College Atmosphere at Ambassadorby Rod MeredIth

Just what does rhe day-co-day life ofa student at Ambassador College consistof? Are the s tudents here so religiousminded that they have no time for recreui iuu au d Iuu:' Whal is the outlookfor an incoming student at AmbassadorCollege! In the following paragraphs 1, RodMeredith, third-year student at Ambassador, will try to give all interestedreaders a completely frank idea of howthe college "atmosphere" here at Ambassador stacks up to me.Typical Collegiate SkepticismTwo years ago I was a freshman student at my home-town junior college inthe medium-sized midwest city where Ihad grown up. I was active in student affairs and had been all through highschool where I had excelled in suchsportS as track, football and boxing.

But now I was in college taking aphilosophy course and becoming skeptical of the world as a whole.Yet I was somewhat interested in religion, and had been encouraged by myuncle to listen to "The Wor ld Tomorrow" program over XEG. I found thatMr. Armstrong's sermons made my placein the world seem more real than theabstract philosophies I had been studying. He made God seem more definite andgenu me to me than the idealistic speculations and political nonsense I heardin the big Protestant church I was attending.God had always seemed real to mebecause my parents had taught me topray when I was a small child. But, asI pored over my philosophy books, disturbing thoughts came into my mind. Iearnestly desired to find out-some

way, some how-what life was reallyall about. Then I Came to Ambassador

Dui iLlg the next su uuuer a series ufcircumstances together with a let te r ofencouragement from my uncle made medetermine to come to Ambassador College.Immediately I began to wonder, "Whatwill my friends think?" Most of themhad gone, or would go, to the nearbystate university. I had planned to dothe same.At Ambassador I wouldprobably missa lot of college life,-or would I? Iasked myself if the students out therewould be like the "Bible college students" I had known in the past. Wouldthey all be either "sissies" or "intellectuals!" Were they a lot of timidpeople just h id ing behind their Bibles,or did they live a full and purposefullife? I wondered--After I came to Ambassador thesequest ions began to clear up-and howhappily!Because of the small s tudent enrollment that year, I was thrown into inti

mate contac t with every other s tudent .Mosr of the men students lived on thethird floor of "Mayfair," our wonderfulstudent residence.I had the privilege of rooming withHerman Hoeh, then in his junior yearat Ambassador. I found him to be abrilliant student, but also the kind of guyyOll like TO he a rourrd. There were a lotof othe r fellows like that, too. Some ofthe o the r s tudents had been on athleticteams, and one of the other new studentsand I enjoyed tel ling one another abourour "mighty deeds" in the box ing ring. And, as in every dormitory, we had

some "practical jokers" around. Yes,most of us were still "green" in Bibleunderstanding. But beside our desirefor fun and laughter, we all had aserious purpuse in coming to Ambassador.

"Pretty Nice, After All"We let the older students sort of setthe pace around the campus. We newerstudents were inclined to waste a lot ofour time at first, but we soon learnedthat we would have to keep busy inorder to make the grade here at Am

bassador. I found the courses here weremore "rugged" than in college al !JOUleThis was partly because of the smallsize of the classes, the daily personalizedinstruction, and consequently the necessity of preparing one's lessons for eachclass. The academic standards at Ambassador are maint ained at a high level, andevery professor is of unusual calibre. But I soon discovered another uniquething about our faculty; every professorhas a "heart." I began think ing thatcollege life here was pretty nice afterall. The course in Bible unde r Mr. Armstrong was of primary interest to methat first year. The class was somewhatinformal, and all the students really got

to know Mr. Armstrong. Also, we wereable to discuss freely what the Bibleitself said about various points-andnot be contradicted by a lot of manmade teachings. It was a pleasure to know that wecould accept the plain, simple statementsout of the Bible. We went into a studyof the theory of evolution in class, andlearned BOTH sides of the question. After studying the TRUE Bible story of

Page 2creation, and then reading anrl discussing the theory of evolution, we agreedunanimously with the apostle Paul whenhe warned Timothy to avoid the "vainbabblings and oppositions of sciencefalsely so-called" ( l Tim. 6: 20).The new students soon found that Mr.Armstrong was nei ther a wild-eyed reformer, nor a sanctimonious person. Heis a profound student of the Bible anda man of action. He strives to be a"doer" of the law, and oat a hearer only.He believes in serving God and his fellow man with all of his might andstrength-and not being sanctimoniousabout it, but wearing a smile wheneverpossible.Indeed, this is the attitude of thechurch and college here in Pasadena. We try to give .God the credi t for whatis accomplished, though, because weknow that it is the power of God's HolySpirit which enables his servants to perform the great work tha t must be done.

Life at MayfairOur life at Mayfair was a lot differentlast year than it is now. Since there wasonly one girl student, Betty Bates, theboys all cooked their meals in a separatekitchen that year. Betty ate with Mrs.Mann, our "house mother." We had alot of fun at mealtime, and fixed somemarvelous "concoctions" to eat. We triedto buy health foods, though, and seemedto get along well. Paul Smith fromLouisiana was our chief cook and turnedout to be a good one.All the students were work ing the irway through school, so we had to keepbusy in order to work, study, wash dishes, eat and sleep. We all worked around thegrounds here at Mayfair or at the collegedoing such jobs as paint ing, t rimmingtrees, t ransplant ing trees and bushes, and cleaning up the grounds and buildings. Most of the fellows have comefrom farms, so we had a lot of fun seeing what the "farm boys" could do andwhat they liked as compared with the"city boys."

Why We' re HereOnce I got adjusted to my new environment, I began to realize more than

ever that all the students were here foran underlying serious purpose. We allwanted to learn more about the Bible, and about the God who created us, andour relationship to Him.We were all in dead earnest aboutthis, yet we didn't want to "swallow"anything. So we studied and discussedthe Bible and tried to grow in trueChristian living; but we were carefulnot to go off the "deep end" on anything. Some of us were baptized earlythat fall. Others wai ted unt il later. Noone was pressured or even asked whyhe didn't accept the truth, repent, accept

The GOOD NEWSChrist as personal Saviour, and be baptized.

That is one unique thing about Ambassador College-everyone is recognized and respected as a free moralagent and allowed to make his own decisions completely in such matters.I was rather skeptical at first andwanted to "check up" on Mr. Armstrong, and the work and college. But I soonlearned by the "fruits" that this institution is wholly dedicated to Almighty God, and although human errors are sometimes made, they are admitted and corrected whenever they arediscovered. I also learned that this workis based upon the Word of God and isnot subject to the error of modern"churchianity." I was baptized in December.

Older Students' ExampleIn the meantime, the older studentshad been se tting a wonderful examplefor the newcomers.They. put into practice the principlesof Christ ian living, day in and day out. They were diligent students of the Bible, .and were glad to discuss Bible subjectswith us. Also, we began to realize thatthey were keeping close to God inprayer.Following Christ's example, they madeno effort to pray openly. Rather, it wasa very private affair. Sometimes wenewer students would waken in the veryearly morning to find our roommatesgone for no apparent reason. Often Iwould accidentally see some studentemerging from an empty closet or store

room. Nothing was ever said, but Iknew that they had an intimate relationship with God which I lacked. The ir example helped me a lot, andI am sure it helped others. This articlemay make some of our students selfconscious for a lit tle while, but I wantto give you co-workers a really intimateknowledge of them. I am proud ofAmbassador College and of our student body, and I know you will be whenyou learn more about them. This year we have even more students-especially girl students. Because ofthe larger studen t body, we have morerules and regulations to observe, but wealso have more advantages.

Our eating habits are un iform now.Mrs. Wallace, our health-food cook, prepares delicious meals which we all eatin the Mayfair d in ing room. A specialcourse has been introduced under thedirection of Dr. Ralph E. Merrill inwhich the students are taught moreabout the r ight kinds of food to eat.Wehave also had a comprehensive courseunder Mr. Armstrong giving us God'sviewpoint on sex and the marriage relationship as well as the best scientificinformation available on this subject.

June, 195'1Social LifeIn the athletic sphere, we have hadmany unusual advantages. We have aweekly swimming class at the YW.CA.which has provided a great source ofinterest and enjoyment. At the college we have facilities forvolleyball, badminton, tennis, and tabletennis available to our physical educa

tion class and all interested students. Wesometimes take trips to the mountainsand go on hikes which are always agreat deal of fun. During the winterseason a special trip was made into thesnow-country near Mount Wilson andwe went tobogganing and had snowballfights. We have had several parties this yearand one of the most enjoyable was a"childhood party" sponsored by the girls.During the evening, we had a taffy-pull,popped popcorn and enjoyed variousstunts and games. Our student council is the source ofmany social occasions. One outstandingrecent event was a "beach party" wherewe went swimming or hiking, built abonfire and roasted all-beef wieners. One regular college function is a biweekly educational movie as selected forthe college by an educational film bureau. All of these activities help develop poiseand personality, and are an integral partof a student's training here at Ambassador.Although these are only some of theaspects of students' life, I hope this article will give you a good picture of ourcollege activities. As a comparatively new student my

self, I would like to say to all prospective students: If you like good, cleanfun, if you aren't afraid of work, and ifyou're sincerely interested in learningabout the Bible and about the God whomade you, if you earnestly want a goodeducation, then be sure to come toAmbassador College next fall.Don't try to compare Ambassadorwith other colleges. It can't be done. They may have more buildings andequipment, but you'll get more personalinstruction here. Most important, though, this is the ONLY college where God'sway of life is taught and practiced. In regard to you personally: If you'renot a brilliant student, don't be alarmed.

None of us are geniuses, either! As tofinances, save what you can, but remember that we are all working our waythrough school.I f you have personal questions aboutthe college, be sure and write to Mr.Armstrong, Box 111, Pasadena. Or, ifyou wish, write to me or to any of ourstudents at 182 South Orange Grove inPasadena. If you're really interested, then by allmeans come to Ambassador next year. You'll always be glad you did!

HOW TO OBSERVE THE SABBATHHere are the answers to your most perplexing questions! Should weprepare meals on the Sabbath? Is it a violation of God's law totravel, to care for live-stock, or to harvest crops on the SeventhDay? Does God require us to attend Church? Or, again, is it atransgression of God's law to seek our own pleasure on that day?

by Raymond ColeF IRST, what purpose did God havein creating the Sabbath? Was itfor the benefit of all mankind?Or, was it made for one small nation,Israel, only?Christ has given the answer by sayingthat the Sabbath was made for MAN.I t was intended for the good of all mankind. And rightly so, for the law explicitly tells us that it is a day of res ta day on which we cease from all ourlabors, and worship God. I t is a holyconvocation, commanded to be observedthroughout all generations, forever!

Preparation of MealsGod says in Leviticus 23:2-3, "Concerning the festivals of the ETERNAL,which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my festivals. Sixdays shall work be done, but the seventhday is the Sabbath of REST, an HOLYCONVOCATION; ye shall do NOWORK therein; it is the Sabbath ofthe ETERNAL in all your dwellings,"A festival is a time of great enjoymentof good fellowship and rejoicing-atime when we may have the best foodto eat.No work-labor of earning a livelihood-is to be done on the Sabbath! Then, how and when are you going toprepare your Sabbath meals? Turn, now,to Exodus 16, beginning with the 22ndverse: "And it came to pass, that onthe sixth day they gathered twice asmuch bread, two omers for one man:and all the rulers of the congregationcame and told Moses. And he said untothem, This is that which the Lord hathsaid, tomorrow is the rest of the holysabbath unto the Lord: BAKE thatwhich ye will bake today (Fr iday), andseethe (to stew or boil) that ye willseethe; and that which remaineth overlay up for you to be kept until themorning."Friday is the day of preparation forthe Sabbath. Baking, broiling, stewing;and other methods of cooking, whichrequire time and work, are to be donethen. On the Sabbath-a day of REST,you may enjoy your meals, which canbe warmed up without the usual timeconsuming work required in prepara-tion.Again, Christ and His disciples werewalking through corn fields on the Sab-

bath. The Disciples, being hungry, plucked ears of corn to eat. When thePharisees saw it, they were critical ofChrist saying, "behold thy disciples dothat which is not lawful to do upon thesabbath day." (Mace. 12:1-3.)Jesus' answer found in Matt. 12:3-6shows that it is permissible to obtainfood to eat on the Sabbath. Christ knewhow the Sabbath should be observed.Jesus said nothing to the disciples butdid rebuke strongly the Pharisees saying, "But if ye had known what thismeaneth, I will have mercy, and notsacrifice, YE WOULD NOT HAVECONDEMNED THE GUILTLESS.Mace. 12:7. The disciples were nottransgressing the law of God when earing on the Sabbath. They were merelyviolating the traditions of the elders. Many will ask, "May I kindle a fireon the Sabbath? This question, of course,is quite natural. How could you warmyour meals if you had no fire? The law against kindling a fire inExodus 35:3 is not to prohibit any firewhatever. Rather it is to prevent unnecessary work in preparing and cooking meals on the Sabbath. Clarke's Commentary, Vol. I, page 479, states: "TheJews understand this precept as forbidding the kindling of fire only forthe purpose of doing work or dressingvictuals; but to give them light andheat, they judge it lawful to light a fireon the Sabbath day.The Critical and Experimental Commentary, Vol. I, page 419, explains:The Sabbath was not a fast day. TheIsraelites cooked their victuals on thatday, for which, of course, a fire wouldbe necessary; and this view of the insti tution is supported by the conduct ofour Lord (Luke 14: 1). But in earlytimes the Israelites, while sojourning inthe wilderness and subsisting on manna, received a double supply on the sixthday, which they cooked also on thatday (Ex. 16:23), so that a fire forculinary purposes was entirely unnecessary on the Sabbath day. As the kindlingof a fire, therefore, could only be forsecular purposes, the insertion of theprohibition in connection with the workof the tabernacle makes it highly probable that it was intended chiefly forthe mechanics who were to be employedin the erection; and . . . it was abso-

lutely forbidden to kindle any fire forthe sharpening of tools, for the meltingof metals, or any other material purposebearing on the sanctuary."Hence, according to the spirit of thelaw-which makes the Sabbath a delight-it would not be wrong to heatpreviously prepared meals or to warmthe home in wintery weather.Care for Cattle

What about feeding livestock, milking cows, erc.? Jesus taught: "Doth noteach one of you on' the Sabbath loosehis ox or his ass from the stall, and leadhim away to watering? And ought notthis woman . . . be loosed from thisbond on the Sabbath day?"Here Jesus was showing His criticsthat inasmuch as it did not break theSabbath to water and care for livestock, people also ought to be healed on theSabbath. Stock must be fed on theSabbath. Cows must be milked. So longas you are not required to take care ofthese duties on too large a scale, itdefinitely is no transgression of God'slaw. However, when a man runs a dairyrequiring the milking of so many cowsas to fill the Sabbath day with laborthe same as week-days, then perhaps heshould change his line of business toone which permits him, and his hiredhelp, to rest on the Sabbath.A brother near Eugene, Oregon, raisedturkeys. He ground and mixed his ownfeed. In late summer and early fall thisbecame a full day's labor. He solvedhis problem by grinding and settingaside a one-sixth over-supply on eachof the six week-days.When the Sabbathcame he had the day's feed alreadyprepared.Christ implied that if a sheep, ox,or an ass falls into a pi t on the Sabbath,it is right to lift it out. (Luke 14: 5.)But - Sabbath "emergency" is a genuineEMERGENCY, not an excuse to breakthe Sabbath. BUT-If our materialduties begin to replace our Sabbath obseruance, we must reduce them and putthe kingdom 0/ God first.SHOULD WE ATTEND CHURCHON THE SABBATH?Let us turn back to Leviticus 23:2 forjust a moment. "Six days shall work be

He answered them very curtly, saying, "I t islawful to do well on the Sabbath."(Matt. 12: 12.) Jesus did these thingson the Sabbath. Again, Christ in Luke6:9, accused the Pharisees of automatically destroying life or doing evilby not doing good on th e Seventh. Pleasures on the SabbathIs the Sabbath a day of darkness and

g loom! Or, is it a day of delight, happiness, and godly pleasure! We are to honor God on that Day.

Our own ways are to be repressed on theSabbath as on every day. Pleasures, suchas going to a baseball game, foorballgame or going for an automobile ride, are not to be done on the Sabba th . 11was created a day on which God is to beforemost in ou r minds-doing service

His law, He will cause us ( to ride uponth e h ig h places of th e earth). And, Hewill feed us with th e heritage of Jacobou r father. The Sabbath is, then, a dayof utmost joy and happiness .In conclusion, let us say as David did,"Oh how love I thy law! it is my meditation all th e day. Thou through thycommandments hast made me 'wisert ha n m ine enemies: for they are everwith me. I have more understandingthan all my teachers: for thy testimoniesare my meditation. Pagan Holidays-or God'sHolydays-Which?

of Weeks."Not ice the plain instruction beginning verse 15: "And you shall countunto you from the morrow after theSabbath, from the day that ye broughtthe sheaf of the wave offering; sevenWEEKS shall be complete: even untothe morrow after the seventh WEEKshall ye number fifty days." And thatfiftieth day is PENTECOST!''. . . And ye shall proclaim on theselfsame day, that it may be an holyconvocation unto you: ye shall do noservile work therein: it shall be a STATUTE FOREVER in all your dwellingsthroughout your generations," (Verse21) .All other holydays or festivals comeon definite days of definite months. Butthis one annual Sabbath must be determined by COUNTING. It is verysimple and plain. Any child should beable to start numbering from a definiteday and count fifty. Yet there are threelittle simple points which seem to confuse some few people so that they observe the wrong day.It is of very grave importance wefigure the right day. Thi s day, and thisonly, is made HOLY by the EternalCreator. Suppose at the time the Churchof God was founded the Apostles hadmis-counted, and "When the day ofpentecost was fully come," (Act s 2: 1)they, instead of being all with one accord in one place were in discord, somehaving observed the day preceding, andsome waiting until the following day!

Three ErrorsThe first of these three errors is figur

ing from the day after the first annualSabbath. The erring Pharisees figuredthat way. But the wave-sheaf was wavedon the morrow after the Sabbath-theweekly Sabbath. Christ fulfilled thatwhich it pictured on the day after theweekly Sabbath. So we always sta rt bycounting fifty days from a Sunday. The second mistake made by some isin count ing seven Saturdays instead ofseven WEEKS. As Moses wrote this inHebrew, the word "Shabbawth" was used. This Hebrew word has more than onemeaning. It means "seven," and "week"

The Wave-SheafBut let us continue the central pas

sage which summarizes all the holydays-Leviticus 23.Here we find all of God's festivals, proclaimed holy convocations, in the onechapter. First is the weekly convocation-day, the Sabbath, the seventh day ofthe week. Then, beginning verse 4, folIowa l is ting of the annual festivals, alsocommanded. assemblies, "which ye shallproclaim in their seasons,"First of these is the Passover, followedby the days of unleavened bread withthe two annual Sabbaths. Beginningverse 9, we find instructions for thewave-sheaf offering. The Israelites were not allowed toharvest any of the early grain crop untilthis day (verse 14). Then, on the dayfollowing the weekly Sabbath duringthe days of unleavened bread, in a solemn ceremony of the Levitical priesthood (the rituals were mere substitutesand therefore not practised today) thefirst sheaf of grain was cur and broughtto the priest. The priest solemnly wavedit before the Eternal to be accepted forthem. This pictures the resurrected Christbeing accepted of God as the very firsthuman to be actually born of God-the

first fruits of the first harvest of souls!(John 20:17; I Cor. 15:20,23; Rom.8:29; Col. 1:15, 18), This fulfillmentof the weave-sheaf offering actually occurred on Sunday, the morrow after theSabbath dur ing the days of unleavenedbread. How to Figure PentecostNext comes Pentecost. The word"Pentecost" is a Greek word, used in the

New Testament, but not in the Old,It signifies "fifty," or, literally, "countfifty," In the Old Testament this feastis called "Feast of Fwstf, uits," and "Feast

Was the New Testament Church founded on Sunday? What is thereal meaning of Pentecost, and why have the churches lost it?

by Herbert W. ArmstrongContinued from April number

main harvest-the much greater fallharvest. God intended His holydays topicture to His Church repeatedly yearby year the fact that only those He Himself calls during this age can becomeHis begot ten chi ldren now! And theyare merely the first-fruits of the greatspiritual harvest!

The Answer RevealedThe New Testament Church of Goddid not start on Sunday. But it did starton the annual Sabbath-day called "Pentecost," or. "Feast of First Fruits," alsocalled the "Feast of Weeks."The New Testament Church continued, year after year, to keep this annualSabbath, Pentecost, as we shall show. And God gave. this festival to Hispeople in order to reveal, and keep themcontinually informed, that the present

dispensation is only the first, preliminary"harvest of souls."As already explained, God's purposein g iving His Church His apnual holydays was to keep His children constantlyin true understanding of God's greatPLAN.To accomplish this, God took theyearly material harvest seasons as theplcture of the spiritual harvest of souls. In Palestine there are two annualharvests. First, produced by the earlyrain, is the spring grain harvest, Second, produced by the "latter rain," comes the

vation. They assume there is a great contestin progress be tween Christ and Satan. They believe Christ came to save theworld, and all these churches in theworld are His churches, through whichHe is desperately trying to "get theworld saved."On the other hand, the clever, deceptive devil is doing all he can to preventpeople from being "saved." And theyseem to believe there is a time-limit onthe contest. We are now near the time for thesecond coming of Christ, but whenChrist returns to earth in Person He willfind Himself helpless-utterly unableto save the world from Satan's clutchbecause then "it will be too late." "Probation will be closed," as one denomination expresses it.This paganized teaching representsSaran as far more powerful than God.

I s THIS the only "day of salvation?"The worldly churches teach thatall who die unsaved, or do not "getsaved" before the second coming ofChrist can never thereaf ter receive sal-

one day from Sunday is the very firstday that is "away out of" Sunday. Youcannot number Sunday as the first dayfrom Sunday, because it is not awayfrom it or out of it, but still in it. A carpenter who would count two feet froma house would certainly never set hismark two feet into the house. The word"from" never means "in to" bu t exactlythe opposite. Some people get mixed up by saying"A person going from Portland to LosAngeles came from Oregon to California," and they measure the miles fromPortland. They measure the distanceclear across Oregon, by beginning at thefar end and measuring INTO Oregoninstead of away our of Oregon. I wouldask such people to measure a distance of122 miles from Oregon. The way theycount, they would measure 122 milessouth from Portland, and arrive at Eugene, and say that Eugene is 122 milesfrom Oregon! Suppose it were exactly300 miles across Oregon from north tosouth. Such ridiculous figuring wouldcount tha t a person standing exactly onthe Oregon-Cali fornia border was 300miles from Oregon!

Jubilee Settles I tOne person brought up the expression "from head to foot." But this is acontraction of the original saying, "fromthe top of the head to the bottom ofthe feet." In this case these additionalwords are understood. Otherwise, inmeasuring from the head toward thefoot one would start measuring from thebottom of the head. But the counting of the JUBILEEYEAR settles the matter. God 's entire

PLAN is a sabbatical plan. There werethe seven days of creation-six of creat ion by work, and the seventh by rest.God's PLAN runs seven thousand years. There are seven annual Sabbaths. Therewas a sabbatical YEAR-every seventhYEAR. To count the Jubilee year, theybegan counting from, (not into butfrom) the preceding Jubilee. Sevenyears from this year was the first Sabbatical Year. Seven of these Sabbaticalyears were counted. Then the very nextyear AFTER the seventh Sabbatical year- t he FIFTIETH year-was Jubilee.Counting to the next Jubi lee they nevercounted that Jubilee year as numberone-but the year following it, or oneyear from it was number one That isthe way to count PENTECOST. It'sALWAYS on a MONDAY!

Meaning of PentecostPassover symbolized Christ's sacrificefor the remission of our sins, and thedays of unleavened bread the puttingaway of sin. Pentecost p ic tures the firstpart of the Spiri tual harvest-the callingPlease continue on page 10

Counting FROMNow if on a given Sunday somefriend arranges to go fishing or huntingwith you "one week from today," youcertainly would meet tha t friend on thenext Sunday. In counting from one Sabbath to another , we count seven days. And the first of those days counting

from a Sabbath is Sunday, the secondMonday, and so on until the seventhday from Sabbath is the next Saturday. This brings us to the third error. Some start counting fifty days from theSunday after the weekly Sabbath of unleavened-bread week, by numbering thevery day they count from as "Numberone," and then come out with Pentecoston a Sunday. There are TWO ways to count "Pen-tecost." First, count seven WEEKS fromthe particular Sunday following theweekly Sabbath in unleavened-breadweek, which brings you to the seventh

SUNDAY, and then count even to themorrow after that seventh week, and youwill correctly figure Pentecost to comeon MONDAY.Second, count FIFTY DAYS fromthis same Sunday, and that fiftieth day isPentecost. It is very simple. One dayfrom Sunday is Monday. Two days fromSunday is Tuesday. And so on until youcount fifty days from Sunday is Monc1:ty.The simple little word "from" means, according to Webster's dictionary, "awayout of." The day you count as number

    Number 2OL. I

as well as rest, and "the Sabbath" or seventh day of the week. Like the Englishwords, "saw," and "bear," it has morethan onc mcaning. The refore we mustput other Scriptures together with thisto let the Bible itself tell us whichmeaning is intended. In eight places in the New Testamentthis same Hebrew word was used in theoriginal writing to indicate the word"ieee]:" as in Mat. 28: 1. In Deut. 16:9we find another instruction for countingthis day of Pentecost. Here, a differentHebrew word was written by Moses'shabua't-c-which never means theweekly Sabbath, but always means"week." It says "Seven WEEKS shaltthou number unto thee; begin to number the seven weeks from such lime asthou beginnest to put the sickle to thecorn. And thou shalt keep the Feastof WF.EKS." Also Nurn. 28:26-sameHebrew word. Pentecost is the day afterthese seven WEEKS-"after your weeksbe out," and not the last day of thoseweeks. In Ex. 34, the very NAME ofthe Festival is Feast of WEEKS. Notfeast of "Saturdays." The Moffatt andother translations translate Ex. 23: 15"seven WEEKS shall be complete." Inview of these other Scriptures it cannotmean anyth ing else, though in the KingJames transla tion the word "sabbaths"was used. But the word "sabbath" ismerely the Engl ish spell ing of this Hebrew word which means WEEKS.

Swimming Class Is Funby Calvin H. Allen

Wednesday is a busy day at Ambassador College, but not too busy for thePhysical Education Class to go to a swimming pool for an hour of relaxation, learning and fun in the afternoon. As the time approaches to go, the rushfor bathing suits, towels and shampoobecomes quite rapid. Then suddenlyMayfair, the student dormitory, is leftsilent.Upon arrival at the pool, we line upto present our physical examination cardslike women in front of a departmentstore having a sale of nylon hose. Entering the shower rooms for a soap shower, laughing and talking, one suddenly discovers all the .stalls occupied by othersof our group. With this delay, we havejust enough time to get soaped very wellwhen a voice cal1s from the pool "in!"Quickly the boys .fall in line likeproverbial football fans for tickets tothe New Year's game at the Rose Bowl. With the boys coming in on one endof the pool and the girls on the other,we pause slightly for foot inspection, then with a splash-we have surprisedexpressions on our faces because thepool still has water in it.The melodious voice of the instructorsoon calls out, "Everyone down to thisend of the pool, please. Line up alongthis wall-shoulders to the wall andwith a scissors kick 1-2, 1-2."After switching from one stroke to another and from one kick to another forabout thirty minutes, we are urged to goto the deeper end of the pool. This isa simple test to determine if everyoneis capable of swimming the length ofthe pool on his back. With feet against the wall in order tostart off with a back float, we follow theinstructor who says with a commandingvoice, "Everyone go!"We get started wel1 when our neighbor beside us sends a small wave overour face just as we are in the midst oftaking a long breath. Hurling the waterinto rhe air like a submerging hippo,we must turn over, drain the water fromour noses and get set for a new start.

After we have finally succeeded in thetask of swimming the length of the poolon our backs (there are other strokeswe are learning too), the hour is swiftlycoming to an end.The instructor tells us we have aboutten more minutes to play or practiceif we wish. This ten minutes passes awaylike ice water at a picnic on the Fourthof July. Then the routine must be retrackedthrough the showers and dressing room.We check in keys at the desk and bidthe courteous ladies, with a thanks, "solong" until next week. One thing we fellows learned in addition to swimming, the girls do not likeus to see their hair when it is not ascurly and beautiful as it normal1y appears the morning after a night's workof putting it on rollers. Of course, it isusually denied, but at the dining tableon swimming evenings, the bandanasdeprive us of the sight of their hair!

Since the fine weather arrived thisspring, Mr. El1iott, our physical educacion instructor, has been taking us toplaces where we may enjoy mental aswell as physical recreation. It was almostrime for this classon Tuesday, May 8,when one of the students gaily notifiedus that today we were going to visit theHenry E. Hunt ington Library and ArtGal1ery in San Marino! This sounded good to us. Our interesthad already been aroused earlier in rheday by the colored slides showing someof the things to be seen there. After the members of the class haddivided their numbers comfortably between Dick Armstrong's car and that ofMr. El1iott,we drove south of the collegeseveral blocks and then east down California Street.Turning into the wide gate, we drovedown a short drive and parked in theparking lot. Some of the licenses revealedthat some people had traveled great distances to see this place.

At one end of this parking lot was alarge round flower bed in which poppiesand pansies were blooming abundantly.A short distance to the west of this beda low stucco building was approachedby several steps. Here a man in a blackuniform gave each of us a card. Theserequested us to sign our names, which wedid, though for what purpose we neverdid discover.Directly north of the wide sidewalkwhich leads west of this building intothe grounds, is the large stone structurewhich houses the collection of rare booksand manuscripts and letters. Fartherdown, another building similar to thefirst can be seen. This light gray stonemansion contains the famous paintingsand rare old furni ture and chinaware.Since our time was limited, we did oatinspect these attractions. We centered our attention on the different gardens and specimens which area major feature of the estate. The twobuildings JUSt mentioned are located on

an eminence which slopes sharply tothe south and west. On top, around themuseums are wide green lawns borderedwith various flowers, but on the slopeand along the small stream which windsaround irs base, trees of all kinds aregrowing. From here, we could see themisty blue hil1s far to the south. We were inclined to loiter at each newexhibit, "oohing" and "aahing" at eachcolorful and unfamiliar plant or scene,Occasionally, our instructor reminded uspolitely that we would have to stepfaster if we wished to see more. A labelhad been placed near each plant orgroup of plants in the gardens whichwas helpful to anyone particularly interested in such things. There are many varieties of camel1iasand rhododendrons growing in a bednorth of the art gallery. The candelabralike lavender p ink blooms of the rhododendrons were especial1y striking.Southwest of the art gallery we foundthe rose gardens and arbor which wasclothed with clock vine and wistaria. Thefragrance of the pendant pale lavenderwistaria blooms was simply enchanting.Below here was the Oriental Garden.Since it was time to retrace our steps, we

Two hundred acres comprise the complete estate, but only fifty of these areopen to the pub lic for exh ibi tion . Theremainder are used for experimentalpurposes. As we had entered the gate, we hadbeen so eager to see what was inside, that l it tle not ice was given to the smallbuilding. Now we discovered that heresmall copies of the pictures tha t may beseen in the art gallery are offered forsale; also small booklets descr ib ing thevarious attractions of the estate .As we returned to the college in thelate afternoon, I do not believe therewas one of us who did not wish we couldhave stayed longer, and who does nothope to return again to finish seeing whatis there.A Popular Sport atAmbassador

by Rod MeredithOne of the favorite forms of recreation here on the Ambassador College campus is table tennis. Mos t of the

suderus play, and many are quit e proficient at thi s sport. It is a convenien tand exhilarating pastime between classesand studying, and provides a muchneeded change of pace for our studentsand office scaff. We recently conducted our two annual table tennis tournaments-the student tournament and the open tournament, which is for the better studen tplayers and those of the office force. Both tournaments included somevery close and exc it ing matches. Oneof the best games in the student tourna

ment was between the two older NcNairbrothers (there are three here now!)Marion and Raymond. Marion played avery good game and employed some unusual chops and curs on the ball, bu tthe steady playing of Raymond finallywon out.

The final match was between Raymond and me. It , roo, was a fairly closegame. Although my slams and hard shotswon many point s, the calm per si st entreturns by Raymond eventually told thetale, and Raymond became the studentchampion.Next came the open tournament. Aftersome very hard-fought early matches, the tournament narrowed down to Raymond McNai r, t he s tuden t champion, and Mr. Vern Mat tson , Business Manager and last year 's open champion. Mr.Mattson plays a brilliant game, employing all kinds of cuts, chops and slams.

The GOOD NEWSHis colorful style of play always arousesthe instant enthusiasm of the spectators. However, Raymond has developed aunique ability to return almost any kindof shot-no matter how deceptive theCut or how hard the drive.

This final match, with the two opposite styles of play, might be comparedto the theoretical meeting of the irresistible force with the immovab lebody. After a colorful match, with everypoint being hard-fought, the immovableobject "just wouldn't budge" and Raymond McNair became the open champion. The players congratulated eachother, and those in the gallery complimented both players, because we allfelt that we had seen some thrillingtable tennis.

Ambassador College students visitedthe Pacific Press in Los Angeles to seethe first issue of The Good News Magazine come off the press. What we saw there is just part of theweek's work-to t urn out one and onehalf mi ll ion magazines, over a mi ll ionnewspapers and a half mil lion booklets

and folders.Nationally known magazines, including Life, Time, Quick, and Sunset, areprinted at this largest printing plantwest of Chicago. As we walked through the printingroom, Life magazine was rol ling fromone of the giant rotary presses at an unbelievable rate of speed. When comingto the mail ing room, we found the firstcopies of Life going through the automatic assembling line machinery, wherethey were mechanically assembled, stitched and trimmed, ready to come tothe mailing machines which automatically address all subscription copies.A month's printing at Pacific Pressrequires eighty-five thousand pounds ofink, seven and a hal f mi ll ion pounds ofpaper and two mil lion feet of wire.Think of the time, money and effortput into the priming alone for one ofthese national magazines, which have solittle of the real truth! Filled are pageswi th pic tures of the wretchedness tha tprevails in every corner of the ear th .

But the Good News reveals, to thosewhose understanding God has opened, the one and only right way of life forthis age and for the world tomorrow! How good it seemed to watch theGood News rolling, about 3 completecopies per second, off a smaller rotarypress, all printed, folded and cut-readyto be brought to our office at Pasadena

    PassoverHeld in TexasJust aBeginning

by Herman HoehSomething new was begun this yearwith the Passover season tha t ought tomake us all take note and courage. For the first time Mr. Armstrong sentone of the College students to hold thePassover service with church brethren inGladewater, Texas. Though a small beginning, 1 know, having been the onesent there, what it is going to mean tothe Church of God to have fellowshipon these annual occasions. Since most ofyou were not there, 1 think you want toknow exactly what God has begunamong His people. It occurted to Mr. Armstrong aboutfive days before the Passover that services could be held in Texas for some ofthe many co-workers and church members we have in that state.Like most accomplishments done byGod through human agents, it startedin very limited manner. There were notenough days to give adequate notice tothose living. f a r ~ away and the need ofassembling together on these annual occasions had not been stressed enough sotha t those notified would be zealous intheir efforts to attend. For several days, Mr. Armstrong spenthours, sometimes into the night, callingby long distance telephone those whomight possibly have been able to attend.Everyone at the office and college wasbubbling with enthusiasm to know thatat last a way was being provided whereby listeners could assemble to take thePassover. You brethren ought to know better how it feels to be alone on thesedays and on the Sabbaths. But if each ofus will zealously serve God and prayto Him, these necessary growths of thechurch will be accomplished muchsooner. How prophetic it is t hat somewho were notified were overjoyed to

hear of the meeting but jurt CfJuldn'tcome due to the circumstances. WhenJesus calls us to meet Him, will we beprepared to join him in his work or willthere be circumstances in the way?We hope tha t articles in this and following issues of the Good News on theannual Holy Days will reveal to everyone, God's purpose in these festive daysfor us. As it happened, wi th the except ion of three brethren, everyone at thePassover service had come to the Feastof Tabernacles held in Oregon. So it isour responsibility to tell you brethren

who haven't heard how these days oughtto be observed, JUSt how necessary theyare. The meeting having been arrangedfor Thursday evening in Gladewater,Texas, I was honored with my first planeride. Not on1y was this to be the beginning of greater things ahead for all ofthe church, but it surely was an educational privilege for me to travel throughstates in which 1 had never been before-I was a foreigner to Texans.I do not know how many of you coworkers realize it, but there are few ifany collegeswhich give so much ormeanso much to those students attendingthem. All we students can do is to bethankful for the education and practicalexperience we are receiving for theservice of God and then yield ourselvesto His wishes as He reveals.Perhaps some of you brethren havetaken planes at one time or another. Butit made me think, being up in the airfor the first time, what great and marvellous inventions God foreknew whenHe ordained the natural laws that regulate this universe. How li tt le sense men have who misuse the great potentialities for good thatlie in the vast realms of science! And tosee the earth from 17,000 feet up! allcut into little squares for hay, vegetationand orchards.Traveling from San Diego, California, to Dallas, over the barren wastes ofour Southwest, naturally reminded meof the extensive wastes and deserts thatcover the land, sPOtS where men can'tsurvive because of the sins of men whohave corrupted the earth. But there willbe a time when all these wastes will bedotted with pines, box elders, cedars, oak, roses, pastures, springs and streamsand fountains when the Creator sendsHis Son to teach and to enforce the rightway upon men everywhere (Isa. 41; 1820).

The world surely has shrunk since thedays of Paul, for the tr ip from Los Angeles to Gladewater began Wednesdayevening at ten thirty on the coast andended at eight twenty the next morning. But with such a tremendous task aheadof us in carrying the Gospel to all thenations, these inventions are indispensable. My plane landed at Longview afterleaving Dallas. Here 1 was taken by my

host to Gladewater where we waited forthe brethren to arrive. All were fromTexas except two, one coming fromOklahoma City, and the other, theMother of one of our students, fromWest Monroe, Louisiana. Some stayed for the Passover only, butmost remained for the night festival ofUnleavened Bread and the Sabbath. Itsurely seemed wonderful to see thosewhom I have. known from the annualfall festival, the Feast of Tabernacles.Because men have rejected God's wayswithout proof, they don't know whatpleasures can be had at these occasionsin which we are commanded to rejoicewith the prosperity God has bestowedupon us. My one great regret is thatthis meeting could not have been heldfor the entire week. But as our visiongrows we shall be able more fully toassemble as we ought. The evening having arrived for thecelebration of the Passover, an eternalinstitution nearly three and one-halfmiIleniums old, we were all gathered inthe home God chose for the purpose.

With others, who, on this solemn evening, were celebrat ing it alone or withothers of the same spirit, 1 am sure ourhearts were joined as we approached before the presence of God to commemorate the death of His Son to pay theweighty penalties of our crimes.Though we be but small in the millions of Israel, this ini tial assemblingmeans new life is being infused into thechurch. It means we are co-workers together more and more, being able to exhort each other as the day of vengeanceapproaches, and learning of the plan bywhich God is working His purpose outhere among men as it is revealed by theannual Holy Days.Coupled with the celebration of thePassover with unleavened bread andwine, which the world's religions regardas Jewish and sinful, we observed theordinance of footwashing at the beginning of the occasion. "I f ye know thesethings, happy are ye if ye do them (John13:17),"While the religious world gropes forimpossible solutions of human ills, every one of us was able to lay hold ofhappiness and confidence which wordscan only inadequately express. The factthat we were gathered together meantPlease continue on page 12

God has not cast away His people,Israel. But He blinded them UNTILthe end of Genti le Times, so that thrutheir fall salvation came to the Gentileswho, thru Christ, are individuallyGRAFTED IN, or spiritually ADOPTED into the family of Israel. This is the dispensation when God iscalling a people for His name (Acts 15:14-17-study this anew!) to be KINGSand PRIESTS, reigning WITH Christin the Kingdom during the thousandyears. (Rev. 5:10)."After this"-after this dispensationof taking out of the Gentiles a peoplefor His name-"I will return," promisesthe Lord. What for? "and will buildagain the tabernacle of David, which isfallen down; and I will build again theruins thereof, and I (Christ, not us) willset it up:"WHY? "That the residue of menmight seek after the Lord."Tabernacle signifies worship. Duringthis present N.T. Church age, the Jewsand our people are blinded. Their church"tabernacle" is fallen down. Israel is "inBabylon." After this Christ will return, and then the rest ofmen-blinded Israel, and Gentiles alike, will seek after theLord when Satan is chained, and Christreigns as King of Kings and Lord oflords! Those of the FIRSTFRUITS of Hissalvation, made immortal, will then reignwith Him, as kings and priests in thewonderful work of the Kingdom.During this time Israel is mostly

blinded UNTIL the fullness of Gentilescome in, and so (Rom. 11: 26) all Israelshall, then, be saved, for the DELIVERER, Christ, shall come out of SionlNow, in this dispensation, Israel hasnot believed, and the tabernacle of Davidis fallen down (Rom. 11:31-32 ), that, thru the mercy of the Gentiles and thesmall "Elect" in Israel, picked out inthis age, acting as kings and priests withChrist, THEY, ALSO, then, may OBTAIN MERCY!How WONDERFUL is God's greatPLAN of redemption, when we understand it, as we see it pictured in these

This feast annually pictures thisgreat event-this great "MYSTERY"dispensation-inGod's redemptive plan!Notice, too, that these feasts, Unleavened Bread, and Pentecost, fell atthe BEGINNING of the year, and thegreat events they pictured occurred at theBEGINNING of the dispensation! The group of holydays coming at theEND of the year all symbolize tremendous events in God's Plan of redemption to occur, yet future, at the END ofthe dispensation! They all come in theSEVENTH MONTH-and their fulfillment will come in the SEVENTH

They teachthat all who ever shall be saved are being saved, now, in this present dispensation. They teach that "Probation ENDS"at, or prior to, the Second Coming ofChrist.I f this be true, what a failure is God'splan! Only a very, very FEW have beentruly saved in this dispensation. Twothirds of all living on earth today havenever even HEARD the only namewhereby we may be saved! Are they-the majority of all living, eternally LOST because they neverHEARD-lost and condemned WITH

OUT A CHANCE? The common teaching is that God has cast away His people, Israel, and they are eternally doomedand lost. Had they been KEEPING theseannual holydays, commanded to be keptFOREVER-all kept faithfully by theNew Testament Church as recorded inActs and in church history-they wouldhave understood God's wonderful PLAN.We are not to CONVERT everyone inthe world in this age, but to declare theGospel-what Gospel?-the GOODNEWS of the KINGDOM-the Goodnews of the thousand years of restitution of all things when Christ returns toreign in power and great glory!Let us understand this. During thistime Israel is blinded in part-but onlyUNTIL the fullness of this Gentile dispensation. Dur ing this time, only theminority of Gentiles-Chinese, peopleof India and Russia, etc.-have evenHEARD the name of Christ. The Good News of the comingKINGDOM was to be preached AS AWITNESS. Many have been called during this time, but only few actually

They were blinded UNTIL theend of Gentile times. The heavens received Jesus UNTIL these times of restitution of all things. Those now gathered, since that dayof PENTECOST, 31 A.D., are theFIRSTFRUITS, only, of God's Plan ofSalvation. This dispensation, then, ispicking out ONLY the "firstfruits" ofth.ose to be saved. And they are beingrried and tested to qualify for positionsas kings and priests in the Kingdom, toaffect, THEN, the real salvation of theworld.

THEN it is that God shall set Hishand again the SECOND TIME to recover the remnant of HIS PEOPLEIsrael. (Isa. 11:I 1.)

THEN it is that "The Lord will comewith fire, and . . . by fire and by hissword will the Lord PLEAD with allflesh. . . . And I will set a sign amongthem, and I will send those that escape(these plagues) of them unto the nations . . . (Gentile) . . . that have NOTHEARD my fame, neither have seen myglory; and they SHALL DECLARE MYGLORY AMONG THE GENTILES."(lsa. 66:15,16,19,)Then it is that "living waters shall go

out from Jerusalem," and the Gentilenations, that have not HEARD, previously, "shall even go up from year toyear to worship the King, the Lord ofhosts, and to KEEP THE FEAST OFTABERNACLES/"Then it is that many nations "shallcome and say, Come, and let us go upco the mountain ( nation) of the Lord. . . and he will teach us His ways, andwe will walk in His paths: for THELAW SHALL GO FORTH OF ZION,and the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem. (Does"forever" MEAN forever?) (Micah 4:1-7). This does NOT apply to ourChurch, NOW-but to the glorious timeof the KINGDOM, after Christ rerurns. What a wonderful PLAN of REDEMPTION!Adam sinned. Should aWoman Wear a Coveringon Her Head? The eleventh chapter of I Corinthianshas been a puzzle to many. Some believethat Paul taught women to wear veils, hats, uncut hair or just long hair. Stillothers today teach that what Paul wrotehere is not suitable for us today. Whatis the truth? Before a direct answer, let's get thefacts straight. Was it common for wom

en to wear veils in public places ofworship in Paul's day? Smith's Diction-ary of the Bible, article Veil gives us theanswer. "With regard to the use of theveil, it is important to observe that itwas by no means so general as in moderntimes (at the turn of the century in theNear East) . . . . Much of the scrupulousness in respect to the use of the veildares from the promulgation of theKoran (the seventh century A.D.) ....In ancient times, the veil was adoptedonly in exceptional cases, ei ther as anarticle of ornamental dress . . . or bybetrothed maidens in the presence oftheir husbands, especially at the timeof the wedding . . . or by women o f loosecharacter for purposes of concealment(Gen. 38:14). But generally speaking, women both married and unmarried appeared in public with their faces exposed, both among the Jews . . . and among theEgyptians and Assyrians, as proved bythe invariable absence of the veil in thesculpture and paintings of these peoples."It was not customary for women towear veils in Paul's day. It is interestingto note that the church of Revelation17, the fountain head of harlotry, commands its women to wear coverings overshaven heads in religious orders. WhatPaul meant is this: as man is head ofwoman, it is improper for men to havecoverings as a symbol of subjection(long hair in the Nazarite vow is atoken of subjection for a special time toGod); but it is appropriate for womento have a covering of their subjectionto man. "Her hair is given her for acovering." It is shameful for men to havelong hair, but if a woman have long hairit is a glory to her. Paul, under inspiration, speaks of long hair as the covering, not some hat, veil or piece of cloth.Paul does not mean, as some say, that

    The GOOD NEWS

because women have long hair, whichnature teaches is proper, that they shouldwear something over their hair. No, instead, he says that not only he teaches, but "doth not even nature itself teachyou, that . . . if a woman have long hair,it is a glory to her: for her hair is givenher for a covering." Because long hair ismentioned, some are afraid to cut theirhair at all. The text doesn't read uncuthair, it reads long hair. Any head of hair, even though cut, if it be long enough tolook feminine and honorable, is appropriate. There is no definite Bible length, save that it appear as a glory to woman. If a woman wants to wear her hair cutso short as to look like a man, then sheought to be shorn or shaven, the symbolof a fallen woman. Men wearing longhair, a fad with the younger generation,is effeminate and no effeminate manshall inherit God's Kingdom.Does Ezekiel 38 and 39 Mean AnInvasion of Canada and the UnitedStates by Russia? This question was extensively an

swered in the November, 1948 issue ofthe Plain Truth . These chapters do notpicture such an invasion. Those whomistakenly claim so, must cast away allthe preceding thirty-seven chapters ofEzekiel. The prophecy is a warningagainst the House of Israel (Ez.3:4-7)of a coming invasion, which has not occurred since the days of the prophet . Itmust then lie in the future now soon tooccur. Ezekiel 5:12 warns our peoplethat two thirds of Israel shall die of warfamine and contagious diseases. Isaiah47:6 -9 states that modern Babylon, aunion of ten nations of Europe, not Russia will crush our people in slavery.Ezekiel thirty-four brings the Story flow ofthe entire book to the resurrection ofDavid and the second coming of JesusChrist to rule the nations at which timeour people are to be delivered (Jer.30: 3-9). The next chapters describe Israel and Judah dwelling safely in Palestine after being "gathered out of thenations" (Ez. 38: 12),

It is now, after the second coming ofChrist, with Israel obeying God in theland of Palestine, tha t Russia and heroriental hordes come to take a prey fromdefenseless cities. God shall destroy them,

Page 11putting an end to rebellious nations afterwhich people will not learn war anymore.IF WE LEAVE OUR CHURCH,WHAT ARE WE TO DO IN THEWAY OF WORSHIPPING? HOWCAN WE FEEL FREE TO CALL ONOUR FORMER PASTOR WHEN INNEED OF ADVICE?This problem is fundamental. Wearecommanded by God in many places tobe separate (2 Cor. 6:14-18), to be nopart of the world which has its ownreligious masquerading as Christ ian(John 17: 16). If we are baptized intothe church of God by the Holy Spirit (ICor. 12; 13), then we can not be par t ofanother church. Assuming that we havebeen obedient thus far, by leaving thispresent religious system and coming toGod, are we to fellowship this world'sdenominations because there is no placeto worship with the people of God?NO! Why?First, most churches do not hold publicservices on the day God set apart forworship from the creation. We wouldbe sinning when meeting weekly on anyday than is designated by the fourthcommandment!Second, we are to assemble with thoseof like faith, having the same Spirit.Hebrews 10:25 uses the expression "ourselves" meaning true saints. God realizes, however, that many of His people areable to worship Him only in t ruth andspirit. He is with us just the same nomatter how many or how few. And Hehas provided through the Radio Churchof God ways in which many who areseparated can come for advice in troubleand receive God's reply! Above allthrough prayer and Bible study God bestows upon us the wisdom we need tocomprehend the will of God perfectly.See James 1:5; 2 Tim 2:15, 3:16.We are not to go to the devil'schurches nor to his ministers for adviceon those things which pertain to God.We must separate ourselves from themand their errors. Instead we come tothose whom God has set as shepherds ofthe flock for the advice we need. Weshould still, however, show love to thoseof the world although they be enemiesfor the gospel's sake.ShouldWe Sell Dogs and Tithe theIncome Therefrom? The text of ten quoted to prove thatdogs should not be sold is Deuteronomy23 :18: "Thou shalt not bring the hireof a whore, or the price of a dog intothe house of the Lord thy God for anyvow: for even both these are abomination unto the Lord thy God."The only thing this text says is thatthe price or value, not the tithe of theprice, is not to be given for a vow. Job30: 1 indicates that God does not frown

Page 12upon the value of good dogs. They servemany indispensable functions in thefarming and hunting world. An incomefrom sale of a dog is not wrong. WhatMoses meant is this: An Israelite whovows, and it is better not to vow unnecessarily (Ece. 5:5) , was to give aclean animal as a sacrificial payment. Adog is an unclean animal, not fit forfood. Although Israelites later did offerdogs (Isaiah 66:3), God refused to accept them. A dog is not a symbol of JesusChrist as is the sheep or other cleananimal. What Should I Do I f My HusbandWill No t Tithe? I Have No Money

of My OwnThis problem arises often where Godhas not revealed His truth to all themembers of the family. The t ithe is thetenth of your increase, not of anothers. That is his responsibility. Unless a wifeearns or is given money of her own, whatever food, clothing and other articles

she uses is what her husband earns ashead of the home. I t is his place to paythat tithe, but he must not be forced todo so. A wife should tithe that whichis her own.

man without God-of human sufferingand failure. And thus God, in His great wisdom, has permitted men to PROVE to themselves what sinners they are!-howHELPLESS they are, of themselves! And finally we shall have to learnthe lesson that it is only when GOD,HIMSELF, thru sending JESUS to rulewith a rod of iron, undertakes to savemen that the world can really be saved! And so, those now being saved are aFIRSTFRUITS of salvation, and to havethe very great honor of being Christ'sassistants in that wonderful Kingdomwork of redemption!THAT is God's true Plan of Redemption, as taught from Genesis to Revelation! And how contrary to the popularteaching! But it is the Plan, nevertheless, pictured in God's annual HOLYDAYS.And had we continued to KEEP theseHolydays, we should never have lostsight of this PLAN, and come underthe deception of Rome!Pentecost Observed By New Testament

Church of GodJUSt as we found the True CHURCHOF GOD continuing to observe the Daysof Unleavened bread, as well as the Passover, so they continued to observe Pentecost.Had they NOT been assembled in aHOLY CONVOCATION on the first

The GOOD NEWSPentecost AFTER everything that wasabolished had been DONE AWAY, wenever could have read in our Bibles thesublime record of the second chapter ofActs!

Now a "HOLY CONVOCATION"means a holy ASSEMBLY of theCHURCH, convoked under absoluteAUTHORITY. Look up the word "convocation" in the dictionary. It is an assembly where everyone is COMMANDED, under AUTHORITY, to be present. The Sabbath is a weekly holy CONVOCATION. We are commanded, therefore, to assemble ourselves together. Eachof these annual days is an holy CONVOCATION. The early Church obeyed. Will we?"And when the day of Pentecost wasfully come they were all with one accord IN ONE PLACE:' They were assembled. They were KEEPING thisHoly Day. Now WHY, if God's ANNUAL Sabbaths were abolished? Let usanswer honestly!

Passover in TexasCont inued from page 9

that we could .rhare these fruits of obedience and carry the inspiration to ourhomes. There is a genuine purpose forbeing convoked, which when brethrenare alone, can't be shared. But in this agemany are scattered, can't do otherwise-which is all according to God's wisdom. The next morning I spent in studyand walking about town, seeing an altogether different atmosphere than Ifind in Pasadena. I probably noticedwhat most Texans take for granted, asthey would notice as unusual the life ofPasadena that seems commonplace tome. One thing I learned about the fruitto be had in the markets, the bestCalifornia oranges are found in Texasand the best Texas oranges are to bepurchased in California! What unnecessary wastes in shipping and advertisingoccur just because competitive marketsexist! After purchasing good and healthfulfood for the night celebration of theFeast of Unleavened Bread, we all awaited the approaching Sabbath which wasin this case an annual High Day, too. With the food prepared Friday, we mutually shared the excellent conversationand meal that caused us to be thankfulfor the spiritual and material blessingsGod gives. It is not often Christians can have fellowship with one another (we are oftenone or two in a family) apart from useless conversation of the world and withfood that has not been boiled to death, cooked to pieces, poisoned with preserva-

June, 1951rives, bleached till anemic, or coloredartificially to make it look like whatit isn't. Instead of a yoke of bondage, these days are to us a cause of rejoicingreal events in our lives, something tolook forward to.

That evening, the significance of theDays of Unleavened Bread was the subject of my talk. It can be briefly summarized in this paragraph. God's plandoes not end with the slaying of Jesus forspiritual sins, else we would perish (ICor. 15: 18) . Nor did it end with Christ'sbody broken for our healing as symbolized by the bread. We, having been forgiven our transgressions, must quit sinning, which is pictured by the feast ofunleavened bread. Exodus 13:9 showGod gave the days of unleavened breadto teach us obedience to the law. Becausmost denominations are ashamed toobey any of the annual festivals, theaverage professing christ ian does noknow that he ought to quit sinning andkeep the law. Just as Israel came out ofEgypt in his own strength, so we, afterrepentance, must struggle against sinAs our forefathers found themselveswithout hope at the Red Sea, so do wetoday have no hope of ever succeedingunless God should give us His HolySpirit so that we can have the love oGod which fulfills the law (Roman5:5). The crossing of the Sea throughwalls of water on either side to protecthe people is an apt portrayal of thework of the Spirit of God in and throughus. The children of Israel passed throughthe waters, which were a means of complete escape from their past slavery andwhich were also instruments of desrrucrion against the enemy. So in the christian life, we must receive the HolySpiri t or else there is no possibility obeing saved from the sins that beset anenslave us. By the spirit of God we havthe germ of eternal life begun in us andwe have the enemy sin being destroyeas we yield to God with our whole heartand minds every day. Just as Israefaced the wilderness, so we face a whollifetime ahead full of trials and troubles. By rejecting the statutes commanding the observance of the days of Unleavened Bread, the religious world halost the knowledge of the purpose oliving. After this service some of the brethren retired for the night, but I, humaas can be, had to lose my key to thapartment. But as all turns out well, onof the ladies present at the servicefound the duplicates. ORGANIZING LOCAL CHURCHESby Herbert W. Armstrong

THOli SANDS of you, we fuUy realize, long for local churches of God toDe established in your various 10calities.

We know how you feel. How great isth e need for a place where you can fellowship and meet regularly with thosewho know and love and follow the sameTRUTH you hear on The World T'omor-roui program and read in The PlainTruth and The Good NeUiJ.

One of the purposes in founding Ambassador College was to train a Godcalled ministry for this purpose. We arenow nearing the t ime when this activitymay be started.Yet we must keep constantly in mindthat the Great Commission-"Preachthe Gospel to all narions't-i-together withour special calling to warn our Israelitishnations of prophesied punishment fortheir sins-is of first importance.

Rapid ProgressAlready plans are being consideredfor carrying the Message to Britain andEurope, starting possibly within a year.Definite schedules are being worked Outto put the broadcast on more Americanstations starting October. And the recentu ip of one of our senior srudencs, Herman Hoeh, to Gladewater, Texas, wherea number of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana bre thr en met for the Passover, isthe first small start toward actually gett ing many of you who have found God'strue Way together for regular fellowshipand worship. It does take time. Yet rapid str ides arebeing made. Progress is more rapid thanmost of you realize. We know how shortrime is. The work of God is beingstepped up accordingly.

We Can't Send Names FromMailing List

Frequently zealous co-workers will askus to send the names and addresses fromour mailing list of those in their vicinity. The letter will read something likethis:

"I'm so hungry for regular fellowshipwith others who listen to the programand who know and love the truth. Ithink it would be a wonderful idea ifI had your mailing list so I could goaround and get all these people to meeting regularly together."At first glance such an idea may seemsplendid. But Scripture reaching and thelesson of experience compel us to refuse. This is difficult for some to under-

stand, so we feel it well to explain.Sheep Must Have a Shepherd

Jesus compared His followers to sheep. The Bible speaks of ministers as shepherds. It is a most apt comparison. Whatwould happen to a little flock of sixsheep on a mountain-side here, and adozen sheep in a valley there, withoutany shepherd? And especially if therewere a lot of wolves in sheep's c lo th ingseeking flocks to devour.

While Jesus' first and Great Commission to His apostles was to preach theGospel of the Kingdom to the world, Healso commanded, "Feed my sheep."But to whom was this command given? Not to unt ra ined lay members , butto Peter and the apostles whom He hadspecially called and educated and trainedfor this purpose. Jesus' intent was for thesheep to be fed by those He had calledto this special ministry-those t rue andfai thful servants properly trained. Hedid not intend for the sheep to gathertbemselues together, without a shepherd, and try to feed themselves, and guidethemselves along the proper path.Paul solemnly commissioned the Godchosen ministers and elders of theChurch of God at Ephesus:"Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over whom the HolySpiri t hath made you overseers (bishopsor pastors), to feed the Church of God. . . For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in amongyou, not sparing the flock. (Acts 20: 2829.)He warned them that even amongtheir own local members some wouldrise up to lead the flock astray.

Experience a Dear TeacherWe bad to learn this lesson by experience-and the pr ice was costly! In the earlier days of this work, a number of l it tle flocks were raised up in dif

ferent localities throughout Oregon andWashington-the result of the personalevangelistic campaigns by your pastor. But there was no shepherd to leavebehind to pastor and guide and feedthose flocks. And it was never long untilthese groups were broken up. Theywould soon be quarrelling among themselves, or various ones would lead theothers off the t ru th on various wild tangents, or some wolf in sheep's c lo th ingwould come along and, pretending to bea true preacher of Jesus Christ, devourand destroy the flock.

That very experience, repeated manytimes, was the lesson God used to causeus to see the need of establishing Ambassador College. The purpose of thiscollege is to attract here and train thoseGod has called to become competentpastors for such local congregations, inaddition to the major purpose of carryingChrist's Message to all the nations of theearth.

We enou. how discouraging it is forsome of you dear people to have to remain isolated-way off by yourselves, away from others who also know andlive God's true Way, surrounded byworldly people and paganized churches. We understand your problem in raisingyour children in such a world. Our heartsgo out to you'That is why we are laboring night andday to prepare true ministers for you.Let's Be Thankful

But we know also that as long as eachisolated member or family is forced tofeed only upon the broadcasts and ThePlain Truth and The C'ood Neu!1other l iterature from our office, thesemembers are all kept individually in constant contact with the shepherd God haschosen and used in their conversion andbringing them to the true light. And, even though without person-toperson fellowship with others, they arecontinually fed on 'he true spiritualfood. And no greedy "wolf in sheep's clothing" is going to waste much of his timetrying to draw off one single individualor family. The false prophets usually goafter whole groups who are withoutshepherds. So, let's not grumble! Rather be thankful you are so much better off than before!Even if most of you are deprived of.urending church services, you hear yourpastor more often-and right in yourhome via radio-than most church gocrshear their pastors. Every time the"WorldTomorrow" is on the air, y01l are attend-ing a great church service, in one- of th elargest fellowships on earth-attendedby more than a mill ion others!
