Week 1• No! No! No!• Words related to criticizing,
scolding, or disapproving
Berate- verb• To scold in a harsh tone• The drill sergeant berated the
new cadets for hours becauseof their unpolished shoes.
Castigate- verb• To scold or punish severely• After being castigated by the police
officer for driving too fast, Josh never went over 50 with his mother in the car.
Deprecate- verb• To show mild disapproval• In class we make no
deprecating comments to each other because it will only stifle our creativity!
Week 2• Nooooooooooo!!•Words relating to harmful or
mean.
Nefarious- adj• Very mean or wicked• Of all the rotten characters in the
Prologue, the Pardoner may be one of the most nefarious.
Odious- adj• Revolting in a disgusting way•Whereas the Pardoner is the
most nefarious, the Summoner is one of the most odious.
Rancorous- adj•Deeply hateful; malicious•The Parson is the least rancorous of all the characters.
Iniquitous- adj
• Showing a lack of fairness• “Iniquity has no place in a
courtroom!” the judge warned the jury.
Virulent- adj• Extremely poisonous; deadly• H1N1 is considered an extremely
virulent strand of influenza; therefore, be vigilant and wash your hands!
Week 3•Who cares?•Words related to lack of
interest
Apathetic- adj• Indifferent; lacking emotion• “I’ve heard this school is a hot bed of
apathy,” said Mr. Hughes, “Therefore, we will have a pep rally every Friday!”
Listless- adj• Spiritless• Even with the energetic
cheerleaders and the million pies thrown at Mr. Hughes, the students still seemed listless.
Impassive- adj• Showing no “drive”• Even when told the assignment was
worth 2,000 points, the students impassively got to work.
Nonchalant- adj
• Casual and indifferent• With her nonchalant attitude,
nobody guessed that Sheiron was going for cheerleader of the universe.
Stolid- adj• Not showing any emotion;
stoic• Always stoic, Tyler accepted
defeat at the Cheerleader of the Universe pageant gracefully.
