NICHOLAS GAWARECKI

I have had the chance to meet some of you during these unusual times but Father

suggested that I write to formally introduce myself and share some of my story. I have been in

seminary for two years and finished my philosophy studies at Immaculate Heart of Mary

Seminary this past spring. This fall I will be attending Sacred Heart Major Seminary studying

Theology. I will be there for four years and most likely have an additional pastoral year after

the first two years, so it will be 5 years before I will become a priest, if all progresses on

schedule.

I come from a catholic family and have an older sister and two younger brothers. I was

homeschooled and part of a catholic homeschool group, so the faith always was part of my life.

I was blessed with parents and grandparents who all practiced their faith and whose example

was essential for the planting and maturation of my own faith. Encouraged even as a kid to

consider a vocation to the priesthood, the priesthood resonated with me and grew into a desire.

However, I wasn’t sure I was ready or if that was really what God wanted, so after high school I

attended a community college for one year, then transferred to Benedictine College for three

years and earned a bachelors in Theology with a music minor. After graduation I still wasn’t

sure what God was calling me to, so I attended Moorhead State for two years and earned a

paralegal degree.

Upon graduation, I worked as a paralegal in a personal injury law firm in Mankato for a

year and then got a job at Olmsted County District Court where I worked for almost 3 years.

During that time I spent a lot of time in adoration or visiting a church and eventually understood

God was calling me to consider seminary. I began meeting with Fr. Thompson who was the

pastor of Pax Christi where Fr. Fasnacht was the associate before becoming pastor here. I

considered religious life, but decided God was calling me to seminary for the diocesan

priesthood. I applied and began seminary in the fall of 2018.

Over this summer I have been able to do quite a bit of reading which is probably the

hobby that I have been able to do most since entering seminary. I also like to cook and bake

which I learned from my mother, grandmother, and google. I love music (classical) and play

the piano and sing and dabble on the viola. I enjoy watching good movies, playing card games,

and target shooting. I try to stay active and like shorter runs, going to the gym, and ultimate

frisbee.

I am grateful to Fr. Fasnacht for hosting me and appreciate the community we have

through praying morning and evening prayer together, celebrating mass, Bible study, meals, and

hanging out. With the effects of Covid-19, I have been more aware of the privilege we have as

Catholics to receive the Eucharist and hope you all take advantage of the grace it brings. Being

in a parish has also helped me to understand the calling of the diocesan priesthood lived in

action albeit in unusual times. I look forward to continue to get to know many of you through

the rest of the summer, and I ask for your prayers that I and all my fellow seminarians become

more conformed to Christ, our great high priest.

Policy on Mass Intentions: While the parishes wish to be supportive of the need for Mass intentions for loved ones, in fairness to all we have decided to set the limits as follows: 1. We can only schedule for 1 year in advance. 2. Cost for the Mass is $5.00 per intention. 3. Only 3 Masses per person will be accepted for the year. 4. If there is a large amount of money available, the church will ask if part of it can be a donation, or if part of it can be sent to the Seminary or the missions to be used there. We hope this clarifies the method of scheduling Mass intentions for the parishes and we hope you understand.

Respect Life

Some important news to share. You’ve likely read or heard in the news that abortion

facilities in Minnesota and many states across the country remain open. This places

many people at risk by continuing to do elective surgery and using personal protective

equipment (PPE) that is desperately needed for healthcare workers on the frontlines of

the COVID-19 outbreak

Take some time to e-mail Governor Tim Waltz and ask him to close abortion facilities

during the Pandemic: https://studentsforlife.quorum.us/campaign/25304/ or call our

Governor at 651-201-3400.

Catholic Charities offers free adoption information meetings to help you learn about the process to begin building your family. We have adoption social workers in Winona, Rochester, Mankato and Worthington who offer home studies for international and domestic infant adoption. Please email [email protected] or call 507-287-2047 to schedule an information meeting.
