On May 29, 2010, the Waterloo Center for the Arts Public Art Committee dedicated a new public art project at the RiverLoop Expo Plaza in downtown Waterloo.

The project is named “Art & Environment: Where People Gather” and was a fall 2009 grant recipient of the Community Foundation. The project highlights concepts of environment, natural history and sustainability, and gives visitors to downtown Waterloo a taste of the Cedar Valley’s rich environmental heritage.

Four artists whose art addresses these themes were commissioned to create an exhibit of banners and original works to be displayed at the Center and at the RiverLoop Expo Plaza. Artists Joan Webster-Vore, Scott Hudson, Pam Echeverria and Carol Macomber worked together to develop a body of work that interprets the above issues from their individual perspectives, while also providing visual

Iowa Community Foundations receive award for serviceThe Rebuild Iowa Award for Service was presented to Iowa Community Foundations on July 22. First Lady Mari Culver and Lt. Gen. Ron Dardis, executive director of the Rebuild Iowa Office, presented the award during the Iowa Council of Foundations July membership meeting at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines.

Iowa Community Foundations is one of nine recipients of the award, which recognizes individuals, and organizations that have gone above and beyond the call of duty in Iowa’s 2008 disaster recovery efforts. Other recipients were presented awards at various public meetings and events throughout July.

Iowa Community Foundations is a coalition of foundations which serve communities all across the state. The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa is part of this coalition. Iowa Community Foundations was instrumental in the wake of the 2008 disasters in the Embrace Iowa fundraising campaign and in other disaster recovery-related activities.

There are approximately 130 community foundations serving both urban and rural Iowa, including the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. Representatives from 10 of the Iowa community foundations were on hand to accept the award.

Nominees for the award were judged on volunteer hours, community impact, creativity, leadership and project(s) sustainability. v

connectivity so the exhibit of banners and accompanying museum exhibition work as a unit.

Each artist created six unique pieces of artwork, which have been duplicated into 96 2’x6’ banners for the RiverLoop Expo Plaza grounds.

The banner exhibit on the RiverLoop Expo Plaza will remain on view through October 2010, and the accompanying exhibition of the original works opened this summer at the Center. One work from each of the artists will also be acquired for the Center's permanent collection.

Kent Shankle, Curator for the Waterloo Center for the Arts, offers a personal story about the project:

“With any major project, one encounters challenges. I would certainly say that I was feeling challenged as we were in the midst of the final installation of this banner art project on the city’s new RiverLoop Expo Plaza. We had encountered problems with the banners fitting with the existing hardware. We had to improvise a new installation process which caused a significant delay. This put us in a time crunch to complete the installation in time for the dedication reception, and we were finishing with only hours to spare.

The weather was extremely hot and humid, the progress painfully slow, and the installation crews were under the gun to get on to preparations for the 4th Street Cruise and other projects. I was hot, tired, sunburned and dehydrated. Just as I was feeling discouraged and overwhelmed, I looked upward at the banners that we had already put into place. Set against the vivid blue Iowa sky, the images called out to me. They spoke to me of the rich and evocative history of this place, of the fertility and beauty of the Cedar Valley’s land and life forms.

I found not only peace and comfort in these images, but also passion and inspiration. I immediately felt my discomfort ease and my frustration dissipate. At that moment, I knew that even if only a few of the people who spend time on or pass by this place experienced this banner installation as I did, the project would be a resounding success.

It was a tremendous joy to see others at the dedication ceremony the following morning looking up and enjoying the banners. I am thrilled to know that residents and visitors to our area will have this outdoor art installation to experience and enjoy for years to come. v

Community Foundation grants $232,516 to 36 local nonprofitsAt the June board meeting of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, the board of directors approved $232,516 in grants to 36 Black Hawk County nonprofit agencies as part of the Community Foundation’s spring grant cycle.

Among the awards was a $2,500 grant to the Bosnian Cultural Foundation for a project called Recapturing Traditions, which preserves and promotes Bosnian cultural traditions in the Cedar Valley. The grant will be used specifically for a video documentary, CD and interactive website project to preserve musical traditions now practiced mostly by elderly refugees. Audio and video recordings of traditional performances and cultural traditions will be presented to the public. North Cedar Elementary School received a $1000 Vision for Education grant for their “The Leader in Me” and “Lego: Serious Play” projects. During the 2010-11 school year, North Cedar Elementary will be implementing the leadership initiative called “The Leader in Me” based on Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective Kids.” One of the ways this initiative will be carried out is through the “Lego: Serious Play” project. Teachers will be trained and will then introduce the use of Legos in the classroom with specific learning goals related to problem solving, communication skills and imagination. Additionally, the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s office received a $10,000 grant for their Shadow Boxing: Youthful Offender Diversion Program. Through a partnership with a local church, the Sheriff’s office targets “at-risk” youth and current youthful offenders for this program, wherein youth and their parents must agree to a one year “contract” in which they agree to provide community service and attend educational/motivational programming together that is provided by Juvenile Court Services, Department of Corrections, and local faith-based and community groups. This program is not unlike the adult “inmate worker program”, except that it goes further by involving parents every step of the way and aims to reduce the number of youthful offenders through prevention.

In addition to the Bosnian Cultural Foundation, North Cedar Elementary and the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s office, the following is a complete list of Black Hawk County discretionary grantees and the program that received a Spring 2010 grant from the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa.

Sheriff Tony Thompson, Pastor Faye Scott and Deputy Joe Stafford accept the grant for the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Shadow Boxing program.
