Homecoming This Month We will be celebrating our 2014 Homecoming on Sunday, September 14. It will be a special time of
worship, music and fellowship. Start the day with Sunday School at 9:45 am and Service at 11:00
am, followed by the traditional Berea Luncheon at noon. Bring your favorite meat, side dish or des-
sert to share. Come, invite your family and friends for this blessed event. It promises to be a time of
food for the soul, spirit and body!
From the Pastor, Phil Mumford On September 14 Berea will celebrate Homecoming, a time when people return to a familiar place to be refreshed and inspired through worship, reconnect with friends, and indulge in a seemingly endless supply of good eats and sweets. Personally, I would rather have eight deviled eggs and skip the chocolate pie, but I realize that is a minority position. Yet, what is Homecoming and why do we celebrate this event?
Many persons I have encountered over the years beyond Baptist walls are ignorant of homecoming celebrations. For a church founded in 1855, this is a special occasion, recognizing and remembering the bounty of blessings that God has bestowed on Berea. We remember our history, the churches that have been born from the Berean bloodline, and the many ministries that have touched many lives around the world. Yet for a church that is over 150 years old, is that really that old?
On September 14, 2014 Oakland Baptist Church, Prince George, VA will celebrate 300 years of Christian service, the location where my faith journey began, and my parents have been members since the 1960’s. I have vivid memories and deep roots with that church where my youth group consisted of me, my brother and sister, along with a handful of others, albeit a very small hand and often not so full.
However, the current average attendance on any given Sunday totals around 200! What happened to that little church whose sanctuary once served as a makeshift Confederate hospital during the Civil War and recently built a new worship space with 400+ seating capacity?
What I do know is this: Berea Baptist Church can only grow by and through the power of Spirit of Christ. And growth is a process of change, which requires flexibility and a willingness to hear new voices, shake new hands, make new friends under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and God’s Holy Word. Is Berea on a trajectory to build a new sanc-tuary? Of course, what is wrong with the old one? I ponder a similar question when God creates a new heaven, a new earth: what is wrong with the old heaven?
This is a story of possibilities, and with God any-thing can happen. Jesus proclaimed that we should bring new and old things from the store-house. While we celebrate the past in the present, we presently must be willing to embrace the fu-ture as we make new disciples, new branches on our family tree.
BEREA BAPTIST CHURCH NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2014
“A COMMUNITY OF SERVANTS SERVING OUR COMMUNITY” in Durham, NC
What Does Love Look Like? By Jim Barringer We invite you to join us for Sunday School at 9:45 am every Sunday
to experience how we can live forever in God’s love.
*Love has to be one of the most overused words. And perhaps one
of the most abused words. We love both things and people, but the moment they let
us down, disappoint us, or fail to live up to our expectations, we move on to someone
or something else. We love until something better comes along. And then we transfer
our love.
God loves like no one else. Regardless of our shortcomings, faults, disappointments,
and our outright sinful rebellion, He loves. How do we know that? All we have to do is
look at Jesus Christ. “But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still
sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
God, because of His great love, will not abandon us. Yes, we are sinners; we have
failed God (Romans 3:23). Instead of love, we deserve death (Romans 6:23). But God
sent Jesus Christ to earth to live the perfect life we could not. God approved the
sacrifice of His Son and raised Him from the dead. Jesus not only defeated death, but
we can have a new life in Him.
No matter where you are on your life adventure or your age, there is a Sunday School
Class for you and your family. We would be delighted to have you learn, explore,
fellowship and develop your relationship with God with us.
Community Dinner and Adult & Youth Bible Study
Wednesday, September 3, 2014 6:00 pm-Dinner; 6:30 pm Bible Study
September Choir Notes by Judi Kochik, Music Director September has always been a favorite month for a variety of reasons: because I've always loved school both as a student and then as a teacher, it's the time of new beginnings; being from Pennsylvania, it was the month for the leaves to change and for the geese to fly over; because it's my birthday month, it's been a time to celebrate with family & friends. Now one more reason to love September - Homecoming at Berea on the 2nd Sunday! Please be sure to join us on September 14th for Sunday School, Worship, and the South's Best Pot-luck Luncheon! Our folks at Berea sure can cook and bake!!!
In September, the choir will meet Sunday mornings at 9:00 to rehearse and pray. This month's evening rehearsals will be Sept. 7 and Sept. 28 from 6:00-8:00. It's hard to believe, but we'll be starting to practice the music for Christmas! Want to join us? Then come on...now is the time!
Special notes of thanks: When I am away, Anne DeVore fills in as the pianist. You are so friendly, encouraging, and welcoming to her; that makes it nice for her - and me! She will be returning on September 21. Rich and I will be in New England celebrating my milestone birthday (how could I be 60 when I feel like I'm still 25?). Also, a special thank you to Jim Barringer for graciously leading the music when we're away.
The Choir Needs You, And You Need The Choir In the August newsletter from Brentwood music, I was blessed by an article written by Brad Parsley; you may be, too. Here are his main points: *The choir was God's idea: From Genesis 4:21 we know that Jubal was the father of musicians; his name means "stream" (to carry, lead, conduct). If we apply this to music, it's a picture that our music should be like a stream that flows to the throne of God. The choir helps facilitate this leading. *The choir is important to God: From I Chronicles 23:1-5 we learn that God appointed 4,000 Levites to sing, pray worship, and praise God day and night at the tabernacle! *The choir is multi-generational: It's a picture of the body of Christ! God calls all people to worship together, and we are all needed and all worship the same God. *The choir is a unity builder: Psalm 133 talks about how good it is to be in unity; it's like precious oil (a symbol of the Holy Spirit); and God adds His presence when we are in uni-ty. When the choir operates in unity from wor-shiping God together, they help unify the entire body. *The choir stands on the front lines: In the story of Jehoshaphat (II Chronicles 20), we see that the singers were put out in front as they went into battle. In today's church, people enter from a week of attacks by the enemy with things that kill, steal and destroy. They need lead into battle with praise and thanksgiving - with music- and come out victorious! *The choir has power: Mark 2 tells the story of the paralyzed man being let down through the roof by his friends so Jesus could heal him. In verse 5 we learn that when he saw "their" faith, he forgave the man's sins and healed him. It was the faith of his friends - of those who knew and loved him. The choir through their faith, praise, and worship of God can bring healing and redemption to people through Jesus! Parsley concludes his article saying, "You can accomplish so much more as a team than you can alone. We were made by God to be on a 'team'. We were made to be in relationship with others; to live in community. The choir is definitely a beautiful place for all those things. THE CHOIR NEEDS YOU, AND YOU NEED THE CHOIR!"

New Sunday Adult and Youth Bible Study Do you know what you believe? Are you ready to defend it? Would you take a stand? At some point every believer will have to take a stand for their faith, answer questions from a skeptic or stand up for what they know is right. Often this challenge comes when you least expect it. This is where the “God’s Not Dead”: What Do You Believe? Study can help. Based on the hit movie, “God’s Not Dead”, each session of this study will look at real life situations, the biblical responses to them and help discover what you believe and how to stand up for it.
This study will begin this Sunday, August 25 at 5:00 pm for both the adults and youth. Please come, bring your family and friends, and discover how to answer what it is that you believe.
From The Youth Director, Suzy Kochik Last month, guys (ages 13 and up), who qualified from our youth ministry,
gathered together at Kure Beach for their Reward Retreat. The retreat focused
on helping to battle everyday temptations, using a curriculum by Kurt Johnston,
called “Tempting Stuff”. We will continue to focus on temptation throughout
the year with all ages of our ENGAGE group.
We discovered that this type of reward program was successful enough that
we have provided all the youth with an opportunity to earn a free ticket to see
the Newsboys in concert on Friday, October 24th at the NC State Fair. If all the
requirements are fulfilled by October 19th, they will each be blessed to hear
the Newsboys perform live in Raleigh.
To help cover the expense for activities like this, the youth will be selling
drinks and snacks in the fellowship hall, starting at 4:45 every
Sunday night, during the “God’s Not Dead” Bible Study. All items
are $1.00. This also helps them learn about accountability, the value of a dollar,
team work and how to serve.
God Is Good! Thank You. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our first movie night last month, viewing “God’s Not Dead”. Together we were educated, entertained, and inspired to explore what we really believe about God.
The youth really appreciated your donations and purchas-ing snacks, helping to raise funds for their upcoming struc-tured activities throughout the year.
We pray that you will join us for the “God’s Not Dead” adult and youth bible study, staring Sunday, August 25th, using this film to now ignite important conversations and life-changing decisions.
