+PSALMODY+

Psalm 96; antiphon: v. 2

2Sing to the Lord, bless his name;*tell of his salvation from day to day.1Oh sing to the Lord a new song;*sing to the Lord, all the earth!2Sing to the Lord, bless his name;*tell of his salvation from day to day.3Declare his glory among the nations,*his marvelous works among all the peoples!4For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;*he is to be feared above all gods.5For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,*but the Lord made the heavens.6Splendor and majesty are before him;*strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

7Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,*ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!8Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;*bring an offering, and come into his courts!9Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;*tremble before him, all the earth!

10Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;*he will judge the peoples with equity.”

11Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;*let the sea roar, and all that fills it;12let the field exult, and everything in it!Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy13before the Lord, for he comes,*for he comes to judge the earth.He will judge the world in righteousness,*and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son*and to the Holy Spirit;as it was in the beginning,*is now, and will be forever. Amen.

2Sing to the Lord, bless his name;*tell of his salvation from day to day.

Psalm Prayer

LLet us pray.

Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before You, O Lord, and let Your loving-kindness descend on us that, with purified minds, we may sing Your praises with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host and may glorify You forever.

CAmen.

+READINGS+

First ReadingIsaiah 7:10–14

10Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11“Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

AThis is the Word of the Lord.

CThanks be to God.

Second Reading1 John 4:7–16

7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

13By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

AThis is the Word of the Lord.

CThanks be to God.

Verse

C Alleluia. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. Alleluia.

Gospel ReadingMatthew 1:18–25

18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

23“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,and they shall call his name Immanuel”

(which means, God with us). 24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

Final Reading ResponseLSB 247

LIn many and various ways, God spoke to His people of old by the prophets.

CBut now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

Collect For Peace

LO God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works, give to us, Your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey Your commandments and also that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

CAmen.

Lord’s PrayerLSB 251

LTaught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray:

COur Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

LThe people walking in darkness have seen a great light.

CThe light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

LOn those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

Candlelight Instructions (7 p.m.): At this time, the lights in the sanctuary will be dimmed. The acolytes will light their candles from the Christ candle and light the candle of the person at the end of each row. They will then light the candle of the person next to them. Please do this by holding the lit candle upright and tipping only the unlit candle. Please do not tip your lit candle, this will help to avoid dripping wax.
