Salvation! If Christ were not to return, YOU would never gain eternal life!Satan could still thwart the PLAN of God. With this issue we

WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE:

XASTOUNDING prophecy is recorded in the seventh chapter of

Daniel revealing a mighty religious powt:r which pt:ISt::l:UIt::S God'sChurch. This power-symbolized by a"little horn"-has t hought "to changetimes and laws" (verse 25).

In Revela tion 17 it is p ic tu red aga inas a GREAT WHORE-an apostate church-which rules over nations and deceivesthe whole world. This great church hascaused the nat ions to change time inevery possible manner. It has changedthe day, the week, the month, the year!

God is the AUTHOR of time. He gaveman the sabbath as a memorial of creation. The sabbath is designed to keep

us continual ly in the knowledge and th etrue worship of God. But Rome changedthe day! She substituted a coun te rfe itday of worship.

Rome also fastened on a deceivedworld many pagan holidays. ARE THEYCOUNTERFEIT, TOO?

l e t us understand. The sabbath wasmade for man-when man was created.Centuries later God also called out achurch as His ins trumenta li ty in themidst of Sa tan' s realm. When did th atchurch begin? In the wilderness, beforeMt. Sinai (Acts 7:38).

The church is God's in str umen t forcarrying Out His PLAN. Just as manmust be kept in knowledge of the true

God, so the CHURCH must be kept inthe knowledge of God 's PLAN. As Godgave the sabba th to man, so He gave an-nual sabbaths to the CHURCH to keep usunderstanding Hi s plan. They commenced before the old covenant wasmade (Exodus 12). They were commanded forever.

The annua l sabba ths p ic ture the different steps in that plan. The wholestory of redempt ion is re -enac ted eachyear by hallowing these days. As thefirst event in redempt ion is the dea th ofthe lamb of God, so the first of theannual days is the passover. Ou r complete deliverance from sin and ourobedience to the commandments is pict ured by the second festival-the feastof unleavened bread. Any church tha thas forgotten this festival has departedfrom God 's law (Ex. 13:9).

So that we would never forget thatGod is choosing only a few in this ageto whom He has impar ted His HolySpirit, God gave a third festival-Pentecost, or feast of firstfruirs. This festivalpic tu res the coming of the Holy Spiritand this whole church age- the firstsmall spiritual harvest of souls.

But God 's PLAN of redemption doesnot stop here. Christ must return toresurrect the saints and to establish the

kingdom of God. I f He were not to return, YOU could never finally be saved!le t us now understand the next stepsin God' s p lan of redemption.

Feast of Trumpets"And the LORD SPAKE . . . saying,

In the seventh month, in the first dayof the momh, shall ye have a SABBATH,a memorial (not a shadow) of blowingof trumpets, an HOLY CONVOCATION.Ye shall do no servile work therein"(lev. 23:23·25).Here is pictured to us that NEXT

blessed event in God's redemptive Plan,

when Christ shall COME again, in clouds, with a SHOUT, with the voice of thearchangel , and with the TRUMP OF GOD( I Thes. 4: 14-17). It shall be "at THELAST TRUMP for the TRUMPET SHALLSOUND, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall all be changed"( I Cor. 15:52) .Unless Chri st returns to RESURRECT

the dead we would never gain eternall i fe- i f the re is no resurrection " thenalso those fallen asleep in Christ haveperished" ( l Cor. IS: 18).

Christ directly intervenes in world

affairs at the seventh or last trump(Rev. 11:15-19). A trumpet is a symbol of war. He comes in a time ofworld-wide war-when th e nat ions areangry! As soon as t he work of gatheringin th e FIRSTFRUITS (pictured by PENTECOST) is completed at th e end of t hi spresent age, rhen Christ will begin toset up again the tabernacle of David(Acts 15: 16 ) - t o set Hi s h an d a ga inthe SECOND TIME to recover the remnant of His people (Isa. 11: I l ) - t osearch ou t and to FIND His lost sheepthat the ministers of th e CHURCHEShave FAILED to search ou t and seekand find and save during this period(Izek. 34:1-14).

Notice exactly WHEN this takes place!"And it shall come to pass in that day,tha t the great TRUMPET shall be b lown, and they (Israel) shall come whichwere ready to perish . . . and shallworship the Eternal in the holy mountat Jer usa lem" (I sa . 27: 13 ) .

W bell will Israel be regathered? At the sound of th e TRUMP-at th e second coming of Christ. Because th echurches have forgotten the festival oftrumpets many think that th e return ofa few Jews to Pa lest ine now is th e fulfi llment of this prophecy!

Christ 's direct intervention in worldaffairs will be the n ex t gr eat ev en t inthe Plan of Redemption. As this feastday occurs on th e very FIRST DAY ofthe seventh month, so th e event it pictures will o ccur at th e very BEGINNINGof the SEVENTH THOUSAND YEARS!

And perhaps th e glorious second com

ing shall occur, in whatever yea r it maybe, on THIS VERY DAY of th e Feast ofTrumpets!-who knows? While we cannot say, yet cannot we see thi s possibi lity? The crucifixion was upon the Passover DAY-the very DAY! The HolvSpirit came, beginning th e selecting o'fthe FIRSTFRUITS of salvation on theVERY DAY of Pentecost . Ha d ~ o tthose120 disciples been OBSERVING t hi s annual Sabbath-had they no t been AS-SEMBLED there in holy convocationcould they have received that blessingof th e indwelling presence of th e HolySpi ri t? Repea tedly Jesus warned us toWATCH! regarding Hi s second coming.Could it be possible that, unless WE areobserving th e Feast of Trumpets, as thefirst century Church of God Was observ-ing Pentecost, that we shall NOT beready, or caught up to mee t H im ? Wedo no t -we c annot , of course, s a ybut we do ask the question. Is it notpossible? Let us humbly and wil ling lyyield to walk ob edi ent ly in ALL THELIGHT.

Th e fes tival of trumpets is a day ofREJOICING--and, as th e weekly Sabbath, HOLY UNTO THE LORD (Neh. 8:2,9: 12). Th e Leoites were to blow the

do so today as this was only a temporaryduty of th e priesthood.

Da y of Atonement, or t he F as t

Nex t, l et us read Lev it icus 23: 26-32- " A n d the LORD spake, . . . saying. . . also on th e tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a DAY OFATONEMENT: it shall be an HOLY CONVOCATION unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls (fast) . . . Ye shall dono manner of work: it shall be a statuteFOR EVER throughout your generationsin all your dwellings. It shall be a SAB-BATH of rest, and ye shall afflict yoursouls: in t he n in th day of t he mon th ateven, FROM EVEN UNTO EVEN, shal l yecelebrate YOUR SABBATH." Wonderfulmystery! At-onemen t w it h God! Manat last made ONE with his Maker!

Again, in th e 16th chapte r of Levit icus, verses 29 and 31, wher e t he symbolism of the D ay of Atonement is explained, we find it instituted a holySabbath to b e k ep t FOREVER! "And thisshall be a statute FOREVER unto you:that in th e seventh month, on th e tenthday of t he mon th , ye shall afflict yoursouls, and do no work at all, whether itbe on e of you r own coun tr y, or a st rang er t ha t s oj ou rn eth among you . . . Itshall be a Sabbath of rest unto you, andye shall amiLl yuur souls, by a statuteFOREVER."

Notice, too, in Lev. 23: 32 , t he expression "from even unto even shall yecelebrate your sabbath." Every Sabbathkeeper quo tes thi s passage to show that

the Sabbath beg ins at sunse t.I f

we believe that, then why no t KEEP th eSabbath that this very text is speakingo f - t h e ANNUAL h igh Sabba th of th eDay of Atonement, inst i tuted FOREVER?Are we consistent, when we continuallyquote this text to show when to beginthe Sabbath, and then refuse to keep th e"ery Sabbath referred to?

MEANING Pictured by DAY O FATONEMENT

The Day of Atonement pi ct ures awonderful and grea t event , to take p laceAFTER th e second coming of Christ, which th e world has ent ir ely lost sightof because it has failed to see th e tr uesignificance of these ann ual SabbathsHOLY UNTO THE LORD. It has fai led toKEEP them as a constan t reminder ofGod's PLAN of Redemption!

The symbolism is al l expressed in th ea ccount of th e event s of the Day ofAtonement, as c arr ie d ou t before th ecrucifixion, in t he 1 6t h chapter of Leviticus.

Verse 5 - "And he (Aaron, or th eHigh Priest) shall ta ke of th e Cougregat ion of th e chi ldren of Israel two kidsof th e goa ts for a sin offe ring ."

August, 1954

Vene 6 - The high priest offered a sinoffering for HIMSELF and his house.

Verses 7 and 8 - "And he shall takethe two goats, and present them beforeth e Lord at the door of the t abe rn acl eof the congregation. And Aaron shallcast lots upon the two goats; th e on eJot fo r th e LORD, and th e other lot forthe scapegoat (margin, Heb., AZAZEL) ."

Now because t hi s has no t been understood-because there are many, many, different views and opinions andideas and explanations of this, we herepause sufficiently to go into t hi s in somedetail. Let us, therefore, regardless ofo ur own f ormer convictions, study withOPEN MINDS, without prejudice, PROV-ING ALL THINGS. We want TRUTH!

Th e key to the whole explanationlies in a correct understanding of themeaning of AZAZEL. This word doesno t occur elsewhere in the Old Testament. Th e Comprehensive Commentaryhas: "Spencer, after th e oldest opinions

of the Hebrews and Christians, thinksAzazel is th e name of th e Devil, and soRosen, . . . The word scapegoat signifies the goat which went away." TheOne Volume Commentary says: "Theword ' scapegoat' in the A.V. is not atranslation." It is merely an interpreta-tion of th e supposed meaning by thetranslators.

True, the TInglish word "scape-goat"signifies " on e who bears blame or guiltFOR OTHERS." Bu t "scapegoat" is anEnglish word, and is NOT a t ransl at ionof the Hebrew word AZAZEL. The word"scapegoat" does not appea r in the Jew

ish translation at all. Hence, we must entirely dismiss this word "scapegoat," andth e meaning attached to this Englishword, for it is NOT a transl ation of th eHebrew word AZAZEL, and t he re for e itis NOT the word inspired originally.Con ti nues t he One Volume Commen-tary: "Azazel is understood to be th ename of on e of those malignant demons."

TYPES of Chr is t and Sat an

These TWO GOATS were, of course,TYPES. Noti ce, it was necessary to bedecided BY LOT, which on e was qualifiedto represent Chr ist , a nd whi ch Azazel. Some say BOTIl were qualified. Th eScripture does no t say this. Let us no tassume it. Now A LOT is a solemn ap-peal to God to decide a doubtful matter.I t is a sacred rel igi ous c er emony. It includes a SUPERNATURAL ACT of God.That is why lot te ri es an d gambling areof the devi l -an actual profaning of aholy service appealing to God.

Notice, me n were unable to decidewhich goat was qual if ied to repr esentChrist. This involved an APPEAL TOGOD TO DECIDE! "ONE lot for th e

How t o Cook VegetablesMoney alone cannot buy good health. Health comes only throughright living. With this issue, we continue publication of a series of

articles on foods.

SUMMER is here and wi th it, vegetables in variety and abundance.Vegetables, we are told, contain

vitamins and minerals that all of us needfor good health.

Yet doctors and nutritionists say thatmost Americans suffer from "hiddenhunger." Vitamin preparations are advertised in every newspaper and over everyradio. Doctors prescibe them for the irpatients. Why?

Obviously, it is not because there is afood shortage.

The answer lies in the way so muchof the food today is processed and prepared. Refin ing, preserving and shipping fresh foods long distances causemuch of the loss in food value; the restof the responsibility is with the house-wife. She is accountable for selectingand preparing the vegetables and fruitsthat the family eats. She needs to knowhow to do this so that as little aspossible of the food value is lost.

Health Begins in th e Soil

Health, of course, begins with thesoil. Those who have home gardensshould make sure the soil is fertileable to grow plan ts rich in mineral s andvitamins. Two vegetables or fruits ofthe same kind can look alike, yet onemay contain several times as muchfood value as the other. The kind ofsoil it was grown in makes the differ-ence.

The ideal t ime to gather vegetablesis just before preparing them. Vegetables allowed to stand in light or at roomtemperature gradually lose v itamins.Either chill them in a refrigerator orcook them near th e boiling point assoon as possible.

Those who depend on th e corner grocery for fresh vegetables should learnto know which vegetables have the most

health value.Generally, the morning is the besttime to buy vegetables. Then they havejust been removed from the refrigeratoror have just arrived from th e farm, andother customers have not already pickedthe best vegetables from the stock.Avoid buying wi lted vegetables. Theyhave lost most of their original vitamins.

Choose the least-trimmed cabbageand lettuce. Their vitamin content mayactually increase for sometime after harvesting. The same is true of carrotsand other root vegetables which still

have their tops and roots, providingthey are not wilted.

Buy deep yellow and green vegetables more often than pale ones-theycontain several times as much of somevitamins and minerals. Select green lettuce and celery instead of the blanched.Leaf lettuce has about three times thev itamin A value tha t head lettuce does.I f two heads of cabbage or o ther vegetables are th e same size, usually theheavier of the two is the best one.

Ripe, sweet peppers are twice as richin v itamin C as green peppers. Choosesummer squash which have a soft skinso that they can be cooked with thepeeling on. Yellow corn is bet ter t hanwhite corn because it has vitamin Avalue.

Care of Vegetables

As soon as the vegetables are broughthome they should be sorted and stored.

First wash them thoroughly undercold running water, or quickly dip themseveral times i nto fresh water. This isto remove dirt and insect sprays thatmay ding to the leaves and roots. Leavethe vegetables on paper towels or drainboard for a short while so that surpluswater can drain off. Those to be usedin salads may be dried more thoroughlyas oil or o ther dressings stick bett er todry leaves. Place such vegetables in acheesecloth bag or an old pillowcaseand sling it around a few times.

Use a stainless steel knife to tr im orcut vegetables since e ither iron or coppe r destroy vitamin C on contact, causing th e cut edges to turn brown.

Af ter they are washed and drained,pu t the vegetables in a covered refrigerat or pan. Plastic bags also make goodcontainers for vegetables stored in a refrigerator. Parsley and celery leavesstored in a closed f ru it jar keep fresh a

long time in a refrigerator. Potatoes, onions and similar vegetables with peelings require no washing unt il they areused, and need only to be kept in acool place.

Soaking vegetables is never a goodpractice. The B vitamins, minerals andvitamin C easily dissolve in water. Peeling such vegetables as carrots and potatoes and leaving them set in a pan ofwater until time to cook is one of thebest ways to start your family downthe road to vitamin and mineral DE-

FICIENCY.

Much time, not to mention food value, can be saved by cooking vegetables unpeeled. Beets may be boiled whole iftheir roots and at least an inch of thetops are left on. I f root vegetables arepeeled before cooking, the minerals andvitamins concentrated directly beneaththe skin are cut off with the peel. Theonly good reasons for peeling are if theskin is bitter, bruised or tough. All ofthe vitamin A in a cucumber is contained in its skin. For salads they shouldbe picked young enough that the skinis still tender. Then only the bit ter endsneed be Cut off, and the rest sliced verythin, never over one-eighth inch thick.

Sometimes carrots, radishes and turnips become wilted before they areused. They can be crisped by mak ing afresh cut on the root ti p and left tostand in cold water for an hour or so.They draw up water through the taproot just as they did while growing.

Preparing Vegetables for Cooking

The main reason vegetables arecooked is to soften the woody tissues. In the case of starchy foods like potatoes and dried beans, heating makes thestarch more digestible. Some nutritionists have found that cooked carrotsyielded up to 30 pe r cent more vitaminA during digestion than raw carrots.

Remember not to take the vegetablesfrom the refrigerator unt il it is time toprepare them.

The quest ion often arises, "Shouldvegetables be sliced, diced, shredded orleft whole?" Each method has disadvantages. I f the vegetable must be peeled, usually the way it will cook the quickestis the best. However, be sure to use anyjuice the vegetable is cooked in becauseB vitamins easily pass from the cutvegetable to the water. I f th e vegetableis cut into small pieces, the surface ex

posed is greatly increased. A dicedvegetable has less exposed surface thana sliced one. With more surface exposed to water or steam, more v itaminB goes into the juice. Mashing a vegetable while it is hot mixes air with it,causing a great loss of vitamins A and C.

(Vitamins A, Band C are most oftenment ioned because they were the firstones discovered and more is knownabout them. O ther vitamins t hat havebeen found behave dur ing cooking inmore or less the same ways as these.I f A, Band C are preserved usually such

from 5 t o 10 minutes. Cabbage andspinach prepared this way should be cutthin; carrots, beets, parsnips, potatoesand winter squash are best sliced. Insauteing the vegetable actually cooks inits own juice-nothing is lost in cook-ing water. Af ter it is cooked, the vegetable may be seasoned with sweet-soursauce or in o the r ways.

It is a waste of butter to use it forsauteing or frying. I t scorches easily, and the heat destroys its vitamin A.

When used for seasoning, butter shouldbe added AFTER the food is cooked.

Frying differs from saut ei ng in tha tmore oil and no water is used. Usually, frying is done when some browning isdesired such as with potatOes or meat.Eggplant is delicious sliced into halfinch slices (leave unpeeled), dipped inmilk, then in wheat germ. Lightly browneach batch on both sides in an oiledskillet over moderate heat and then remove. After all the slices are browned,

replace them in the skillet, add salt andone-fourth cup of water or milk, cover, and steam about 10 minutes.

We find in Leviticus 7: 9 that someof the meat offering was dressed in afrying pan, and in verse 12 cakes of fineflour and oil were said to be fried, butno instance where vegetables were friedis found.

The double-boiler presents anotherway for cooking vegetables, especiallythe more tender kinds. Pu t three orfour tablespoons of water in the toppa rt and br ing to a full boil over directheat. (More water may be needed in alarge double-boiler.) Drop in the vegetable and pu t the lid on. When thewater is about all evaporated, pu t theupper part of the double-boiler over water that has been brought to a boil inthe lower pan, and cook unt il tender.

Baking is a good way to cook certainkinds of vegetables. White potatoes, yams, w int er squash, carrots and parsnips are all good cooked in the oven. The carrots or parsnips are cut intolengthwise strips, placed in a hot baking dish, dot ted with but te r, and sprinkle l ightly with brown sugar or honey,if desired. They should be covered witha lid to prevent drying. The dish isheated in the oven before the vegetableis pu t into it so that the food heatst hrough faster. A cold dish filled withfood is slow to heat in an oven.

Potatoes of both varieties bake quicker and do not become dry if they areallowed to stand 15 minutes in hot water before being placed in the oven. For a crisp skin they can be wiped dryand oiled before baking.

General Rule

The general rule for cooking is to(Please continue on page 7)

have noticed how colored the water becomes when corn has been improper lycooked---covered with water and boiled. The yellow color you can see is carotene(pro-vitamin A) t hat has come ou t ofthe corn. You cannot see the other foodvalues t hat the wat er soaked from thecorn because they are not colored likethe carotene.

I f leafy vegetables like spinach arefreshly washed and started to cook overa very low flame, the moisture clingingto the leaves will provide enough mOis-rure to cook them. No other waterneeds to be added. A large batch ofgreens should be turned over after aboutthe first seven to ten minutes. Otherwise, the leaves on the bot tom will beovercooked when the ones on top arejust done.

Simmering in milk is a good way tocook fresh, tender vegetables like cabbage, corn, peas and green Iirnas. Anadvantage is that the milk proteins pre

serve the green color. (Soda shouldnever be used to preserve green colorin vegetables because alkaline solutions destroy some vi tamins .) Be careful that the milk only simmers; toomuch heat 1JJill cause it to hail O1Jer·.

Follow the same steps as for steaming. At the end of the cooking time a littleflour thickening may be added to makea cream sauce.

Sauteing is a good method to usewhen the vegetables are shredded orsliced thin. Heat one or two tablespoons of vegetable oil in a skillet orheavy pan which has a t ight-f it ting lid.

Pu t in the shredded or sliced vegetableall at once and stir until all is coatedwith oil . With dry vegetables like parsnips or carrots, add 2 or 3 tablespoonsof water. Then cover.

Cooking Methods

Steaming is considered one of thebest cooking methods. It requires potsthat have close-fitting lids. Usually uia-

te r to tb e deptb uf one-ionrib IU one-half inch in the po t is enough. Mosthousewives use too much water in cooking. The amoun t depends on how longthe vegetable will need to cook andhow much steam escapes dur ing cooking. As a rule a light weight po t needsmore water rhan a heavy weight one.

Pu t in the water, cover and bri ng toa boil. Have the vegetable ready to pu tin all at once. Pu t it in when the waterboils, cover and leave the heat fairlyhigh unti l the wat er begins to boil andform steam. Do no t bring to a fast boil.Turn the fire just low enough that thewater bubbles gently. With practice, you should be able to tell w it hout raising the lid.Carrots, turnips and rutabagas are

often prepared e it her diced or sliced.Broccoli and cauliflower should be broken into walnut-sized pieces so that theydo not become st rong from long cooking. Cabbage is good Cut into inch-thickwedges and steamed.

Some cooks have the habit of addinga li ttl e sugar to nearly every vegetablethey cook. Vegetables conta in naturalsugars and if cooked th e r ight way, there is no reason t o add sugar. Somepersons like tomatoes sweetened.

Small potatoes, beets, parsn ips andonions may be steamed whole. Cornon-the-cob is best steamed, too, exceptthat a little more water may be neededthan for o ther vegetables. Perhaps you

Has God Allo t ted 6000 Years fo rMan's Self-Rule?

The world does not understand thesigns of Christ 's return because it doesnot know about the 7000-year PLAN OFGOD.

God has allotted approximately 6000years for humanity to go its own way. These mi llenniums of human civilization are nearly over. God is about tointervene in world affairs by sendingJesus Christ. Not until He returns willwe have 1000 years of peace.

The pattern for this little-understoodplan is g iven in the first two chapte rs of

Genesis. It is the WEEK of seven days.As God originally set time in motion, man is g iven six work days followed bya day of rest. In Hebrews 4:4,11, theseventh day is mentioned as a typ.e ofthe peaceful rest-lOOO-year res t - thatwill follow the present age of humanlabor and futile struggle to maste r theearth, The mill ennium , then, is compared with a "day" of the week.

Observe tha t a fter Chri st 's in tervent ion the time of tha t peaceful rest underHis rule is specifically termed "a thousand years" (Rev. 20:4). I f the last"day" of God's 7000-year plan is 1000years, then the preceding six days whichHe has allot ted for mankind to work outhis own ideas would amount to 6000years. And this is exactly what worldevents are p roving today! Look aboutyou! It is obvious that this world iscrashing to its DOOM!

Now notice your Bible. Many Biblesare complete enough to contain chronological charts showing that human lifewas created around 4000 years beforeChrist. And almost another 2000 yearshave elapsed since-making nearly 6000years of human civilization to date. Inother words, the t rend of world eventsis now proving we are very near the

time the Scriptures have always saidChrist will return-when the probability of wor ld dest ruction would become areality (Mat. 24:22). Six thousand yearsof human history have almost been completed. Here then is proof-doubleproof- that Christ is coming in ou r generation!

The common assumption tha t man haslived on earth countless tens of thousands of years is an idle dream. Reasondisproves it. Each new archeological discovery aids in d isprov ing it. True SCI·ENCE disproves it! Strange as it may

The GOOD NEWS

seem, the theory of man's evolution isnot only unproved, bu t irrefutably disproved when we understand the facts.

The apostles did not fully understand this PLAN OF GOD when Christwas yet on earth. They thought thek ingdom would be established in the irday-after only about 4000 years ofGod's plan had been completed. Butbefore they died, the apostles knewGod's plan. Peter said: "The Lord isnot slack concerning the promise (o fChrist's coming) . . . but is longsuffering" (I I Peter 3: 9) . God is pa tien t.He has refrained from intervening inworld affairs for nearly 6000 years. Why?

RFClUse He will not intervene un tilhumanity is forced to cry out to Him forfear of sel f-extermina tion. Recall tha tthe day of Christ 's intervention and ruleis compared t o "a thousand years" (Rev.20: 4 ). Pe ter also wrot e the same thing- t h a t a day in God's plan is as "athousand years," and "a thousand 'Years"of human civilization as ONE day in Hisplanned week of SEVEN 1000-year days(I I Peter 3: 8 ) .Peter knew that Christ would come

at the close of 6000 years of humanstruggle and slavery-that God would

send Jesus Christ to set up His government in the seventh thousand years, which will usher in a time of rest andpeace-a sabbatical rest!

How marvellous t hat in our day, atthe very time th at 6000 years have almost elapsed, the world is threatenedwith extinct ion of life . And Jesus Himself said that when we see this takingplace HE WOULD COME AGAIN!

Does Ezekiel 38 and 39Refer to Russia?

Nearly all Bible students bel ieve thatEzekiel's amazing prophecy refers to

Russia. Yet they totally misapply thetime of its fulfillment. I t is referring toan invasion of Palestine after Christ hasrestored His people Israel to Palestine. This has been amply proved in articlesin The PLAIN TRUTH.

But how can we prove that Russiais the leading nat ion in this prophecy?

Notice that Gog comes "out of thenorth pa rts"-NORTH of PALESTINE!

(Ezek. 38: 15). Who is Gog and itsallies?

There is a basic KEY to understanding which nations in our day are men-

Page 5

rioned in Bible prophecy. I f we understand how to use this key, WE CANKNOW IN ADVANCE EXACTLY WHA'l'

THE NATIONS TODAY-Russia, Germany,Turkey, America and many othersWILL DO IN THE TIMES IMMEDIATELYAHEAD! This is vital to know in theseend times.

What is this key?The KEY is this: Modern nations are

naturally descendants of peoples whichexisted in Bible times. Therefore, Godused the names which they had THEN

to foretell what they would do NOW! Inmore modern times the citizens of thesenat ions have acquired other names. Butsuch a small lapse of time has occurredbetween the bearing of their formernames and their present ones that it isnot difficult in most cases to pick upancient history books and find what eachnation's name-i ts BIBLE NAME-hadbeen!

By history we can trace these Bible

named nations right down to the placethey occupy on the earth today. Thus, knowing a nation's BIBLE NAME andknowing the sureness of God's prophecy,we can understand every impor tant future move of the nations around us. Weshall now see tha t God didn't intend usto guess about Russia's par t in comingworld events!

Notice that it is Gog and Magog(Ezek. 38:2) which will come againstthe nat ion in which Christ' s capital willbe located (verse 16). Not ice againthat Gog and Magog come "out of thenorth parts" (verse 15) --where Russiais today. Can it be shown th at Russia isthe na tion which will come out of thenorth to invade Palestine? "From the accounts found among th e Arabians, Persians, and Syrians," we learn tha t thesethree nations used the names "Yajujand Majuj" (note the simila rity in thenames Majuj and Magog) to refer to"all less known barbarous people of theNorthwest and Northeast of Asia"WHERE RUSSIA IS TODAY! From McClintock and Strong, article "Magog."

Notice that Meshech and Tubal(verse 2) wi ll be associated with themin this invasion. Can we prove theseancient tribe s to be also the ancestors

of the Russians of today? Remember,Russia has been formed by the associa-tion of a numbe r of great tribes. Readwhat Professor Sayee says about Meshechand Tubal: "I n the Assyrian inscriptionsthe names appear as Tubla and Muska, and they were known to the classicalgeographers (Greeks) as Tiberan i andMoskhi." After the days of Nebuchadnezzar, the Greeks found them "furtherto the north than they had been in theage of the Assyrian monuments . . .they were forced to retreat northwardtowards the Black Sea, and it was in

this region of Asia Minor that Xcnophonand his Greek troups found their scantyremains." They had migrated NORTHinto the land we know as RUSSIA today. (From Th e Races of the Old Testa-ment.)

Having CROSSED INTO THE PLAINSOF RDSSIA the people of Meshech, called Moskhi by the Greeks, becameknown as MltSkovs. From this word"Muskov" the name of the modern cityMOSKOW IS DERIVED. The descendantsof Tubal gave their name to the T obolRiver and the city of Tobolsk IN ASI-ATIC RUSSIA.Thus we have proved by these facts

that the nat ions mentioned in this chapter of Ezekiel's prophecy are the Russians of TODAY! It will be atheist ic Russia and her allies which will comeagainst Palestine.

ETERNAL and the other lot for AZAZEL."Now one lot was for the Lord-thisgoat typified CHRIST-but the otherlot was NOT for the Lord, did NOTtypify Christ, but AZAZEL-Satan! Thesewords most naturally suggest that Azazelis the name of a PERSON, here CON-TRASTED to th e Eternal! Noti ce theCONTRAST--one for the Lord, the otherfor Azazel. Now the goat which GOD selected, thru

lot, to represcllt Christ, was SLAINas Christ, its antetype was slain. But theother goat selected by God to representAzazel was NOT slain, bu t was driven,ALIVE, into an uninhabited wilderness. It was NOT a resurrected goat, symbolizing the resurrec ted Chri st, for it never died. The uninhabited wilderness, towhich this goat was driven, CANNOT,as we shall show, represent HEAVEN,where Chri st went. Heaven is nei theruninhabited, nor a wilderness. After God designated which goat rep

resented Christ, and which Azazel, th eHigh Priest (verse 11 ) kil led the bullock for a sin offering for himsel f, thentook the burning coals of fire and th esweet incense i nt o the Ho ly of Holies,

also sprinkling the blood of the bullockbefore the MERCY SEAT, typica l of thethrone of God, covering the tables oftestimony (the law). This the HighPriest was required to do in order t oPURIFY HIMSELF to officiate, and torepresent CHRIST as High Priest. In theantetype, this was not done, for Christ, our HIGH PRIEST, had no need of thispurification as the typical substitutionary priests did.

Now the Levitical high priest is readyto go Ollt and officiate.

Next, the goat which God selected

The GOOD NEWS

by lot to represent CHRIST, aJ th e SINOFFERING OF THE PEOPLE, was killed. Thus the SINS OF THE PEOPLE wereBORNE by this goat, even as Christ, finally, once tor all bore our sins onthe cross. This goat represented Chri stthe LAMB OF GoD--Christ on the cross. But Christ ROSE again from the dead, and ascended to the throne of God INHEAVEN.

Now WHO, or WHAT, from this pointon in the Levitical ceremony, typifiedthe RESURRECTED CHRIST, who wen t toheaven? Some say the goat representingAzazel. Let us see.

The RISEN Christ, now at the righthand of the throne of God in Heaven( l Pet. 3: 22), is called-what? OURHIGH PRIEST! What was the earthlyTYPE of God's throne? The uninhabited wilderness? That is where the LIVEgoat went! No!

The earthly type of God's throne wasthe MERCY SEAT in the HOLY OF HOLIES.

Aft er Christ died, He went to the heavenly mercy seat interced ing for US, asour HIGH PRIEST. " . . . entering intowhat is within the veil; WHITHER theforerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after theorder of Melchisedec" (Heb. 6: 19-20).

Now, again, WHO, or WHAT, in theLevitical ceremony of the DAY OFATONEMENT, typified the RISEN Christ, our HIGH PRIEST, who went WITHINTHE VEIL to God's throne in heaven? The one goat has been SLAIN. I t represented the SLAIN Christ. It can nolonger represent the RISEN Christ. TheSLAIN Chr is t was NOT our H ig h Priestas the Levitical priesthood, with its highpriest, did not END unt il Christ rosefrom the dead and ascended to heavenas a High Priest AFTER THE ORDER OFMELCHISEDEC. But the RISEN Christ wasHIGH PRIEST. Now WHO rook thispart in the Levitical ceremonies, temporarily re-enacted year by year, on thiseternal Holy Day? Why, so obviously achild could see, it was the LeviticalHIGH PRIEST, no t the goat represent-ing Azazel!

Th e High Pries t -Type of Christ

As soon as the slain goat was dead,

who went within the veil, presenting theblood of this goat before the typicalt hrone of God?

Lev. 16:15-"Then shall he (thehigh priest) kill the goat of the sinoffering, that is for the people, and(NOW the high priest himself typifyingthe work of the RISEN Chr is t) b ringhis blood within the veil . . . and sprinkle it upon the MERCY SEAT: and (v.16 ) he shall make an a tonement for theholy place.

And so it was the high priest takingthe blood wit hi n the veil, to the mercy

August, 1954

seat, t ha t typified the risen Christ figuratively taking HIS blood, once for all, within the veil to the very throne ofGod in heaven, there to intercede for usas High Priest. Surely this is so p la in achild can see.

The slain goat represented the crucified Jesus. The High Priest, by tak ingthe blood of this slain goat in to the veilto the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies,a type of God 's throne , represented anddid the work of the RISEN CHRIST, whoascended to the right hand of the Majesty on High, there interceding as ourHigh Priest. Can we honest ly continueto teach that the goat representingAZAZEL represented and did the workof the RISEN CHRIST? Did this livegoat take the blood of Christ WITHINTHE VEIL, to the mercy seat?

Th e high priest going within the veil, into the Holy of Holies, was a type ofChrist' s going to heaven. His comingback FROM the Holy of Holies symbol

ized Christ' s return to earth. Th e workhe did while IN the Holy of Holies symbolized Chri st' s work these 1900 yearsinterceding for US, presenting His shedblood before the MERCY SEAT in heaven. Now, returning, symbolizing Christ 'sreturn to earth, what did he do?

"And when he hath made an end ofreconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregat ion, and the altar,he shall bring the live goat: and Aaronshall lay both his hands upon the headof the live goat, and confess over himALL THE INIQUITIES of the childrenof Israel, and ALL their transgressions inALL their sins, PUTTING THEM UPONTHE HEAD OF THE GOAT, and shallsend him away by the hand of a fit manin to the wilderness: and the goat shallbear upon him (Fenton: shall carrylipan itself) all th ei r iniquities unto aLAND NOT INHABITED: and he shalllet go the goat IN THE WILDERNESS.And Aaron shall . . . wash his fleshwith water . . . and he that let go thegoat for the scapegoat (Azazel) shallwash his clothes, and bathe his flesh inwater, and AFTERWARD come into thecamp" (Lev. 16:20-26).

Th e AZAZEL Goat NOT OURSIN-BEARER

Let us get this STRAIGHT.Is the re JUSTICE with God? Is not

God a God of JUSTICE, as well as ofcompassion and mercy? Who is the realAUTHOR of our sins? The Devi l is theAUTHOR of them, even as Christ is theauthor of our salvation. Tesus took ourguilt--our blame--our sins-upon Himself as an INNOCENT SUBSTITUTION-ARY SACRIFICE. He was an INNOCFNT VICTIM. He loved us, and waswilling to die for us. OUR guilr-c-oussins, were borne by HIM, and HIM

ALONE-and God forgives them whenwe repent and ACCEPT His sacrifice. And ye t - i s this, if we stop there, FULLJUSTICE?

The real CAUSE-the actual AUTHORof those sins was Satan the DEVIL. Is itjustice for CHRIST to bear guilt that isnot His, while the Devil goes off scotfree? Do you not suppose GOD'S GREATPLAN will finally work full justice byplacing that original blame and guiltright where it belongs?

Now mark carefully this distinction.Chr is t bore OUR guilt. For we havebeen guilty, even tho the Devil was theoriginal CAOSF of it all. But justice certainly demands tha t God place r ightback on the head of the Devil HISGUILT-not OUR guilt, bu t HIS OWNGUILT-for leading us into sin. Wewere guilty, too-and OUR guilt Christbore-yet ALL OUR SINS belong rightback on the Devil as HIS OWN GUILT!

Now notice another point. The Azazel

goatCARRIES

AWAY

the sins of all thepeople ALREADY FORGIVEN. These sinsalready were fully paid for by Chr ist' sSUBSTITUTE sacrifice, symbolized by thekilling of the innocent goar, BEFOREthose SAME SINS were finally laid on thelive goal! The sins finally laid on theLIVE goat had been previously paidfor by the dea th of the slain goat.

The Devil is the real AUTHOR of allsin. Can we, then, be finally made ATONE with God, as long as this instigatorof sin is with us? Can we not see hemust first be DRIVEN AWAY? And therewould not be justice with God unlessHISOWN GUILT in ou r sins were placed

right back on HIS head? Is it justice forChrist to bear the DEVIL'S GUILT, aswell as our own gui lt , for ou r sins?Chris t has CARRIED our sins, bu t mustHe CONTINUE to carry them? Shouldthey not be REMOVED ent irely from us,and fr om the presence even of God?

Thus the ki lling and spri nkling ofthe blood of the first goa t visibly setfor th the MEANS of reconciliation withGod, thru the substituted sacrifice of aninnocent victim. So the final sendingaway of the second goat, laden withthose sins, th e expiation of which hadbeen signified by the first goat, no lessvividly sets forth the effect of that sacrifice, IN COMPLETE REMOVAL OF THOSEEXPIATED SINS FROM THE PRESENCEOF GOD!

Satan th e ACCUSER

Satan is the ACCUSER of the brethren.Hi s power over men is founded on SIN.When all those sins, of which he is theauthor, are laid back on him, after beingremoved from us by CHRIST, then Satanshall have lost his claim on us. And NOLONGER can he accuse us!Thus, f inally, as the acceptance of the

The GOOD NEWS

blood of rhe first goat (Christ) symbolized complete propitiation, and PAR-DON of Israel's sins, so the sending ofAzazel bearing A WAY those expiated sinssymbolizes the complete REMOVAL OFALL SINS-deliverance by THE ATONE-MENT from the POWER of the Adversary.

The sacrifice of the first innocentvictim was the MEANS of reconciliationwith God, bu t not yet complete justice.

The driving away of the second livegoat shows the FINAL ATONEMENT, byplacing the sins on their author wherethey belong, and the complete REMOVALof the sins and their author from thepresence of God and His people-andthus, the COMPLETE DELIVERANCE of thepeople from the POWER OF SATAN.

Webster says to ATONE means to SETATONE. To JOIN in ONE. To FORM byUNITING. We shall not be completelyjoined IN ONE, and UNITED with God,until this is done. Before leaving this, notice, tOO, that

after laying bo th his hands on the livegoat, Azazel, Aaron had to wash andcleanse himsel f before coming in contact with the people. So, too, the "fitman" also had to wash his clothes andbathe himself after coming in contactwith the Azazel goat, before he cameinto the presence of the people. Thesymbolism is certainly that of havingcome in contacr with the Devil!

Notice, now, this act of putting thesealready expiated and forgiven sins onthe head of this live goat does no t takeplace until after the high priest RE-TURNS from the Holy of Holies wi th inthe vei l -so this typified an act to

take place AFTER THE SECOND COMINGOF CHRIST TO THIS EARTH!But if the live goat represented the

resurrected Christ, then the sins Chri stbore on the cross were PLACED BY ANOTHER, typified by the high priest,BACK ON CHRIST, AFTER HIS RESUR-RECTION. Would this make sense? Isthe theory of the Azazel goat beingChrist CONSISTENT? No, but the plainsimple meaning does fit at every turn, and IS consistent. The first goat represented the innocent Jesus who died forour s ins- the high priest representedthe RISEN CHRIST going within theveil to the mercy seat, or thr one of Godin heaven for over 1900 years-and thehi gh pri est r et urni ng to place the sinsfinally upon the head of th e live goatrepresented the return of Christ whowill place the sins He bore on theirauthor, the Devil, and who will sendhim away ALTVP into a desolate UNINHABITED WILDERNESS-the "BOTTOM-LESS PIT" or abyss of Reve lat ion 20:2.

In the 19th chapter of Revelation,we have the prophecy of the secondcoming of Christ. At the beg inning ofthe 20th chapter, what is to happen?

Page 7

Exactly what this 16th chapter of Leviticus shows. The Devil is sent away-thesymbol here used is the "bottomless pit"-symbol of an uninhabited desolatewilderness (Rev. 18 :2 ) -and he is sentthere by a FlY man-an ANGEL fromheaven. Now the devil is not killed. Hedoes not die. He is still alive a thousandyears later-after the millennium (Rev.20:8) .

Now a few points that will come tomind. Both goats were "presented before the Lord." Can Satan be presentedbefore the Lord? Job 1: 6, and 2:1 sayshe has presented himself before theLord. Note, too, Azazel was driven awayfrom the Holy of Holies, a symbol ofGod's presence.

And so the annual DAY OF ATONE-MENTwas instituted FOREVER, to keepcontinually before God's chi ldren andHis CHURCH the picture of this greatevent in the PLAN OF REDEMPTION, tooccur after the second coming of Christ.

And we find this annual holyday recognized in the New Testament. In Acts27:9, when Paul was on his perilous seavoyage to Rome, it is recorded that"when sai ling was now dangerous, be-caessc THE PASTUlas n ow alrt:ady past."See the margin in your Bible. The FAslrefers to the DAY OFATONEMENT-10thday of seventh month. Now this daycould not then have been PAST on thatparticular year unless that day was stillin full effect and force and existence.Otherwise the Holy Spiri t surely couldnever have inspired those words! Surelythis strongly indicates that this day wasstill in existence and be ing recognized

thus by the Holy Spirit.

How to Cook

Vegetables(Continued from page 4)

quickly slice or otherwise prepare thevegetable, heat it in the pot as quicklyas possible, then reduce the heat so tha tit does not boil. Be sure to have a closefitting lid so that the steam is kept in.Long cooking at too low a temperatureis just as bad as boiling. More vitaminssurvive a short cooking time, eventhough the temperature is near boil ing.

The "strong" flavor which cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts are saidto have, develops only when these pego-tables are overcooked. It is due to sulphur compounds in them breaking downafter long cooking, or from boiling.

Like soda, soap is an alkali. I f thecooking ware has not been rinsed thoroughly, traces of soap will get into thefoods cooked in them and damage vitamins. A little vinegar added to hardwater wiII help in rinsing. If you cookwith hard water, add a few drops of

vinegar to the water before cookingvegetables.

In all of these methods the vegetableis salted after it is cooked. When waterdoes not surround the vegetable duringcooking, salt draws moisture out of it-moisture which contains vitamins andminerals. This loss of moisture alsotoughens some vegetables.

Canned Vegetables

Since the nat ion has become so vitamin-conscious, some have wonderedhow much food value remains in cannedvegetables. For several reasons, they areoften, though not always, JUSt as goodas vegetables bought at the marke t andcooked at home. They are not as goodas fresh home-grown vegetables thathave been correctly prepared, however.Canneries generally process vegetablesthe same day they are picked. Vegetables to be canned are picked when theyhave reached their best maturity, where

as many fresh vegetables seen at thegrocery were picked immature if thesource was any distance from the city. The vacuum-pack process which manycanneries now use preserves more vitamins than older processes did. By thismethod the vege table is packed cold inthe can and afterward heated and sealed.

The greatest m is take mos t houseuiitres make in serving canned uegetables is draining the juice off. I f it isserved with the l iquid, usually only thesolid portions are eaten and the juiceremains to be thrown away. The liquidin the can contains the largest share ofthe vitamins and minerals and must beeaten to get the full value from cannedvegetables.

Canned foods are already cooked andshould be heated only to the boilingpoint before serving. One vegetable- tomatoes- loses very lit tle in canningbecause its acid content prevents much

loss. Toma to juice is sometimes a better source of vitamin C than storageoranges.

Frozen Vegetables

Frozen vegetables, though not as goodas freshly picked and cooked ones, arebetter than canned vegetables if correctly stored and cooked. The rwo-to

four-minute blanching (dipping in boiling water) that most vegetables undergo before f reezing undoubtedly takesout some vitamins and minerals.

Since vitamin C deteriorates as soonas thawing begins, frozen vegetablesshould no t be thawed before they arecooked. Pounding the unopened package wi th a heavy object will break upthe frozen mass so that the vegetableheats more evenly after it is pu t intothe boiling water. Th e unopened package can be part ial ly thawed in cold water if one is in a hurry. Frozen vegetables should be cooked only a short time

after they reach th e boiling po in t - 5 to8 minutes is usually enough.

Pressure Cooking

Pressure cooking has often been presented as a good method for preservingfood value because the cooking time isshort. The disadvantage is that after thecooking t ime is up, it is difficult to coolthe pan quickly enough to prevent thefood inside from becoming overcooked.

Usually, the manufacturer furnishesdirections describing how the pressuresaucepan is to be used. The processingtimes given for each vegetable shouldbe carefully observed. One has to be aclock-watcher to successfully cook witha pressure saucepan or cooker. Thisme thod of cooking should be useful athigh alt itudes where food does not cookeasily.

Waterless cooking has come intovogue in recent years. This method re-

quires a heavier-than-ordinary pot madeof a material t ha t will conduct the heatevenly in the sides and top as well ason the bottom. Such ware is quite expensivc, beyond the reach of most people. The manufacturer usually includesor gives direct ions for using it.

Even this type of utensil is more ef-ficient if a small amount of water is pu t

in to begin steaming, thus short eningthe cooking time. I f no water at all ispu t with most vegetables, the fire mustbe very low from the beginning toavoid burning the food. This slow heating lengthens the cooking time.

Serving

After the vegetable is cooked itshould be served as soon as possible. In the event the meal is delayed, thefood should be covered. Food kept warmfor any length of time loses vitaminsfaster than if it were chilled.

Leftover vegetables should be placed

in covered dishes and kept in th e refrigerator because some destruction ofvitamins occurs as long as the food isexposed to warmth, air and light. Suchvegetables are best ased cold in salads.

However, if they are reheated, it shouldbe done quickly in a covered pan or inthe top of a double boiler.

The conclusion, then, is tha t there isno way of cooking vegetables tha t preserves all the vitamins, bu t there aremethods that destroy less of them. I t isestimated that everyone needs five timesas much vit amin C as of any other vitamin; yet that is the very vitamin thatcooking destroys the most of. That iswhy no one should eat ONLY cookedvegetables. A raw salad, some citrusfruit or tomato, and another fruit shouldbe included each day in the diet.

In the next article of this series we

will discuss how meat is affected bydifferent cooking methods.
