Over 5500 Attend JoyousFeast of Tabernacles!

A thrilling and JOYOUS Feast of God has just ended! God'spresence and POWER was felt in the huge new Tabernaclenear Gladewater.

j\REMENDOUS congregation of over5500 people thril led to the inspired sermons at the Feast ofTabernacles this year! Great enthusiasmand JOY was apparent everywhere.Countless times, Mr. Armstrong had topause in the middle of a happy announcement unt il the spontaneous applause had subsided. This feeling of loveand unity was unusual even for theFeast of Tabernacles! Many commentedthat it was the best Feast in every waythat they had ever attended. This was the SEVENTH Feast of Tabernacles to be held on God 's own propertynear Gladewater, Texas, and God certainly BLESSED His people in an unusualway this year! The sermons brought byGod's ministers were the most inspiringand powerful of any year so far. The atmosphere of love and spiritual brother-hood was outs tanding. Camping anddining facilities turned out to be excel-lent for most. And the weather wasalmost perfect-resulting in fewer coldsand sicknesses than in any other Feastof recent years!

"Booth City"Hundreds of the brethren who campedon our own grounds were housed in thewell constructed metal booths which wererushed to completion just before theFestival. Two hundred and fifty of thesebooths were completed just before the

by Roderick C.MeredithFestival began. More than 200 of these, plus two new sanitary buildings, formedthe beginning of the new "Booth City"on a 142 acre tract, newly purchased, adjoining the campgrounds on the east.Although the planned bunk type ofdouble-deck beds were not yet availablefor most of the booths because of thecurrent steel s tr ike, the bre thren we interviewed seemed to be very happy andsatisfied with the booths-and thankfulto live right on the festival grounds.

The "camp of Israel" was kept neatand clean as a whole. Although therewere some infractions requiring correction and exhortation from Mr. Armstrong, the brethren as a whole dwelttogether in unity, decency and order. To the casual visitor, the largest groupof these booths over in the new "BoothCity" mut have looked like a temporaryminiature city. Because of the haste withwhich the booths had to be constructed, the builder, Mr. Fleming, suggested thatthe housing area be named "SuddenCity"!Beside these fine metal booths, hundreds of the brethren stayed in comfortable house trailers bought or rented forthe occasion, and many camped in tentson the grounds. Hundreds of othersstayed in temporary abodes in motels, hotels, and in rooms ill private homes inBig Sandy, Gladewater and other nearbycommunities.

Our gathering this year was so largeand impressive that we received newspaper coverage in three or four localpapers. Even the unconverted newspaperwriters-although they couldn't understand the real spi ri tual purpose behindthese meetings-were filled with admiration for the enthusiasm and dedication shown by God's people at HisFestival! We were a "light" to the world!Outstanding Meals and OrganizationDelicious and wholesome meals wereserved in the smaller tabernacle underthe direction of Mrs. Roy Hammer. Themeals were of high quali ty this year, andthe service and organization was exceptional cons idering the huge crowd. Inaddit ion, many campers as well as thosewho stayed in trailer houses on thegrounds cooked some of their own meals.A great deal of THANKS is due to Mr.Roy Hammer and Mr. Don Billingsleyfor the ir outstanding direc tion and organization of the large staff of deacons, deaconesses and assistant deacons whohelped in the many tasks requi red for asmoothly run Festival of Tabernacles. These men had to think and plan aheadfor efficiency in the parking of cars, thesetting up of tents and trailers, the lighting, water and sewage systems, the seating of people and collection at songbooks, the registration of everyone whoattended the Festival, and the "thousand

Andmany went horseback riding or fishingduring the free afternoons. And, ofcourse, much personal fellowship wasenjoyed by everyone with scores of otherbrethren from all over the United Statesand Canada. It is an experience one doesnot soon forget!

Beautiful MusicOutstandingly beautiful music addeda great deal to every single preachingservice at this year's festival. In addition

to his preaching, Mr. Ted Armstrongsang a number of vocal solos dur ing theservices. Our song leader, Mr, Al Portune, provided us with a couple of in-

The GOOD NEWSspiring solos with his beautiful tenorvoice.

Among the others who contr ibu tedtheir musical talents to this festival wereMr. Dwight Armstrong, Mr. Armstrong's brother , who has composed somany of the hymns we sing in our ownhymn book. Mr. Dwight Armstrong displayed great feeling in his beautifulviolin solo work. His wife, Karen Armstrong, thri lled the congregat ion withher beautiful soprano solos. Mr. MorganOlson and Mrs. Ruth Plache both sangbeautifully in their vocal numbers.Miss Ruth Myrick displayed brillianceand color in her piano rendi tion of "TheHoly City." And Miss Kathryn Meredithplayed beaut iful ly and feelingly in herviolin numbers. Many except ional numbers were offered by the Ambassador Chorale duringthe preaching services, and in a specialconcert given Sunday night dur ing thefestival. Mr. Leon Ett inger, director ofthe Ambassador Chorale, and Mrs. LucyMartin and Mrs. Dorothy Williams wereall with us during the first half of the

November, 1959festival to aid in the direction and accompaniment of the Chorale and specialmusical numbers.Truly, the inspiring and upl if ting atmosphere was great ly enhanced by thebeautiful music which was offered during this year's Feast of Tabernacles. Thiswas certainly a foretaste of God's millennium, when all men will REJO,CE andpraise God in the song and on musicalinstruments! (Psalm 150).

Ordinations and Future PlansRegular ministers' meetings were heldduring and immediately after the festival. During these meetings, many planswere laid for the future of God's workand also for the improvement of theFeast of Tabernacles year by year.As a result of these conferences, twonew local elderswere ordained in God'sChurch! They are Mr. Albert Portune, whom all uf yuu will remember as ourinspir ing song leader dur ing the Feast,

and Mr. Dale Hampton, also an olderman and dedicated student in Ambassador College who served God's churchesPart of the near-overflow 5500 who were in constant attendance for the eight days of theFestival. There will iust be room enough next year to sea t the 7000 anti c ipa ted to at tend.

The three ministers now holding this higher rank are Mr. GeraldWaterhouse, Mr. Benjamin Rea, and Mr.Carlton Smith. This recognition of theirprogress in Christ's ministry was a mosthappy occasion for us all!Mr. Gerald Waterhouse has left withMr. Ted Armstrong and Mr. FrankLonguskie to establish a branch office,

Let us pray earnestly forMr. Waterhouse as he goes to the land"down under" to assume this most important post in God's service.Mr. Benjamin Rea, on temporary leavefrom Ambassador College, left immediately from the festival for Saltillo, Mexico. He is studying there at a universityin order to earn his Ph.D. degree. W efeel this to be both advantageous andnecessary for the important jobs that lieahead for Mr. Rea in God's work andcollege. Meanwhile, he has had to makemany Spanish broadcasts ahead which

I listened to many religious programs from many denominations and felt I got some good out ofeach. That's why I didn't turn the dialthe night I turned on the radio and gotyour program. I l istened to several 'sermons;' the more I listened the more Iwanted. However, I knew Californiawas quite full of different fanaticalcults and was a little leery that thismight be one of those. You see, yousaid several things that didn' t coincidewith what I had been taught. However, when you said to send in for The PLAINTRUTH which included your autobiography, I wanted to find out more aboutthis man who dared preach these things.I was not going to change my beliefsjust on someone else's say so. Now, Iam convinced that you are a sincereand an appointed man of God and Iam now trying to lead a true Christ ian life."

My eye was healedbefore you had time to get the letter, but this is what I want to tell you: Ihad this infection in my eyes eight yearsago. I have taken every kind of shotthe doctors could think of to give me-because my husband and son said ithad to be or I would lose my eye. Butthis time I had more understanding. Itook God at His word. My eye washealed in less than three days. I thankGod for His wonderful love and whatHe has done for me. Can you imaginehow my husband and son looked afterthe things they said to me about thatkind of ' faith stuff'?"

Editor's Comment: These are only afew of the many hundreds of letters received each day tha t tell us of the greatchanges God's message is making in thelives of people. Let's pray that such blessings shall continue to grow as this workexpands into every country.

"Now I have more of a purpose inlife and spend part of my time in Biblestudy and listening to The WORLDTOMORROW.Life is a loc more fun now, and I amlearning to enjoy my play, enjoy mywork, enjoy my study, enjoy the wholeday."I read in your autobiography thatthe way to save others was to showthem more and more love, kindnessand patience. Then I realized that 1hadn't been acting in a Christian-likemanner at all. Now I try always to actlovingly to others and to always honormy father and mother, and I pray constantly tha t I might always be able todo this. I also am learning to controlmy tongue and to speak kindly or elseshut up."I have read what you said aboutchildren not being baptized unt il theyare fully matured, and I hope that Idon't t urn out like some of the examples you gave; tha t is, being interestedin the things of God now and of doinggood, but then later changing and slipaway from God and the Bible into eviland misery."

We are verygrateful for all He has done for us andgive Him all the praise, but we do wantto most sincerely thank you for presenting the truth to us for we realize thatwe mnst first heat hefore we can helieve and repent. Don't Cheat Yourself! Are you still cheating yo urself out of some of God's blessings?

Many of you are a nd d on' t realize it. Here is why!by L. Leroy NeffGODSChurch has just celebrated thegreatest Festival of Tabernaclessince the time of the apostles.Thousands came to this great spiri tualfeast, and yet, in spite of this vast multitude, many were not there that shouldhave been!

Cheating YourselfGod has commanded His people toattend the Feast of Tabernacles and torejoice there. But, many of you are stillCHEATING YOURSELVES from enjoyingthese wonderful festivals.God tells us many times in His Word

tha t by obeying His commands, happiness and joy and all kinds of blessingsinevitably result. There is a juy in serving God, and keeping all of His commandments . By obedience to God'scommands, we not only receive spiritualand physical rewards in this life and inthe world tomorrow, bu t others of God'sChurch share in our blessings as a resultof our ohpclience. But no t all are obedient! You may ask, "What am I disobeying?" Some of you do nor follow God'svacation plan for His people. Most ofyou already know about this vacationplan, and have read about it in the GOOD

NEWS Magazine. 1 yo KNOW to doGod's will and do it not, to YOU it isSIN!Others of you have been baptizedmore recently and would not yet knowabout this wonderful plan. We need toexamine God's Word on this vital subject so that we may all know and practice it.

God's Vacation PlanGod has commanded His people toassemble on His annual festivals. Buthow can we afford to go to these festivals' The answer is found in Deut.

14:22-27.God here instructs you to save our foryouf'selj a t enth of your income-a "second tithe"-for you to spend at Hisfestivals. This second tithe is for you! Itis a different t ithe from the first t ithe asexplained in the July GOOD NEWS. Thefirst t ithe commanded of each Christiangoes to the support of the gospel work. The first tithe does not belong to you!It is for the spreading of the gospel tothe world as a witness before the endcomes. The "second tithe" is for an entirely

different purpose. Notice! "Thou shalttruly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. And thou shalt eat before the Lord thyGod, in the place which He shalt chooseto place His name there and if theway be toO long for thee then shaltthou turn it into money and shalt gounto the place which the Lord thy Godshalt choose" (Deut. 14: 22-25) .Some say that the way is too far forthem and do not go. God knew this. That is why He made provisions forthose who live far away to turn theirsecond t ithe into CASH (verses 24 and25). They are no t to stay at home tokeep these festivals. They are to use thiscash to go to the place God has chosenand to rejoice there in God's presencewith the brethren.Yet, many of yOll c1 ic1 not go and rejoice as God has commanded you at thisrecent festival. What was your excuse? You probablycan think of a thousand and one reasonswhy you could not obey God, but thefact remains, it is only by obeying Godin all of t he se things that we will receivethe eternal reward and joy that comesfrom obedience.Consider this test of your spiritualgrowth.

Are You Growing Spiritually? Each year those on the baptizing tourscome in contact with various scatteredmembers of God's Church, who havebeen baptized in past years. They reportthat the ones who are not attendingGod's festivals are usually not growingspiritually.Yes, they have all kinds of excuseswhy they don 't come. And yet these excuses do not "excuse" them in God'ssight! In a few cases, of course, it is notphysically possible for a person to come

to rhe Feast. God understands. But thesefew cases are exceptions.God specifically commands all of themen in His Church to appear beforeHim (Deur, 16: 16). They are given firstresponsibility of attending. But they areto go there and rejoice with theirfamilies. In some cases, God has nor yet calledthe husband, bu t has called the wife torepentance and conversion. Even in suchcases, ir is srill possible for many of thewomen to come to the festival. Theirhusbands are not antagonistic and would

willingly permit them to go to thefestival. On rhe other hand, some wives havehusbands who are completely antagonistic to God's way of life. Such a manmay not permit his wife to go to thefestival.God has called us to live at peace withall men where that is possible. He hasalso commanded that the women be insubjection to their husbands, in the Lord.Since God has not absolutely commanded all women to go to the festival, those women may have to r emain athome if such a problem exists.God has also called some of the poorof this world. As a result, a few of thosein God's Church do not have each yearan adequate amount of second t ithe topay the necessary expenses of going tothe festival. I t requires mouey to travela distance, and it also costs addit ionalmoney to supply family needs away fromhome. In such a case, where a man hasfaithfully saved all of his second tithe, ifthere is still not enough money, heshould save this money and go the following year.

Don't Cheat Yoursel fOthers, however, should be saving this

second t ithe and do nor do it. I f you aresuch a one, you are cbeating yourseiit-;and disobeying God!You may believe that you have somany expenses that you are not able tosave this tithe. In other words, you feel tha t God hascommanded something that is impossibleto do. How wrong! God does not command anything from us that is impossible for us to do, assisted and empoweredby the Holy Spiri t.

If you have not been saving your tithebecause of this reason, you need to sitdown and analyze your problem verythoroughly. I f you think you are notable to save a second tenth of your income, then you are lil'ing beyond Y01rmeans. You have made a very seriousmistake somewhere. Possibly you arel iv ing in a home which COStS more thanyou are able to afford with your income.Possibly you are spending too muchfor food. Many people are very wastefulwith their food, and spend a lot of moneyon things which do not nourish them, and yet are very high priced. Such foodsas prepared cereals, canned goods, expensive meat cuts, delicacies, and des-

I f you have been ~ p e u J i n g toomuch money on expensive "processed"foods, you should plan to spend yourmoney for less "de luxe" l iv ing. Often ,less expensive cuts of meat are morenourishing. Some families have beenable to cut the ir food bills in hal f by justfollowing these simple suggestions.Others spend too much on clothes. Bybeing a wise thrif ty buyer, c lo th ing expenses can sometimes be cut drastically.Where a person has a low income, hecan often find satisfactory clothing, which still has much wear, in some ofthe used clothing stores.

I f God has not yet p rospe red you, itmay be because you are unwisely usingthe money that He has g iven you. Examine your budget, decide on a courseof action and then carry it out. There is no excuse for disobedience toGod's laws. Your prob lems will not besolved by disobedience. They w111 besolved by obedience!I f you are one of those who do notcome to the FC8st of T:'lhernaclf's and yetcould come, you should repent of thisJill! How can you ever expect to enterGod's Kingdom? You cannot grow spirit uullv as yOll sltollkl'If you do not go to the Festival, youdo not receive the "spiritual food" whichis very necessary to your Chr is tian development and training. You are notlearning to live together in peace andharmony with God's people. I f you arenot learning such viral lessons, how canyou ever expect to be able to go to aplace of safety? Then, you will have tolive with God's people twenty-four hours" day for three and one half years! Youneed to learn how to get along withGod's people now. Some still ask the question, "If we saveGod's tithe, also the second tithe, howwill we have enough money to buy ourclothes? Who will buy our food, paythe taxes, our insurance, and all theother bills which nearly every householdhas?"God very plainly and explicitly statesIn Matthew 6:25-54 that if you are seeking His Kingdom FIRST, then all of thesephysical necessities will be cared for.Yes, if you obey God, if you seek HisKingdom first, if you obey the first, second and thi rd t ithing laws, you willhave what is needful. God will supply

yOll with the food, clothing and othernecessities that you need.Faith WITH Works

Along with this faith you must haveworks, too. You cannot spend or budgetyour money foolishly, and still expect

The GOOD NEWSGod to rain down l11nrk'y from heaven. Each of us mus t do our part. Most, if notall, people have been taught wrong economics in the home. Money is not spentwisely. Many are financially involved beyond their ability to pay. Some are lazy and can't hold a goodjob! We need to repent of the se gravesins, and pu t our financial affairs inorder. The problem t ha t many still have isthat they are trying to serve two masters."No man can serve two masters: forei the r he will ha te the one, and love theother; or else he will hold to the one,and despise the other . Ye cannot serveGod and mammon" (Matthew 6:24).Yes, some of you are still serving thegod "mammon," that is money. Somestill have the "love of money" ( I Tim.6: 10). Are you one of these? Is the loveof money and what it will buy keepingyou from obeying God in regard to thetithing laws? I f so, and you do not repent, you may find yourself completelyshut out of God 's Kingdom.New Testament Examp le fo r Tod ay

The New Testament Church faced thesame problem that we do today in re8:Jrdto the support of needy widows by thethird tithe of the people . You will findthis mentioned in I Tim. 5:16. "If anyman or woman rhar believer h 1Iavewidows, let them relieve them, and letnot the Church be charged; (burdened)that it may relieve them that are widowsindeed,"From this it is plain that the Churchis responsible to care for the financialneed of the widows who cannot supportthemselves by any means. This cannotbe done from the tithe which goes tospread the gospel to the world. Nor is itto come from the "second ti the ." It mustcome from the "third tithe" fund.

If you are new in the Church, you possibly do not know t hat God has commanded an additional tithe. It may seemimpossible at first that God could expectso much from His Church. And yet itis very plain and clear. Notice Deuteronomy 14:28-29:"At the end of three years thou shalt

bring for th all the t ithe of thine increasethe same year, and shalt lay it up withinthy gates: And the Levite, (because hehath no part nor inheritance with thee,)and the stranger, and the fatherless, andthe widow, which are within th y gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied;that the Lord thy God may bless thee inall the work of thine hand which rhoudoest."

Here is a tithe tha t is kept just oncein three years. It is for the widow, thefatherless, the sojourner who are unableto support themselves. This cannot inany way be confused with the first tithe

November, 1959which is g iven to God's work, or thesecond tube which is used by each personat the festivals.

God has even made it possible forus lO have two years to set our "financialhouse" in order before we must pay thatthird tithe dur ing the special "year oftithing." He does not requi re this of theChris tian for the first year. Now is thetime to prepare, if you are learning aboutthese commands for the first time.At first it may seem impossible tosave both of these additional tithes, sincefor some it seems almost impossible topay God His first tithe! What a lack offaith! God has plainly instructed usthrough Jesus Chris t (Matt. 6:25-34)how to make ends meet, how to receiveour food, clothing and necessities of life.

Notice the example in Acts 6. Hereis an account of the Church t ak ing careof the widows. Since the apostles neededto spend the ir t ime in prayer and study, deacons were appoint ed to take care ofthis matter. Here was the administrationof the third tithe in action. Here washow the New Testament Church tookcare of the widows. God still uses thisthird tithe to take care of the needywidows in His Church today.

Holy to GodIn spite of the plain and clear scrip

uu es regarding the third tithe, somehave still refused to obey this command. They have not removed from theirpremises the "hallowed things ," whichare holy to God (Deut. 26:13). Areyou one that has held back this tithethat is holy and sacred to God, keepingit for yoursel]? I f so, you had betterfear and t remble before Almighty God,until it is removed and you are obedient.Read Deuteronomy 26: 12-15, whereyou will see the seriousness of this command with God. I hope that you willobey God in this, so that you too canrejoice before God, and ask God for theblessings that come from obeying Him.

A Lesson to LearnThe second letter of Paul to the Corinthians gives us many lessons regardingthis matter of tithing, and offerings.Paul recounts to the Corinthians inchapter 8, how the churches in Macedonia, in spite of their "deep pover ty"were liberal in giving for the needs ofthe Jerusalem Church. This was in addition to the tithes that God hadcommanded.Paul further mentions in chapter 9

thai if we sow sparingly, we will alsoreap sparingly. Verse 6. We should notgive of our offerings sparingly, nor ourt ithes grudgingly. God loves a cheerfulgiver. He owns all th ings , and He canbless us far more with spiri tual and(Please continue on page 9)

AUSTRALIA, at last!At last God has OPENED THE DOOR to Australia! With theW orld Tomorrow program on the air six times weekly, it has beennecessary to establish offices in Sydney, Australia. Here, FIRST

HAND, is the exciting news!Sydney, AustraliaOVER nineteen hundred years ago,Jesus Chr ist said, somewhere, somehow, there would be a\'(IORK OF GOD on this earth. He said this work of God would befulfilling His own commission to HisChurch to "preach the GOSPEL to everycreature" (Mark 16: 15). He describedHis Church as the "li tt le flock," havingbur "UTTLE strength," but before whomHe would set an OPEN DOOR! "I knowthy works: behold, I have set before thee:111 open door, and no man can sbut it,.for thou hast a little strength, and hastkept my word, and hast not denied myname!" (Rev. 3:8).

A NEW DOOR OpenedAnd now-God has opened anotherdoor before His work! For the first t imein all history, the very Gospel Jesuspreached is being thundered with greatpower to the great "down under" continent of Australia! That Gospel has beenhidden from the eyes of men for over1800 years! It hasn' t been preached, It

has all but been totally forgottenburied under false doctrine, pagan customs and traditions-and has been neglected so long that today it soundsTOTALLY NEW, startlingly different toeveryone! But now God is sending the SAMEgospel to Australia. Recently, our agentsin New York were able to open time forthe "World Tomorrow" program sixtimes each week on nearly all of the network stations of the AmalgamatedWireless of Australia. This means a tremendous leap forward-it means new listeners, increased mail, and many thousands of new readers ofthe Plain Truth magazine. With this powerful new door of radioopened before us, it has become imperative to establish offices here in Sydney. And so, I have come here, together withMr. Gerald Waterhouse, an ordainedminister of God's Church, and Mr. FrankLonguskie, both of whom spent over twoyears in our overseas office in London. Both men are graduates of AmbassadorCollege. We are beginning preliminary groundwork toward locating and equipping

by Garner Ted Armstrongadequate offices for receiving and distributing mail, sending our the bookletsand the Plain Truth magazine, and theBible Correspondence Course.Sydney is a beautiful city, built aroundblue harbour areas, over rolling hills. It'sa city of parks and golf links, beauti fulbeaches and scenic wonders. It's a lively, progressive city, the largest in Australia, and a major port of the world. As such, itis ideal for the offices of the very workof God! Here, we can have available allthe printing, mailing, and broadcastingequipment and facilities we will everneed. God has miraculously led us to justthe right people in beginning this mostimportant office here - and we havefound the Australian people to be warm, friendly, and very cooperative in everyway!

As a WITNESSBut some may ask-"Why are you going over to Australia?" And the answeris simple! Jesus Christ told His trueservants, "Go rather to the lost sheep of

the house of Israel!" (Mar. 10:6). Australia is a part of ISRAEL! Weare thesame people! Not only do we have thefeeling of kinship and brotherhood forone another, bur we come from the samecommon ancestor-Abraham!This great continent is peopled by ourown brethren! They look the same, theyhave the same general customs, they havethe same language! Here is a whole continent-as large as the Uni ted Stateswhere a major part of ISRAEL is found! But then, are we seeking to bring Australia a "new religion?" The answer isabsolutely not! We are bringing thesame religion of Christ, the rel igion ofthe Apostles, the religion of the Bible!Jesus said, "And as ye go, preach, sayingThe Kingdom of heaven is at hand!"(Mat . 10: 7). His command was, "Goye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"(Mat. 28:19). And He said, "This GOS-PEL OFTHE KINGDOM shall be preachedin all the world for a witness unto allnations, and THEN shall the end come!"(Mat. 24: 14).Notice it! He said, "for a ioimess]'

NOT to bring a new "brand" of rel igion,NOT to begin a new "movement," NOTto try to "get Australia saved!"World CHAOS Ahead!

We're living in frigh ten ing times! You've never seen times like these before-not in all this earth's history. YourBible foretells a time of world troublesuch as has NEVER before occurredwhich is going to strike IN YOUR LIFETIME! For this reason Christ has commissioned His servants to WARN Hispeople of the impending disaster theyare bringing on themselves! The Australian people live in a vast, sprawling continent to the south of theteeming hordes of Communist ic Asia,They have a slogan now, "Populate orPerish!" They know the inevitable outcome of present trends means the threatof millions upon millions of Japanese,Chinese, Mongols, Southeast Asians andothers pouring into their land-bringingthe slavery of Communism and the diseases of Asia with them. Most of the

people live within the major city areasprincipally Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane,Adelaide and Canberra, the capitol.NewSouth Wales and Victoria hold the majorportion of all the population. To thenorth, the vast, almost endless stretchesof Queensland, Northern Territory andfurther to the west, ofWestern Australia, lie like a beckoning mat of welcome tothe crowded Asiatic territories. The Australians are concerned. They know thehorrible outcome might well be Communist domination! They are determinedit WON'T HAPPEN!But they haven't yet heard-from thevery Word of God, what the surprisingOUTCOME is really going to be!God is going to TELL them! "Ephraimshall be desolate [Ephraim is Great Britain} in the day of rebuke: among thetribes of Israel [Australia is a part of thetribes of ISRAEL} have I MADE KNOWNTHAT WHICH SHALL SURELY BE!" Thisstartling prophecy was foretold byHosea, hundreds of years ago--and notuntil JUST NOW has it ever begun to befulfilled here in Australia.God says He'll MAKE KNOWN to His(Please continue on page 12)

(Continued from page 3)God is adding new ministers to HisChurch, and is giving increasing abilityand power to many who are already inHis service!

Inspired SermonsThroughout the festival, the powerand ioisdom of God's Spirit was manifestin every sermon delivered by God's ministers! It is certain that those who had attended other church "camp meetings"were impressed by the spirit of unity, ofloue, and of spiritual understanding exhibited in every single sermon. Thisunity and understanding comes from Al

mighty GOD whom we serve!Mr. Armst rong welcomed everyoneon opel11l1g night and demonstrated thatwe had hundreds of people present fromall over the United States and from manyforeign lands as we-ll. Tn his npening sermon, "Why are we here?", Mr. Armstrong brought out tha t most people arejust rictims of ci rcumstance and do not

The GOOD NEWSunderstand the real purpose in life. Theydo not understand that purpose becausethey have lost the knowledge of God'sHoly Days which he then explained tous.

The first afternoon, Mr. Ted Armstrong brought an outstanding sermonentitled, "Who Was Jesus Christ?" Heshowed exactly how the people of thisworld have been BLINDED to the realChrist of the Bible.

Sunday, Mr. Roderick Meredithproved-point by point-WHY we mustkeep God's festivals and described theirbasic meaning and purpose. That afternoon, Mr. Herman Hoeh gave a revealing sermon on, "Why Does God HideHimself?" He showed that wheneverGod DID reveal Himself in olden times, men didn't l ike it! They pleaded to hearfrom a man instead. But when they hearonly from God's prophets and ministers, then they make the excuse that they willbelieve only when they hear from God"direct"!Setting the theme of the entire festival, Mr. Armstrong cont inued in hisseries, "Why Are We Here?" He showedthat there was to be a great fall ing awayin the last days f rom the truth , and thatChrist was coming to restore the truthto this earth during the happy millennium. later, he showed ll!hy Jesus went

November, 1959LO heaven, Then he showed that Jesuswill come again to restore the kingdomto Israel, to rule the nations of this earthand to restore the WAY of God on thisearth which alone will bring us realpeace, and joy and happineSJ!Very helpful sermons on Christianl iv ing and the problems of overcominghuman nature were delivered by Mr.Raymond Cole, Mr. Dean Blackwell, andMr. Wayne Cole, Mr. Gerald Waterhouse brought out feelingly how weshould rely more completely on the tremendous sacrifice which Jesus Chr is tmade for us! Mr. Norman Smith delivered an outstanding message on familyproblems and the need for the properspiri tual atmosphere and the leadershipof a converted father in every home.

On the final Friday night, Mr. RoderickMeredith brought a message showing inclear detai l what it really means to bebo rn into the very family and kingdomof God.Through the festival, Mr. Ted Armstrong continued his messages with powerful sermons on prophecy, on the"experience" of really be ing changedand CONVERTED, then a message on thetechnique of training your children, andclosed with a sermon entitled, "let's Be

One in the Faith!" In this message, hebrought out dozens of clear examples of

How to Win FriendsInfluence People and

ance. A true Christian will keep himselfwell-groomed and his clothing will beneat and clean whenever possible. Theprinciple of cleanliness is taughtthroughout the Bible and it is the responsibility of God's people to be cleanin both body and dress. This principle of cleanliness shouldalso be carried over and applied to theappearance of our home and property. The home of every real Christian will beone that is neat, clean, and orderly. Dowe put things back in their proper placeafter use and do we train our childrento do the same? Or do we carelessly leaveeverything where we last used it, thusteaching our children by this wrong example to do likewise-creating clutterand confusion.God is not the author of confusion( I Cor. 14 : 33 ), and our homes andproperty should be kept in good appearance so that our unconverted friends andrelatives can see God's way of life practiced and, thus, be glorified. The conduct of our children is another way by which we can set an example for others. Children should betaught to honor their parents by beingcourteous, speaking politely and beingobedient. A child should not be allowedto "sass" or speak impudently and disrespectfully to his parents. Parents andchildren alike should eat with propertable manners and even at those timeswhen guests are not present. When children and young people aretaught good manners and proper etiquette so that it becomes a habit withthem, a str ik ing impression is made onthose in the world who are accustomedto seeing disobedient children, childrenwho are disrespectful and "rowdy" andthe delinquents fostered by today's society. When a saleswoman of a Pasadenastore commented recently about the students from Ambassador College, she especially noted that they were "verymannerly." Mayall of God's people bethought of in the same way.A working man can be a "light" byapplying the principle of working withall his might at whatever job he has todo (he . 9: 10). He should work diligently, fervently, and do work of thefinest quality. A man should respect his

by Robert C. Borakerstrivings about the law; for they areunprofitable and VAIN (Titus 3:9). Inverse 8, Paul had said that it was thegood works which were good and PROFITABLE unto men. It is not our wordsthat influences anyone, but it is ourWORKS-the kind of life we live-thatbrings results.

Be an Example in CONDUCTAlong with good works, we are also

instructed to be an EXAMPLE of the rightway to live as taught by the Word ofGod (Matt. 4:4). Paul told Timothy,"Be thou an EXAMPLE of the believers,in word, and conversation [correctlytranslated CONDUCT or BEHAVIOR}, incharity [love}, in spi rit [att itude}, infaith, in purity" ( I Tim. 4: 12). Noticethat we are to be an example in CONDTJr:Tt How we c on du ct ourselves inevery phase of life is the key in how toinfluence unconverted people.I t is so easy to tell people how theyought to live, but it is much more difficult to live that way ourselves-to "practice what we preach." I t takes constantovercoming, correcting of bad habits, and CHANGING from the way we oncelived.Once we are converted, a changeshould take place in the conduct of ourlife. The Apostle Paul describes thischange in Ephesians 4:22-24, "You mustlay aside your former habits, your oldself which is going to ruin through itsdeceptive passions. You must adopt anew attitude of mind, and pu t on thenew self which has been created in likeness to God, with all the uprightness andholiness that belong to the truth"(Goodspeed translation).Knowing that we are to let men seeour good works, to set a good example, and to become "holy in conduct" (I Pet.1:15- the word "conversation" shouldbe translated as conduct), just how doesa person accomplish these things in hisday-to-day life? Perhaps many of youhave read these same Bible scripturesmany times, but have not known HOW

to apply them to your life. Here, then, are concrete examples:One way by which you can be an example and can apply the principles ofChris tian living, is in personal appear-

You Arc A "Light"!Christ compared His disciples to a"light" in a darkened world. Just as a

city on" hil l c: lt lnnt he' hid, so ,,1so is "lighted candle seen by all in the houseunless it is covered, "under a bushel."With this illustrat ion, Christ goes onto say, "Ler your light so shine beforemen, that they may see your GOODWORKS" - not your good arguments orconstant preaching-"and glorify yourFather which is in heaven" (Matt. 5: 1416). As the disciples of Christ today, weare the "salt of the earth" and the "lightof the world." Are we effectively "salting" the earth and does the world seeour "light?"When we realize that no man cancome to Jesus Christ unless he is called

(John 6:44), we see how futile and useless it is to try talking someone intoconversion. It is by good works that youcarry out God's will and attract peopleto the Bible way of life. Throughouthis epistles, the Apostle Paul stressedthis need in the lives of God's people. He instructed Timothy to be "rich ingood works" ( I Tim. 6:18). He toldthe Galatians not to be weary in welldoing and to do good unto ALL MEN(Gal. 6 :9-10). He also told Titus thatGod's people would be ZEALOUS ofgood works and that those who believein God would "be careful to maintaingood works" (Titus 2:14; 3:8). We areto be DOERS! (Rom. 3: 13).Along with this instruction, Paul cautions by saying, "But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, contentions, and

DID YOU ever try to show God'sTruth to amember in your familyor to a friend? It is a natt/raltendency for a newly converted person-a mere "babe in Christ"-to desire toshare the t ruth of God with family andrelatives. Most realize before long that there isabsolutely no use trying to cram "yourreligion" into their minds. You cannotargue friends and relatives into conversion. You cannot argue or talk ANYONE into conversion! This is what you cannot do, but here'swhat you CAN do as a lay member inthe Church of God!

Winning Unconverted HusbandsMany of you married women have un

converted husbands and it is only naturalto want your mate to be converted andin God's Church. Notice the instructionof Peter in this regard: "You marriedwomen, in the same way, must be sltb-missire to your husbands, so that anywho refuse to believe the message maybe won over withOltt argtement rnroughthe BEHAVIOR of the ir wives when theysee how chaste and submissive you are"( l Pet. 3: 1-2, Goodspeed translation). It is by the chaste and sebmissiue BEHAVIOR of a wife that an unconvertedhusband may be influenced in acceptingthe way of God and be converted. Itis no t by argument or by constant"heckling."

Proverbs oI gives other instructions asto how a woman can be a proper wifeto her husband. A man wants his wi feto give him attention, to be a/lectionateand to be a conipunio to him. Muchgrief and family trouble is caused by awife who becomes so wrapped up in herBible study and prayer that she no longerhas any time for sat isfying the needsof her husband. He begins to think ofher as some "religious fanatic."To win your husband to conversion, don't hibernate yourself from him inyour religious pursuits. Certainly don'tneglect your study and prayer, but re

member also your obligation to yourhusband. Love him by being willing tosatisfy his desires and needs. And by allmeans do not condemn or look downupon h im as being reproachful and thelowest of sinners, or lift yourself up because you may think you know mo retruth than he.He is unconverted, yes, but so were weall at one time. We show a wrong ex-ample by continually voicing our dis-approval of the world and its people, abominations and sinful ways. Theseopinions arc best kept to ourselves.Peter also instructs husbands to beconsiderate of their wives - to "dwell

with them according to knuwledge"-nor foolishly or on impulse-"givingHONOUR unto the wife as unto theweaker vessel, and as being hei rs together of the grace of life" (I Peter3:7) .A man must be careful not to force hisunconverted wife into accepting thetruth of God. Instead of force, a husband should use lo i:e, AFFECTION andCONSIDE/?ATlON. realizing that shehas her r ights and freedom of belief. Many other points could be given onfamily re la tions if space permitted, bu t

How should we view the Americancustom of celebrating ThanksgivingDay?The Thanksgiving holiday was establ ished in comparat ively recen t years. Itis, of course, not mentioned in Scripture- b u t the princip le of attending andcelebra ting nat iona l hol idays is madeclear in scripture.Thanksgiving Day was established by

the early colonists, not by any divineauthority. But this in itself does notmake it wrong to celebrate with goodfellowship. Notice the example of JesusChrist. In John 10: 22 we find that Christattended the "Feast of Dedication,"which was established by th e Jews yearsbefore to commemorate the purificationof the temple at jerusalem. That day wascelebrated on the anniversary of the daytha t the reestablishment of Divine workship occurred after Antiochus Epiphaneshad been vanquished and th e t emplepurified about 165 B.C.Jesus' attendance at that annual holiday dearly illustrated that it is not wrongto attend or celebrate a national holidayest ablished for an honorable purpose. There was nothing wrong in the Jew'scelebrating the dedication of rhe templeand giving God special gratitude on thatday. God led Esther and Mordeca i toestablish the Feast of Purin in commemoration of the miraculous deliver ance of the Jews from bloody Haman( see the last chapter of Esther). The national holidays celebrated bythe Jews has, of course, no special significance for the non-Jew-just as

Thanksgiving Day holds no spec ial significance for our non-American brethrenscattered around the world. God permitsthese customs only if they do not getou t of hand. What God expressly for-bids is the observance of pagan festivalswhich taere invented as deliberate sub-stitutes for the Plan and Program ofGod. We are not to adopt in God'sworship those customs which the heathen used in serving their gods. But it isproper and fit ti ng for na tional leadersthese will be helpful until we can havemore articles on this subject in thefuture.

Expressing Love to WorldIn ,tll these things we can set a goodexample by living according to every

u.ord of God. In our contact with thepeople in the world we should remember

to set aside time for the whole nation tog ive God special thanks for his uniquebounty to this na tion.Thanksgiving Day was first celebratedby the Pilgrims in 1621 after their firstharvest had been ent irely reaped. On

that day they paid tribute to God for alltheir bountiful and undeserved materialand spiritual blessings. ThanksgivingDay gradually became neglected and wasrevived during the Civi l War as a dayof special national thanksgiving for preserving this nation. This Americanthanksgiving day does no t have a paganorigin despite the claims of certainfr inge sects. It is not usually celebratedwith pagan ceremonial customs in honorof pagan traditions and gods, as areChristmas, Easter and Hallowe'en. I fthis national holiday becomes corrupted, then it would be h igh t ime to reject it- bu t it generally is not so celebratedtoday. This day of national thanksgivingcan be enjoyed by our brethren in America with an especially ueep understand

ing because we know tha t o ur personaland national prosperity have come solelyas the result of God's promise to Abraham-and as a result of Hi s choice ofthis nation as the springboard for hisChurch in this generation. Our brethren in other nations do notcelebrate this holiday any more than wecelebrate the Jews' feasts of Dedica

ti on and Purim. What we all do celebrate are those divinely appointed HolyDays and Festivals established by Godin Hi s Word for all men. We neverregard a national holiday with the samerespect, awe and reverence as we doGod's Sabbath and His Holy Days. National holidays are just that-holidays,not Holy Days They are a time ofsecular pleasure and grati tude, nothingmore. But in the midst of the Thanksgivingseason, let's 110l neglect Paul's commandin Ephesians 5: 20 to "give thanksalways." Let's not make a mockery ofGod's special blessings to this nation.

the command which says, "Thou shaltLOVE thy neighbor as thyself" (Rom.13:9) .This is our respsonsibility and isthe best way to influence people. Nogood is accomplished by giving God'sWord to those not interested or by cast

Page 12turn against us with persecution" (Matt.7:6),We certainly are not to fellowshipwith the WAYS of the world and worldlypeople, We also should not have a "superior feeling" or a bitter feeling ofantagonism and critical cynicism towardthem! Just as God loves the PEOPLE inthe world and sent His son to reconcile

them to God (John 3: 16), we alsoshould love them and NOT hate or despise them because of thei r sins.LOVE your unconver ted relatives, friends and neighbors-but DO NOTFELLOWSHIP WITH THEM IN THEIROWN WORLDLY WAYS! It is all right tofellowship with them by being an ex-ample of r ight l iv ing instead of arguingwith them or condemning them fortheir carnal ways! Try to HELP themgam unders tanding of God' s way byyour example-NOT by criticism andfinding fault.Have you ever wondered how to express love toward your unconvertedfriends and relatives? Remember thatunconverted people are still CARNAL andthey express love to each other in amaterial way. They express love and affection in this material way by givinggifts during the Christmas season and onbirthdays. After repenting of these pagancustoms and dispensing with them, howm.any of you went to the opposite extreme and now don't give gifts at all?As a result, what do your unconver tedfriends and relatives, or mate, whounderstand your love by receiving a gift, think of you? It's not wrong to give gif ts ! Certainlydon't give them on the pagan holidaysand birthdays, bur give them at othertimes during the year and that will helpunconverted people to better understandyour love toward them. By doing this, you will show them that there is a bet-ter way and time to give gifts-a timewhen it can be done our of real love andaffection, rather than because of obliga-tion.

Answering QuestionsBesides setting a good example andloving our neighbor, we also have theresponsibility of being "ready always to

give an ANSWER to every man thatasketh you a reason of the hope that isin you with meekness and fear" (I Pet.3: 15). Paul further instructs, "Use wisdom in dealing with outsiders, makingthe most of your opportunities. Alwaysput your message attractively, and yetpointedly, and be prepared to give everyinquirer a fitting ANSWER" (Col. 4:6,Goodspeed) .Notice that the emphasis is on au-sucriug. qrcestiou: when they are askedyou! If you really are 1iving by everyword of God, setting the right example,

The GOOD NEWSthis new and c1ifferent way of life willprovoke questions from unconvertedfriends and relatives with whom you arein contact, I t is our duty to be able toanswer questions in a racrful way thatwill arouse interes t in the truth of God.If we have the wisdom and commonsense that God gives us, they will haveconfidence in our abili ty to answer theirquest ions and help solve their press ingproblems.Yes, this will requi re study of God 's\'Vord and prayer to have the guidanceof the Holy Spirit. It will take persever-ing effort in order to be an outstandingexample and the best neighbor in thecommunity and to continually show lovetoward others through good works. When unconverted people see our goodworks and the example of God 's way oflife, some will have a desire to shareGod's blessings. And if they ask us questions about the pu rpose of our life andwhy we believe in l iv ing this way, onlythen should we explain the truth of God-only when it's welcomed and whenthey want it and are willing to opentheir minds and receive it. Don't generally talk about religion unless they, theunconverted, bring it up.But we must be careful , brethren, thatwe don't go to the opposite ext reme andsay nothing to unconverted people.
