PRAYERS FOR CENTRAL WEST

DISTRICT CHURCHES

THE CHURCH CONFERENCE NOVEMBER 22, 2016 - 10:30 A.M. WILSON FELLOWSHIP HALL

What exactly is a Church Conference? Why does a Church hold these meetings? Is this different from a Charge Conference? Then what is the Church Council? You Methodists are very confusing with your own church language!

These are all the types of questions I heard when I served as the Central West District Superintendent before coming to Willowbrook United Methodist Church as your senior pastor. Let me draw on that experience to address these questions as information for our new members who do not have a United Methodist Church background, as well as being a refresher to our long-time church members prior to the called Church Conference on November 22nd at 10:30 a.m. in Wilson Fellowship Hall.

The United Methodist Church understands that Jesus Christ is the head of the Church as established by God in scripture. The words of the Bible serve as guiding principles for living our lives in faith, hope and love. The Bible is understood as God’s Word for the Church today. The day to day business of the Church is guided by these principles and follow-up according to how the majority understands this direction.

The easiest way to understand how business is conducted in a United Methodist Church is to think about how business is conducted in Washington D.C. Oh, No!!! You might think. Nevertheless our national government has a very solid structure of checks and balances as well as a fair philosophy that has served its people well, known as democracy. This is basically the structure and approach to running the United Methodist Church. Most denominational churches have their own structure, rules, and unique ways of doing business. Even most “non-denominational” churches have a structure and association of churches that govern themselves in similar ways.

The system of checks and balances in government is known as the executive, legislative and judicial branches. You all know how that works with the President, the legislative houses and the court system occupying these roles. The Church uses elected Bishops, voting conferences, and a church court known as the judicial council to serve in similar capacities.

It is under the category of the voting conferences that we find the Church Conference of which I speak. In previous articles in our newsletter I explained about the General Conference where elected members make decisions concerning national and international Methodist matters. This event is held every four years.

It is at the Jurisdictional Conference where elected members make decisions on regional matters and elect Bishops every four years. The local arm (about the size of a state) has an annual event known as the Annual Conference to make decisions on matters that impact churches locally. Members to this Conference are elected in each of our United Methodist Churches. The pastors of the church are among the elected delegation.

That brings us to the event which this article is based on, the annual Church Conference held in each United Methodist Church congregation. The Church Conference is the annual official business meeting of the local congregation. We report to and connect with the larger United Methodist Church through our area District Superintendent, Rev. Neil Leftwich. Neil heads up what is now known as the West District of the Annual Conference. (This area includes the western part of the greater Phoenix area and extends west to Yuma, south to Ajo, and north to Sedona.) Neil will conduct this congregational business meeting where we will elect our members (delegates) to the Annual Conference for next year. We will elect our congregation’s officers for the next year. We will hear reports and vote on the business of the church for the year. Any member of the church can vote at this meeting called the Church Conference.

During the course of the year, any “in between” business that needs attention before the next Church Conference can be taken care of at monthly Church Council meetings. This is limited to Non-Church Conference specific business.

Occasionally the District Superintendent will conduct business using only the Church Council as voting members and this meeting is called a Charge Conference. The Charge Conference is actually the “basic unit” of the United Methodist Church. The Church Conference is used when all members of the church are asked to participate.

The agenda of the Charge or Church Conference is established by the District Superintendent. The District Superintendent conducts the meeting with voice and vote for attendees determined on whether it is a Charge Conference or a Church Conference. The specific details of what these conferences can and cannot do are detailed in Paragraphs 245-251 of the United Methodist Book of Discipline. This book serves as the organizational document of the United Methodist Church. It is amended at the General Conference every four years. It includes the Articles of Faith which are not amended but stand as Doctrinal Standards of the whole Church.

The Church Conference is an interesting point of decision making as well as our connection to other Methodist churches around the world. I invite the whole congregation to attend. Members and non-members alike! All are invited to see how the business side of the Church works.

See you in church

BENJI IS SINGING CHRISTMAS CAROLS!

That’s right – Benji is getting ready for Christmas by asking wonderful Willowbrookers to help the teens of Sidewalk Sunday School by contributing to the gift card project. The Outreach Committee will buy $20 gift cards (last year we bought 100 with your total giving of $2000!). These will be given to the teens at the begin-ning of December so they can buy gifts for others – or perhaps for themselves. You’re welcome to help with this project by placing your donation in the offering plate and noting “Sidewalk Sunday School” on the check – or by putting checks or cash in the big Benji jar in Fellowship Hall. Suppose we could put a Christmas smile on the faces of 120 teens this

year? Thank You for your generosity!!

Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe Challenge

A big THANK YOU to all who donated items to Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe at last year’s Holidaze Craft Faire! We asked a lot from you and you provided! We were over-whelmed on the first day! We had 83 loaves of special breads, but we only had 4 loaves left for the second day. Ethnic items and candy, especially fudge, were

constantly requested. So our CHALLENGE to you is to DOUBLE our product for this year’s Sweet Shoppe on Novem-

ber 4 and 5!! We have sign-up sheets at Sunday Coffee Time and request you bring your items to the church kitchen during the day Wednesday, November 2 or by 8:00 a.m. Thursday, November 3. (Details on how to package items are available at the sign-up table.) We look forward to Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe overflowing with a large selection of goodies!

On the patio watch a demonstration of a World War 1 hand-cranked circular sock knitting machine. Kris Krafters have been busy making prod-ucts to sell. Check their tables in the narthex dis-playing their handmade items such as quilts, fes-tive table runners, placemats and napkins, deco-rated kitchen towels, stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, knit and crocheted lap robes, crib quilts, baby items, children’s character pillow cases, walker bags, totes, holiday decorations and more. Pastor Steve will create small watercolors at his booth throughout the day. Stop by and see him at work, and pick up an original watercolor painting or some beautiful notecards. A new addition to the Faire is Will’s Sharp-ening Service. He will have his van in the parking lot where he will sharpen knives, scissors, tools and more at reasonable prices. If a line forms, he will only accept 5 items from each customer in line. You are free to return later with additional items to be sharpened. Do not miss Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe featuring homemade goodies made by our talented Willow-brook members. We expect a variety of cookies, candies, pies, cakes, and bread for you to take home. We will also have many ethnic treats to tempt you. You may just find some pfeffernüsse, lefse, biscotti, baklava, or rosettes all packaged and ready to go. Cleary’s Usborne Books and More is anoth-er new vendor. At this table you will find books and activities for infants through young adults. We are excited that 50% of their proceeds will be given in books to the charity of our choice—which this year will go to UMOM for their “Read to Me” program and their Child Development Department. Do not miss stopping at their booth to help with this Out-reach opportunity. Be sure to check out the large display of raffle items on the stage. Each vendor is required to donate an item to the raffle. Tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. Purchase a string of tickets and you can either put them all in one jar for something you are particularly attracted to, or distribute them between multiple raffle items. Drawings for the win-ners will take place at 1:00 pm on Saturday. Take a break from shopping and visit the Patio Café where you will be able to purchase our tasty hot cinnamon rolls each morning and then a

delicious lunch served by our own Willowbrook Kitchen Crew from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The tables in the shade under the carob tree are a great place to relax for a bit.

THE ARIZONA CHARITABLE TAX CREDIT IS A “WIN-WIN”!

A WIN FOR THOSE WHO CLAIM THE CREDIT A WIN FOR THOSE WHO RECEIVE THE DONATION

The Charitable Tax Credit started more than 20 years ago. The goal was to increase charitable giving within the State of Arizona to Arizona charities who help the working poor. Over the years, there have been changes to this tax credit: —You do not have to itemize to claim the credit.

—Individuals can receive as much as a $400 credit and married couples filing jointly up to an $800 credit. —Donation deadline is April 15 (2017 for 2016 Return). The key to all this is to make sure you donate directly to a “qualifying” charity and include form AZ 321 with your return. There is an extensive list of qualifying charities on the AZ. Dept. of Revenue’s website. You are proba-bly familiar with many of these qualifying charities just to name a few.

UMOM Wesley Community Center Valley View Community Food Bank Habitat For Humanity Central Arizona St. Mary’s Food Bank Benevilla Justa Center The Salvation Army – Sun Cities

In a nutshell, this credit gives you a dollar-for-dollar refund or credit against what you owe in state income taxes! Here’s an example of how the credit works. Let’s say you are single and you donated $200 to UMOM and $200 to Valley View Food Bank and you owe $100 to the state. By claiming the charitable tax credit, instead of owing $100 to the state, you would receive a $300 refund ($100 less the $400 credit = a $300 return). This is a great way to make charitable donations and it really costs you nothing since your donation is refunded to you by the State of Arizona.

That’s why it’s a Win-Win.

STAFF EMAILS

First, a big thank you to all who have helped with Sun-day Coffee Time over the summer. We appreciate your help in providing those fellowship times, and in keeping the kitchen in great shape. We are happy to announce that we have again received an “A” rating with no defi-ciencies from the County Health Department after their inspection in September.

If you have brought treats on a platter or in a storage container, remember to stop by the kitchen to take that container back home again.

Here we are, heading into Fall, and we need to get the kitchen and everyone who will be working in it ready for the busy season.

Do you wish you felt more comfortable working in the church kitchen? Come to the Kitchen Seminar Friday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. We will be talking about using the equipment in the kitchen, following the food safety requirements of our Health Department permit, and we will review the procedures for groups providing Sunday Coffee Time. Please sign up at the Kitchen Committee table during Coffee Time on Sundays so we know how many to prepare materials for.

It’s Fall housecleaning time again in the kitchen! The Kitchen Committee is asking for your help in getting the kitchen back into tiptop shape. Our Cleaning Session will begin Friday, November 18 at 9:00 a.m. Come for an hour or all morning. Everyone is invited! It’s another great way of becoming comfortable about where things are and how the dishwasher works. Sign-up sheets will be at the Kitchen Committee table during Sunday Coffee Time.

Questions? Call or write Barb Christie.

I hope those of you who attended the Fellowship Potluck in October had a great time and those of you who won the wonderful door prizes, enjoyed them! The purpose of the groups is first and foremost FELLOWSHIP, but it is also taking care of each other when a need arises and the key to our groups is LEAD-ERSHIP with the Group Leaders and Shepherds. It is the opportunity to get to know fellow Willowbrookers in a smaller, more intimate gathering, a chance for spiritual growth with devotions and a short meeting, if you wish. A fellowship group should also remember each other with cards for joys and concerns. If you are not currently in a Fellowship Group or your group has become inactive and you would like to join one, please let Marilyn Burmeister or Betty Shepherd in the office 623-974-5637 know. It is important that you inform the church office when there are changes in your Fellowship Group.

November is the month of Thanksgiving. Here at Willowbrook we have many reasons to be thankful. We are grateful for members who have served faithfully through

the years. We are also grateful for the love and support of members who encourage and promote new outreach methods. Your enthusiasm for Art and Soul, Spiritual Gifts Seminars, and Mosaic Worship has been a blessing. And most important-ly, we are thankful to God, our Creator, and to Je-sus, who gave His life for us. We are eternally grateful for forgiveness for our foolish ways and for loving us in spite of ourselves.

We have been called to serve you and bring the love of our Heavenly Father to you as “LOVE WITH SKIN ON!”
