“Learn why we serve in the gospel”

#1

Mosiah 2:17

Helping others is something Jesus wants us to do. Learn why service is an important part of the gospel.

Others often give service you may not notice, such as preparing meals, reading to or listening to younger children, repairing clothing, or

helping a brother or sister.

For one week give people a paper heart when you see them serving. Color and cut out the small paper hearts on the next page. Use these hearts to give thanks.

Service is an important part of family life. Help plan your family’s menus, obtain food, and prepare part of the meals for one week. During that time, help your family gather at mealtimes. Share a scripture on service at your meals.

When you notice someone in need, think of a way to give help.

Sing Have I Done Any GoodListen to, sing, or sign along with the song, “Have I Done Any Good?”.

1. Have I done any good in the world today?Have I helped anyone in need?

Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?If not, I have failed indeed.

Has anyone's burden been lighter todayBecause I was willing to share?

Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way? When they needed my help was I there? Chorus

(Chorus)Then wake up and do something more Than dream of your mansion above.

Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure, A blessing of duty and love.

2. There are chances for work all around just now, Opportunities right in our way.

Do not let them pass by, saying, "Sometime I'll try," But go and do something today.

'Tis noble of man to work and to give;Love's labor has merit alone.

Only he who does something helps others to live. To God each good work will be known. Chorus

“Teach your family ways to serve”

With another person, help teach a lesson about service in family home evening or in another setting. Use things like:

Shine-Teach

Pictures Music Examples Demonstrations

Family Home Evening Lesson on Service Idea

FHE Theme: Service

Scriptures: Mosiah 2:17, D&C 24:7, Revelations 2:19

Songs: “Give Said the Little Stream” and “Happy Helper” in the Children’s Songbook

lesson: Start off the lesson by putting together a puzzle as a family.  Don’t pick a puzzle that is going to take a long time, but something your family can put together fairly quickly.  And before you start the puzzle, take out a couple of the pieces and put them in your pocket – don’t let anyone see you do this! While you’re putting the puzzle together, watch this short 5 minutes video from the Mormon Channel at this link:

Ask your family how they think a puzzle and service are related.  Then explain how a community consists of many people and many families, and just like it takes all the pieces to complete a puzzle, it takes all members of a community to make it a good place to live. Get out the puzzle pieces you have in your pocket.  Tell your family that these pieces represent them.  While you can still see most of the picture without all the pieces, it’s not until you get the entire puzzle completed that everything looks just right.  The same analogy can be applied to families, your ward, or the entire community – if we aren’t doing something to help those around us, then our environment is never going to be it’s very best.

Read the scriptures listed at the beginning of this lesson.  Discuss as a family which each scripture

means.  Ask questions like: • How is serving a neighbor like serving the Lord? • What does it mean to have strength if you devote yourself to service? • How does the last become more than the first when we give our time, money, and energy to service? • etc.

Finish the lesson by planning a family service project.  It can be something as simple as planting a few flowers in a neighbor’s yard or cleaning up a graffiti-ed street sign, or you can enlist the help of other friends and church members to accomplish a big project like the video showed.  The service project you plan should be on a scale that you know you can accomplish, because if you really want your family to understand the importance of service you’re going to need to follow through!

Project Ideas

•With another person, help plan and participate in a project to clean or beautify your community. •With another person, make a cookbook of simple recipes collected from family members and • friends. Prepare some of the recipes for your family. •Work with a family member to gather the names of some deceased relatives who were not members of the Church. Identify their birth and death dates, and prepare their names to be taken to the temple. If possible, help plan a temple trip and do baptisms for those relatives. Use the help found in the Friend, September 2010, pages 24–25. •Prepare to serve others by receiving training for skills such as caring for a pet, gardening, working in a nursery, using sign language, filing and organizing papers and household items, cooking, cleaning a home, or making a floral arrangement. Share your new skill with someone. • Serve others. Volunteer in the community, gather items to meet humanitarian needs, spend extended time with children or the elderly. Write in your journal: “I took a treat to _________. I made a new friend, _________. I visited _________. I helped serve by _________ (tying a quilt, putting together newborn kits, or some other service).” •There are many ways to make mealtime special. Choose one or more ways to improve mealtime each day for a week. For example, you could learn to set the table. Make a model placemat as your guide by drawing or attaching the plate, cup, napkin, and utensils in their proper place. Make a centerpiece or decoration for the table.
