    WHY The Church Ruledon Make-Up

    by Herbert W, Armstrong

T HIS question of lip-stick and othertorms ot make-up had to be settled. Some in the church felt verydefinitely that "make-up is wrong; it'sworldly." There was in some casesan at titude of pre judice and accusationagainst those who wore it.But others insisted, "I can't see anyharm in wearing lip-stick. I think makeup is all right." But perhaps the largestnumber of women said, "Well, I'm goingto wait and see what the ministers decide."

Must Understand PrerogativesThere was still another attitude: "I'mnot going to let the ministers tell mewhat to do. I'm going to study this ou tfor myself, and make my own decision. My religion is not be tween me and theministers-it's between me and GOD."All these different at ti tudes lead to

CONFUSION-and ultimate division inGod's Church. They serve the devil, not our God.First of all, then, we need to getSTRAIGHT in our minds, once and forall time, this ma tte r of PREROGATIVES!To illustrate what I mean: Healingthe sick is GOD'S prerogative, not man's.God says "I am the God that healeththee." And He says "Thou shalt haveno other gods before me." To go toMAN, or a man-developed "SCIENCE"(falsely so ca lled) for healing, then, isto break the very first commandment .HEALING is the p re rogative of GOD--

and God is a JEALOUS God-jealousof His prerogatives. It is the prerogative of GOD, not ofman, to set in mot ion the LAWS respecting marriage, and what constitutesadultery. When civil courts of MANwri te our laws permi tt ing divorce andremarriage, these legislatures and courtsare actually in contempt of the HIGHERCOURT OF HEAVEN. Those who followtheir invalid laws and who divorce andremarry are living in adultery, and areGUILTY before God, regardless of man'slaws.

On the other hand, there are prerogatives that have fallen to MAN as an individual. God has set before every individual the way of blessings and eternalLIFE on the one hand, and the way ofcursings and DEATH on the other; andGod says to YOU, as an individual:CHOOSE!

That decision is YOURS, and yoursALONE-personally. God will not makeit for you. He will not permit theCHURCH to make it for you. That'syour prerogative.Hue God also has laid prerogativeson HIS CHURCH! God RULES His children, in many ways, tbr His Church,There are some decisions to be madeby the CHURCH, and what God's calledministers in His Church bind on earthis bound in heaven, and what theyloose is LOOSED in heaven! God's ministers are never free, however, to actAS THEY HUMANLY PLEASE, but only

according to the WORD OF GOD, and asLED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD.It's very impor tant that we realizethe JURISDICTION of the CHURCH.Problems arise in which individualmembers are NOT COMPETENT toJUDGE. There have, for example, beena number of divorce and remarriageproblems presented before the ministersof God's Church. The parties directlyconcerned felt unable, or incompetent ,to judge-and lacked the AUTHORITYto render the decision that wuuld beBOUND in heaven, and unquestioned.God' s ministers have AUTHORITY insuch cases.Occasionally DOCTRINAL questionsarise. The various members cannotagree. Some "see" it one way, others"see" it the other way. Unless settled, such doctrinal issues can lead to controversy, and division in the Church.Especially where group activities areconcerned. Even individual ministersmay be divided. This could introduceconfusion, and ruin God 's Church. You find such a case history in the15th chapter of Acts. Cer tain teacherscame from Judea to Antioch, wherethere was a large Church."Except ye be circumcised afte r themanner of Moses," they taught, "yecannot be saved."But the apostles Paul and Barnabusdisagreed. Some of the brethren believedone way, some the other.

Page 2brethren! This is MIGHTY IMPORTANT!Had not Chr ist pu t GOVERNMENTin His Church-and a way of SETTLINGsuch doctr inal disputes as to WHAT issin, and what is NOT-as to WHAT isnecessary to salvation, and what is not-these bre thren would have becomehopelessly divided. Some would havefollowed these Judaizing teachers-somewould have followed Paul-had theylooked only to MEN-had they said,"Well , my salvation is between me andGod-I 'm going to study this thingout for myself-" or, "I'm going tofollow the preacher I like best."But what did they do? How didChrist, the HEAD of the Church, governin this matter? What PROCEDURE hadChrist set in ',US CHURCH to preventsuch quest ions leading co division anddestruction of the Church? They appealed to the HEADQUARTERSCHURCH AT JERUSALEM. God had aHEADQUA ~ T E R S CHURCH, where thelargest number of His apostles and evan

gelists were assembled to consider andSETTLE the matter, as LED BY THE HOLYSPIRIT.They made the decision. Or rather,CHRJST made it thru them. The decision was bound in heaven. In this instance, the brethren at Ant ioch Churchapparently accepted the decision unaniruously, and division was prevented. But supposing there had been one ortwo dissenters? Supposing one or twohad said: "I disagree. I'm no t going tolet the Headquarters Church tell mewhat to believe or what to do." Suchdissenters would have inevitably caused

division.THEN WHAT? The apostles, or evangelists, pastors or elders in charge atAnt ioch would have been then obligedto obey Rom. 16: 17: "Mark them whichcause divisions and offenses contrary tothe doctrine which ye have learned, andAVOID THEM." In order to avoid them, the ministers would have been forced todisfellowship them and prevent their attending Church, and forbid any memberto receive them into his home, or tolisten to them in any manner, on painof THEMSELVES being disfellowshipped. That may seem like a harsh, sternaction-but it's GOD'S GOVERNMENTwhich He holds His ministers responsible for enforcing. Our failure to haverealized this, and to have enforced thisin the mother Church at Eugene, Oregonyears ago, did spli t that Church. It resulted, finally, in half the former members, embittered, soured, in a wrongspirit instead of that of God's HolySpirit, being disfellowshipped - nolonger members of GOD'S CHURCH, noIcnger participants in HIS WORK, nolonger hav ing the JOY of His salvation, bu t only the dregs of bitterness, jealousy, and hate. May God forgive us

The GOOD NEWSfor not having realized these factsabout the GOVERNMENT which GOD setin His Church, and not having enforced it years ago when perhaps onlyone memher should have had to beput out.God helping us, we shall not againrepeat that mistake! It may have costprecious lives we loved and served, their eternity! I would now rather offendone or two disgruntled dissenters thanthru a false sense of "love" have themfinally drag perhaps dozens or scores orhundreds into the lake of fire withthem!

Counting Pentecost an ExampleSUCH A MATTER ISTHEOBLIGATIONTO "COUNT" THE 50 DAYS that determine the day of Pentecost. God gave Hisannual Holy Days, not to individualMAN, as a separate, personal individual

    - bu t TO HIS CHURCH. When God instructs us to "count" to the day ofPentecost, that instruction is given toGOD'S CHURCH, nat to separate individuals in it! God therefore puts responsibility and AUTHORITY for thecounting, and setting the date, on Hisministers and His Headquarters Church.

I t was because of inability and incompetency by individuals to know how toCOUNT properly that division wascaused in the Church at Eugene, Oregon.Pentecost is not a festival God appointed to be kept in private, but an ASSEM-BLY day for the CHURCH. Read Acts 2:1.THEY WERE ALL ASSEMBLED WITHONE ACCORD IN ONE PLACE-and onthe SAME DAY. Therefore it is not theprerogative of the individual to figurethe day differently than GOD'S CHURCH,and try to pul l off members after themselves on a different day, thus introducing DIVISION.Hereafter, any individuals who refuseto attend on the right and proper day,as set and determined by God's Headquarters CHURCH, as they are in turn inspired and led by GOD'S SPIRIT, and asBOUND IN HEAVEN, and who stir upcontention on that subject among brethren, leave us no alternative. They FORCEus, against our will, to MARK THEM, andAVOID THEM, by denying them entranceto God's services, and forbidding othermembers to fellowship with them, ordiscuss the matter in any way with them. Thus PEACE and HARMONY will be preserved among those in a right spirit, even tho the one or two self-willed, carnal-minded, disobedient trouble-makersare infuriated, and turned fur ther intothe gall of bitterness and resentment.

Ministers Settle IssueThis matter of lip-stick and othermake-up worn by women became justsuch an issue. Like the matter of whether circumcision was right or wrong, nee-

July, 1955essary or unnecessary-so we found notonly women, but also men divided onthe issue.Just as there were no clear-cut Scriptures: "Thus saith the Eternal: " on thequest ion of whether IN CHRIST circumcision was still necessary in the dayswhen "the apostles and elders came together for to consider the matter" at Jerusalem, so we find it today. There is no definite "Thou shalt," or"Thou shalt not" in the Scriptures on thesubject of lip-stick, JUSt as there is noneon the subject of TOBACCO.There was a current rumor that Evangelist Raymond Cole wanted his wife towear make-up. I had, with some qualifications, expressed a few general principles on the subject, saying that I wouldmake no final and definite statementuntil the ministers could counsel together and make it clear and binding. Somewomen said: "I don't want to do asBrother Armstrong said-I want to follow Brother Cole" on this question. Andso it went.WHAT A SHAME, brethren, that thereshould be ANY who want to follow favored MEN! Are you not yet carnal, when you talk like that? Have you neverread TCor. 3: 1-7?So I called Raymond Cole by long distance, and asked him about the rumor. He informed me he had NOT said hewanted his wife to wear make-up---butrather that he had been non-committalon the subject until the ministers atHeadquarters could come together andmake a definite and positive declaration.

The ministers were thus forced tocome together, "for to consider the matter," even as our predecessors had done(Acts 15:6). I acquainted RaymondCole with the decision God had led usto, and he fully concurred. Then it became my duty to explainbefore the congregation assembled hereat Headquarters the Church decisioneven as I shall, by a separate article inthe next number, explain this decisionto the WHOLE membership. So far as Iknow there is not a dissenting voicehere at Pasadena Church.Th e Really BIG Issue

The really BIG issue is not whether"lip-stick is wrong" or whether it isright. As a matter of doctrine the principle involved is the SPIRIT behind its use.Make-up is not either sin nor righteousness: There is no direct "Thus saith theEternal." When I was first convened, Ifaced the question of smoking. Therewas no specific "Thus saith the Eternal."I asked myself WHY I smoked. I asked itin the light of the SPIRIT of God's Law- the underlying PRINCIPLE of the Law.I was honest with myself in my answer.Tobacco is not of itself sin-but an hon-(Please continue on page 5)

Does GOD Have aHeadquarters Church Today?

Where is the central church of divine authority to which scatteredmembers and local churches should look for TRUEDOCTRINE or to settle disputed points?

by Herman L. Hoeh(EDITOR'S NOTE: God's called andchosen apostle and ministers at HisHeadqua rte rs Church have rende red adecision setting forth the SPIRIT OFTHELAW in respect to a disputed point -the use of lip-stick and make-up by thewomen of the Church. A full explanati on of tha t decision will appear in thenext issue. However, God has not laidon His ministers in authoriry in HisHeadquarters Church the obligation toARGUE the disputed point , now settled, with various members who either donot yet understand or may be contentious. It is merely because it was a disputed point, which many were unableto rightly understand, that the decisionhad to be rendered. The IMPORTANTissue is that we understand and acceptGOD'S GOVERNMENT in His Church. Therefore, this article, which appearedin the October, 1953 issue, is repeated.)

INCREASING numbers are now beingadded by God to His Church. Theestablishment of local congregationsis ste.adily increasing. God 's church isgrowmg.BUT it is inevitable t ha t w ith suchwonderful growth, there should also benew problems. Decis ions must be madeto settle questions and confirm the faithof new converts.God's church is a holy church. Noperson can " join" it. We are inductedinto it by God through receiving and

being led by the Holy Spirit. In God'schurch there is not to be confusion, antagonism, or quarrel ling . "For Godis NOT the autho r of confusion, but ofpeace, as in all churches of the saints"( l Cor. 14:33).Although we who have been trulyadded by God have the Holy Spi ri t ofGod dwelling in us and guiding us,yet we are human. We still have to master and overcome our fleshly minds andpassions. We have not yet a ttained perfection in character, which is our goaLWith human natu re s tr iving agains tGod's Spir it in us, it is inevitable thatquestions and controversies will arisethat disputes would flare into bittercontentions unless God should providea way to preserve the church in uni ty .

Problems Are InevitablePaul wrote that "ther e must be alsoheresies among you, that they which areapproved may be made manifes t amongyou" ( I Cor. 11: 19). There will alwaysarise contentions between those whohave not total ly yielded themselves toGod and those bre thren who are fully

obedient to the faith. Almost the entireNew Testament is devoted to the wayto handle these disputes . to bring aboutharmony in the spirit of love, that thework of carrying the gospel to all theworld may be completed through thearduous zeal of ALL the members ofthe church of God.In order tha t no disharmony shoulddevelop today, let us notice how Jesusgoverned the church of God at its inception in 31 A.D. Remember thatJesus Christ RULES our church today inthe same manner as He ruled it fromthe beginning. He does not change inconduct. "Jesus Chris t the same yesterday, and today, and forever" (Heb.13:8).

    Church at Jerusalema "Headquarters Church"

Th e church of God at Jerusalem wasa "headquar ter s church" to whom alllooked for TRUTH! Other local churchesoften became confused. Controversiesand disputes on certain points entered. It was to the Jerusalem church, whichhad God's authority, that they all turned.Let's notice it.In Acts 15: 1 and 2, we read of adispute that arose in the local churchesin Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. In theirmidst were Paul and Barnabas , both ofgreat authoriry in the church. Yet towhom did the brethren turn in order tosettle the dispute? TO THE HEADQUAR-TERS CHURCH-JERUSALEM-WHERETHE OTHER APOSTLES AND ELDERSWERE GATHERED!At Jemsnlem th e ques tion would beconsidered and decided-why? Becausethe brethren knew tha t Jesus had givenspecial authority to His ministers whowere at the headquarters church-Jemsalem.Jesus conferred upon His representa-

rives the keys of the kingdom of Godand authority toguide the church throughthe inspi ra tion of the Holy Spir it. Theycould "bind ," or forbid certain things;and they could "loose," or permit certainthings. In Mat thew 18:18, Jesus giveshis ministers the authority to make bind-inf!. decisions, based on the revelat ion ofGod and under the inspiration of theHoly Spirit, in order to preserve theuniry of the church in love and truth! This explains the reason that thebrethren mentioned in the book ofActs turned to the headquarters church.at Jerusalem to settle rheir questions anddisputes. They knew Jesus had promised to guide his apostles into all truth(John 16: 13). The apostles had beenthoroughly trained and fitted for the irresponsibilities through the personal correction, reproof and ins tructi on of Jesus. The apostles in turn had thoroughlyinstructed the elders and the congregation at Jerusalem in the way of truth. The church at Jerusalem was kept pureby the constant admonition and correction of the elders and apostles so thatit might be the example to all otherchurches. Christians, like all human beings, need to learn by example. In NewTes tament times the churches in Gentile nations "became followers of thechurches of God which in Judaea are inChrist Jesus" ( I Thess. 2: 14); and thechurches in Judaea were to patternthemselves after the headquarters church, the church at Jerusalem. The congregation at Jerusalem, recogniz ing this responsibiliry, acted in hercapaciry. The apostles and elders madethe decisions and they were binding onall other churches (Acts 15: 22). Theysent le tte rs to the various local congregat ions expla in ing what "seemed goodto the Holy Spirit, and to us" (Acts15: 28). Again, in a previous situation ,when it was known that certain individuals had preached in Ant ioch and newsof " these things came unto the ears ofthe church which was in Jerusalem ...they sent forth Barnabas, that he shouldgo as far as Antioch" (Acts 11: 22) .

Notice how the Jerusalem church, acting in her capaciry, watched over, cor-

recred, and even intervened in the affairs of her daughter churches. No other church could claim thisri ght which God had conferred on theJerusalem church alone. The Example at Ephesus

Let us call to mind the example of thechurch at Ephesus, where Paul hadspent three whole years instructing andtraining the elders and the brethren. Heknew even at his departure that falseteachers and disloyal elders would soon"arise, speaking perverse things, to drawaway disciples after them" (Acts 20:30) .This is exactly what happened. Ephesus, and all the local churches in thesurrounding Roman province of Asia, were soon turned against Paul personal-ly by false teachers and disloyal elderswho sought personal power and prestigethemselves (I I Timothy 1:15). Thechurch was torn by divisions and controversies. It was not the example afterwhich all the other churches were toparrern their conduct. It was not thecentral or headquarters church fromwhich the gospel of the kingdom orgovernment of God was sent forth intothe world.Jerusalem Church Was HeadquartersThe Jerusalem church was the headquarters from which the apostles carriedon their work of evangelizing the world. It was to the Jerusalem church tha t theapostles and Paul often returned aftercompleting their journeys.Jerusalem remained the headquarterschurch during the entire apostolic period, when the gospel was first carried to

The GOOD NEWSthe known world. The apostolic churchwas given lWO 19-year cycles in whichto spread the gospel of the Kingdom tothe nations. During the first cycle, itsspread was confined to Asia; but at thebeginning of the second cycle, Godopened a great DOOR for the spread ofthe gospel into Macedonia in Europe! The meaning of this DOOR is definedin II Corinthians 2: 12-13. "I cameto Troas to preach Christ 's gospel, anda DOOR was opened to me of the Lord"-a means to preach the gospel abroad. The gospel then spread until 69 AD. -during the second 19-year cycle. In thatyear the organized power of the churchto preach the gospel abroad was stopped. The central church at Jerusalem wasforced to flee immediately before thefinal. siege of the city by the Romanarmies.

Today's Church ProphesiedNow, just before the second coming

of Christ to restore peace to this warweary world, God has again given Hischurch two 19-year cycles in which tocarry the gospel of the kingdom to thewhole world in fulfillment of Jesus'commission. Just as the early churchwas granted two 19-year cycles FOL-LOWING THE ASCENSION OF JESUSTOHEAVEN, so now He has granted Hischurch two 19-year cycles PRIOR TOHIS RETURN TO THIS EARTH in whichthis gospel must finally encircle theglobe.Jesus gave a message for His churchtoday (Rev. 3:7-13), a prophetic lerrertel ling precisely what we would be accomplishing at this very moment. Weare duing the same work as the earlytrue church--earrying the gospel of thekingdom to the world. We have lesshuman power and strength, we are

gospel abroad to Europe and finally theent ire world in this last 19-year cycle. What wonderful and momentoustimes!BUT, as the work of the church progresses, and as new converts are beingadded constantly and new local congregations established, where is the centra lchurch to which the scattered membersand church congregations should lookfor TRUE DOCTRINE, or to settle disputed points? The AnswerMade Plain

The church at Jerusalem was theheadquarters for carrying the gospel. Atthat church were those who were especially called and tra ined by Jesus, whowere filled and led by the Holy Spirit. That church was not torn by faerionsand false doctrines, by disputes and controversies. In its midst was the mainbody of ministers to whom Jesus hadcommitted the authority to make bind-ing decisions! In our day, when the same gospel isbeing preached, there is again a head-quarters church, PROVEN BY ITS FRUITS-a church to whom you scattered brethren can rum in times of doubt and controversy, a church to whom God hascommitted the authority to make bind-ing decisions in order to maint ain theuniry of the Spirit in the bond of love(Eph, 4:3).This central church is at PASADENA!From the church at Pasadena emanatethe broadcasts and the magazines thago to the world. It is at this church thathe main body of minis ters e ither constantly remain or continually return. APasadena is a church not torn by strifeand division, bur one thoroughly instructed in the faith, composed of faithful ministers and members. At Pasadenthere is the Spirit of God-there iLOVE and PEACE-there is completagreement, harmony, uniry, under theleadership of Christ. The church at Pasadena, in exercisinits God-given AUTHORITY as the headquarters church, has already made binding decisions which had dissolved thedoubts and problems of many brethreand even of local congregations. It is marvellous how God guided anddirected His church through the pasyears. Eirher this istrue, or this is NOT God 's true Church! If I were a lay member, or even a minister or minister's wife, and felt in myheart tha t God had not guided His ministers at the Headquarters Church insuch a decision, and felt I could not accept it, then there would of necessity betwo alternatives open to me. First, Ishould feel impelled to present to thosein authority and to no one else my reasons for believing them to be in errorand then if they rejected my reasons, and I felt they were not led of God, Iwould be forced to conclude this wasNOTthe true Church of God, but an impostor. And I should be obliged immediately to wi thd raw from it, and begin toseek the TRUE Church of God, in andrhru which GOD is working, carrying HisGospel and last warning to the world, healing the sick, convert ing preciouslives, feeding the flock on the true spiritual manna.

TEST of Obedience! It is repor ted that there have been avery few-thank God, only a very few-cases of dissension on the Spirit-led de-

The GOOD NEWScision of God's Church on this matter ofmake-up, and even of private discussionsand voicing of contrary opinions. This, then, becomes an issue whichFAR transcends th e question of make-up.DOESGod rule thru His Church? DOESGod inspire and lead His apostles andchosen ministers? If the government ofGod is to break down at this point , thenTHE GOVERNMENT OF GOD IS DE-STROYED IN THIS CHURCH. The life ofthe Church is at stake. Therefore, stepsare being t aken promptly to deal withany such personal actions tend ing tocause division, contrary to the doctrinestaught by God 's Church .On most doct rines there is no need ofa ruling by God's called and chosen ministers at His Headquarters Church. TheBible is i tself plain on whether stealing, lying, murder, or idolatry are sin. Buthere was a matter on which neither thewomen nor the men were clear. Theywere divided. There was no definite"Thus sai th the Eternal ." There is a verydefinite SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE involved, vital to the salvation of women. Yetmany women were unable to see it.God's minis ters finally were forced tostep in and DEFINE THE SPIRIWALPRINCIPLE INVOLVED. That is what wehave done. There is not a doubt in ourminds that we were led of God. The decision is GOD'S decision. The decision is BOUND in heaven.

The decision is not yours, as an indi-

God continues to miraculously healthe sick! Two of our ministers reportthe mos t happy experience of meetingtwo of our listeners in San Diego-alady and her 76 year old mother whowas miraculously healed just recently. She had a serious hear t ai lment and herblood pressure had risen dangerously toover 200. At her age, the doctor told herdaughter, it was unl ikely that she couldrally and live much longer.Though being fairly new to the t ru th ,they decided to pu t their faith totally inGod and t ru st Him to heal. They sentfor an anointed cloth, and-as oftenhappens once we have exercised faithand done our part-God began to healeven before the cloth arrived. Here we quote from part of herdaughter' s thankful let te r: "I asked you

to pray for my mother a few weeks agoand it seemed I not iced an improvementfrom the time you received the let ter andbefore the prayer c lo th arrived. Whenthe prayer c loth came I did as instructedand also burned it and a week later mymother's blood pressure had dropped to

July, 1955vidual, to make. TIle decision has beenmade BY GOD, and thru HIS CHURCH.

The one decision for you to make iswhether you are yielded to the GOVERN-MENT OF GOD. The re is no plain, specific, direct "yes" or "no" in the Bibleabout make-up. Nevertheless God's attitude is revealed. No p la in le tter of thelaw. But, in these days of Grace, underthe New Testament, we are to obey thelaw according to the SPIRIT-the principle involved-not the let ter only. Individuals proved unable to define andapply the PRINCIPLES, according to theSpirit. This question, therefore, becomestbe prerogative of the CHURCH to ruleon, not of the individual.

The Church has ruled. Now it doesbecome a definite, specific "yes" or "no."The question, now, is whether you as anindividual have really SURRENDEREDyour mind and heart to God-whetheryou are OBEDIENT to Him where Hespeaks--or whe ther you p re fe r to conclude this is NOT the true Church ofGOd-NOT bearing the fruits of Godnor carrying on the WORK OF GOD forthis hour! This is a vital TEST for some, as towhether they really have surrendered toGod-really have repented-really havethe Spirit of God, or are yet CARNALand unconverted, want ing their ownway, wanting to be CONFORMED TOTHIS WORLD, rather than TRANSFORMEDby the Spir it of God.

175 and the doctor was amazed and saidit was a miracle. We checked again aweek ago and it is now normal, be tween145 and 150 for which I do thank Godand you for praying the prayer of faithwhich heals the sick. Truly our God isthe same today, yesterday and foreverand I am so thankful for it all and thatsurely God does heal. May God's richestblessings be upon you and yours, Mr.Armstrong."

Our ministers reported, after visitingthis lady and her mother, that it had evenstrengthened their faith to see the joyand thankfulness of this lady and hermother who was now remarkably recovered. This is only one example of manysuch instances of healing every week.God continues to bring forth good"fruit" through His work! These blessings should bring encouragement, andbe a source of rejoicing and increasedfaith and zeal for us all. Truly, our Godis the same yesterday, today, and for-ever! He will always heal IF we havereal faith and LIVE by that faith.

and other seasonings, replace cover andsimmer for 20 or 30 minutes.Good canned barbecue and chilisauces may be purchased at most grocerystores. Watch the labels for the kind offat used in them, if any. Used sparingly, these sauces can add zest to many meatand egg dishes.A popular food with Americans iscrackers. Different kinds are oftenserved with soup and salads or as asnack. Unfortunately, most crackers aremade of l it tle else than white flour. Byfollowing this recipe, you can make delicious as well as healthful crackersyourself.

the flours, baking powder and salt together into a bowl. Mix in the wheatgerm. Cut the butter into the flour aswhen making pie crust. Add the water, blending well with a fork, but avoidinghandling the dough too much.Turn the dough OntO a lightly flouredboard and shape it .into a ball. Fold the egg whites, then thewhipped cream or evaporated milk intopeach mixture and return to refrigerator to chill. Makes 6 large servings. If you have no immedia te use for theegg yolks which will be left, they maybe added to the Peach Mallow also.Beat the yolks with 1 tablespoon of water and add to the gelatine whi le it isheating over the boiling water. For a different flavor, 1 teaspoon almond extract may be added to thepeaches after they are mashed. Ifchilled evaporated milk instead of creamis used, it shoukl have been chilled atleast 12 hours before being whipped. For such purposes, it is a good idea toalways have a can of evaporated milkchi ll ing in the refrigerator .A good way to use the left-over yolksis in mayonnaise. Mayonnaise made by

the following recipe keeps well in a refrigerator.Easy Mayonnaise

N ow p our 1 cup cold water into apint jar and add 6 tablespoons flour or3 tablespoons cornstarch. Shake jar until no lumps are left. Pour flour mixture into a small pan, and heat over amedium flame, stirring constantly as itcooks. A rubber spatula is good forthis purpose.

When the flour mixture is thick, pourit all at once into the egg yolk-oil mixture and beat with a rotary egg beaterfor two minutes . If the beating is donewith an electric mixer, use the highspeed. Makes about 2 cups of mayonnaise.

le t mayonnaise stand for a half aday before using it to let the flavorsblend. This may be varied by addingchopped pickle, pimiento, onion juiceor crushed garlic. For fruit salads, addfru it juice or cream. These are only a few recipes to giveyou an idea of the type of foods thatare suitable for preparation in advance.Probably, in your own collection youhave some that could be used this way, too. _A HeadquartersChurch Today?(Continued from page 4)

moved to Pasadena in 1947. Many of themost faithful brethren came to Pasadena, t oge the r wi th Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong. Here at Pasadena, AmbassadorCollege was founded to provide adequateminis terial help in spreading the goodnews of the kingdom-the governmentand rule of God. Already seven ministers (Editor 's Nore: thirteen at the present time) have been ordained, most ofwhom constantly remain here because oftheir duties. They have all been thoroughly trained in the TRUTH.Instead of having confusion, as wefind in so many denominations, God'sway is a way of love and order, a wayof obedience to His wil l as He reveals

Page 8it in the Scriptures-His revelation toman. I t is the government of God, notthe will of men or of a dictator professing to bear God's authority. Pe te r explains God's rule in the church verysimply: "Feed the lockof God which isamong you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; notfor filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;nei ther as being lords over God's heri tage, BUT BEING ENSAMPLES TO THEFLOCK" (I Peter 5:2-3).

Who Shall Determine Datesand Places?EDITOR'S COMMENTARY: Consider, now, one concrete example.Does God intend each individualmember to decide where, when, and howgroup activities of the whole churchshall be held? Or does Christ, the living HEAD of His Church, determinethese things and inspire the apostlesand elders whom HE has chosen and installed in office, at His headquarters

Church, to know His truth and set suchdates, places, and ways of observance?Jesus truly said we may KNOW people by their fruits-and we may knowthis answer by the fruits of experience. As an illustration, just one of God' sannual holy days falls on a day whichmus t be calculated by COUNTING. Allothe r holy days are set calendar days. But when we come to the very daywhich pictures our Church in this ageas God's first fruits of salvation, and thesymbol of the reception of His HolySpirit within us-the day called "Pentecost," we are instructed to COUNTfrom a definite calendar day.Are all people competent to makethis calculation? Certainly Gud wouldnot have each individual calculate it forhimself unless every individual is com-petent to come to the r ight date! Some, nor knowing that the word"from" means "away out of," and intheir ignorance of the English languageabsurdly supposing it to mean "beginn ing with," count only 49 days insteadof 50. Others, not understanding theHebrew language in which Lev. 23 was

wrirren and ignorant of the fact tharthe Hebrew "Sabbarhon" means "weeks,"

The GOOD NEWSand is SO translated in the Jewish translation, count only 49 days to the "morrowafter a Saturday," instead of counting 50days to the morrow after the seventhWEEK. And these observe the same dayobserved by the devil's churches!

"Private Interpretation" Leadsto DivisionWhat are the FRUITS of this "private

interpretation," by individuals whomGod has not called as His instrumentsin ruling HIS CHURCH? The fruits, are DIVISION, dissension, confusion, bad feeling, resentment, LOSS OF THEHOLY SPIRIT! Those who have followed these practices have PROVED bythe FRUITS of experience tha t this isnot God's way.

JESUS CHRIST RULES HIS CHURCH!His Church must meet on the right day,and all on the SAME day, and the "placewhich the Eternal thy God shall choose."God docs not rule thru individual laymembers, but they are ruled BY Himthrough God's own chosen servantswhom He has educated and trained asHis leaders.Such matters as deciding whether theTen Commandments are binding today, whether the blood of Chr is t will, uponrepentance and faith, r emit our sins, must be seen, and understood by eachindividual personally--otherwise howcould one repent of his transgressionsif he did not know what that transgression consisted of; and how could he believe, unless convinced in his own mind, personally, of the efficacy of the bloodof Christ? Each individual is commanded toSTUDY the Scriptures, so that he maylive by them as a WAY OF LIFE. Thetruth is that most of God 's children donot study the Bible enough. But on all mat ters affecting the COL-LECTIVE GROUP ACTION of the entireChurch, there can be no division, orelse the whole Church will be dividedand a house divided against itself cannot stand! Therefore, God has placedGOVERNMENT in His Church to RULE insuch matters, and to PUT OUT all suchcontentions and causes for divisionsfrom His Church! In all such matters,

July, 1955and even many decisions affecting private conduct, God RULES in His Church, thru Jesus Christ, the Head of HisChurch, and in turn thru the apostles andelders whom HE has called and trainedthru experience and education for theoffice. We are in the last days-the "TIMEOF THE END"-when knowledge is being increased, and God is revealinghitherto hidden truths in His Word. I thas taken time, and experience, for thosewhom God has called as His instruments in the rule of His Church toGROW to the fullness of such knowledge(I I Pet. 3: 18); and human reluctanceto assume such authority, prior to thet ime God made us see it, has resul ted insome sad experiences in the past.God commands us (Eph . 4:27) notto give place to the devil, who deceivespeople into practices that produce confusion, and division which would KILLGod's Church! The time has come when, seeing clearly what God has revealed,we must be obedient to Him. HisChurch must be rid entirely of contention, strife, or division! The time hascome to FEAR GOD, and to TREMBLE before His Holy Word! The POWER ofGod was manifest in backing up theauthori ty of His chosen apostles andelders by striking dead Ananias andSapphira!God's servants must act in humilityand all love and patience, and in WIS-DOM, first knowing the will of God-butthey must ace, by God's power and authority!

The church at Pasadena is your head-quarters church, and as her children, allthe brethren scattered abroad should feelfree to ask for the advice and counselof her ministers and elder brethren. This is God's way to preserve love andharmony, to preserve the faith in pur ity, to preserve the TRUTH, among God'speople. Through Christ as living HEADof the Church, and from Pasadena headquarters, the government of God is administered with divine authority in rendering decisions, in binding or loosing,in ruling the churches of God in ourtime.
