen with its large cooker hood
built in to a fake chimney breast.

The couple had an old coal hole

I have liked old houses and vintage
clothes. I like to find new uses for vintage
fabrics and give them a second life. For

from the First World War.

homes is practically a hobby and we
used to look for the next project the
minute our current home was finished.
A change of direction five years ago
meant that the couple could finally put
down some roots. Theyd briefly lived inWest Sussex and decided to make it
their permanent base. They bought a
shop in Lindfield and moved into rented
accommodation before starting their
property search.
A SECOND LOOKThe first time Lisa and Jeremy viewed

For me, the Aga is the heart of ourhome. I love the warmth it generatesLisa. After a few months of looking at
other properties, the bungalow was still
on the market and they decided to go
back for a second viewing. With the sun shining, they ventured
into the garden and discovered that the
house backed on to open fields with
direct access to the glorious Ashdown
Forest. They realised that there was
space to the side of the property to
add an extension. We suddenly saw the
potential to make the house work for us.
CAREFUL PLANNINGLisa and Jeremy wanted to build a
two-storey extension with a bedroom
and en suite bathroom on each floor.
They hired an architect to draw up
their plans and, after a few tweaks, the
extension was given planning consent.
The couple then set about finding ateam of builders. Jeremy always insists
on getting three quotes but doesnt
necessarily choose the cheapest. Weve
been caught out before with extras that
builders dont include in their quotes
but can add a huge chunk to the overall
cost. With this in mind, the couple were
careful to provide a detailed list of
finishes down to tiny items, such as light
switches. They took a chance and went
with the most inexperienced team, three
brothers who lived locally. Lisa and

house when the building work started,
which meant Jeremy could oversee
progress on a daily basis. The builders
turned out to be superb, says Lisa. As
they were from the local area, they had
a great understanding of the style we
were aiming for and everything was
done very sympathetically to achieve
the look we wanted.
UPDATING THE OLDLisa set her mind to bringing some light
into the old part of the house. The living
room needed a radical rethink to
transform it into a modern country
haven. We had to contend with dark
walls and carpets and a huge brick
fireplace which stretched across most
of the room, says Lisa. Jeremy tackled
the fireplace and the couple hired a
carpenter to lay wooden flooring. A
hardboard base was put down, to which

the carpenter fixed French reclaimed
oak boards. The only criticism of our
carpenter is that he did too good a job.
We were imagining a rustic finish but
he sanded it so well its almost like a
bowling alley! says Jeremy.
SPLASHING OUT
Although it was the smallest room inthe house, the kitchen needed the most
planning. We felt that it should naturally
open on to the dining area so we had
to close up the existing doorway and
create a new opening, says Lisa. Rather
than putting in a metal RSJ, the couple
decided to use a feature wooden beam
and create a wider opening. They also
added a skylight to allow more natural
light into the dark room, which had been
nicknamed the dungeon.
They managed to sell the old kitchen
units on eBay for 500 and this helped
towards the cost of the item at the top
of Lisas wishlist; an Aga in Cherry Red.
For me, an Aga is the heart of a home.
Im not really much of a cook but I love
the warmth it generates, says Lisa. This
investment meant that Lisa and Jeremy
had to wait several months before they
could afford to finish the rest of the
kitchen, so they improvised with acouple of trestle tables and some fruit
boxes for storage.
A LAID-BACK LOOKHaving enjoyed many holidays in France,
Lisa was keen to capture a relaxed,
rustic simplicity in her home. I decided
to paint the whole house in a warm
off-white shade to tie the new extension
in with the old part of the house. In some
rooms I added feature walls in chalky
colours, which make a perfect backdrop
for colourful accessories. She chose

INTERIORINSPIRATIONAlthough weve moved
a lot, weve hung on to
most of our furniture
since it can often be
updated to work in a
different setting. One of
our previous homes wasan old farm-workers
cottage in Kent, where
I went for lots of pine
furniture. When we
moved here, I simply
painted many of the
pieces to fit in with a
more shabby-chic style.

into a home?
Always think about
how your home is used.
We have two dogs and a
cat so we have gone for
wooden flooring and a
leather sofa so we canenjoy the house without
being too precious. I also
have a signature room
fragrance; Fig by True
Grace (01985 210890,

Would you say that
your house is finished?
Im forever moving
things around so the
short answer is probably
no! My big passion is
linens and I always hang
on to old cushion covers
and blankets. We
recently discovered local
artist Bleau-Shanay
Hudson, who paints
woodland scenes
(woodland-art.net). We
have commissioned a
piece to hang above the
living room fireplace.

SECOND-HAND STYLELisa has combined vintage pieces
picked up from markets and car boot
sales over the years with new lamps, vases and tableware from Scandinavian
design companies. Rather than buying
new furniture, Lisa gave her existing
furniture a makeover with a lick of paint.
We hardly had to buy anything new
since most of the furniture has moved
with us from home to home. The cabinet
in our dining room came from an
apple-packing shed on Jeremys dads
farm. The final touch was to give their
home a name Lisa and Jeremy chose

LISASDECORATIVETOUCHESThe flow of a house is
important and I decorate sothat each room connects to
the next. While I love painted
furniture and floral fabrics, I
mix in vintage accessories
to toughen up the look. Ive
stuck to a neutral palette for
walls and carpets and used
red as an accent colour in
most rooms. This gives me
flexibility to swap things
around as Im prone to do!
