Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Pope Francis has invited all the faithful to pray the rosary each day of the Marian month of October during this time of spiritual turbulence. He also asks the following two prayers be added, addressed to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to St. Michael the Archangel after the recitation of the rosary, both prayers asking the Lord to protect the Church from Evil: “We fly to Thy protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us from all

dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.” And, “St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.” (2) Someone is dishonestly using my name online to solicit money from people. Please ignore these illegal and false notices. (3) Printed in this bulletin are summary level Fiscal Year 2018 Financial Statements and Fiscal Year 2019 Budgets for Good Shepherd Parish and St. James School. I am happy to report both the parish and the school had operating surpluses for the fiscal year. Parishioners can find more detailed statements on the parish website. If you have any questions, contact David Gadbois (282-3321) or Nancy Naimey (282-4084). (4) Father Dominic will be on retreat this week. (5) All men ages 16 and older are invited to attend the 7th annual Maine Catholic Men’s Conference on Saturday, October 13, at the Cathedral, 8:30 am to 4 pm, concluding with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert P. Deeley. The cost is $50 for those age 23 or older and $30 for ages 16-22, lunch included. To register online, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/mensconference. Registration will be available on the day of the conference starting at 8:30 am. To view a flyer about the conference, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/MCFLYER.pdf. (6) Next Sunday, October 14, a communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick (without Mass) will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Church beginning at 2 pm. Who should be anointed? “Anyone whose health is seriously impaired, before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery, elderly people who have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present, and sick children who have sufficient use of reason (that is, the age of First Communion). The sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after being anointed and then again falls ill, or if during the same illness the person’s condition becomes more serious.” Observations from the Rite of Anointing: “Christians feel and experience pain as do all other people; yet their faith helps them to grasp more deeply the mystery of suffering and to bear their pain with greater courage. From Christ’s words, they know that sickness has meaning and value for their own salvation and for the salvation of the world. They also know that Christ, who during his life often visited and healed the sick, loves them in their illness… Doctors and all who are devoted in any way to caring for the sick should consider it their duty to use all the means which in their judgment may help the sick, both physically and spiritually. In so doing, they are fulfilling the command of Christ to visit the sick, for Christ implied that those who visit the sick should be concerned for the whole person and offer both physical relief and spiritual comfort… Those who are seriously ill need the special help of God’s grace in this time of anxiety, lest they be broken in spirit and, under the pressure of temptation, perhaps weakened in their faith. I urge parishioners who are not themselves in need of this sacrament to join us for this celebration in order to provide prayerful support of fellow parishioners in need of healing and comfort. (7) Thank You of the Week: Fr. Ron Labarre is celebrating his final Mass of the season at St. Brendan this Saturday evening, October 6, before returning to a warmer climate for the winter. I am grateful for his summertime ministry among us, and I know he is very much appreciated by parishioners. We hope to see him again at Christmas time. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 8 - Msgr. Tonne: Smart Son: “Dad, I just siphoned a couple of gallons of gas out of your car for my old bus. It’s okay, isn’t it?” Smarter Father: “Sure, it’s okay, son. I bought the gas with your allowance for next week. So run along and have a good time.” –Sunshine Magazine

~ Blessing of the Animals ~ Saint James School

Thurs., Oct. 4th at 7:50 am

Parishioners can bring an animal (big or small), a photograph or a drawing to be blessed on

this feast day of Saint Francis. Because students can't always escort their pets, you will see various photographs and pictures of

animals, but parents and parishioners are certainly welcome to accompany an animal into the school yard

on Thurs., Oct. 4 at 7:50 am (weather permitting). See you then!

As we prepare for the future, we build upon the faith and sacrifice of our ancestors creating hope for the future.

Now there is a special opportunity for all parishioners to strengthen our parish and to ensure that our legacy of faith will continue in perpetuity.

St. James School Endowment Fund with the Catholic Foundation of Maine

For more information on how you can build this important fund for our parish, contact Elizabeth Badger, Executive Director, the Catholic Foundation of Maine, 207-321-7820 or [email protected].

Saint James School is proud to have begun its twenty sixth year as a merged Catholic school in Biddeford. Its history dates back to the turn of the century when there were many Catholic schools in the area. Saint James School is the last remaining Catholic school and embraces its long storied history of all the Catholic school graduates in the area. Enrollment at Saint James is steady and we welcome twelve new fami-lies to Saint James this year. The staff is dedicated with the motto to put students first by teaching the whole child, differentiating instruction and

treating each student as if they were their own child. The mission of the school is SAFE and it stands for

Service * Academics * Faith * Excellence. Saint James School has a rolling admission policy. Come and see Saint

James School and give your child this gift. Call 282-4084 for a tour.

Saint James has two endowment funds. One is a savings account for the school and the other is for

scholarships. If you want to donate to either one, please contact The Catholic Foundation of Maine at (207) 321-7894 to either make a

donation or to remember us in your estate planning. Let us be sure that we always have a Catholic school in the area

by supporting this outreach of Good Shepherd Parish. Thank you.

Do you order a lot through Amazon? If you do, you can help Saint James School by logging into amazon smiles first and selecting

Saint James School in Biddeford. (There are a lot of Saint James Schools so pick the Biddeford school). Then .5% of your eligible purchases will be given to Saint James School.

It doesn't seem like much, but with holiday shopping around the corner, the cumulative effect of this will be a boost to the school!

It does not cost you anything. Spread the word! Thank you!! https://smile.amazon.com/ch/01-0473551

Saint James School will host its Trot for Catholic Education 5K and Kids Fun Run at the school

The Harvest Fair is quickly approaching!

To make this year's fair the best ever, we are still in need of help from family & friends of St. Philip Church and Good Shepherd Parish parishioners.

Dear Parishioners: the BAKED GOODS TABLE at the Harvest Fair will need donations of goods: cookies, pies, breads, fudge, and homemade candies.

Also, items, like new or gently used, are needed for the adult and children treasure chest tables.

These items can be dropped off: Fri., Oct. 26th (in St. Philip Church Hall, between 2:00 - 7:00 PM) OR donations can be dropped off any time Saturday or Sunday during the fair.

The Harvest Fair is also in need of volunteers to help set up: the week of Oct. 14th and week of Oct. 21st. Day & Evening volunteers are needed. Please call Gisele or Donna (at their numbers below) to verify times.

Following are a few ideas for our Penny Raffle tables: We need gift cards to local businesses, restaurants, or garden shops. Also, outdoor living accessories, toys, jewelry, & fitness items. Other suggestions are items donated from

your business or employer (i.e.: oil changes, car detailing, heating oil and movie passes). Families may also want to donate passes to museums, theater tickets, or sporting events.

The craft tables need your help with donations of locally crafted items such as: knitted hats, mittens, quilts, & baskets.

Donated items can be dropped off before or after each of the two Masses or you may

call Gisele Lynes at 499-7453 or Donna Bilodeau at 499-7490.

The fair will have Adult & Children Treasure Chest Tables and Baked Goods Table, as well as Kitchen Counter!

We are open to all ideas and suggestions, and look forward to having a successful Harvest Fair!

WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM? Answering the one question that really matters. Christ asked those closest to him a fascinating question. He didn’t

ask “What do people say I teach?” or “What do people think I want to accomplish?” He made the question personal, looking directly at his dearest friends and asking them, “Who do you say that I am?” Regis-tration is now open: goodshepherdparish.us / 282-3321 to sign up.

STARTS NEXT WEEK, SO SIGN UP NOW!

Good Shepherd Parish will offer an Anointing of the Sick Service on Sunday, October 14, 2:00 pm, at Most Holy Trinity Church. The prayer service will be followed by light refreshments.

Please call Sue Anne (284-5860) if you can help. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is meant for those whose health is seriously impaired by illness (physical or mental) or old

age. A sick person should be anointed before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery.

Elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened, even though no serious illness is present.

Two FREE Educational Opportunities at St. André Health Care: 401 Pool St, Biddeford

“She never behaved like this before.” “I don’t know what to do when I visit him.” “I wish I understood what was really happening.”

Have you ever asked yourself these or similar questions? The changes we see in a person with dementia can be quite confusing and sometimes

frustrating for us. During our time together, we will talk about what is occurring in the brain and what we can do to best serve the person we

care about. Bring your questions, bring your concerns and also bring your joys. We are on a path together and together we can learn how to

support ourselves and our loved ones. St. André Health Care invites community members to

“Walking the Path Together”- a program supporting loved ones on their journeys with dementia: Oct. 13, 10 am – Noon. If interested

call 282-5171. Located at St. André in the Community Room.

St. Andre Health Care in partnership with Biddeford Adult Education is accepting candidates for a fall State approved C.N.A. course (with 1 year commitment to employment).

Applicants are limited. FMI call/email River Payne, RN, Instructor: 207-303-4438 / [email protected].

Good Shepherd Parish Christmas Fair 2018: Nov. 9-11

It’s almost here. The Good Shepherd Parish Christmas Fair is less than two months away. If you are wondering how you can help,

here a few ways to consider: The Penny Raffle could use some Brand New items to display on our large elevated tables. Things like

mixers, blenders, microwave ovens, lawn mower, crock pot, grills, bikes, bocce game, and things like that. The Children’s Section could use games, toys, trinkets and other items that children would enjoy. Grandma’s Kitchen is hoping that many of you will bake pies, cakes

and other edible delights to donate to the fair. Homemade pies go especially well. Please contact the heads of the various areas to do-

nate or contact Dan & Denise at 284-5195. See you at the Fair. ~ Dan

A note regarding Fair Drop Offs: We plan on accepting many items at St. Joseph Church Hall (not the parish office) at specific

times during the week leading up to the Fair. An area will be sectioned off so that drop offs will not interfere with Fair set up. Some items may be requested before the fair by table chairpersons. Please call those in

charge ahead of time to let them know what to expect if you are donating (see Sept. 23 bulletin online for chairperson list). We have temporarily stopped taking New to You Items and books for now.

Your kind participation, generosity, patience, and understanding are greatly appreciated beyond words. God bless you!
