HOW TO BE Saved!Millions have been led to think they are saved,

who are only deceived, and don't know i t ! -Here is a frank, daring article, making the truth PLAIN!

By Herbert W', ArmstrongI T'S HARD to believe, but it's true.Millions have believed on JesusChrist-and are no t saoedlMillions worship Christ-and all tn

l'ain!Almost every sermon you hear; O [tract you read, telling "How to BeSaved" will admonish you:"Just BELlEvE!-believe on the LordJesus Christ, and you are saved.""That's all there is to it," they assureyou, "just BELIEVE. There are NOWORKS."

You must not keep the Ten Commandments, for you'll be under a curseif you do. "By grace are ye saved, thruFAITH-not of works," they quote,"les t any man should boast." Wh y dothey neuer read to yo u th e rest of thatinstruction, in th e following t-erse?Can One Worsh ip Christ-IN VAIN?

Would you suppose one could actually u.orsbip Christ-and all in vain?Do you know what Jesus Himself saidof these people who want to worshipHim without keeping God 's Commandment s? Listen to His words: "Howbeitin vain do they WOYJhip me , teaching fordoctr ines the commandments of men.For laying aside the commandment ofGod, ye hold the tradition of men. . ,Full well ye reject the Commandmentsof God, that ye may keep your owntradition," (Mark 7: 6-9,)In those words Jesus perfectly described what is labeled fundamentalist

"Christianity" today, as given ou t by thepopular church denominations.

Back to the Faith Once DeliveredBut what does GOD tell you, in His

Word?Thru Jude, God says: "Beloved, whenI gave all di li gence to write unto you of

the co mmo n salvation, it was needful forme to write unto you, and exhort youthat ye should earnestly contend for th efaith which u/as once delivered unto thesaints. For the re are certain men creptin unawares ungodly men, turningthe GRACE of our God inro LasClVlOUS-ness, and denying the only Lord God,and our Lord Jesus Christ." (Jude ) -4.)Yes, even before the New 'Testamentwas completely written, ungodly menhad crept inside the Church to corruptit-turning GRACE into LASCIVIOUSNESS.And what is "lasciviousness?" Itmeans "license"-unrestrained liberty of

lust, wantonness-abuse of privilege. Inother words, permission to disregard anddisobey God's Law! And that is exactlywhat those ungodly men, even in thefirst century, did do-turned GRACE intounrestrained privilege to disobey God'slaw! And once introduced, the practicehas persisted and spread over the wholeworld unti l today! This is one of the FABLES the Apostle

Paul warned us men would rurn roo Paulsaid: "But evil men and seducers shallwax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. Bur continue thou in the

things which thou hast learned" (theTRUTH) .. "knowing of whom rhrn:hast learned them, and that f rom a chi ldthou has known th e Holy Scripteaes, which are able to ma ke thee ioise untoJalt;ation.. . For the time will comewhen they will nor endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts (lasciviousness) shall they turn away theireats f rom the t ruth, and shall be turnedunto FABLES." (I I Tim. ):13-4:4.)But, one will argue, Jude said thesemen would dCIly the Lord Jesus Christ.Do not the men and churches who teach"no works" be li eve in Christl Do theydeny Him?Yes, they deny H i m / God says: "Theyprofess that they know God; but inu.ores they deny Him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every goodwork reprobate." (Titus I J (1. !"What the Saviour Himself Taught"These deceived teachers have just onefavorite text. They quo te Acts 16:)1:"BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, andthou shalt be saved."Now that text from the pen of Paul

means what it says. But there are tw okindJ of FAITH-the liuing faith thatbrings salvation, and a dead. "no works"faith that produces only DEATH.But WHY do they, in their tracts andtheir sermons, never quote ui ba: th eSeoiour Himscl] said in answer to thequestion? WHY?Jesus was asked: "What shall I do to

Page 2inherit eternal life?" (Luke 18:18.)Some might try to tell you that the SAV-lOUR Himself did nor know, or teach, the way of SALVATION-He was teaching Old Tes tament religion. \X!ell, Hewas asked HOW to gain ETERNAL LIFE.Is that salvation? It certainly is! The OldTestament religion lasted until ] ohn nor until the Cross-not until "Pentecost." just UNTIL JOHN (Luke 16:16),Jesus preached the SAME Gospel He commanded His disciples to t each ALL nations-Gentiles included-the sameGospel Paul preached to Genti les-Hepreached only the NEW Testament Gospe l -He revealed THE WAY OF SALVA-TION. Here is His answer-that of theSAVIOUR HIMSELF on HOW TO BESAVED:"IF thou w ilt enter into LIFE, keepthe Conimaruimcnts' And He enumerated enough of the Ten Commandmentsto show it was this particular law thatmust be obeyed AS A CONDITION toreceiving eternal life as God's GIFT.Jesus said "IF"- ( there was a CONDITION) - - " I I " we are to be saved, byGod's grace, WE MUST KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS' God lays down His ownterms and conditions His FRFF GIFTis wnditional-you ge t it ONLY if you"keep the Commandments."You can't EARN it. God GIVES it-

but ouly lU those who "KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS." God will not GIVE youeternal life in sin. And what is sin?"SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THELAW." ( l john 3:4.)

Some who pervert God 's truth insistJesus did not name ALL of the TenCommandments in the above Scripture.Sin is the t ransgression of THE LAW, Itis a COMPLETE LAW. He named enoughof its points to designate WHICH LAWHe was t al king about . And james saysthat law has "POINTs"-and, if webreak any ONE of the ten points of theTen Commandments, we BRFAK THELAW. and are sinners' (James 2:8-11.)

Peter's TeachingThe very same day the Holy optrrt

c a m e - ~ t h e very day the New TestamentChurch was started-thousands hearingthe inspired Peter's sermon which struckstraight to their hearts asked, "W hat shallwe do!"-yes, WHAT SHALL WE DO TOBE SAVED'The inspired answer was:"REPENT, and BE BAPTIZED every

one of you in th e n ame of Je su s Christfor the remiss ion of sins, and ye shallrecerve the gift of the Holy Spir it ."(Act s 2: 38.) And Pet er made plain thefact that these same condi tions, and thispromise, apply to rhei r children, downthru t ime-as many as the Lord ou r Godshall call. They apply today!Jesus said, "REPENT YEo and BELIEVE

The GOOD NEWSTHE GOSPEL." We must BELIEVE noronly in Jesus as Saviour, but we must bel ieve also the GOSPEL He brought andpreached-a Message not preached to-day by the organized churches.

Jesus also said, "Except ye REPENT yeshall all l ikewise perish." After Hi s resurrec tion , in His pa rt in g instructions toHi s disciples for preaching the way ofsalvation, Jesus said "Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, andto rise from t he dead th e thir d day: andthat REPENTANCE and remission of sinsshould be preached in Hi s name amongall nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Andye are witnesses of these things. " (Luke24:46-47,) This is the Gospel for ALLNATIONS!God 's i nspi red definition of sin isthis: "Sin is the t ransgression of thelaw." (I John 3:4,) Paul would not have

known what was sin, except by the law,But what law? The very law which says:"Thou shalt- not covet." (Rom. 7:7.)That law is the Ten Commandments. This law is summed up in th e oneword-LOVE! It is further defined in thetwo Great Commandments, LOVE toGod, and LOVE to neighbor. But thesam.e la w is further defined, and dividedinto ten points, by the Ten Commandments-the first four of which tell ushow to love God, th e last six of whichtell us how to love neighbor. And thus it is explained in James: "I fye fulfill the royal law according to the

scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighboras thyself, ye do well." (James 2:8.)Here is the Royal Law-the whole Law- a s a general principle. The law isLOVE and LOVE is the fulfilling of thelaw. Jesus fulf il led it, setting us an example that we, too, should fulfill thelaw. We fulfill it with LOVE-nor anynatural, carnal love in human nature, but"the love of GOD is shed abroadin our hearts by the Holy Spirit" (Rom.'5 : '5 ) _ The Holy Spi ri t in us is merelyGOD'S LAW IN ACTION IN OUR LIVES'And so, if we fulfill this Royal Law, wedo well -but if not, we commit sin(] ames 2: 8-9 ). Now read verse 10. Ifwe keep th e WHOLE LAW-the generalprinciple of LOVE to neighbor-yet offend in one point, we are guilty-wehave broken the law-and the penalty isDEATH, not eternal life.Notice, please, the law is divided into

points! And it is div ided in to TENPOINTS - th e Ten Commandments. These are merely the ten points, or subdivisions, of the general Roya l Law,LOVE to God and to neighbor. "For Hethat said (or, that law which said-seemargin in your Bible) Do not commitadultery, said also, Do not kill. Now ifthou commit no adultery"-if you dono t bre ak t ha t specific point-"yet ifthou kill"-you just break that one point

    February, 1952

-" thol l a rr become a transgressor of thelaw," (Jas. 2: 11.) So you see the TENCOMMANDMENTS is the very law it issin to transgress.Ir is a SpIH/TUAL law (Rom, 7:14).It is fulfilled by the SPIRITUAL LOVEwhich is God's precious gift to us-Hislove placed within us. "Wherefore thelaw is HOLY, and the commandmentHOLY, AND JUST, AND GOOD." (Rom.7: 12.)To REPENTof sin means to turn fromsin. It means to QUIT SINNING! And

that means to stop transgressing God'sholy Law. And the way to stop breakingit is to begin KEEPING God's CommandmentS-ALL OF THEM, for if youbreak only one, you bring on yoursel fthe penalty-ETERNAL DEATH, and youlose salvation. Now Jesus "magnified the law, and

made it honorab le ." When we pu t aspiritual "magnifying glass," so to speak,on the Ten Commandments, it is enlarged in spi ri t and p rinc ip le i nto manymore points. And in a larger aspect, rheENTIRE BIBLE is a magnification ofGod's Law. The Law is the basis of allScr ip tu re . It defines THE WAY of l i f e TIlE WAY to peace-THE WAY to sueCeSS-THE WAY to happiness, joy, eternallife.Notice how l ike God it is! The Law isGOOD (Rom. 7: 12 ). GOD is good. The Law is HOLY (Rom. 7:12). GODis holy! The Law is JUST (Rom. 7:12). GOD

is JUSt!The Law is SPIRITUAL (Rom. 7:14).

GOD is spiritual! The Law is PERFECT (Psalm 19:7).GOD is perfect! The Law-including all His Com

mandments-is immutable, ETERNAL,stands fast FOREVER AND EVER (PsalmI l l : 7-8). And GOD is eternal!Of course-for the Law is the verycharacter , the very nature, of God! It is

the WILL of God.Can We Know God's Will?

So many say, "I want to do Hi s will."Well, His Law is Hi s will! So many say,"I f only I could know God 's will." Youcan know it if you are willing-it is expressed in His Law!But in this modern-day Babylon

confusion of conflicting church teachings-you have been taught, falsely, thatYOUR CONSCIENCE tells you what issin. But your conscience only troublesyou when you do what you think iswrong. And what you think is wrong, another may think is r ight . Your CONSCIENCE is no guide!Sin is not the Joing of what you thinkis wrong. No t the transgression of canscience-"sin is the t ransgression of

    Where Is Enoch?By Herman L. H oeh

ENOCH was "translared."Where did he go?Was he taken to heaven- NO 'Because Jesus himself said: UNo manhath ascended up to heaven, bu t he thatcame down from heaven, even the Sonof man ." (John 3 .13. ) l Ie re are Jesus'own words that 110 man, except Himself, had been in heaven' And how did Heknow? Why, He came from there! Then, where is Enoch' Let's see whatthe Bible says,

Walking With GodAt the age of sixty-five Enoch had ason named Methuselah. "And Enoch

w al ked w it h (,'od after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and hebegat sons and daughters." (Genesis5: 22.) Here was a man that pleasedGod, a man who WALKED WITII GOD,Enoch had fa ith, for in Hebrews 11: 6,the Apostle said: "But without faithit is impossible to please Him: for hetha t cometh to God must believe thatHe is, and t hat He is a rewarder of themthat diligently seek Him," So Enochwalked with God. He o!}())i()c! God andjolloll'1!d Him in His pat hs BY FAITH'Noah also walked with God. (Gen.G:9.) Enoch and Noah did not followthe paths of the world which corrupted

God's way. (Gen. (1.12.) These twomen proved their belief in God bywalking in tbe I ra } , of God-doingwhat was pleasing to Him.No one can walk with God unless heis in agreement with the will of Godand doing it. Amos the prophet said:

"Can two walk together, except t hey beagreed?" (Amos 3: 3.) So in his generation Enoch was the only recorded persari who followed the ways of God even though it possibly rook him sixtyfive years to learn to walk with God'How irnporranr t hi s fact in the l if e ofEnoch rea lly is, can be seen from thegeneral practice of the wor ld which hasalways disagreed with God. AncientIsrael walked in the statutes of theheathen, not in the laws of God. (2Kings 17:8,19.) Even today most everyone is walking in the course of thisworld. But bou long did Enoch walk with

God' The scripture says that he "walkedwith God after he begat Methuselahthree hundred vears." So Enoch followedGod's ways for three hundred years. Not ice tha t Moses did no t record thatEnoch is still walking with God. TheScripture says that Enoch WALKED withGod for three hundred years and no t

one year more! Then Enoch is not stillwalking with God! Why?Because "all the davs of Enoch weret hree hund red sixty-five years." Gen.5:23. All the days of Enoch were threehundred sixty-five years. Not just partof his days, but all his days! I f Enochdid not die- i f he was changed to immortality-and thus continued to walkwith God, then his days would havebeen more than three hundred sixtyfive. But the Bible plainly says that ALLhis days were just that many, and nol/lore!This express ion "all his days" is usedin the same fifth chapter of Genesis

about a dozen times and always it meanst hat the person l ived for that length oftime ONLY "and he died." So Enochlived NO MORE than three hundred andsixty-five years because "all his days werethree hundred sixty-five years." As heIived only for this length of time THENHE MUST HAVE DIED'But what about his translation? Does

that mean he didn't die'Tha t's wha t most people carelessly

    "'Jutlle without proof.His Translation

Remember, Morer doesn't say thatEnoch didn't die, but r athe r tha t "Enochwalked with God: and he war not ; forGod took him." (Gen. 5: 24.) Paul records the same event by saying that he"was not found, because God had translated him." (Heb. 11: 5.)Thus the Scripture records that Enochteas no t found because God took himor "translated" him. The Bible does no tsay Enoch went to heaven because hewas rranslarer]. Tnsrteacl ir says he war

not found.Certainly Enoch was "translated," butwhat doer "trarislate' mean'Strange as it may seem, nowhere inall th e Bible doer translate mean to make

immortal'The original Greek word for "translate" is metatitbemi. According to

Strong it signif ies: transier. transport, exchange, change sides. This same Greekword is rendered "carr ied over" in Acts7: IG. Here we read that after Jacob died, his body was "carried over"-transported, TRANSLATED---tO Sychem "andlaid in the sepulchre." Jacob was notmade immor ta l, bu t was translated ortransported to Sychem WH ERE HE WASBURIED! Th"t', u'lia: your Bible Jap. 'Jacob was transportee!' or TRANSLA1:EOto the place of burialThat is why Moses said that God

TOOK Enoch. God removed-translated- h im so that he war no t found, InDeuteronomy 34:G we read also howGod took Moses from the people afterwhich he died and was buried by God,"But no man knowerh of his sepulchreunto this day." God removed Moses andhe teas no t found either'So Enoch was not made immortal afterall! He was taken away and was notfound. ALL his days were three hundredsixty-five' That's as long as Enoch lived.Another pr oof t hat "translate" doesnot mean to make immortal is found inCol. 1: 13: The Father "hath deliveredus from the power of darkness, and hath

TRANSLATED us into the kingdom ofhis dear Son." Here the Bible says thatChristians are already tranJlated-butChristians still die! We are not immortalbodies, bu t mortal flesh and blood. Although we were once part of the darkness of thi s world, no w we are TRANSLATED, removed from darkness Into thelight of the kingdom of God.

Didn't Receive the PromiseEnoch is included by Paul (i n He-brews 11) among rhe fathers who ob

tained a good report' through faith;bu t "ALL these, having obtained a goodreport through faith, received no t thepromise (Heb. 11: 39)." What promise'The "hope of eternal life, which God,

that cannot lie, promiJed befor e theworld began." Titus I :2. So Enoch is oneof "ALL THESE" who have no t yet obtained the p romise of eternal life andinheritance. Enoch and all the wor th iesof old will rcceiie the promise of e ternal life at the return of Chr ist , the samerirne Christians obtain it. (Heb. 11:40.)Since Enoch has nor yet inheritedet erna l li fe he must be dead! But whatabout Paul's saying that Enoch shouldno t see dea th?

"Should Not See Death"Enoch lived ONLY three hundred sixty-five years. Then what could Paulpossibly have meant by say ing : "By fai thEnoch was translated that he sbould no tree death; and was not found because

God had translated him?" This verse nowhere says Enoch did no t die. Rather,it says that Enoch "sbouid. not see death."But what does it mean?Remember, there is more th an one

death mentioned in the Bible. There isa lint death, and there is a second death,(Rev. 20:(1.) WHICH death did Paulmean? The tirst death is appointed unto men.

Jonah 2: 1 and Matthew 12:40. TheGreek word used here for fish is "keros"which means "huge fish," so the phrase"huge fish's belly" would be more appropriate , a lthough we used the KingJames' expression. In the article concerning "LAZARUSand the RICH MAN," t he o ri gina l wordfor "grave" mentioned in John 5:28 wassaid to be the Greek word "hades." Theorigina l word he re was "rnnerneion"which also means grave or sepulchre.

lV t he light of the family or kingdomof God and Christ. In verse 10 Paulshows that to abide in this kingdomwe must "walk worthy of the Lord untoall pleasing." This is exactly what Enochdid. He walked with God and pleasedGod.Then Enoch, the same as Chris ti an s,was delivered from the power of sin

and darkness in which he had been Jiving for sixty-five years. He was removed( translated) from the ways of the worldand lived three hundred years according to God's ways so that he might inher it e te rna l life at Chris t' s r et urn, andshould not suffer the second death.By faith Enoch was separated-removed or translated-from the world, the same as Christians who are nor tobe part of the world, although Jivingin the world. No t only was Enoch FIGURATIVELY

taken from the society of his day, bu the was also LITERALLY removed-translated-so that he was not found. Godtook him physically away from the people, JUSt as He l ater took Moses. AndGOD buried each so well that neitherhas ever been found since! Enoch hadcompleted this present morta l life. "Al lhis days were three hundred sixty-fiveyears."God gave Enoch thi s s ign of physical

removal as a type for all those whoshould later fol low Enoch 's exampleof fai th . He was taken physically fromthe people just as Christians are to be.rpiritually removed from the ways ofthe world. The physical translation orcarrying away of Enoch was also a signto him by God th at his faith had beenaccepted-God often gives signs (Isaiah38:7).Like eve ry t rue sa in t, Enoch is awairing t he hope of the resurrection and thereturn of Christ. The Man Who Couldn'tAfford to TITHEBy Herbert W. Armstrong

I T WAS late in 1933-the very depthof the great depression. Ed Smithwas a well driller by profession, butnobody seemed able to afford to havewells drilled.Ed and his wife, Emma, attendedservices I was then holding in a oneroom country school house twelve mileswest of Eugene, Oregon. Ed made noprofession of Christianity unt il later. But he attended services, and went upand down the countryside discussingBible doctrines with his professingChristian neighbors."You've got to pay tithes and keep theSabbath," he insisted. "The Bible says so.It's PLAIN!"One of his neighbors became irritated."Look here, Ed," the neighbor exploded, "why do you come around here trying to talk me into these things, whenyou don't keep the Sabbath or pay t ithesyourself?""Because," came Ed's quick and readyanswer, "I don' t profess to be a Christian, and you do." "Besides," he added,"I can't afford to tithe, anyway."Thousands Like Him

There are thousands who, like EdSmith, reason in thei r own minds tha tthey can 't afford to tithe, even though, like Ed Smith, they realize the Biblecommands it.1 heard about the above conversation, and preached a sermon on the questionof whether the unconverted should obeythe Ten Commandments and pay tithes,or whether, as Ed has reasoned, thesethings were only for Christians. 1 pointed our tha t God's law was pu t in motionfor man's good,-it is THE WAY of lifethat brings peace, happiness, prosperity, the full abundant in terest ing life, success, joy, bere and now, as well as eternal life thru Christ for the saved.1 showed tha t it PAYS, and is the onlysensible way of life, entirely apart fromthe matter of salvation-and that, evenif one is finally lost, he who sins littleshall be punished with few stripes, buthe who sins much with many stripes. 1pointed our God' s promises to prosperthe tithe-payer, and that this is a definite

LAW God has set in motion, which operates inexorably and automatically on thejust and the unjust alike.Ed began to rest on God's Sabbath. At the very next service-we were holding services at this little school house

three times a week, and three othernights a week in a hall in downtown Eugene at the time-Mrs. Smith smilinglyhanded me a one dollar bill."That 's Ed's first tithe," she said triumphantly. "We are now down to $10,and Ed decided to start tithing withwhat we have on hand."The very next service she came to mewith another happy smile."Here's a five dollar bill," she said."The very next day after Ed gave God'swork a tenth of all he had, a customerwho had owed him $50 for a year cameand paid up. So here's the tithe of that$50. After paying the total $6 t ithe, wenow have $54 on hand instead of the$10 we had the other day."It was beginning to pay! Bur only be-ginning! By the next service, as 1 remember it, Ed had received his first order in one or tWO years to drill a newwell, for which he received cash payment. Before he finished that job, another was contracted. Soon he had threeor four jobs coming in at once, and wasforced to begin employing men to workfor him.Ed Smith was only one of many 1 haveknown who learned by experience thatone cannot afford not to pay God the

tithe that BELONGS to God! I rememberEd Smith did encounter some troublesof a different nature later, and his wifeand son were sent to the state tuberculosis hospital, and he finally broke downin real repentance, accepting JesusChrist as Saviour. He came to me, according to the command of James 5:14,and both his wife and son were completely healed and returned home. Thisis a true story, and the name is not fictitious. Ed Smith died several years ago,but I'm happy to remember these incidents in his life in the hope they maystart many others on the right and profit-able, as well as the Christian, way of life. Why did God ordain tithing? Was itto place increased burden and taxationupon us? Let us not misunderstandGod's love and wisdom!

It isn't that God really needs yourfirst tenth. He could have establishedsome different system for carrying onHis work. But to have done so wouldhave robbed us of the blessing thatflows back to us if we are faithful intithes and offerings! The t ither is invariably a prosperousman. I do not mean wealthy-but one

whose actual needs are always supplied.Tithers, if faithful and obedient to theEternal, are not often found in want."Not because I desire a gift; but I desirefruit that may abound to YOUR account."(Phil. 4:17).God promises His children shall always have something to give (Deur.16: 16, 17). It is only when they withhold and misappropriate the t ithe andofferings tha t He fails to prosper them. For thru John He tells us "I wish aboveall things tha t thou mayest prosper andbe in health." (III John 2)."Honor the Eternal with thy substance, and with the first fruits of allthine increase: so shall thy barns befilled with plenty, and thy presses shallburst our with new wine." (Prov. 3: 9,10).Try it! "Prove me now herewith,"challenges the Eternal to us, in a prophecy for our day (Mal. 3: 10), "if 1 willnot open you the windows of heaven, and pour you our a hlessing rhat thereshall not be room enough to receive it."Are you behind financially? In debt?Your unfaithfulness in tithing and offerings may be the reason!

Concrete ExperiencesJohn D. Rockefeller, it is said. accepted God's challenge to prosper the titherat eight years of age, when he begantithing. Did he prosper?Mr. Colgate, the great soap manufacturer, left home when a very small boy.

He met an old sea captain who was aChristian. He asked the boy what hecould do, and the boy replied he knewonly how to make soap and candles."Give your heart to God," advised theold sea captain," and tithe your income. Some day there is going to be a man atthe head of the great soap industries inNew York, and there is no reason whyyou should not be the man." "Please Speak English"By Mary /0 Burrow

"Please speak English!" This phrasecan be heard quite of ten from the fewstudents here at Ambassador who donot take a foreign language. Why?Some of the most particularly enticingclasses to new students and most interesting to us here on the campus arethe foreign language courses which seemto have an unusual way of affectingstudents outside of class-and that'sthe reason for "Please speak English!"Three foreign languages are now beingtaught here: Spanish, French and German. Students take every opportunity tolearn to speak these languages.Although spoken at work, while studying, or even in play, ther e is no "Babylon" of confusion. But it is interes tingfor those students who don't take foreign languages, to hear the others sometimes forced to revert to English as thenecessiry arises.

If you should happen to walk in Mayfair dining room unexpectedly, youmight hear anyone of these languagesspoken, sometimes fluently, often not sofluently. Especially would you hear Spanish and French spoken alternately Monday evenings at the dining hour, eitherin the Mayfair dining room-for theSpanish-or in the beautiful faculty dining room-for the French. These are ourclub meetings. As soon as a student walksinto the room he speaks nothing but thelanguage of whatever club might be insession. The German club meets everyWednesday evening with Mr. Hamberger, our Custodian, as guest.Nor only do these clubs provide funas the newer students grapple with"unknown rongues"-as it seems to uswho take no foreign languages-butthey provide an entertaining way tolearn to speak the languages and tocombine with that knowledge that practice of the graces that should be extended whenever one would dine withforeign peoples.Only a few intrigued students takemore than one language. Although itseldom happens that the s tudents cor-

relate the two, whenever it does occur, abig laugh is heard to rise. But above all, we appreciate here theopportunity to learn these foreigntongues, as it is our duty to train ourselves in every way for the internationalspread of the gospel.

The Rose ParadeBy Bob SeeligEarly on the morning of Jan. I, 1952the men on third floor Mayfair werearousing each othe r out of bed to getprepared to park the cars of some ofthe many people that were to come tosee the beautiful and awe-inspiring RoseParade. All of our newly acqu ired athleticfield and all parking space at Mayfairwas available to students, in an oppor tunity to raise funds for the benefit ofthe whole student body.

The morning was cold and brisk andthe sky was cloudy and did not look toopromising for a good day; but it turnedout to be satisfactory for the paradeand the famous Rose Bowl Game, thisyear between the Univers ity of Il linoisand Stanford University of California.

The boys began parking cars in thechilly morning air about six o'clock andcontinued until about 9: 30. People camefrom a great number of states to seethe parade and the game. Police estimated a mil lion and a half specta tors atthe parade. The first view grandstands at the star t of the 3-mile paraderoute were erec ted on the recently purchased ground adjoining our campus onthe west, soon to provide the newOrange Grove Avenue ent rance to Ambassador College. Some built small firesalong the curb of Orange Grove Avenueand some were wrapped in heavy coatsand blankets. Others brought cots veryearly in the morning and slept until daylight. It is very amusing what peoplewill do in an instance such as this. "Hotdogs" and coffee were being sold earlyin the morning, but I am sure thatthe "hot dogs" were not very hot by thet ime they were bought and eaten. Thecrowd grew and grew and by the time

of the commencement of the parade themajority was assembled. This year there were about sixty floatsin the parade and about twenty bands."Dreams of the Future" was the theme ofthe Rose Parade this year. Many pictureswere taken of these floats-perhaps fivemillion photos in all. Just to give youan idea of how the floats were built todepict the theme of the Rose Parade,I will name a few of them, "Miss Universe," the Theme Prize Winner, entered by the city of Long Beach, "WorldPeace, the Grand Prize Winner, "TheLion and the Lamb," "Prosperity forAll," "Symbol of Plenty," "Man's EternalDream," "Eternal Happiness," "Security."You can well see by the names of thesefloats what people are seeking for, though they go in the opposite directionto find the answer to their dream. The parade is very inspiring to watchespecially for a first-time spectator. Ifyou ever get a chance to see it, I am sureit would be profitable to take the opportunity to see this exquisi te floral andmusical handiwork of man on para(le

And still he prospered!I know a man who started a smallgrocery business in a small Oregon city. This, too, was during the great depression. He had practically no capital, hadthe poorest location in town, and refusedto sell tobacco, and others said he couldnot succeed. Thus handicapped, startingin the beginning of the worst depressionthe world ever knew, not many wouldhave dared pay a whole tenth. This man decided he would be afaithful steward, take God into partnership, and trus t the Lord with His business. He prospered from the start andwas the only grocer in his town whoweathered the storm of depress ion successfully.

Tithing While in DebtYet so many say: "I don't think itwould be r ight for me to tithe while I'm

in debt." Yes, it is r ight , and the otherway is WRONG. "There is a way thatsccmcrh right to a man, but the endthereof are the ways of death." God'sWord tells us what is RIGHT, and Godtells us to pay to His work the firstfruitsof all our income. Regarding our materi-al and financial needs, even debts, Godsays "Seek ye fint the Kingdom of God,and his ri8htpo\1sness; and all thesethings shall be added unto you." (Mat.6: 33.)T he tithe is the debt that you oweGod. This debt is FIRST in time andprinciple. Pay your debts to God, make

The GOOD NEWSHim yOUl PARTNER in your finances, andreceive His blessing in temporal affairs. This will enable you to pay your debts,or to get a job, or to have your needssupplied more quickly than if you evadeHis debt.Remember your ALL belongs to HIM,not to you. (Deut. 10: 14). You are inthe pos iti on of steward handling that

which belongs to another. He is yours ilent partner , and the first ten th , in ad-dition to offerings, is His share. The restHe gives freely to you .. But if you ap-prop riat e for yourself HIS share, youare stealing, and ROBBING GOD (Mal.3:8). Would you pay your debts withmoney another man had left in yourtrust? If a man working in a bank doesthat, we call it embezzlement.'

Your Glorious OpportunitySome will say, "I never t ithed, and Iknow God never frowned on me, for Ihave the feeling in my heart that I am

Page 7His child without having to tithe."God has blessed you according as youhave yielded to Him according to thelight He has revealed to you, from HisWord! While you have the light , WALKin it, lest derleness come upon you!(John 12:35,36). GROW in grace andthe KNOWLEDGE of our Lord." (I I Pet.3: 18). See also Rom. 11: 22.If every professing Christian wouldaccept this p la in instruction from God,honoring HIM instead of themselveswith the ir substance, the work of theEternal would go forth with such mightypower that the world would be shakento its foundations!Seek ye FIRST the Kingdom, andyour material needs shall be ADDED. Tryit! Take God at His Word! PROVE HIM!(Mal. 3:10). See how you begin toprosper! Be a faithful steward; makeGod your PARTNER! Receive HisBLESSING! God' s work is wa it ing uponyou!

How YOU Can Have FAITHto Meet Life's Problems

    By Herman L. Hoeh

W au LDN'T you like to abolishevery worry and doubt fromyour m ind? And have insteadperfect confidence in God that you wil lreceive what He has promised you'Then here is God's answer to showyou how you can have that perfect faith

which will overcome all the problemsand sufferings of life.It is so easy for us to think we "believe," but when the test comes hasn't itbeen a great deal harder to say, "I stillhave faith"? It is usual1y easy to startt ru st in g God for the things He haspromised. But then along come doubtsand worries into your mind because youhaven't yet received what has beenplUlTlised.

What do you usually do then?Try to fight these fears and worries

uit h your human faith? That is the method most people thinkthe Bible wants them to use in acquiringfaith. Faith is v isualized as the struggleof human faith against doubt and worry,But is that the kind of fait h God uiantsyou to have?

Why You Lack FaithThe l iuing faith that God want s you

to have-the kind that overcomes thedifficult ies of l ife and endures sufferingwithout worry or doubting-that kindof faith YOU WEREN'T BORN WITH! Itis a gift of God.Faith is one of the g if ts of the Spirit.( l Cor. 12: 9. ) The first reason you mayhave been lacking in faith, is that youhave been relying on your own humanfaith which can' t dispel doubts,

It did take our own faith to believe inJesus Christ. But when t he Holy Spi ri tcomes into us, if we believe, repent ofsins and are baptized, then we have thefaith of Christ planted in us. Paul didn'tlive by his own faith, "But Christ livethin me: and t he life which I now li ve inthe flesh I live by the fai th of the Son ofGod." Gal. 2: 20. The Holy Spirit of Godhad planted in Paul' s mind, the samek ind o f faith that can be in your mind! Then you won't have to s truggle andfight against doubts and worries continually. It is at this point that almost everyonewho has the Spirit of God expects tohave complete faith. No more fears, nomore doubts or worries ! Just receivingthe Holy Spirit , so many think, has givenus all the faith we need! But is this

what you have found by exper ience?Certainly not. There doesn't seem to be any morefaith than before. What can t he mat te rbe?

Faith Must GrowDid you know tha t f aith is not im

planted whole and compl ete when wereceive the Spirit of God? Faith is somet hing tha t gruws. I t needs to be nourished in order to develop into completeand perfect faith. Faith needs to belived and nourished to maturity by experience. The apostle Paul rejoiced thatthe Thessalonians had faith that "groweth exceedingly." 2 Thess. 1: 3.Yes, faith is like a grain of mustardseed. It must continuously grow to maturity. It has to be alive! It starts small, just like the grain of mustard seed, bu tit grows into perfection. (Luke 17: 5.)As we have so little of the fa ith ofChrist in us when we are begotten bythe Holy Spirit, how can we develop thefaith of Christ in us, to meet greaterand greater problems and overcome allworries and doubts?

A Living FaithDid you know that you may have adead fa.ith, as dead as a grain of mustardseed that wil1 never sprout? But whatyou want is t he k ind of fai th that is living, active and growing. Do you know

the Bible says you have to pu t somet hi ng w ith faith in order to make it aliving faith?

Faith Alone InsufficientContrary to what mos t people believe,

there is something that must be added tofaith to make it alive and perfect! Jamestells us: "Faith, IF IT HATH NOTWORKS, is dead, BEING ALONE," "FaithWITHOUT WORKS is dead." James2: 17, 26.

But how can that be? Can faith bemade perfect by work.r? Can faith growto perfection by works? Yes, becausefaith must be practiced, I t can't lie dormant as an empty belief because it can'tincrease that way. Faith needs exercise, jus t as the mustard plant needs sunlight, moistur e and soil. The trying of ourfaith works patience! James 1: 3.When faith is tested we learn patience. We learn to endure suffering patiently. When th e l esson of patience islearned, then we have had the experi-

ence of knowing t hat God will answerprayers, if we have had patience. Thisis how faith develops.Let us examine the case of Abraham. He is cal led the father of the faithful. How did God perfect fai th in Abraham? He put Abraham to the test. Rllt whatdid Abraham do, sit back and say "I havefaith" and yet do nothing about it?

When put to the test, Abraham didn'tdaub, and try to create his own faith.Instead he obeyed God and acted on hisfaith. He offered up his only begottenson as a proof of his faith. James concludes: "Seesr thou how faith wroughtwith his works , and by works was fai thmade perfect?" (James 2:22.) So fait hmust be acted UpU l I .

Notice how Abraham and all the holymen of old acted upon their faith: "Byfaith Abraham, when he was called to goou t i nt o a place which he should afterreceive for an inheritance, obeyed; andhe went out, no t knowing whi th er hewent." Heb. 11; 8.

Noah did no t have a dead faith; hebuilt an ark. Moses did not have a deadfaith; he chose to suffer affliction withthe people of God and forsook Egypt .Paul even refra ins from mentioning thegreat mul ti tude "who through faith . . .wrought righteousness, obtained promises, ou t of weakness were made strong, women received their dead raised to lifeagain ... that they might obtain a bette r resurrection." Hebrews 11: 33-35.All these people proved that they believed God by acting on their belief, ins tead of trying to sit back and conquerfears by themselves. But if our faith isso weak, how have we the will to act onour faith?

Why, Paul tells us that "it is Godwhich worketh in you both to will andto do of his good pleasure." (Phil. 2: 13.)God gives every chi ld begotten of Himth e will or determination to do whatpleases Him . God puts in our minds thedesire, the will to do what is right, justas we by nature have th e desire to dowhat is wrong, But we must yield to th eright desire and restrain the wrong wish.Having yielded to the right desire, wehave within us the nature of God whichhelps us carry out the will of God, justas our human nature led us to carry outthe will uf the flesh before we were converted.

Thus by having faith planted in us,Please continue un page J4

We Are What We Eat!RWE look about us we observe thatsickness is accep ted as the usualthing . In fact, it is a lmost a rar ityto find someone who has not had a majorillness or an operation.

But this is not according to God'sway. One of the blessings that he promised to those who obey Him is freedomfrom sickness. Ex. 23:25 : "And ye shallserve the Lord your God, and He shallbless thy bread, and thy water; and Iwi ll take sickness awa)' f rom the msdstof thee."Likewise, one of the curses for disobedience is diseaJe-Deut. 28:60."But," you may say, "how does that apply to our eating habits?'Just this. It is much harder to exhibitthe virtues of love, patience, and longsuffering if your body is constantly caus

ing you to be i rr itab le because of physical trouble. In I Cor. 9:25, Paul exhortsus to be "temperate in all things ." It isin this mortal state that we must overcome our passions, and therefore wemust employ every means at our disposalto aid us in this s truggle.

We are living organisms and, as such, require living food to sustain us inhealth. But do WP have to become "foodfanatics" to conform co the laws ofhealth? No. We have a reliable authority in the Bible and a di ligent study of itwill keep us from falling into fanaticiJm,since God is "he that teacherh manknowledge," Ps. 94: 10. We are told toseek "knowledge," II Perer 1, verse 6.This knowledge is not lim ired to anyone subject, but refers to knowledge ingeneral-knowledge of foods, too!Paul states in II Timothy 1:7, "ForGod has not given us the spirit of fear;but . . . of a sound mind:" We can easilyapp ly this phrase "sp ir it of fear" to food. Some people can 't enjoy meals outsideof thei r own homes because they are sofearful they might eat something "bad"for rhern. Food is not "bad" as a rule, butsimply may not contain adequate nourishment. If we learn to eat what foodsare mos t beneficial, we should not be"af ra id" to eat what is less healthful occasionally. As we lea rn in our classes at Ambassador, even science teaches that life cancome only f rom life. Now, if the foodwe eat is lacking v ital ity, hal f-dead, wewill also be half-dead and physicaIly unable to cont ro l our nature s so easily orto use to the fullest capacity the talentsGod has gi ven us.

God had given man laws of healthwhich man can learn no other way. Leviticus 11:1-23 and Deuteronomy 14:3-21 record for us the principles God

By Isabell Kunkelhas given us by which we may judgewhat flesh is healthful and what flesh isunhealthful. But there are other rules of hea lth wecan learn without special revelation.

Refined FoodsOnly in comparat ive ly recent timeshas it become. the practice among all

the people of a nation to eat refinedfoods. Formerly, only the rich could afford such fare.Today everything is handled accordingco the scheme of mass production. Foodstuffs are not consumed in the immediatelocal it ies where they are produced , butprocessed in large centers, then distributed. Foods must be treated with variouschemicals or otherwise so that they willnot be ruined by weevils and otherdestroyers during the long t ime that intervenes between production and consumption. This benefits the distributor, but is it healthful for the consumer?

"The Staff of Life"Take our most common food-wheat.

The miller removes from it the germwhich contains a vital oil and the brancon ta in ing vit al elements, common lycalled vitamins, that enable our bodiesto ut il ize the sta rch that wheat contains. What is left? A beautiful white flour yes - but one would hesitate to callit the "staff of life." Even the wholewheat flour available in most stores isnot as good as ir might be, because preservatives have been added to it to discourage weevils. This nullifies some ofits beneficial value. When using whole wheat flour 111recipes calling for white flour, reduce theshorten ing about one-ten th (1 tablespoon per half cup) and. increase theliquid about one-f if th . Of course, youcannot make white cakes with it but itmakes sat is fac tory spice and chocolatecakes, especially if one-half white flouris used.

If it is ava ilable, a l it tle soy flour, sayone cup to six cups of flour, will increasethe nutritive value of bread. If you cannot buy good whole wheat flour, put acertain amount of wheat germ in thewhite bread to augment its value.Food specialists tell us that even wholegrain flour loses much of its vitamin Econtent within a few days after it isground, so we can appreciate the wisdom of grinding only a few days' supplyat a time as was done in ancient timesand is still done in some Eastern countries. Nevertheless, it still surpasses whiteflour. In the past cornmeal has been a de-

readable food because it was alwaysmade of the whole grain. However, itdid breed weevils on the grocer's shelvesoccasionally. Removing the germ solvedthis problem. Now you can buy "degerminated" cornmeal, quite unfit forany weevil or human being. However, the germ is not wasted, since a finecooking oil is derived from it. Hominyis a poor food because during its processing, its yellow outer covering and thegerm are removed leaving only thestarchy portion.

SweetenersHoney is the sweet most often mentioned in the Bible, and I have come toconclude, having read of its variousqualities, that it is the very best one.White sugar, like whi te flour, has hadall the important elements removed, leaving only a carbohydrate, which duringthe process of its digestion, robs thebody of calcium. Natural sugar and to alesser degree, brown sugar are better because they retain some of the organicsubstances, but yet the proportion ofsugar to organic salts has been disturbedby the refining process. Sorghum molasses devoid of preservative, and puremaple sugar and maple syrup are acceptable sweetening agents. Honey and sor

ghum may be used the same as sugarin all baked foods, bu t should not beadded to foods cooked on the stove, suchas fruit or pudding, un ti l it is removedfrom the fire as boiling honey or marlasses produces a strong flavor.Since honey and molasses containwater, the liquid in baked foods mustbe adjusted accordingly. Substitute honeyfor sugar , cup for cup, and reduce thel iquid which the rec ipe calls for by onehalf, or replace one -ha lf the sugar withhoney and reduce the liquid one-quarter.I have found that one may use a fourthor more less of these than of sugar thatany recipe may requi re and still have asweet enough product.

You may be more encouraged to usehoney or sorghum if, at first, you canfind recipes that call for them. Then,af te r you have successfully used them, you will know how a product made withhoney should look and taste. Modifyingyour recipes to conform to natural ingredients will cause ext ra work, butafter you get adjusted to using them, youwill be repaid by added flavor and improved health.

Corn syrup is as unacceptable as whitesugar because it also is devoid of naturalminera ls . It is usually recommended asan ing redient in infant milk formulas,Please continue on page 13

How d o you derive the figure of 2520years of punishment fo r Israel? This is a basic question involvingGod's method of giving us prophetickeys so that we may unlock the mysrer i--s of Bible prophecy. In I Peter 1: 19

20, we read that no prophecy is of anyprivate, or individual, interpretation.:herefore we must not interpret aprophecy apart from other scripture andusing our own human understanding toarrive at a conclusion. We must comparescripture with scripture to find the scriptural interpretation of Bible symbols. In this case, we should first understand that in Leviticus 26, God promisedIsrael great national blessings, includingthe promises of national greatness toAbraham (Verse 42), if they wou ldobey Him. Then God promised that ifthey obst inately refused to obey Him,He would punish them for a periodcalled seven times.

Now let us see how the Bible interprets the meaning of times. Turn toRevelation 12:6,14 and you will see byexamination that the two periods oftime mentioned in these verses are exactly the same in length. They amountto 3Y2 years in both cases. Thereforewe know that in a prophetic sense theword times simply means years! ALSO,in verse 6 we see that the Bible itselfshows that these years can be dividedinto 360 days each. No w multiplyingthese seven times or years of punishmentby 360, we find that this gives us 2520days.But where do the years come in? Letus see God's prophetic definition of dayswhen applied to the punishment of nations. In Numbers 14:34, God said Israel would bear their iniquit ies after thenumber of days they searched the land;forty days, each day for a year. This isthe Bible definition of a day of punishment! God is consistent! So we see that the seven t imes oryears of Israel's punishment equals 2520days ( 7X 360 ), and that these days, according to scriptural interpretation, areactually 2520 years. As a /inal conclusive piece of evidence, let us examine the well-known"seventy weeks" prophecy found in Daniel 11: 21-27. Through the angel Gabriel,

    The GOOD NEWS

God here revealed to Daniel that itwould be 69 weeks from the commandment to rebuild Jerusalem unt il the appearing of the Messiah, and that Hewould confirm the covenant with manyfor one week.Using the day for a year example ofEzekiel 4:6, we find that these 69 weekswould equal 483 years. The principaldecree to rebuild Jerusalem was in 457B.C., and it was exactly 483 years unt ilJesus was baptized and began his publicministry! So we see that God is fai thfulto perform His word!Israel's punishment began in 721 B.C.,and since 1800 A.D., 2520 years later,England and the United States begantheir rise to world power. For the astonishing proof of this fulfilled prophecy, send today for the free booklet, 'TheUnited States in Prophecy." History conhrms the words of Jesus, "Thy word istruth!"

We Are What We EatContinued from page 12

bur honey is far superior. Honey suppliesvital elements in addition to sugars.Shortening

For shorten ing either l iquid peanut ,corn or soybean oil, or butter are preferable to the hydrogenated vegetableshortening that is SO widely used, since.in the hydrogenation process all vitaminsin the natural oil have been destroyed.Olive oil is good for foods browned inthe cooking process, but fat other purposes some may object to the unfamiliarflavor. It is of ten used as an ingredientin salad dressing. Lard is never to beesed. When I have used the liquid oils inbaking, using the same proportion asfor other kinds of shortening, the resultshave been satisfactory.Leavening

The advisability of using bakingpowder seems to be a debatable subject.According to experiments conducted byone group of researchers, a moderateamount seems to inflict no harm to thebody. The principal objection seems tobe that in the process of its action, some

Page 13vitamins in the food are destroyed. I fone has any doubt about the wholesomeness of the aluminum type of bakingpowder, use a tar trate type. Fine cakesmay be made without leavening. Thesecret of the ir lightness is tha t they usemore eggs and require a great deal ofbeating.Yeast is a good leavening any time.It is seldom used in cake because it is alittle more tedious to make them withyeast.

"]eIla"Prepared gelatines such as "jello," andplain gelat ine have been questioned. Asthey contain both beef and pork products, we cannot use them. An exception

to this is Knox gelatine which claims tobe made entirely of beef products. Here in the college kitchen, we usea vegetable gelatine which is entirelysatisfactory. It is plain-unflavored andwithout added sugar-so, to flavor it,f ru it juice is used for part of the liquid. It may be used in any recipe requiringpla in gelatine. A pound of this gelatinewould last the average family a longwhile, as it is very light.

Fresh VegetablesFresh or frozen vegetables are alwayspreferable to canned vegetables excepttomatoes which, food chemisrs rell us ,retain their vi tamin C even after cooking. Vegetables need not be cooked ata boiling temperature. A heat just belowboiling in a tightly covered vessel isbest for them. Cook them a little longerrather than to use a high heat as this

is destructive to the water-soluble elements which boil away in the steam.Potatoes should be cooked in their skinsto preven t loss of vital elements in thewater. Then rhey may be peeled andprepared any way desired. Baked potatoes seem to be the favorite of thestudents here. Beets should be cooked intheir skins until almost done; thenpeeled and prepared with whatever seasoning is desired.Butter, cream and lemon juice aregood seasonings. Carrots are good seasoned with honey and butter, and baked.Fresh vegetables and fruits should always be thoroughly washed to removeany spray residue that may be on them.Even then, some may remain. The bestthing to do is grow your own if it isat all practicable.

The canned condensed soups that areavailable are poor products because, inorder to condense them, they have beencooked for a long time in open kettles. The flavor and pulp are left, but notmuch else.

Many dates are being treatedwith a chemical to prevent spoilage, andthe sulphur dioxide used to preserve thelight color of dried peaches, pears andapricots is said to destroy some of the irvitamins. They are probably as satisfactory as bought canned frui ts, buthome-processed fruits are superior.

SaltYou have probab ly heard arguments"pro" and "con" regarding the use ofsalt. Recently it has become the cry thatall use of salt is harmful. Shall we believe this? In Leviticus 2: 13 God commanded all of the offerings that were of

fered to be seasoned with salt, and inLuke 9: 49 Jesus affirms this. In the following verse (verse 50) the referenceJesus makes to salt is undoubtedly a companson showing that the Christianshould be to the earth what salt is tofood, inferring that salt of itself is good.As with all other things, it should beused with discretion.I have said that yOll probably cannotbuy good whole grain products unlessyou live near a large town where a healthfood store can be found. I f you don 't ,you can order these foods from the companies that prepare them. The addressesof some may be round in various magazines i n t e r e ~ t e d in this subject ; or betteryet, bur your own small mil l and makeyour own breakfast cereals, cornmeal, and flour. This is the most economica lway because the grains can be morecheaply obtained before they have beencommercially processed. The ones youmay order prepared cost more than ordinary foods in the grocery stores, bu t theflavor and quality are so much bet te rthat you will not regret the extra cost.A principle to remember when cansidering any food is this: How has itbeen processed, and to what degree maythis process have affected its composition/ One can often learn much abouta product by reading the label. Any refining that goes beyond the point ofrendering a food palatable is usual ly undesirable. Addit ional process ing is ordinarily either ( 1) to make it look moreappealing, or (2 ) to save the housewifet ime and work. The first often appealsto our vani ty , while the second, ease ofpreparation, is often over-emphasizedand food value is least considered. In this limited space I have endeavored to present adequate reasons for using natrcral [oods and some good ways

How YOU CanHave FAITHContinued [rom page I Itogether with God's very nature (2 Peter1:4), we have the strength to per fectf ai th by exerci sing i t - to make faithstrong enough to meet every obstacle.Doing What Is Right

Since faith must be acted upon, byworks, we can now see why the apostleJohn said: "And whatsoever we ask, wereceive of him, because we keep hiscommandments, and do those thingsthat are pleasing in HiJ sight." (I John3:22.) It not only takes faith to knowthat we will receive what we ask for, butit also takes our obedience to God toprove that our faith is real and living.Hut many will ask why obeying Godneeds to be added to faith to receive answers to prayer. Let's take an example.

How often if is said: "Sure, I knowthat God can prosper me if I tithe."That's the kind of dead faith that mostpeople have. Their faith is not growingbecause rhey are not putting it to thetest. We must prove our faith that Godwill prosper those who honestly pay thetithe. Then it can be seen just how muchfaith we have.We may start to trust God and giveour tithes and offerings faithfully. Thenwhat happens? When we look on theoutward circumstance, it always seemstha t God is not f ai thfu l to carry Out hispromise. And so we begin to doubt. Welack faith, and our works prove it so.Unless you would have pu t fai th to thetest, you would never have known jusrhow weak your faith really was!By continuing to tithe, no matterwhat the circumstances may indicate, you are developing faith in the promiseof God. And when you have faith, livingand growing, then God promises thatwhatever you ask according to His willshall be done unto you. The reason mostpeople do not get their answers toprayer is that, as in the case of tithing, they prove their lack of faith by refusalto ohey God. They mistrust and disbelieve God. Such people are not pleasingGod, because it takes faith to pleaseHim.

Where's One's Heart IsNo t only is tithing a good test forfaith, to see whether we will trust God tosupply our every need, bu t it is also indicat ive of where ou r heart is; because

where our treasure is, there will our

February, 1952heart be also. (Mat. 6: 19-21.) By givingour treasure to God, toward His Kingdom, we are seeking first the kingdomof God and His righteousness. And thepromise of Jesus, you remember, is thatif we seek these FIRST, all [he otherthings that we need in this li.e will beadded. (Mat. 6:33.)

Thus by proving our faith by ourworks, we are developing Chris t' s fai thin us so that we learn to t rust God with-out doubting. We are actually li'ving byfaith! Each successive time our f ai th ispu t to the test we s trengthen it, increaseit so that we are able to believe greaterand greater promises and overcome increasingly serious problems. It becomesgradually more natural to possess faithwithout wavering, because wheneverfaith might have wavered, we are put tothe test and strengthened!Fai th is like the grain of mustard seedthat by nature becomes s turdier witheach passing day. No wind of circumstance causing doub t can root ir out ofour hearts. With fai th exercised, we nolonger doubt when some material circumstance seems to indica te tha t Godhas failed. We need never look to theoutward appearance, but l ive as though, through patient endurance, we continually expecr the promise. Only when wequit l iving by our t ru st and faith in Godwill doubts overtake us.

The promises of God are absolute because God can not lie. But we must fulfill the conditions by a living faith inthe will of God. By obeying God andshowing that we know what he promised He will perform! Cast all your caresupon God for He cares for you. (I Peter5:7.)

How To Be SavedContinued from page 2

God's LAW" (1 John 3:4.) Sin is thinkand doing wha t God says is wrong-and He says it in His Law! Some thinkit perfectly all right to divorce and remarry. Others think ir is a sin. To do itwould trouble the conscience of the latter, bu t not of the former. The man who does what he thinks isright may be committing a lot of sin!God says: "There is a way that seem-eth right unto a man, but the end thereofare the ways of DEATH!" (Prov. 11:12and 16: 25 .) Again, "The way of a foolis right in his own eyes." Provo 12: 15) ,and "All the ways of a man are clean inhis own eyes." ( Prov. 16: 2.) The worldhas been going the WAY that seems right

to man for some 6000 years. But thisWAY has brought only unhappiness, emptiness, discontent, poverty, inequality, fear, anguish, strife, suffering, sickness and disease, and finally, CHAOS and

February, 1952DESPAIR all over the world! I t has produced NOTHING GOOD!God says "SEEK YE the Lord while Hemay be found, call ye upon Him whilelI e is near; let the wicked forsake hisway, and the unrighteous man bisibougbrs; and let him return unto theEternal, and He will have mercy uponhim; and to our God, for He will abun

dantly pardon. For MY THOUGHTS ARENOT YOUR THOUGHTS, NEITHER AREYOUR WAYS MY WAYS, saith the Eternal."(Isaiah 55: 6-8. )The WAY of SALVATION

And there is THE WAY of Salvation! The re is THE WAY to find GOD! SEEKHIM, by forsaking-wHAT? ForsakingYOUR WAY-your tbougbts! The wayyou have THOUGHT to be right has beenthe way of sin, leading to DEATH! FOR~ A K E THAT WAY' You 'l l find GOD'STHOUGHTS-GOD'S WAy-in the Dible, expressed in the one word "LovE"-inthe two Great Commandments-in theTEN Commandments-and in turn magnified still further all th ru the Bible! Inthe Bible you' ll find the MINDof God His way of thinking-His way for youto LIVE-HIS WILL!The first step toward salvation is to

REPENT-and tha t means forsake yourway-the customs and t raditions youhave been following-the ways of men- t h e ways you have been l iv ing. Sin isthe transgression of GOD'S LAW. His lawis HIS WAY. You have not been livingthat way. FORSAKE YOUR WAY-turnto God's way-the way of HIS LAW!The way of HIS WILL! Yes, the WAYof peace, happiness, and joy-the WAYof success, achievement, doing good, ofprosperity-the WAY of the full andABUNDANT l ife-the WAY of ETERNALLIFE!Since the entire Bible contains themagnified explanation of GOD'S LAW,the Bible becomes OUR GUIDE FORRIGHTEOUS AND SUCCESSFUL LIVING!That is why Jesus said man shall live byevery Word of GOD! That is THE WAY- and the onl way-to find and gainwhat all people WANT-success, happiness, eternal life. But people are seekingthese things THE WRONG WAv, Therefore, FORSAKE THAT WRONG WAY!The FIRST STEP toward being saved- toward receiving the gift of e te rna ll ife-is to REPENT! And the only kindof repentance that is prerequisite to the

gift of eternal life is COMPLETE ANDUNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER TOGOD-to His will, which means to HIS LAW.True repentance means you give yourSELF to God. You become HIS, literally, and wholly, with no reservations! True, godly sorrow for the life you have lived

uiores repentance, bu t that a lone is notrepentance. Repentance is a COMPLETE

The GOOD NEWSCHANGE in your l ife-in your attitudetoward l ife-your purpose in life-yourthoughts and your actions. It means you forsake the OLD LIFEas you have l ived it, TOTALLY AND COM-PLETELY, once and for all. It means forsaking some of your old friends andcompanions-if they are living theworldly life that seems right to MAN.It means turning from, forsaking worldly customs, interests, pleasures that arecontrary to GOD'S WAYS.It means total, unreserved CONSE-CRATION of your life to God-henceforth to STUDY THE BIBLE-not justcarelessly read, but STUDY, to learnGOD'S WAYS, and to LIVE BY EVERYWORD OF GOD! It means THE BIBLEbecomes your guide to living-yes, tohappy, abundan t, gracious living, andSUCCESSFUL and righteous living, henceforth and forever-to live your life fromnow with GOD'S HELP, ami BY HISPOWER, according to the spirit and principle, as well as the let ter and precept ,of His Commandments.

The FAITH That SAVESNow ask yourself, candidly, HOWMANY peop le who profess salvationwho have "accepted Christ"--do you believe have REALLY COME TO THISKIND OF REAL REPENTANCE? "Exceptye REPENT," warned Jesus, "ye shall alllikewise PERISH." And again, "He thatSAITH, 'I know Him,' and keepeth not

His Commandments, is a LIAR, and thetruth is not in him." ( I John 2:4.) Yes,MILLIONS ARE DECEIVED!But if mil lions are deceived about theprior CONDITION of repentance, justas many mi ll ions are deceived as to theKIND of FAITH that SAVES!Now think a moment! Use your reason. We are taught, and rightly, that wecannot EARN our salvation-it is theGIFT of God. I t is of GRACE-and"grace" means undeserved pardon, orfree gift . Ye t, notice how inconsistentpeople are! They argue there must beNO WORKS-no obedience of the Commandments , or doing coon-c-becausesalvation comes by GRACE-Gad's freeGIFT. And yet they seem to believe that

somehow WE must supply the FAITHthat brings salvation! If WE work up, orsupply this FAITH by which we aresaved, would not t ha t in fact amount toour producing our own salvation by thevery WORKS of supplying this FAITH?

SO notice, briefly! Notice moreCLOSELY than you did before! "For BYGRACE are ye saved through FAITH;and that (that FAITH) not of your-selves; it (this saving FAITH) is thegift of GOD." (Eph. 2: 8. ) The faith thatreally saves is GIVEN TO US by GOD--itis a GIFT from HIM! You don 't supplyit, or work it up.

Page ISDid yOll ever nor io- rhar hpforplWell what, then? In Gal. 2: 16 Paulexplains a man is just ified only "by thefaith of Jesus Christ." Noti ce, he doesnot say, by the man's faith IN Jesus

Christ-he says by "the faith of JesusChrisr't-i-which means CHRIST'S FAITH- t he faith HE has and uses-the samefaith with which He performed all Hismiracles-the same faith by which Helived-HIs faith, placed by a miracle,as a gift d irect from God , into the man 'So it is not Jour faith-not your bel ieving in Him-i t is HIS fa ith placedwithin YOU, and thereafter working inyou! FAITH is not something you generate or work up. You can't supply thekind of faith that saves. GOD GIVES ITto yO\!, places it within you-i t is not ahuman, bu t a divi ne faith! Faith is oneof the GIFTS of God's Spirit-s- (readI Cor. 12:1-9).

SO PLEASE UNDbRSTANU' Salvation isGOD'S GIFT. You do not, cannot, earn it.God GIVES it. But-and here is wherepeople become mixed up, and stumbl e-God will GIVE it only on condition!Yes, there are terms and conditions! Godhas set these terms, and you can't alterthem, and He won't change them!First, you must R E P E N T ~ Secondly, you must BELIEVE the GOSPEL-theMessage Christ preached-His Messageabout the coming world-ruling K!NG-DOM OF GOD to rule all nat ions ; and youmust BELIEVE ON CHRIST, the divineMessenger who hrought rhe GospelMessage! Those two conditions YOUmust supply. That much BELIEVINGyou must do!But rhose thiugs you do are not thethings that SAVE YOU. They are merelythe TWO CONDITIONS God demandsof you, to reconcile you to Him, so HEWILL SAVE YOU BY HIS GRACE.Paul explains "even we have believedin Jesus Chris t, that we might be justified BY THE FAITH OF CHRIST." (Gal.2: 16.) First, we repent and believe inChrist. That, WE do. I do not mean tosay for a second that you do not need tobelieve in Christ-that in some wayGod will supply the fai th that saves youwithout your accepting Christ as personal Saviour. Oh, no' You must repentand believe in Christ, as a condition, aprerequisite, IN ORDER THAT you maybe saved by the faith OF Christ-by HISfaith placed within you.'

Cu t Off From GODYou see, all have sinned. All havegone the way that seems right in humaneyes. And our sins have cut us off fromGod. "Your iniquit ies have separatedbetween you and your God, and yoursins have hid His face from you, that Hewill not hear." (Isa, 59:2.)Now salvation-eternal life--comes

Page 1(,from GOD. But your sins have cut youoff from God. The connection is SEV-ERED. God will no t GIVE you His giftof FAITH by which He also gives youeternal life until you are reconciled toHim!

But He so LOVED you, that He GAVEHis only begotten Son, Jesus Chri st , toDIE FOR YOU so that you need not perish-but, thru Jesus Chri st , be broughtinto contact with Him so He can GIVEyou eternal life!

The PENALTY of transgressing Hi slaw is DEATH. Jesus paid tha t penaltyin your stead. If, and when, you TRULYREPENT, as explained at length above, and BELIEVE on Jesus Christ as yourLord and personal Saviour from sin andfrom sinning, then by and thru Him yougain access to GOD THE FATHER.

The rwo conditions of turning fromsin, and accepting Christ ( includingbaptism), you must do yourself. That'swhat you must do. That is not whatsaves you. It merely reconciles you toGod-brings you into CONTACT withGod, so that God will then GIVE YOUHis Holy Spirit-and His Spirit is thegift of the FAITH that saves-and it isalso the Spirit of understanding, ofknowledge, of the LOVE that fulfills theLaw, of power, of self-control, of patience, of gentleness, kindness, goodness-of th e very nature and 'Very life ofGod!

HOW to Be SavedNow, finally, just HOW shall you go

about it?Must you go down the aisle in achurch? Must you go to a public altar, and shed tears in front of o thers, andpray aloud before others?Being converted is no t an initiationinto a lodge or secret society' It is not arite or ceremony! It is a matter of turning FROM the old l ife that was false, yet
